Very tasty food with very friendly staff. I had a halfway house 1/2 lb burger with bacon and fried red onions -- juicy and excellent (bbq sauce on it was a tad sweet for my taste, perfect otherwise). Friday night I had an awesome steak. It was two for $25 steaks. The meat was tender and cooked to perfection. I also had the claim chowder and it was wonderful. The claims were tender and lots of them. Followed up with raspberry rhubarb pie with its flaky crust, yum. Traveling up to Hurricane Ridge Visitor's Center for the day, we were talking with a fellow explorer when they mentioned the pies at the Halfway House - "Best homemade pies anywhere on the Oly Penn!", they said. So, we had to try them, naturally! Arriving at the restaurant, we found plenty of parking. While definitely busy, it wasn't crowded inside. We took a seat & looked over the menu, being distracted by all the hummingbirds visiting the feeders right outside the windows. Having just enjoyed some street tacos at the Quilcene Car Show, we weren't too hungry, but I definitely needed to try out the local oysters, so ordered a lunch plate. My folks both ordered Caesar salads. The food was fantastic! Our server was very friendly, and checked on us to keep our drinks refreshed. When it came to pie time, we couldn't decide. I ordered an Apple Sour Cream Custard, which was good, but seemed to be mostly filled with raisins; I wasn't getting the apple flavor. My mom and dad both ordered the pecan pie, which was amazing! I like the name. I like to tell people I'm coming here and seeing their reaction. As far as food goes, it's kind of "halfway" like the name. The peas were half cooked, and sauces/gravy were not fully seasoned. Still, it's decent diner food that will fuel you up and keep you warm on a windy day. And you get to eat in a cozy place with friendly people. Compliments to the baker who made the pies. The crust is buttery and crumbly, instead of the usual flaky type. I get that this is "down home cookin'" but the quality is a little on the low side. We got the 2 for 1 steaks on a Friday, and they were about what you'd expect for a 2 for 1. Cheap, unsubstantial, and in dire need of A1. But the potato, salad, and corn were good. The garlic bread was really good. On the whole, this was about what I expected given the price, which is why it gets 3 stars. I can't really see how it gets 4 or 5, especially given the average service and truck stop style dining room. I'd probably stop here again, but this isn't really a diamond in the rough as some reviews would indicate. read more

There aren't many dining options in Brinnon. Luckily, one of them is the Halfway House! Located in the heart of Brinnon's 'business district' alongside Highway 101, the Halfway House is bright and cozy little restaurant in what feels like a converted living room. This place serves up good, solid homestyle breakfasts at reasonable prices. Service was spot-on as well-- the waitress made sure my coffee cup was always filled while keeping up her conversation with the locals. I haven't been in for dinner (usually head over to the Geoduck for dinner), but I'm sure it would be excellent as well. read more

This was surprisingly pleasant. We stopped here because my husband went the wrong way. I was starving and we didn't see anything on the road for probably 30 miles. We stopped at this place, and it's a house set up with a restaurant. We had steak, and the steak was amazing and very tender. It was cooked perfect. We ended up ordering like 5 pieces of pie to go because they have a huge selection of delicious homemade pies. I couldn't have been more satisfied with this place. This review is for the pie alone! Holy Moly! OUT OF THIS WORLD...and for the record, I am not really a fan of pie. That being said, let's start at the beginning. 1.) This restaurant is a bit away from it all, tucked off the 101N in Brinnon, WA. It is not the cleanest or fanciest place. Actually, I think it would be a great contender for Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Network (again for the pies). 2.) We actually ate lunch in here (prior to devouring the delicious pie). The food was good. I had a grilled ham and cheese sandwich with fries and a cup of clam chowder. All was good. Nothing blew my mind, but I think it was typical diner food. My mother-in-law and aunt each had half a sandwich (one was ham and one was turkey) with a cup of soup and salad. Both of them said the food was good. 3.) Now for the important item. The Pie. Seriously. I am going to break it down by each pie we tried. My mother-in-law ordered the triple berry cobbler (served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the top). My aunt had a slice of double crust raspberry pie (also served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the top). I went with the server's suggestion and tried the White Chocolate Toffee Pie (served cold). The triple berry cobbler was INSANE! I can't even describe the crust. I tried to get the server and baker to tell me what was in it, but was told it is a secret recipe. It melted in your mouth and was just incredible. It wasn't sweet like some crusts and retained the light color of unbaked crust, even though it was baked. It was the best crust I have ever tasted. The fruit part of the cobbler was delicious, too. The berries were marionberry, blueberry and blackberry. They were just the right amount of sweet and tart and each bite exploded with flavor. The ice cream was good, too (but I could have skipped that and just eaten the crust and the filling, which is saying something because I LOVE ice cream and usually skip the pie). The double crust raspberry pie was also good (and had lots of that homemade crust). The raspberry was a bit tarter than the cobbler, but it was still good. I definitely preferred the cobbler. The white chocolate toffee pie was good. It was a bit too decadent for me to eat more than a few bites of. Well, maybe I would have eaten more if I wasn't eating all of the triple berry cobbler. Overall, this place gets 5 stars for the pie alone. It was outstanding! I am so full I may never eat again. Okay, that's a lie. I will eventually eat the triple berry cobbler (sans ice cream) that I ordered to go. I HAD TO HAVE MORE! read more

Best pie ever!! I'm not the biggest fan of the food. However It doesn't stop me from eating here whenever I visit my parent's cabin in Brinnon. The staff is so nice & the atmosphere is so cute with all the locals. Personally I think it is a little bit expensive for what you get. Now for desserts, the best place ever!! I'm pretty sure they make everything from scratch. I will even bring back home a whole pie, they are that good!! The prices are a tad expensive, but understandable given the location. You get a fair amount of food per plate. The fries were nice, but the fried fish was just OK. It came with corn kernels on the side too but they were nothing special. I also noticed the sour cream carousel being moved from table to table. That was really strange. I didn't use it myself, but I couldn't help but imagine all of the previous diners' used forks and spoons in there before your own. The marionberry cobbler was nice albeit skimpy on the fruit. Absolutely a classic diner type. We were not camping, had I been I may not have minded some of the "diner style" service and cleanliness. I had the steak special, comes with potato and salad, my husband had the liver and onions. Yes, liver and onions. The waitress was not friendly. The big problem I had..... The butter, chives and sour cream for the potatoes was on a hand held carousel THAT WENT AROUND THE DINING ROOM. I didn't watch if used forks were going in, I took my butter and shut up. The Prime Rib is the BEST value on a Saturday night way out in the woods. You get a 4 course meal for $22.95, that's Shrimp cocktail, soup or salad, Prime Rib or the Prime Rib w/Shrimp with your choice of potatoes, vegetable, roll w/butter and a "Special Dessert." Yummy!!!!!! Skip the Timber House in Quilcene....No appetizer, no soup or salad, no roll and no dessert either unless you pay and at $34.00 per person for some grass fed beef. Go for the pies. You can't beat the homemade pies. Not an extensive pie menu, but that's the point. They make their own pies, so why overdo it? OK, on to the regular breakfast and lunch and dinner menu. Yes, they serve all day. We had breakfast and lunch. Very good, close to greasy spoon, which has an ambience all its own. Service is terrific. Fast and friendly. Place was packed on the Sunday we dined. People must know it's a good place to stop along Hwy 101. You could easily miss the restaurant as you drive through. Egg white omelette with oysters and bacon along with a side of hash browns and a biscuit. The locals hanging out and having a good time early in the morning. The wife and I stopped in at this place last summer while out on a motorcycle ride. It is kind of set back off hwy 101 (for being on 101) but it was the only restaurant we could find as we were driving south from Port Townsend. We gave it a go and fell in love with the place. Besides the food being great (and reasonable), they have a small gift shop off to the side with an espresso bar there as well. We think of this place as a well kept secret and decided we would go back sometime. For us to go back, it is a ride from Puyallup out onto the peninsula where Brinnon is. This place is... well... halfway between Port Townsend and Shelton, WA thus the name Halfway House. We have done this about 4 times now and have not been disappointed. I had the Prime Rib last night and it was exactly as ordered! Can't say enough about this place... we found out last night the owners also own an RV camping spot next door. We are planning on taking a week out there this coming summer since this is an extremely beautiful area with many places to explore. The bonus is we will have a place to eat that is not that expensive with the bonus of feeling like one of the family. The owner and her family have treated us they way they treat all their customers... with open arms and excellent customer service. I almost forgot the most important thing here... The owner (Bonnie) starts baking these awesome pies at 4 in the morning everyday just so they will be fresh for that day. My wife and I like the chocolate toffee cream pie so much we usually call ahead and have one made the day before we go, so we can bring one back home with us. We had her make several pies for us during the holidays. Se was willing to express mail them to us but we wanted to go for dinner as well. read more

Not only does this place make the best pie on the peninsula, but they also make great food! This is a sleepy little diner, but that's what makes it special. The same crowd eats there everyday, and the staff knows them all. They're friendly and hospitable, and you'll feel very taken care of.
