Being new we had to try and we're pleased with the decor. The place was packed but seating time was minimal. Our waitress was nice and professional and and we had no complaints on attentiveness and timely food delivery. We had the oysters on the half shell and an appetizer and were satisfied with the quality of the food. Not good at all. Very bad experience. It was our 20th anniversary. The salad we got was black on the bottom. I'm not exaggerating it was black leaves on the bottom of it. The food did not have much taste and the service was lackluster at best. This is not an inexpensive restaurant. We enjoyed our drinks and the oyster sampler appetizer. It had four types of oyster preparations, three of each, so our group had several varieties each, with no fighting!! We enjoyed the bread for soaking up all the goodness and lemons to add a zing! The food arrived shortly after we had polished off the oysters! (We almost wish we could have had another dozen, but we wanted to save room for the entrees!) Everyone ordered something different, so several made mental notes of future entrees to order!! And each was tasty and generous portions. The crème brûlée sweet potato casserole, shrimp and grits, fried okra, seafood au gratin snapper and cup of gumbo were standouts. Our daughter comes home from college and requests oysters. So, we went to Half Shell Oyster House in Pelham, Al. Unfortunately the service was terrible. We walk in to a nearly empty restaurant and are told it will be a 10 minute wait.....so we provided our information and took a seat right by the receptionist. After a few minutes a couple (who did not look like us) walks in. The receptionist asks how many people and immediately seats them at a booth. So we all looked at each other. The receptionist returned and still did not seat us. My husband went up and inquired as to why the other party was sat before us. The receptionist had the audacity to say she forgot about us....Ma'am we are sitting right here in your face! So she sat us and we asked to speak to the manager. She goes over and explains everything to the manager. After she talks to the manager, they both walk away. But not towards us! Our server comes to take our order and Alex is super nice. He can tell we are not happy. We explain we are waiting to talk with the manager. Meanwhile the manager is standing at the front doing nothing!!. So once again my husband goes up front to inquire as to why he has not made his way to our table. Seeing that the conversation is not going anywhere we decide to leave. As I join the conversation the manager makes every excuse as to why he never came to our table and he goes so far as to say the receptionist never told him that we wanted to see him. Of course I immediately asked the receptionist if this was true. She said it was not. We told him with her standing there,"You were told we wanted to talk to you and you did not have to lie!" He just stood there looking simple...smh. The server also mentioned he tried to get the manager to come over but he wouldn't. When situations happen, please MANAGE them ! Okay so today was my 17th birthday and this place made it 100x better! (My server was the best part!) Elana toke wonderful care of me and my family and gave us a run down of everything we needed to know! She even asked if we've been there before and her response was amazing, she was extremely helpful and patient! What more could you ask for. Well I can tell you. We started out with the crab claws for an app (the special app of the day) 10/10! The yellow fin was to die for, perfectly rare as well. (Whoever cooked it knows how to handle fish that's for sure!) my oysters were to die for as well and will be getting again, grilled to perfection. The red fish was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The sea food pot pie is like no other I've ever tried (first time liking a pot pie may I add) she served us desert (blueberry cheese cake, if they don't have it you came on the wrong day) overall it was terrific and I will be going more often, pricey but some of the best seafood I've had. (Bitter spots in the sweet potato dish, for example) Yesterday, after waiting 24 minutes for a table in a half-full restaurant, we left after waiting for 14 minutes without being approached by a server. We have a limited time and budget to treat ourselves to a dinner out...this is THE place! We both love seafood and also visit Cajun Boys and their Po'boys. For about the same price, Half Shell is a date night for more refined dining. Service is spot on and food is always fresh. The freshest, biggest oysters on the half-shell you'll find in the Birmingham area. Outdoor or indoor seating is offered. I, embarrassingly, did not consider ability on my two visits. I will next time, unless the owner posts first! If you are with seafood allergic or aversion folks in your party, there are plenty of non-seafood items on the menu. Love this place! read more

I came here yesterday for the first time with my family for my husband's birthday. I ordered the seafood sampler. I asked the waiter at the beginning of service if I could substitute fries for another side on the back of the menu,& he said absolutely, so I ordered broccoli and a cup of bisque. When I received our check, I was charged an additional $7.25 for a cup of bisque instead of the $3 listed on the back of the menu to replace soup as a side. When I asked the waiter about the charge, he said I thought you could substitute the fries, but you can't,& broccoli was your side. I said I never got the fries. Then he left all of our checks on the table, went to the kitchen,& brought out a to-go box of fries and closed out all of our checks. I wouldn't have ordered the bisque had I known it was going to cost an additional $7.25 for a tiny cup. I really don't like being lied to! I will never come back here again! read more

So it's about our 4th trip to this location and have been to several around town and in MS and LA. Decided to sit at bar tonight --- maybe not best idea- it took 15 mins in an un-busy situation like we were the only ones at bar at 8:30, to get a drink order . Then placed dinner order at same opportunity in the interest of expediency. Took another 30 mins to get raw oysters that arrived with one tiny cocktail and no lemon. Had to ask twice about our entrees. Bartender disappeared for 10 mins. So we finally left at 9:45 after having 2 bartenders' shifts and an hour and half at the bar. We ordered 12 raw oysters, an oyster PoBoy and a bowl of Gumbo between the two of us- ridiculous! This is a great restaurant! Only issues were our server was not that great. Took a while to get our drinks, asked for straws and never got them, nit once did he offer any refills and when we asked he just brought the check while we were still eating and no refill for our drinks. The food was amazing but I think they should rinse their oysters, I bit into several large chunks of shell pieces and could've sworn I chipped a few teeth. I have eaten at multiple Half Shell locations and this one is by far the worst. Two people at our table got the snapper and it was not edible so it was sent back. No one asked if we wanted anything else. Another person at the table got the seafood pasta and all the seafood looked and tasted like it was previously frozen.
