Pineapple fried rice

New Belacan Restaurant in Brooklyn serves traditional Malaysian food. I started off with Roti Canai as appetizer. I wish the size was bigger. Then with Hainanese Chicken which is my favorite dish whenever I dine here. I've been here a few times and I always find their food taste delicious. I went during 6pm for dinner and it wasn't packed. Food came out fast. It is clean inside the restaurant. They have wooden tables. It's a relaxed atmosphere suitable for quick meals or socializing. They definitely have raised up the price.

Grew up eating here. Was my first time dining-in in more than 15 years. Was nice to see a refreshed table layout with the same tables. Felt like home. Arrived at 7pm on a Saturday. They had business but still plenty of open seats for pairs and fours. We indicated 2 people and they kindly gave us a table for four - they must've known. We ordered Penang kueh teow, Malaysian style ong choy, fried calamari with salt and pepper, Malay fried chicken wings, hot and sour soup, coconut rice, sugar cane juice & Malaysian iced coffee. Each dish was delicious but I looked forward to the kueh teow and ong choy most. They did not disappoint. Although I did wish they used the wider flat noodles, they did not detract from the flavor - I could taste the fiery wok. Ong choy was also packed with spices and I could taste a hint of curry in addition to the belacan - very nice. We noticed two other tables order wings and we didn't want to miss out so we added those too. They were much bigger up close. Four per order; each the size of Shaq's hand, they're massaged with curry powder before going for a swim in oil. Crispy and so hot we had to let them rest before splitting them - great value. The fried calamari with salt and pepper was addictive. I wish there was more and I thought the diced bell pepper and fresh onion squares were a nice addition. Hot and sour soup hit. We ordered the large not realizing how big it was. Recommend this size for parties of 4 or more. Sugar cane was good. Would get another of that next time. Malaysian iced coffee is the 3-in-1 instant. I thought it was pour-over; wouldn't get again. Service: attentive. They brought us a fresh plate and napkins when the wings arrived and were quick to remove dishes as we emptied them. I liked that different waitresses happily attended to us - one even had a pep in her step. It's nice feeling like the employees want to be there. We grabbed Kaya puffs and Peanut cookies to go. The Kaya puffs were underwhelming (coming from a Kaya fiend) - I could barely taste the coconut and the shell smelled like pop tarts. Not sure if its a freshness issue... Peanut cookies were delicious though. Super nutty. Would return

I have passed by this Malaysian spot many times and finally gave it a try. I'm glad I've gave it a try and then found out about their lunch special. The food was pretty good and tasty. I had the Indian Mee Goreng and it was very tasty and drier than other places I tried which is good. The Hainanese chicken was tasty too. As some places take the bones off this one was included. The roti canai was the least favorite as it wasn't the very thin ones that I'm used to and seem more like the ones from supermarkets. The Nasi Lemark has so much texture and combination and this is a dish that can never go wrong. Lastly, the Hakka noodles with soup is a dish my dad enjoyed but I personally wouldn't get it. The crispy fishies add really nice flavors though. The service was attentive and they give you space and let you enjoy your food until you're ready. The interior is pretty big and can hold big and small groups.

Nasi lemak lunch special and the hainan chicken (leg) lunch special.

You can't beat the price of the weekday lunch special. Got the hainan chicken and the nasi lemak. Both were good. Maybe because we just had half a banh mi per person, so we were stuffed for hours.

Fish Curry Laksa

The chicken of the roti canai was so soft. The roti was nice and crispy. My favorite was the saucy captain noodles! Also very soft and flavorful. Couldn't finish the plate since the portion was large. Fish curry laksa was good, not very spicy so it's good for soup. Service was fast and the workers were very polite, attentive, and they speak different languages/dialects. Nicely decorated with dim lighting which was relaxing.

Delicious Malaysian food. Is a place to eat that isn't expensive or far from Brooklyn

Great service. Our waitress was so kind and accommodating. The curry was very tasty and the fresh lumpia was good. Roti canai is also a great appetizer.

Came here for lunch to order something quick and easy. With it being in Brooklyn, parking is semi difficult to find. Standard Asian restaurant custom with it being in 8th Avenue of Brooklyn - brought over hot tea for the table which was enjoyable. They do speak English as well as Chinese. It was not crowded when I went and was able to sit anywhere. We ordered the Needle Noodles [stir fried noodle with minced pork]. Although it only has pork in the description, it did come with chicken and shrimp too. Lots of bean sprouts and leeks as well. We also ordered the Roti Telur. It didn't have a description on the menu but it's like an Indian pancake with a curry dipping sauce. The curry was alright, not a ton of flavor but still good for dipping. The only thing I didn't really enjoy was that the pancake had raw red onions in it (cut up). It was deliciously crispy though. We split the meal and was very affordable. Bill came out to $20. It's a quick lunch and it was good as well for the price we paid! Very friendly staff as well.

This is a decent Malaysian restaurant. The service was a bit slow while there wasn't much traffic that day. I ordered a Captain Noodle dish and the food was not bad. I definitely recommend coming here to eat the price and portions are good.

The ginger chili sauce is given in such small amounts and isn't flavorful enough to give that oomph chicken rice has. The Asam laksa I would skip, it's nothing to write home about. Char Kway Teoh has that good wokhei flavor and we rec. The teh Tarik and white kopi were quite watery so I'd skip that too, but the limeade was great!

My favorite was probably the Hainanese Chicken, which was relatively tender. String beans were quite good too because their belacan was flavorful. On the other hand, I found the Curry Young Tao Fu to be a little underwhelming, especially the bland tofu. As for the Roti Cani, that pancake was somewhat doughy, but the curry sauce was good. I did order the Chow Kueh Teow, but they did not serve it. We were too full anyway, so we decided to save that for our next visit. Unfortunately, this restaurant is far from my home. My mom didn't enjoy the chewiness as much but she said it was a good experience. The mixed satay came with both chicken and beef. We enjoyed it enough to order another round to go but this time we opted for beef only. The sauce that comes with it is as equally delicious. Highly recommend coming here to try the fried pearl noodles and the beef satay.

Our table of six ordered Hainese chicken, stir fried Chinese watercress, stir fried noodles (not sure which ones these were), this taro nest with chicken and cashew dish, and roti canai. Overall everything was pretty solid. No complaints with the Hainese chicken, but it could have been a bit saltier. The sauce with it was pretty decent, but I enjoy the chicken itself being seasoned. I'm not sure which exact noodles we got, but they were decent as well. They were stir fried with beef and had a soy sauce flavor. The taro nest dish was also good with the fried taro being a good balance to the chicken stir fry dish inside. Roti canai was standard, but I wish it was warmer. The sauce was the typical curry sauce with a piece of chicken inside. Stir fried watercress with belacan (shrimp) sauce is good too. The belacan sauce wasn't overpowering which I appreciate. I would come back here again for a quick, hearty meal. It ended up being around $35 ish per person so not too bad for the large amount of food ordered.

I wish they had a vegetarian Rijsttafel (like in the places we found in Amsterdam), but they had a ton of vegetarian dishes regardless. I went a little overboard and ordered the tofu sate, gado gado, and kare sayur. The tofu sate with the peanut sauce was amazing, but my favorite was the gado gado. I was so happy. That peanut sauce is incredible. The waitress said the kare sayur is a popular dish with vegetarians, but it didn't blow me away like the other dishes. We opted for the 15 course dinner that samples through their entire menu. It is a perfect amount of food for two people and I recommend this experience very much. The meal starts with a cozy chicken and noodle broth soup which was so warming and comforting, just what the doctor ordered in this weather. The second round of food was two types of salad and a corn fritter. I loved the pickled salads as they had a nice crunch to them and tasted delicious. The fritters are a good size but a little bit greasier than I liked. The last round is where all the curries are brought out on a hot plate. There's shrimp, lamb, beef rendang, chicken, tofu etc. There's also white rice and skewers of chicken and beef satay coated in a delicious peanut sauce. Some of the curries I liked very much - like the fried tofu and the sauce on the shrimp curry was divine. Beef rendang fell a little flat for me as it wasn't as decadent, thick or spicy like authentic rendang is. The lamb curry had a sweet taste which I found a little odd. The chicken satay was juicy and delicious but the beef satay was rubbery and hard to chew and a weird texture. I definitely expect better from a satay skewer. Our server was kind and kept the flow of the food going. The final course is a little coconut pandan flan which was very very good but the texture is firmer than what I like. Flan should definitely be a bit softer and creamier. Either way it's tough to nail a 15 course dinner expertly but I do think if they made a few needed changes to the quality of food this would easily be a 5 star experience! If you live nearby, definitely give this beautiful cozy family run restaurant a try!!
