    B1. Hainan Chicken Rice
    Mei Qin Z.

I visited Betong Hainan Chicken a few months back and given that it's been a few months since then, I was contemplating whether to even write this review, but the experience was so mediocre and frustrating that I now grimace every time I walk past this place. Hence, why not? Let's start with the menu itself. When my partner and I went, half of the menu was crossed out. No noodles (that means no pad thai, no pad see ew, no pad kee mao) and no vegetables besides steamed broccoli. Now, why would anyone go to a restaurant for steamed broccoli? The rest of the menu that was left uncrossed consisted of roti canai, hainan chicken, and curry chicken. So that was exactly what we got: roti canai with curry dipping sauce, hainan chicken rice, and curry chicken over rice. Wow, I sure never experienced having my food basically picked out for me. Anyhow, onto the food. The roti canai was perhaps the best dish. It was crispy, flaky, and paired nicely with the chicken curry that it was served with. The hainan chicken and the curry chicken, on the other hand, were just mid. While the hainan chicken was cooked well and had a tender texture, it lacked the flavors that I was expecting and the overall taste fell short. The accompanying chili sauce provided some much-needed flavor enhancement, but again fell short of my expectations, lacking that desired kick. The curry chicken was cooked well too, but the curry was watery and lacked the depth and aromatic profile that make this dish truly exceptional. And, did I mention the small portion sizes? My partner and I ordered what we would order at any other restaurant and walked out feeling almost just as hungry as we walked in. In terms of service, the service was just average, with staff members attending to our needs but lacking in warmth and attentiveness. And, in terms of ambiance, the restaurant was clean and simple, but it lacked the cozy and inviting atmosphere that I would have much preferred. The restaurant itself was also relatively small and I found myself whispering to my partner just because I could hear all the other conversations going on at nearby tables and felt uncomfortable by that. Ultimately, I wouldn't recommend Betong Hainan Chicken and definitely do not see myself coming back.

Wow! Great place if we weren't specifically looking for this place we would have missed it. Cash only place. We ordered the family combo for 2: - 2 house special soups - 2 chicken rice - 1 small steamed chicken - 1 small curry roti - 1 string beans Wow - it was a good amount of food for two people. We barely finished it! The soup was delicious, as was the rice. The roti was yummy! And the string beans were good as well but got a little salty. The chicken came with 2 different sauces - one spicy and one non-spicy. Great little place!

This place is a small hole in the wall restaurant and make sure to bring cash. They don't have Apple Pay but they do take venmo. I was looking for something healthy after a workout and this really hit the spot. My friend and I got the family order for two which comes with 2 chicken rice, hainan chicken, roti canai, and string beans. I loved all of it, the chicken looks bland but tasted good with the spicy sauce. Really, I don't even like string beans and I still ate a ton. They also give complimentary soup which was rlly good. It was a good amount for both of us and pretty filling. Our total only came out to a $21 and some change! I'd definitely come back.

Amazing hainan chicken combo~ extremely well priced! This place did not have ac when I went, and the service was a little slow. I would skip on the curry (roti) dish, however I would highly recommend their hainan chicken dish!

I've been wanting to come here for awhile and my bf and I decided to get take out a few We shared it with my brother and it was a good amount for the three of us. It comes with roti canai, large Hainan chicken, string beans, curry chicken and 4 chicken rice. I really enjoyed the hainan chicken! It was SO tender and delicious. The roti canai was really small, I think they should give 2 pieces for this family set. We finished everything except the curry chicken and one of the chicken rice, which we had the next day for leftovers! I want to try the crispy chicken! Will try that next time I come here

I stopped by to pick up some take out since I wanted Hainan chicken and Betong was downstairs from my hotel. I walked in to place and order. They do not take card. Cash only. I had to wait until my parent came to bring me some cash as I only carry card. Haha. So I ordered hainan chicken rice. It's one of my favorite dishes and we don't have great options in Orlando. I also ordered roti which in NY usually comes with chicken in the curry sauce. My son ordered a curry chicken and rice. All the food was good.

Finally got to try this Hainan Chicken place in Flushing! We ordered the C1 combo for the three of us. It came with winter melon soup (made with chicken bones) that smelled like white pepper, the perfect soup for this chilly weather. The roti canai was flaky and soft on the inside, with that special buttery flavor that you are looking for. The light curry sauce pairs well and is not too spicy. The boneless chicken is tender and flavorful, and dipping it in the provided savory garlic soy sauce is tasty. It's got that essential "chicken" flavor. I chose to eat the chicken rice with the sweet soy sauce provided, which was just enough to add that extra dimension of flavor without being overpowering. It's a sticky soy sauce, not the runny kind. The string beans were cooked well with the preserved veggies, which added some saltiness. The dish was salty but in a good way, a necessary way. Overall, the food here is solid and not too oily, like many other restaurants of this cuisine can be. They offered free refills on the soup, which was a nice touch. The combo meal only cost $20 before tax and tip, which is super affordable, and was the perfect portion for three people to be full.

4 stars strictly because there is a deal that is an actual DEAL. 20 for a meal for 2: you get 2 bowls of rice, roti canai, sautéed (rather salty) green beans and some chicken. (It's labeled as Hainanese chicken, but it's not the same moist, oily chicken that Hainanese chicken usually is.) It's an inconspicuous location, tucked away as a narrow storefront. Would go if you want to pay $10 for a filling meal but do not go with the intention of finding the best Malaysian food.

This hole-in-the-wall located on 39th Ave was surprisingly larger than I thought inside. I stopped in mid-day to enjoy some Hainanese style chicken and this place was friendly, generous and delicious! We were seated immediately and enjoyed the jet engine of an AC that fills this place with cool air when it was so hot and humid out. The C1 Family Order for 2 people is a great entry point (and at currently $19.95 a great deal! I don't think will last because nothing gold can stay). It comes with Roti Canai, Hainan Chicken Small, Sautéed String Beans and 2 bowls of chicken rice...and SURPRISE two bowls of chicken broth (soup?) with melon. Everything was so tasty and good! The roti canai with silky smooth and fragrant curry over chunks of potato and chicken that went so well with the tender, flaky roti. The Hainan chicken was very tender and delicious - I enjoyed the spicy dipping sauce (sambal?) that actually had a hint of fruit to my tastebuds. Sautéed string beans tasted a bit over salted, but were fresh and had a nice snap and wok-hei. The star of the show was the delicious chicken rice - great flavor without feeling heavy or greasy. The surprise soup was pure chicken essence with a layer of chicken fat floating on top that coats your mouth and tongue with such magnificent flavor. The small carafe of Thai iced tea was not overly sweet went really well with all the food. I look forward to checking out their version of fried chicken or perhaps the bronzini if I come with a foursome. This place keeps it simple and the dishes tight, as in hitting the mark. I think they have something good here and look forward to seeing them thrive!

Only winners deserve this chicken for dinner! This place has love for their chicken, and I think the chicken should be proud of their taste. Where else can you get great food like this at this price tag? Both the fried hainan chicken and regular hainan chicken are tender and juicy. Thai ice tea was also good. Will come back to try other options.

We passed by Betong Hainan Chicken when we visited Apollo Bakery, which is located not far and we were attracted since it just newly opened. We were also craving for refreshing food, so Hainan Chicken should be a perfect choice. The options on the menu weren't various but it's decent and there were combo available for 2-4 people. We had their B4 Mixed Chicken Rice, Stir Water Spinach with Fish Sauce and a bowl of rice. The food was delicious, especially the chicken, which was super tender, juicy and great with their sauce. We thought the fried one was even better than Eim Khao, which is a popular & well-known place for Hainan Chicken in Elmhurst. However, there was some confusion for the order Mixed Chicken Rice we had, which included *Rice* in the name. However, it didn't come with rice so we made an extra order. Moreover, under the Hainan Chicken category, it is noted "Serve with House Specail Soup", but the staff told us our Mixed Chicken Rice didn't come with soup. We think they should've added an exclusive message on the menu or re-design their menu at all.

    Special Mala Chicken Rice

TLDR: No frills, solid Hainanese chicken. Affordable, hearty and satisfying. Betong should be on your rotation of "go to" Flushing good eats. Get the C1 meal for two and if you have the space, absolutely try the Special Mala Chicken Rice. I was wondering what this more well-lit restaurant that occupies the previous Ku Shain space. Some research noted that Betong is a place that specializes in Hainanese chicken. I was curious. We tried this spot not knowing what to expect. If you're going with more than yourself, absolutely get the C1. For $19.99 you're getting two bowls of the house soup, a chicken curry roti canai, a small Hainanese chicken (boneless, might I add), two chicken rice bowls and an order of stir-fried string beans. Ordering these a la carte would be $30+. This is more than enough food for two. If you want some variety, add on another chicken over rice for $9.99. The first time we got the Fried Hainan Chicken for our extra dish, the second time we got the Special Mala Chicken. The house soup is tasty. It's got deep chicken flavor and lots of white pepper, great way to start your meal. Don't sleep on the chunk of turnip in there either. The roti is decent. The chicken curry sauce was more yellow than I've had before but it was enjoyable enough. The potato was super soft, almost like a curry mashed potato. Okay, the Hainanese chicken. Tender, rich in flavor and BONELESS! Previously, the only place I knew that offered this was Yummy on Northern Boulevard. Sadly they're no longer around and moved on to Rolls Rice (which is awesome). Dunk it in that delicious chili sauce and chase it with a spoonful of the chicken rice. That rice is seriously addictive. It's got so much ginger, chicken stock in every grain. The Fried Hainan Chicken. Never had this before. It was enjoyable, imagine the flavor of the regular version but add a crispy shell to it. It wasn't too crunchy but not in a bad way, think the texture of a chalupa shell. On my most recent visit though, the Special Mala Chicken. Oh my, this was so good. It's crispy, not overly so - stir-fried in that mala sauce. It's spicy, it's tingly and just begs you to eat more of it. We realized after ordering it, we had way too much rice. We were going to order another one but decided against it because we were getting full and ate earlier. If you're looking to get it without the rice, you can. A small order is $9. The string beans are appreciated to help round out the meal. Pretty standard stir-fried string beans but tasty. I don't know the woman's name who runs the restaurant but super sweet and very attentive. If you're in the area, absolutely give it a try. If you work in the area, I would not be surprised if you start eating this on the regular.

A small family business hainanese chicken restaurant. Support small businesses! Personally, it is not my all time favorite spot for hainan but it is worth trying. This place has such great value for what you get and the food did not feel or look too greasy at all. The chicken was juicy. The meal came with complimentary homemade wintermelon chicken soup with free refills. The chicken rice had a good color but could be more flavorful. The string beans were my favorite. It was stir fried with preserved veg. The curry with the roti was a great combination. The curry was light and could be more aromatic. The service was nice and attentive. This place is worth trying once and a spot to have a quick but hearty lunch. I would return to this place to try different dishes.

It felt like a kind of seat yourself at whatever table is empty given that the waitress (who was manning the register and taking dine in and phone orders) was quite busy. We ordered the chicken satay, chow kueh teow kway teoh and fried pearl noodles. For dine in, they also gave a kettle of tea and tea cups. There was a chef in charge of all the grilled dishes by the entrance so our chicken satay came out first. The seasoning they used on it had just the right amount of curry flavor and it was super tender too. The most tender chicken skewer I've ever had. It came with a side of peanut dipping sauce which added a nutty flavor to the chicken satay. Next came the chow keuh teow dish and we could smell the wok hei right away. This was definitely one of the favorites of the table and a must try! The star of the dish was actually the smoky wok hei flavor of the rice noodles (there were pieces of small shrimp, chicken and pork as well). The portion size of one dish is more than enough for 2 people to share. The last dish to come out were the fried pearl river noodles. They added some char siu to the noodles which added a nice flavor to the dish. It didn't have quite as strong of a wok hei flavor as the other dish but still pretty good! The pearl river noodles had the same texture as eating the tapioca balls in bubble tea. The space inside the restaurant is pretty small and any seat is fine (maybe except the one right by the door since it can get cold during winter time and the one by the register which is also next to the bathroom). I think they accept card but for these types of small mom and pop shops, it might be best to pay in cash. I'll definitely be back and have to give the bbq skate fish and one of their curry dishes a try next time!

We ordered fried noodles, a noodle soup, and Chinese spinach. The spinach was visibly old, dry, and stale -- completely inedible. The noodle soup had an off taste, as if some ingredients weren't fresh. When I flagged this to the wait staff, I was flat-out ignored. No apology, no offer to replace anything, nothing. To add insult to injury, the spinach -- the dish we couldn't eat -- was priced the same as both noodle dishes combined. That's hard to justify for a vegetable side, let alone a spoiled one. At checkout, staff pressured us to leave an 18% tip, citing their low wages. I understand tipped workers have it tough, but a tip is earned through good food and service -- neither of which we received here. I'm reporting the food quality concern to the NYC Department of Health. I'd encourage others to be cautious, especially if dining with kids.
