Getting nostalgic about all the street meat carts I used to eat from in NYC back in the day. Though I vaguely recall combos costing like $5 back then, whereas it's $17 for a similar portion in San Francisco today. But it's good eating and you're bound to have a little leftover to snack on for dinner. Combo Rice - Extra Meat: Fluffy yellow long grain rice that doesn't clump together is such a nice base. The chicken is pull apart tender and nicely spiced. The gyro is kinda like that generic loaf you get all over the place, but the fact that they give it in the form of ground meat, instead of slices, is a nice change. Then the sauce. Love that tangy white sauce with herbs. Was super psyched to see the fresh creamy green sauce too. And that spicy red sauce adds a nice tang. The veggies were just enough to add some freshness, but not overwhelming. They actually taste better than the limp lettuce I remember from the NYC carts, probably because California produce is great. Falafel Wrap: This is very hearty of vegetarian! Lots of falafels, all of which are thick. Nice grainy chickpea batter and some whole chicken peas in the mix for each deep fried nugget. I believe This is the same Halal cart from WAY back when, pre pandemic. There were like 3 carts all spread out in the Fidi. When I used to work downtown, this would be my number ONE go to spot and it always hit the SPOT. Super better than the Halal Guys (no shade just saying!) back then they didn't even give out the to go sauce containers. First tried them out in 2015 and they probably were there before that! Right across from 455 Market Street where I worked. I always get the combo over rice and a chicken gyro with HELLA white sauce! I love their spicy sauce but beware it's hottttt!!! And they have a green sauce now which is a cilantro creamy sauce! I love it. So glad they're back. Love you guys!!! p.s. bring cash! But they do accept Apple Pay. On my way to the office, I saw a new NYC-style halal food cart that I've never seen before, so I knew I had to give it a try. I'm obsessed with NYC food carts, so to see one pop up was really cool. Located on Market St, near Salesforce Park, this unassuming cart offers gyros and my favorite chicken over rice. Being that it was it was my first time, I had to get the combo meat platter which was $15. Luckily I had cash, because there is an extra fee for using credit/debit. I thought the chicken was the star of the show, Really juicy, flavorful and the rice they had tasted super fresh. The gyro meat wasn't my fav, so next time around I would go for all chicken. The have their white sauce and red sauce that you add on yourself. They have a sign that says their red sauce is spicy, but I didn't find that to be the case. As someone who loves really spicy (like the ones in NYC), I was bummed it wasn't burn my mouth hot. If they add an extra spicy sauce, I'd be down to try that. The portion size was pretty good and plenty for a big appetite like myself. Fidi doesn't have as many options as it once did, plenty of chain food spots, so to see a new local place open up like Halal Cart SF, makes this a welcome addition to the area. Halal Cart will definitely be on the rotation for office days for me because the service is quick, the food is tasty, portion sizes are good, and most importantly, it's affordable by city standards. read more

My coworker recently introduced me to this hidden gem of a food cart, just a block away from my office. One bite of the combo plate and I was impressed -- absolutely delicious. The flavors reminded me of the original Halal Guys in NYC (the sf Hala Guys is not good). In my opinion, the portions are generous enough for two meals. Saving some for later takes a little extra work, since you have to separate the salad before reheating, but it is completely worth it. My lunch buddy ends up eating too much to save so tried her hardest to finish it... big mistake, lol! For $16.50 (includes tax and fees) is not a bad deal for lunch in the FiDi. Absolutely blown away with the quality of the service and the food! I dropped by for an early lunch and asked the man working the cart if he recommended chicken or beef. When I still had trouble deciding, he offered me samples of both to try! He gave me generous portions with sauce and was so kind by checking if the spice level was okay with me. Meal is large enough that you feel full. Food tastes fresh and doesn't make me sick. Carts clean enough. Flavors and textures are a bit reminiscent of what you would find in NYC but a bit off. My husband always used to bring me some when he work that Muni Line! And then after Covid they kind of took a break and yes we were sad! But so happy to see their back! Hubby doesn't bid that line anymore because of that reason, crazy but true! It's too late this bid and will have to wait for the next one! Service was quick and the gyro wrap was a generous portion (more than I needed, in fact). The flavor was above average from my experience at other halal carts (mostly in NYC). The food is delicious and plentiful, however beware of the 3X up charge for using a credit card. Rather than charge 3% for using a credit card, they charge 10% in pocket the extra. So expect an extra $1.50 for your $15 falafel. Worse off, there's no sign saying they charge such a high premium! If they ever add a sign that clearly states their policy plus reduces their up charge to a reasonable 3-4%,, I'll update them to a five star review. read more

This is my weekly go to for tasty food! Generous portions. I order the same thing every week. Extra meat gyro over rice. The plate also comes with a side salad. I put extra white sauce on the meat and salad. I also sprinkle the hot sauce on the gyro meat. Always hot and fresh, the salad is cold. Pita/Naan bread is warm. Kumar is always smiling and knows my order when I arrive. They take cash or card/apple pay. They just started serving mango lassi! Yummy! In highly recommended this great new addition to the menu. i have been anxiously awaiting the return of the infamous halal cart since they closed during the pandemic. i no longer work in the city but made a special trip once i saw they were back in business. unfortunately, this is not the same halal cart i remember. it seems as if the food is made off site and kept stored at the cart, because what i received was cold. the food i received didn't come with the same toppings in the picture and the portion sizes were smaller, but of course the price had increased to $15, which seems a bit steep for cart food with no available seating (even for SF). i did like the addition of the self-serve condiment table but overall, i walked away feeling let down. the gyro plate just doesn't hit like it used to, even after warming it up. i hate to say it - but if i wanted a mediocre gyro plate at this price, i could just go to halal guys (yikes!). idk if new ownership is involved or what happened but i hope eventually they can return to the pre-COVID halal cart we all knew and loved. read more
