Bleh. Everyone had told us that this place was so good- they lied. The food is very typical teriyaki take out. The service is horrible and slow and the food taste isn't all that great. I've been pretty disappointed with the sushi selections in Kitsap County, but I realize my opinion is biased. I moved here from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where I had dozens of fantastic sushi places to choose from, so it's natural to be disappointed with the options here. Someone recommended Hakata to me as being better than the other place across town, so I gave it a try. The sushi was fine, probably better than the other sushi place in town, but I felt like I got ripped off. For $17, I walked out with two small rolls and two pieces of nigiri tuna (maguro). The rolls at the other sushi place in town are a lot bigger. I ordered one California Roll and one Ninja Roll. Each gave me 6 very small rolls (slightly larger than what I'm used to for kappa maki). To make matters worse, they violate their agreement with the credit card companies and require a minimum dollar value of $25 to use a credit card. They better hope nobody reports it to the credit card companies, because they'll revoke their permission to use credit cards. The lady who took my order was deadpan serious, not particularly enthusiastic or excited that I wanted to place an order to go. I might give this place another try sometime, but I'm probably more likely to go to the other place when I need my sushi fix. read more

I've lived in the Pacific Northwest back when it USED to be very diverse unlike today. I was so shocked that there even was a Japanese restaurant Silverdale doesn't strike me as a great cultural hub. I ordered food dined in It was great . However I wasn't really crazy that one of the customers was staring at me. I grew UP on Japanese food since I was a teen eating over at my bff's home over on Beacon Hill in Seattle. She was from Japan & grew up during the war. I will be back but I will get my food to go. I'm hoping that they have vegetarian or vegan as I no longer eat meat due to food poisoning I contracted (not from Hakata) from a grocery store. Love this restaurant. read more

A coworker introduced me to this place as I'm still new to this area. I normally only eat sushi at a few select choices in Seattle, but since moving to Kitsap County I had to scout out some new spots. Hakata's has highly skilled sushi chefs, you can sit at the bar to watch them and a great selection to choose from. Before the meal they bring you a bowl of soup to begin with and their tea is pretty good. We ordered off the lunch menu and shared 5 different rolls! I am rating this place 4/5 stars because they have really obscure hours and they set a minimum to use a debit or credit card which I find a bit tacky. The place could use a remodel too. Other than that it's a decent place to go for lunch. Helpful tips: They seem to close between lunch and dinner and are closed certain days of the week (even though the sign may read open) so be sure to call ahead before you visit. read more

We came in expecting great things, especially given the $$ rating. While the food (Pork tonkatsu ramen, gyoza, and a bento box lunch) was very tasty, it was not knock your socks off tasty. The menu didn't include many things including the ramen, that I asked for, not did it include dessert items. I recently ate at Dashi, a ramen house in Durham, NC, and their ramen (at $13.50, a single dollar more than what I had at Hakata) blew Hakata's out of the miso soup! So, you won't walk away from Hakata feeling like you've had the worst food, or even a bad meal, you won't have had a great meal, and your wallet will be quite a bit lighter for the wear. read more

What a gem! Brings me back to Japan. Diverse offerings that cover the gambit of traditional Japanese fare. We had the sukiyaki, ramen, and a specialty roll, each of which was on point. We were honestly sad that we had not discovered this place sooner. Way better that the three other competing, so-called "Japanese" places in Silverdale. This place is obviously owned by Japanese. I you want the real deal, go Hakata, for Americanized and Chinese knock-offs, go elsewhere. We'll be back soon. When it comes to Japanese food, Hakata is a real gem on the Seattle dining scene. Tucked away in an anonymous strip mall next to the Silverdale Home Depot, Hakata is a family-run powerhouse turning out great sushi, sashimi and mouth-watering Japanese dishes that rival Mom's home cooking. While not a fine dining experience, Hakata is a cozy casual place where you can enjoy some tasty sushi and libations after work, or take a date for some wonderful food. You can opt to take a place at the bar with master chef Sugi-san, or be seated at a table. It's best to come early though because Hakata fills up quickly, particularly on weekends when crowds swell the neighboring Kitsap Mall. It's difficult to choose a place to start. Everything that I've sampled on the menu has been excellent. At lunch, you can order a-la carte or enjoy the daily bento special, a great value that will leave you stuffed and happy without emptying your wallet. I also like the katsu-don, which is a breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet spread atop a mound of steaming rice and vegetables with an egg mixed in. Beef or chicken sukiyaki taste like they're homemade by someone who knows what they're doing. Tempura is also excellent here. If you like fish, try the salmon (sake) or mackerel (saba) shioyaki, which is a grill cooking technique using salt. Dinner mixes up the menu a bit, and some lunch items are not available. Good appetizers to start with here include the grilled squid (ika tsukeyaki), Japanese potstickers (gyoza), and grilled chicken skewers (yakitori). The nigiri and sashimi menu is fairly standard in terms of the fishes available (tuna, albacore, salmon, yellowtail, red snapper, etc.) but it's always fresh and comes in large portions. My favorite maki (rolls) are the Ichiro roll, a combination of smoked salmon and tempura asparagus, as well as the spicy tuna roll (two varieties available, with or without garlic). Nearly all meals at Hakata also include a complimentary appetizer of the day; it could be some edamame (soybeans), oshinko (pickled cabbage), or some seasoned bean sprouts. All are simple but delicious. The family does a wonderful job of getting food from the kitchen to your table straightaway, and they are a fun and friendly bunch of folks. Most surprising to me is the incredible value of this restaurant. Meals here regularly cost perhaps a third less than a comparable visit to other Japanese establishments in Seattle. That is no reflection on the quality though, which is top-notch in virtually every respect. It's not the swankiest restaurant I've ever been in, but the food served here is genuine and heartfelt, and a real slice of Japanese cuisine that you should not miss. read more

I miss Sugi! We've frequented Hakata for almost 30 years, it has been our favorite go-to in Kitsap county....then it changed hands. They were pretty true to the flavor for a while, but the last 3 times I've been in it's gone down hill taste and quality wise. Why didn't they just keep the formula that worked? No friendly greetings, waves from the sushi chef, or ambience. Dumplings were hard, sauces were "off", didn't even finish the food it was so ho-hum. Won't be back. read more

We have been loyal customers since Sugi opened in 93, nearly 30 years. And this was the first time in that 30 year history the food was terrible. We wanted to get dinner bentos as we normally do as it has good variation of sushi, tempura, miso soup, etc. There wasnt an option for a dinner bento. So i ended up going with the Yakiniku. First off, i could tell it was pre-cut meat and more than likely frozen. The beef was incredibly dry and if it wasnt for the little bit of sauce on the bottom, it would have been inedible. The rice (which to me this is a sin) was overcooked and hard. Japanese cooking (as i am Japanese myself) is just as much presentation as it is good tasting food. i picked up our order to go and it was in tiny plastic containers. It's so sad to see under new management, they didn't carry on Sugi's incredible legacy. I hate to say it, but i can't see this place lasting more than a few years without drastic changes. Heck, they even charge 8 cents for a takeout plastic bag. they didn't just cut corners, they cut everything. I unfortunately won't be back. I wish they changed the name of Hakata's because Sugi would be livid if he saw how the quality of the food was. read more

The best in Kitsap! Has been for over 20 + years that I've been eating there. Sushi is always fresh! They don't put avocado or cream cheese in every sushi roll like other places, and the rolls with crab are actual crab, not imitation. The sushi rolls may look smaller than other places but it's quality and not overloaded with rice. Tempura, teriyaki, tonkatsu, it's all been great every time! Love the miso and pickled sprouts that come with entree's. Green tea by the pot comes with your meal as well, and they refill it at no charge. I'll add some pics! read more

I wish they had outdoor seating and a selection of local beers as the Japanese beers are very light. But we come for the food and not the beer. read more

I love this place!! They offer pretty authentic Japanese cuisine with handrolls, specialty rolls, sashimi, and lunch time bento boxes. The wait staff is very accommodating and easily make small adjustments to the meals to suit any special dietary needs. We often pay in cash to get free dessert-a scoop of ice cream for us both in a wide assortment of flavors. My favorite are green tea and red bean! read more

Honestly the best and most AUTHENTIC Japanese food you can get on this side of the water. It doesn't get better than Hakata. The sushi and sashimi is always fresh and delicious. Their entrees are made to perfection (my favorites include unaju, sukiyaki, and katsudon). And their tempura ice cream is to die for. Had lunch there today under the new management .... We have patronized this restaurant under the old owners for over 23 years and never had a bad experience. We've been anxious to continue to offer this restaurant our patronage and support. What a disappointing experience. The new owners have changed the cash register/ greeting to the front. Bad idea as there is a huge bottle neck for incoming patrons that want to eat in and take out orders and people paying their bill. We politely stood for 10 min waiting to be acknowledged....... Finally when we were directed to a table it hadn't been cleaned off ( restaurant was 50% or less full) and stood by until someone scurried around to take previous diners dishes off and then gestured for us to sit down without them wiping down table with a sanitized cloth.... It took them 30 min for us to get served and the entree came without the soup and bean sprouts appetizer....... We only got them because we asked in the middle of our meal. The food was not up to the standards of our old Hakata owners. They had lots of help but were so disorganized .... Doubtful we'll return and will look at other dining options read more

Oh, no. This used to be one of the premier places to eat in Silverdale; it was fast, efficient, always friendly and absolutely consistent. Have had at least 50 meals there. Today we came in at 1:30. "The kitchen is closed." Door sign says they close at 2. We express disappointment. They shrug. We go around the corner to Green Garden Pho and all is well. Seems almost criminal the new Hakata owners could louse up a really wonderful product. Will give them one more chance. Makes me honestly sorry to leave such a poor review of such a formerly wonderfully managed restaurant. Chungs, anyone? read more

I have lived in Japan for 11 years. Hakata brings me home to Japan. Japanese food is all about balance, not too sweet, not too salty, or overwhelming taste. I hear people saying that Hakata is not authentic Japanese food. I am not Japanese, and I was fortunate to be stationed in Japan. I've been to other so-called Japanese restaurants in the area where people rave that they are better than Hakata. Not even close. Japanese food is all about balance in taste and presentation. Even with the change of owner, they still give us the taste of Japanese home meals. For normal Japanese restaurant, Hakata offer more selection than most Japanese restaurant. Hakata is the place where it reminds me of a Japanese home-cooked meal. If you want to experience genuine Japanese cuisine made out of passion, Hakata is the place you're looking for to dine. read more

I've been coming to hakata for about 5yrs now and I absolutely LOVE the sweet/spicy orange sauce that Sugi makes. Their albacore tataki, beef sashimi, baked mussels, OMG roll, and ichiro roll are all my favorites. Yum. As for the service, I've never had an issue with anyone being rude to me. I understand they are busy busting their behinds to feed all of us, so I'm not offended if they don't want to sit and chat with me. They get my order right and that's all that matters to me lol. Sugi has always been friendly and remembers me every time i come in.... and I'm from Seattle! So it seems to me that he cares about his loyal customers. The longest I've ever waited was 25 minutes (on a Friday) and that was for the sushi bar. Other seats at tables usually become available much quicker. My food always comes out hot and fresh, they treat me well, and they offer that sauce which i can't find ANY WHERE else - I'll keep coming back! read more

Recently tried Hakata for the first time and ordered using their online process, which was easy enough. We got two Tempura dinners, plus two rolls: a caterpillar roll and a summer Seattle roll. The food was delicious, fresh and ready when it was supposed to be. Unfortunately, the miso soup that was supposed to come with our dinner (and one of the reasons we ordered the full meal) was not included, so one star off. We will try again. read more

We enjoyed Hakata for almost 30 years and always appreciated consistently high quality food and service. When the original owners retired and sold the restaurant, we noticed a downturn in the overall food and service experience but figured it was due to transition issues and staff changes. We decided to give them time to smooth out the bumps. Went for lunch today and it was so disappointing. Ordered our old favorites: Spicy Chicken Lunch: Not a complicated dish to cook. But it was so overcooked today, it was like chewing beef jerky. And almost tasteless. It was inedible. My lunch partner had Chirashi. Mediocre sushi rice, lackluster preparation and presentation. Chirashi lunch was served almost 20 minutes after the Spicy Chicken lunch. Staff works hard, the interior updates and overall feel are nice and we would love to see Hakata thrive...Management, you need to get it together! Good luck, we wish you well read more

We hadn't visited Hakata since the new ownership until today at lunch. We were pleasantly surprised with all the appetizers and entrees especially the gyoza and spicy chicken. The Bento was terrific as well as the sushi. We all agreed that the service was much improved. The service was prompt and friendly. Will be back very soon !!!!! I guess for the regulars this is a great joint- but having had better sushi elsewhere (try I love Sushi on Lake Union- HEAVEN!) this was just blah- My friends seems to like this place so we recently met up for dinner this past Wed around 530 PM. Our waitress took our order- I requested the California Roll and Tempura Roll and edemame, my husband ordered the spicy teriyaki. My edemame came out and I realized it was not heated as I usually take it- so I request it to be heated and the waitress would hear nothing of the sort- "We don't do that here"- um yes you do, I was just in 2x and it was heated for me. Nearly 25 minutes pass before we realize my husband's food had never come (we were in a good convo!)- They forgot!! Really? No apologies- nada- zilch none- of course when the bill came what was on there? His food that never came- the food was okay- but I've had better sushi at the Westlake Mall than at this joint- never coming back- and DO NOT RECOMMEND!! Save your money and your palette! read more

This is one of my favourite sushi places in Western Washington. The atmosphere here is great. It has a cozy, nice little bar, and not alot of tables. I recommend, if there are three in your party or less, you sit at the bar and let the chef take you for a little ride. There are alot of sushi chefs in the big city that are only interested in the money. Sugi is the real deal and Silverdale is lucky to have him. He travels frequently to pick his fish and cares deeply about his art and trade. I am happy to say that I have been served by him. Easily my favorite lunch spot in Silverdale. I come at least once a month to sit at the sushi bar to chat with Sugi and enjoy some quality sushi. My coworker and I agree that Sugi has the best saba (mackerel) and rivals even some of the best at sushi spots in Seattle. A very overlooked nigiri choice, saba is often over brined and entirely too salty. At Hakata, it's tender and buttery just like it should be. Other favorites include the spicy tuna #3, which is a nice take on a spicy tuna roll with the added spice of habanero. They also have a delicious beef sashimi that I can't say I've seen anywhere in Seattle. The scallop nigiri is exactly what I would expect - two thin slices of full size scallops (not the baby ones) with a dollop of spicy mayo on top over the perfect amount of rice wrapped in nori. Don't miss it! The tako in the takoyaki is of decent size and is cooked perfectly. I feel sometimes it can be a little doughy, but I still love to order it. If you're lucky, Sugi may have some of his highly coveted curry on the stove. This stuff might as well be an airline ticket to Japan, because that's exactly where it takes me. Homemade on rare occasions, it goes perfectly over a bed of rice and is a great comfort food! People that complain about the service need to understand that Sugi and Troy can only do so much at a time. Making nigiri to order takes time and its freshness should be appreciated. I feel that if you're in a rush don't come to a sushi restaurant. read more

They are extremely busy almost all of the times that I have been here and there is always a line before they even open. This is not the typical Japanese take out or teriyaki kind of place. They are also not the overly trendy Japanese roll type of place either. They offer a decent variety of Japanese food and a good selection for those that haven't had a lot of Japanese food before. This one would have had higher reviews, but my husband and I were both sick after eating the spider roll (the soft shell crab), and I found pin bones in my salmon sushi. Not cool. I'll find another sushi restaurant. Or make my own. Yam tempura was undercooked. Actually, all the tempura was undercooked. The high chairs don't work properly. I had my very first ever Sushi experience here. I remember that day very well, +you know how you never forget the first? ;) The food here is exceptional, I have yet to have a bad experience. The Sushi Chef is the Owner and is always behind the bar counter smiling. He sure prepares it well, very fresh!! The Tea is good! Most of the meals come with Miso soup and Kobachi. If sushi is not your style check out the dishes like Tempura Udon or Spicy Chicken. The Service you get is here is Good! Be friendly to the staff, and they will be friendly to you. When I Lived in the Bremerton/Silverdale area, I would go here frequently. Now when I think of it, the next time I'm in town I will stop by and visit. Check this place out if you are ever in town!! Love this place! I always want to try something new, but I always get the same thing - The Hakata Bento and the Ika Karaage appetizer! It always feeds me for two meals. The Hakata bento comes with sashimi (it changes, but it always has come with ahi), shrimp tempura, veggie tempura, rice, miso soup, salad, teriyaki chicken, california roll and izakaya (usually bean sprouts). I love the ika karaage because its just so flavorful! Yummy little bar snack. I don't drink, so really its just a yummy snack! I also love that when you pay with cash you can get free ice cream! I get a scoop of green tea, but they also have other flavors like mango and coconut. The servers are nice and I like watching the chefs at the bar make sushi. Last time I went, Grandma was back there making tempura! Great little family run place and reminds me of the Japanese places back home in Hawaii! Yummy! read more

We've been coming to this restaurant in the FedEx strip mall in Silverdale for more years than I care to remember. We started coming here only on wife's birthday as I wasn't much of a fan of Japanese cuisine or sushi. Over the years my palate has developed to the point that this has become the "go to place" whenever we decide to dine out. We started bringing our granddaughter soon after she came to live with us when she was in the fourth grade and, I must admit, she is a much more adventurist eater than I am. I still am not overly fond of sushi but Hakata's presentation is beautiful . The specials are always interesting and tasty. The service at this family owned and operated restaurant is always superb. Hakata's is always busy, especially on weekend nights. It observes the traditional Monday closure. I highly recommend this restaurant and sushi bar to anyone looking for a medium priced restaurant with interesting food and excellent service. read more

How did I miss this place?!? Amazingly authentic Japanese food. My first time there I had the chirashi and squid appetizer. The chirashi rice was slightly sweet and sticky like it is supposed to be, and the fish was fresh and sliced perfectly. The squid was grilled to perfection! I had katsudon for my most resent meal and the egg over the fried pork was savory and sweet at the same time, definitely a very umami meal! And delirious too! read more

I have been a loyal customer of this restaurant for 21 years now and have never once been disappointed. Not an exaggeration to say I have eaten here over 50 times. The sushi is just phenomenal. Sugi was a master sushi maker, but unfortunately he decided to finally retire after many years. The new owners of the place appear to be carrying on the quality without a hitch - at least I cannot discern a difference. I recommend the albacore tataki / omg roll / crunchy roll / rock n' roll / Ichiro roll and the black cod. You'll not be disappointed for sure. Busy with repeat customers, and by 30 minutes after opening, there were probably 15 people waiting for a seat. That's a good sign! I ordered some maki, all of which were less than impressive. They were skimpy on fish, the rice was not quite right, and the construction was kind of sloppy really (like the way I do them). But, the bento (which I should have ordered) looked really good, and was reasonably priced (for Japanese). So, not exactly blown away, but I'd go back for a bento. read more

I hate to write a review for a place this good, for fear you'll steal the seats at the sushi bar. The chef Sugi is entertaining and kind, passing across delicious treats with a smile. It's fun to watch the kitchen churn. Before I lived here this was my #1 stop on our way back from the airport, and now that I live here, it's pretty much the only place I go out to eat. The tuna tataki is the best way to start, and the goduck is great. If you like spice, ask for a spicy tuna or salmon roll. Everything I've had here is fresh. Well done. read more
