Hama sushi is/was a staple for decades! Staff and food are great. However, they do allow a homeless man to sit at the bar and enjoy free food and drinks, and as nice as he is, he SMELLS like piss! Twice now I've gone there to enjoy their happy hour. And each time I'm told Esther the owner allows this and tells her staff to allow this! It's unsanitary and gross. He is accommodated more than paying customers. First time I saw him I offered to pay for his meal and drinks if he sat elsewhere. But NOPE! The restaurant priority is not paying customers. It's the comfort of this one homeless man. I get being kind, donating, but can the owners at least require him to shower and be clean?! This used to be my favorite place. But give. What I was told again, today, by the bartender. And what I experienced months ago, and why I was hesitant to come back, this is not a place that cares about its paying customers anymore. Shame. If you want to go here pass on happy hour. Homeless get the priority. read more

I remember when they opened back in the 80's. Had been there a few months ago and decided to go back when I was vacationing in Venice Beach. Nice space. One side is more sports bar and one side is sushi bar and tables. The seared beef carpaccio is one of my favorites. Lots of other good appetizers including the shumi. I had the chefs sashimi selection. Very tasty. I don't remember it being quite as pricey when I was there a few months ago but seems like every where is. Great service staff. read more

The sushi is pretty good here, but the service and prices drop this place an entire star. I left barely full the other night (nibbled on some nigiri and some hand rolls with a friend) and one bottle of (cheap at the liquor store) sake later, our bill was $240!!! Came here on Saturday night around 6:30. Got a table right away. Service was excellent. Unfortunately, the food was not great. The popcorn shrimp tasted like grocery store shrimp (if not worse). Sushi had a bad after taste and the tuna tar tar also did not taste fresh. The tuna tar tar tasted like frozen tuna from the supermarket. Scallop dynamite was oily and had way too much what appeared to be cheese but apparently was not, and not enough scallop. I do appreciate the service but I would never eat here again. read more

STAY AWAY. This is literally the worst sushi I have ever had in all of Los Angeles. Writing a review to warn everyone to not come here. Went here last Friday night for the first time in years. I remember it wasn't mind blowing years ago, but it wasn't this bad. I don't know if I could even be eating at the same places as other reviews. The only thing edible was the edamame and peppers. The sweet shrimp which our waiter recommended was so bad I spit it out. It tasted rotten. The rice was messy on the sushi and the fish chewy and ratios were way off. Miso cod was dry beyond belief and flavorless. Sashimi was stringy and rubbery. Even the Sake was not great and overpriced. I wish I took photos to show how horrifying it was. Nothing looked anything like others that post. I'm feeling ill just thinking about it. There are so many delicious Japanese restaurants in Los Angeles. Hama is so disgusting it should be a criminal offense that they even serve food here. For 280 dollars we could have had a pretty nice meal at a fantastic restaurant. Please avoid for your own sake and support Japanese restaurants that actually care about the cuisine!!!! read more

Nothing special. Service just simply lacks. Not sure what they are smoking. As we set down asked for shishito peppers, hot teal. Didn't get either till the second Sake jar we've ordered. They tried to bill for few things we ordered but never got. Scallops in the hand rolls smelled, didn't have a chance to taste. The waitress tried to charge that too. Finally ordered this for the first time two nights ago and it was delightful ! I had a spicy tuna handroll that was perfectly portioned and miso soup. My friend had the Salmon Sashimi. The flavoring was great and the fish was really fresh. I had to knock off a star for the vegetable gyoza, it wasn't a show stopper. So, just stick to the sushi and you'll be happy! No priority for our order or anything to make the wait bearable, after they had canceled our initial order. They are understaffed and totally disorganized. Unfortunately for us, this restaurant seems to have shifted the priority from in-house dining guests to getting as many takeaway orders out as quickly as possible. Tow-tops along the window are now a takeaway station where orders are bagged and picked up. We were seated at the sushi bar, but my view couldn't even see the chef because of a stack of plastic to-go containers. We moved ourselves to middle seats at the sushi bar. Our waitress did not enter our appetizer of tempura, nor did she refill our drinks. When we needed the bill, she couldn't be found, yet she was quick to grab and return my boyfriend's credit card. It was a disappointing visit because staff wouldn't pay us any mind, yet their presence was always known since they were rushing past the tables to get the takeaway other orders out. I'm typically reluctant to leave subpar reviews unless it's warranted. To start, the food (both the cooked and raw) here at Hama Sushi are good. That said, what good is the food if you do not receive the order you had originally placed? Mistakes happen but when it seemingly becomes a norm I will move on. I had placed an order via Uber Eats last week for some teriyaki, udon and 3 different sashimis. A ~$120 order. I ended up receiving the teriyaki's and the udon. None of the expensive sashimi items in the order arrived. Fast forward to today with another order. One of the dessert item I had placed did not arrive. Yes, I got reimbursed for the missing items. But it would be nice to actually receive the items I had ordered. Sometimes, surprises with food delivery is not a good thing. I'll be moving on to another local place for sushi. read more

Both the service and food need work. The food was average at best, I could've paid less somewhere else for the same quality. I had ordered some rolls and an appetizer, the app had gone out to our table after our entrees and wasn't what I ordered. It took longer than it should have to get it corrected. I came here for dinner on a Wednesday night. I ordered the edamame, teriyaki salmon, and also a dragon roll. Overall, the food was okay. The edamame was exactly as expected. The salmon in the salmon teriyaki was well cooked and tasty. Interestingly, the dish came with mashed potatoes. The carbs seemed unnecessary since it already came with rice. The dragon roll was decent tasting but also very heavy. Granted dragon rolls are generally pretty heavy, but this was especially so. The service was alright and the ambiance was ok; the place had a reasonable amount of patrons for a Wednesday night which is always a good thing. Unfortunately, I thought that the prices were very high for the food and experience I got. I'm not sure if I'd come back when I visit LA again. read more

This place was delicious. It was my first time going here, and I will definitely be returning. The service was great, and they were able to accommodate a party of two within just a few minutes of arriving. The atmosphere was really nice and it was walking distance to the beach. They have a few items on their menu labeled as gluten free but are also able to modify items that aren't labeled as gluten free. I got the cucumber roll which was delicious. This used to be my favorite sushi spot, but I am sad to say I will never go here again. The prices have gone up and the quality of some of the fish was not the same. Aside from the many changes (no more late nights, no more HH) the service was the worst I have ever experienced. Our server never greeted us until about 25 min later, and then had an attitude with us because almost everything we ordered came out wrong. Our bill was at least $150 and I have never had a server be so rude towards me that it completely ruined our dining experience. I live in Venice, about two blocks from Hama, they celebrated 25 years last year and it's no surprise. The staff is always kind, attentive and the vibe is always lovely. We went there last night. The food was very fresh and delicious. The prices a bit high BUT they have big portions which makes it very reasonable. I took down 1 start because of the service. When we came (with reservation) hostess said take any table. Well, all empty tables were dirty and still had staff on it. I told waitress, she said go to the hostess, I expected that I already went. They finally sent someone to clean the table for us (this is during Corona). Then waitress took our credit card before we placed an order. It would be fine that they take cards, since tables are outside but they didn't take cards from everyone. We waited another 10-15 min to place an order. We came on a windy and rainy day, so when we sat on the "outdoor" covered area, the wind and rain was beating down hard. But if I had come in on a sunny day, sitting there would've been cool. The one unique item that caught my eye was the strawberry roll. The normal ingredients of shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado, and snow crab is topped off with strawberries. Me being a person who has no issues mixing two distinct flavors together (ice cream with fries, graham crackers with ranch) found this roll really yummy! I can imagine it get's pretty crowded on the weekend but during our tuesday night visit the vibe was laid back and the service was quick and attentive. I really liked the atmosphere and layout. First off, I have to say the garlic butter edamame was amazing! Probably the best edamame I've ever had, and certainly the first time I've tried a break away from the classic "salt" variety. Our largish group tried many of the speciality rolls, and there were several highlights for me. The sashimi sampler provided some great bites of clearly fresh and perfectly temp'd fish. A delicious way to start the meal. TAKE NOTE: the "Red Devil" roll on the menu is the only roll with a "VERY VERY SPICY" warning. There is a reason. It is fucking hot. Watch out. The Shiso Lemon Roll provided a pleasant kick to the palette and really stuck out amongst the more savory options. I loved Kennys Lobster Roll. It was wonderfully decadent and had a great amount of meat. And speaking of meat, everyone loved the Surf & Turf roll which may sound a little weird with filet mignon but it was perfect. This place is the whole package! It has good sushi, great vibes, and awesome service! I came here on a Friday night around 8pm and we were able to be seated right away. As soon as we were seated within 10 minutes the whole restaurant was packed! We started off with ordering a large Sapporo to share along with an order of edamame. We decided to share our sushi so we both ordered different things to share. I got a California roll and the shrimp tempura. My friend got a Philadelphia roll. (I know were so basic!) Everything was really really good!!! The Philadelphia roll had the salmon on top which I never have had before and I still really liked it! We had a great experience here and next time I'm in Venice I will be back! read more
