The staff members are always friendly and accommodating, and the prices stay reasonable and the monthly and unlimited tanning packages are a great value, the space is always clean and tidy, and the rooms offer plenty of area to change comfortably. The upkeep on the tanning units is impeccable, have never seen a light out Kyle the owner always goes out of his way to manage any request personally. Professional, clean, great staff and great value. I have been going for over a year now, and will continue to do so, plus I feel we should all support small locally owned businesses. I've never gotten a spray tan before but my sister's wedding is in April and I want to have a nice glow so I came in for a practice spray tan. Kyle was very professional and made me feel comfortable and I LOVE the results of my Level II! In the first 24 hours, I went through phases of "maybe I should've gotten Level III" and "this is too dark" but after I washed it off a day later, the color is PERFECT! Maybe it's just me, but I think that the spray tan here is a bit on the orange side. In order to get more of a brownish tan, you need spend more for the darker level spray tans. Since I was using a You Swoop, I decided against the up-charge and was going to settle for being orange. The spray tan room needs to be made a bit more private. Once you change (which for me is being topless) you're supposed to peek your head outside and call for the spray tan guy to come back. The only trouble is that peeking your head out can lead to a full view from other tanners passing by. So, either more privacy or the attendant should just wait outside until you're ready. I've been to Halsted Street Beach Tanning Salon twice for spray tans. The last time I was there I had a very nice guy doing my tan, but the first time I was there my spray tanning guy just irritated me. He kept telling me that I had wrinkles and that I should use their red light therapy system. He also told me that even though I stay hydrated, I'm probably drinking my water wrong. What the hell, guy?! If I wanted someone to tell me that I look like crap and that I'm doing things wrong, I would call my mother. read more

I decided to go there because of the other Yelp reviews, and I had such a great experience that I couldn't help writing my own. To sum it up: great decision! I was welcomed by Ricky as soon as I walked in. He's very professional-- cares about attention to detail, was cleaning when I arrived, asked me if I wanted anything to drink, explained the products to me. Then out came my dream man (well, for spray tanning of course...;) Cole made me feel comfortable right away, discussed what level of tan would be good for me, took me back to let the spraying begin!! He was hilarious, made me laugh the whole time, and made me so excited to go back. One of the main reasons I can't wait to return...not only were the guys fabulous, but: I WASN'T ORANGE...AT ALLLL! The difference at Halsted Street Beach is that these people actually care about their customers! They seemed very genuine. I feel like I got a small town attitude with a big city, quality result. I had a great facial at Halsted Street Beach. I've had facials all over the country at very luxurious resorts and spas. I have to say that this is on the same level of service and product. My complexion never looked so good! I had five people compliment my face within a few days of my facial. Matt is super good. 5 STARS! I came in for a spray tan last week, had never had one before, and wanted some quick color so I could don a bikini all weekend without blinding everyone. I have fair skin and was nervous about looking orange, but I'm telling you the color that Matt (the owner) applied was perfect! I got so many compliments; really, not orange in the least! Being my first time, I thought the tan would be applied via machine, so I was shy when I realized an actual person would be spraying me. Matt assured me that I could be as exposed as I wanted to be. He made me feel comfortable enough to bear all without reservation. Also, I attempted to wax my own legs the day before and ended up with nasty bruises. Matt recommended a cream, telling me they should be gone within 3 days. I was skeptical as I've found my bruises typically stick around for a week plus, but being a sucker for products I made the purchase. I couldn't believe it, but they really did disappear right away! One more thing -- you're not supposed to put a bra on right after, so either dress appropriately or buy a product like I did so you can hold the bag in front of you walking down the street afterward. :) I'm going to have a hard time not coming in every week... read more

I'll admit it, I have commitment problems (when it comes to signing contracts). Back in Denver I had a 6 month membership at a certain chain of tanning salons and had a terrible time getting out of it at the end .(long story) Because of this I'm always hesitant to go anywhere where a membership will be pushed on me, which is why I almost immediately fell in love with Halsted Street Beach. The location is small & nothing fancy but the guys that work here rock! Matt is hysterical & makes a point to welcome everyone that comes in. I love that you can tan for only $5 after 9pm (and open till noon), and unlike other places with late night deals the wait isn't too bad & the other clients are actually cool people (not snotty UIC students). The regular place I go to was closed on Tuesdays, so I scoured the reviews on Yelp and decided to give Halsted Street Beach a shot. I am so glad I did! I really like this place! I got a Groupon to do unlimited tanning for a month and this is by far my favorite tanning place to go to. I am not super experienced with tanning and the staff has helped me figure out what is best for my skin so I don't burn. From prior experiences in tanning beds, staff can be super dull/ snobby/rude and give you the "you don't know what you're talking about" look when you ask a question. I have never felt that way here. Matt, the owner, is VERY outgoing and makes every person who steps in the door feel like an appreciated long term client. The wifey and her cousin didn't know this was located in "Boystown". All the workers were guys, but she felt comfortable getting her spray done here. The owner small talked with us and even wanted to give me a full body wax. I just laughed and had a good time while waiting. They ended up paying $37 for 2 layers which is average price, I think. They do a lot of other services here, and there were non-stop girl customers coming through. If they are comfortable, it must a good tanning spot for the ladies. read more

I've been tanning here for few years and although I think Matt is great, there is nothing special about the tanning beds to make me want to write a yelp. Are they always clean and working? yes. Do they get you tan? yes. Are the packages fairly priced? yes. HOWEVER, I stopped in for a quick tan before a trip to Mexico and found out that he is now giving facials. My skin was super dry from the crazy winter weather and was in need of some serious TLC, so I decided to give it a whirl and do the deep clean facial. First he gave me a quick foot bath, before tucking me in and testing my senses with 3 different scents for a relaxing journey. Matt gently whispered each time he was doing something that would potentially startle me or make me uncomfortable, which I appreciated because I hate when you have no idea what is coming next and you jump from a calming mask to a intense extraction session. While my skin was absorbing each of the treatments, he massaged my feet and legs - bonus! After the treatment, my skin immediately looked hydrated and healthy, I was a little red but its to be expected with my uber sensitive skin. For the next 3 days, I was glowing and even received a compliment on how great my face looked! It's not a fancy spa, it's a clean and quiet room in the back of a tanning salon with organic products that will leave your skin feeling like new. You should give it a try. read more

I've been coming here for a few weeks now. The atmosphere is so comfortable and you feel right at home. The place is always clean and the beds are usually ready right when you need them. The pricing is surprisingly fair for both the single sessions and the monthly packages. I walked in expecting to do a single session, and ended up getting a monthly because of how great the deal is. None of the "bullshit" that comes with chain salons goes on here, what you see is what you get. I'm always welcomed with a good attitude and a smile when I walk in, the process is so painless. I cannot recommend this place enough. I even snagged a pack of samples for lotions to try out (wasn't sure which one would be right for me) for only ten bucks. This place is a hidden gem. Halsted Street Beach Tanning Salon was the first place I tried in Chicago, and I continued being a customer until my recent move (if it weren't for the 5000 miles separating us, I'd still be a customer). My current testing of new places reminded me of just how lucky I was in Chicago...to have my first visit turn into regular visits. Soooo lucky. I went to HSBTS for waxing, but I used their spray tanning services twice as well. Matt is AMAZING. I am a wimp when it comes to anything involving even a little bit of pain (I'm talking exercise-level heart rate before appointments!) but Matt not only does such a wonderful job of minimizing the physical discomfort with his expertise, but he also entertains you the whole time to take your mind off of what's going on! Whether it's jokes, movies, or discussions about politics, the chit-chat just makes the whole experience relaxing. Despite the salon's popularity, it still keeps the spirit of a small business--after a couple of visits, you are known and recognized as an individual, not as some number that rolled in there to make you money. Over the years, some employees changed--I wasn't always happy with the receptionists, for example (e.g., someone who asks for your last name to be spelled and then laughs, adding that it's a weird name). Normally, this would be cause to leave and look for another place; however, it's that relationship that Matt develops with his customers that makes even a grouch like me stay. Ownership/management changed just before I left--what I saw in the change was only positive; I hope that it will continue in that direction and take tips from the person who kept the business successfully running for such a long time. Cleanliness: the place is super clean, and all the people I've seen working with customers follow certain hygiene procedures that can pass even at a doctor's office. Prices: I'd heard from friends that I was paying more than they were at other places. But there is NO WAY that they were getting the customer experience that I was--going in certain that the job will be done professionally, that I'm going to get the specific service I asked for (not what they envisioned), and that I'm going to have a nice chat with this sassy dude who makes you feel like you're a buddy, and not a customer. read more

The staff are always super friendly and prompt at assisting you. The red light itself has been something I look forward to every day. It has boosted my circulation, helped diminish the appearance of my acne scars on my face, and most importantly, seems even to aid in the pain of my joints as I have been treating my arthritis *I do not recommend this as a treatment by itself, as I am on a strict diet, however I notice right after treatment my symptoms diminish in severity. I went to this establishment to get a spray tan, and walked out just as pale as I came in. You may be asking yourself, how does that happen? Well, It was raining, which is obviously not conducive for this procedure. After discussing the predicament with the owner, who was very nice in not wanting me to have a ruined spray tan, I was about to reschedule. We were chatting further, and I mentioned that I am going on a tropical vacation soon. The owner then made a comment that I should have been "base tanning" in preparation for the increased sun exposure. When I informed him that I'm not a tanning bed kinda gal given their increased chance of developing skin cancer, he proceeded to vehemently argue with me about the safety of UV tanning for ~5 minutes. I understand he runs a tanning salon for a living, so he is obviously pro-tan. But, regardless of his thoughts on the subject, it is NEVER acceptable to treat a customer in this manner. Clearly, there's never going to be agreement on the safety of tanning between those who engage in said activity and those who don't, but for a business owner to interact with a customer in this way in completely ridiculous. Not only did he yell "you're wrong" at me repetitively, he also proclaimed that I have a vitamin D deficiency and wished skin cancer on me before asking me to leave the premises and not return. Yes that's right- you read that correctly. Needless to say, I will not be returning to this salon. In fact, I hope no one else ever goes there again. read more

long long ago...when i was a tanner, ca. 2004 i visited the Halsted Street Beach, not far from my old place in lakeview...and no this place does not have sand or lake michigan water, but hell yes does it have some hilarious and friendly tanning pros! always red/orange/brown/lobster (to display their frequent usage)...they know their shit ("you'll burn on that bed if you go over 15 minutes" "girl, get that hot chocolate cream, it smells so delicious and won't burn you"). it's a cheeky lil joint on the end-of-the-boys-town strip, the prices are pretty cheap and yes- they have enya, so you can listen to "ornical flow" over and over again while you burn your ass! read more

I went to Halsted Street Beach Tanning based on all of these positive comments. I still believe that you could have a great experience here but if you are like me, I would stay away. I came here a handful of days before a wedding that I was going to be in and wanted to look less pasty and have a nice glow. I am fair and have airbrushed a few times before with great results. The product here is very heavy and dark. They don't have very many options for tan shades. They have dark and very dark. The product felt extra sticky and filmy which led to it getting smudged a lot. I ended up being tanner than I had wanted (not just tan but orange tint). This is definitely a product of what the people who work there think looks good instead of listening to the customer. Although they didn't think I looked orange, my friend who I was with even agreed that this was not a good look. I ended up driving home and showering it off. The guys here are nice and their service was prompt. The facility was pretty run down compared to the other places I have tried since. I personally would suggest going elsewhere for airbrushing since there is no lack of options in Chicago. read more

The saying "you get what you pay for" doesn't apply here, as you get THE BEST spray tan I've found in the city for one the of cheapest prices around! I have three main criteria for spray tans: natural color, even & consistent application (no awkward blotchiness or tiger stripes), and sufficient lasting power. Halsted Street Beach Tanning hits all three on the mark. On top of which, the service is great, and they make the whole process fun & comfortable. Unfortunately I've moved pretty far away, but despite living a block away from another airbrush spray tan provider, I still make the trek here when I can because they're THAT good.
