We ordered the sarang burong, seafood scramble egg chow fun, hainanese chicken over rice and the roti canai. The roti canai came out quick. The roti was cold but crispy. Guess it was just sitting there and not freshly made. Thankfully the curry dip was hot. The sarang burong came out next and it was very bland. No flavor what so ever. It was just stir fried chicken shrimp and veggies topped with cashews. Wish it was flavorful. Salt would have been nice or some sort of Malaysian flavor. The fried taro was cold also. Guess it was just sitting around til someone orders it. The hainanese chicken was also bland. Not even the dark soy sauce or the water downed hot sauce on side could have saved it. Walked in on a sunday around 7 PM, and were seated at a table for 2 immediately. The restaurant was very large and had a lot of seating, and the waiters were quick to take our orders and fill our orders. There was a very extensive list of options on the menu. For our appetizer and entrees, we ordered the roti canai, Hainanese chicken, and tom yum clams, as well as chicken rice on the side. My favorite was the roti canai, but all of the savory dishes were very good and comforting. I normally never finish my rice, but the chicken rice went very well with the tom yum soup. For dessert, we ordered the ABC, which was a shaved ice dish with a variety of toppings. I didn't enjoy it as much as the other dishes, but it was refreshing and light. Wow, can't believe I've never reviewed Nyonya... a Chinatown staple... back to when it used to be located across the street! It was definitely before my Yelp days. Nyonya is consistent. The food is always good. The vibe, still hectic AF. (Back when the wait time would be over 1hr... ). The service is sometimes a miss... can cause anxiety and leave you hungry lol... but there are times when it's super nice. I'm not saying they are the best, but they are a solid choice for "Americanized" Malaysian food. (The seasoning is spicier in different parts of Malaysia.. but in Malaysia their version of chicken rice is not as delish as ones we had in Singapore, yea I said what I said). So, Nyonya went through an expansion phase... they used to have 2 locations in Brooklyn, which has now shuttered. This Grand St spot is the OG... serving up delicious eats for over 20+ years. Came here for dinner and it was packed! Luckily didn't have to wait long to be seated. We got two of the roti canai, and interestingly one of the dippings was spicer than the other. They also had small pieces of chicken in the spicy sauce. The beef skewers were amazing!!! Heavenly! They were juicy and so so flavorful even without the dipping sauce. There's some interesting lighting if you're moved towards the back of the main dining room. The bathrooms are also freshly renovated so it's clean and solid now, which is a plus. My cousin and I came here for a late night dinner. Inside was larger than it looked from the outside. We both had hainanese chicken with rice. They warned us that the chicken was cold but we knew what it was. They also made sure we knew it was cash only. We saw. They gave a generous portion of chicken and rice. When you order it is the luck of the draw. I got all white meat with nary a bone while my cousin got all dark meat with lots of bone. Tender, charred, and with plenty of satay peanut sauce. ＊Sarang Burong 佛砵飄香 $21.95 ** Possibly the most underrated Malaysian dish and my personal favorite. There was a bit of a wait, about 15 mins, but they are very efficient and turn the tables over quick.It was a bit crowded and loud since it was Chinese New Year but it did not seem like tables were on top of one another. Great starter! 5/5 DUCK GINGER NOODLE SOUP ~ Special egg noodles served in homemade sauce or broth with ginger duck meat, vegetables & scallions. They're just like the thin egg noodles you would get with wontons. Such a staple in NYC Chinatown! My go-to dishes are the fried pearl noodles and the Hainan chicken. The fried pearl noodles are these teardrop-shaped noodles tossed over high heat for that smoky wok-hei flavor - great texture from the crunchy veggies and a solid amount of protein. The Hainan chicken is refreshing and tender. I enjoy the soy sauce it comes with; the chili sauce was a bit watered down for my taste, so I skipped it. My only small qualm is that the Thai iced tea tastes a bit artificial, but definitely not a dealbreaker. This spot is still always in my regular Chinatown rotation. Def good if you're sick or a fan of some less-intense but enjoyable flavors. I really liked the rice which had a savory chicken flavor. The fish head stew was my fave. Some nice sour notes from the pickled greens, herbal notes from the sliced ginger, and complexity you would expect in SE Asian cuisine. If you've never had this umami goodness before, think of if chow fun noodles & pad see ew had a baby! The bouncy chewy thicc cut noodles with the big pieces of shrimp & beef compliment for the ultimate bite. Roti Canai 3.5/5: The amount of curry and the big piece of roti is always a joy to get! Only thing was I didn't receive it hot nor did it feel crispy / fresh as it usually does when I frequent the city. The flavors are still there, curry isn't spicey; comes with a piece of potato and chicken with a coconut sauce! Overall; please make sure you bring cash! They have an ATM right before entering. I loved the crispiness of it but I actually wouldn't have minded having more of the softer parts as it would soak up more of the curry. So it's probably not the best quality Malaysian food I've had, but for the price I really can't ask for much. The menu is really large so good luck narrowing it down! We ended up getting roti canai to start. The roti is great as soon as it comes out, but it unfortunately cooled down quickly and got super chewy. We shared the ginger duck and fried pearl noodles. The ginger duck was super meaty and not fatty like most duck dishes I've had. The fried pearl noodles surprised me because I don't usually like thicker noodles, but these were cooked well. It had a good "wok flavor" without being overly greasy. Food came out super quickly. This was probably one of the most affordable meals I've had in NYC and the portions were super generous. It was super addicting 8 can say though the chicken that came from the Nasi lemak was disappointing. Now to the hainese chicken--I loved the chicken but the "special Thai" sauce on top was not good. I wanted to try something new but basically I just wiped off the sauce and ate the chicken. Overall chicken was soooooooooo good (without the Thai sauce).
