We ordered rolls that were fairly good tasting. My daughter just wanted a bowl of plain rice. She nearly threw up. I tasted it and it was vile. We asked the server if it was plain rice. She said, "Yes, it's plain rice in vinegar." About 15 minutes later, she came back with another bowl of rice. I said, "Thanks for getting plain rice." She responded, "We don't have plain rice. This is rice with vinegar." Forgetting the rice story, I won't go back even though I like supporting kosher restaurants. However, not one staff person said hi or smiled the entire time. Walked in with my wife to try this new place by our home. We were excited because we love sushi and there's not much close by. We opened the door and saw a very cozy place with a good amount of people dining. There was no greeting when we walked in and no host to seat or greet us. The waitress saw us and instead of saying hello and asking if we'd like a seat, she walked passed us and grabbed a reserved sign from the counter and put it by the one open table in the place. The two stars given justifies the flavor of the specialty roll my boyfriend and I ordered. We would give zero stars for customer service. It took 30 minutes for us to get the 3 rolls we ordered. We would understand that if the place was busy but there were 4 other customers there at the time. We would have ordered more but it took too long the first time so we left hungry. Kosher Sushi?!?! What's that about? Pretty much means that you aren't going to get "real" shrimp nor crab... They do have the "substitutes" and I honestly DO NOT get imitation crab nor shrimp... Just as I, for sure, do not get Turkey Bacon (and I know pork ain't Kosher either). Trust me, the imitation stuff DOES NOT taste ANYTHING like nor has the mouth feel of the original... And what the substitute protein has to go through, to resemble the faked product... I wouldn't bother with having the substitute/ imitation. That being said... I appreciate the effort that this place puts forth and I hope for this place to do well. Came in when it was fairly new and had their Miso Soup (very good) and the Hama Tuna Tower. Good sized portion of tuna paired up with mango, avocado... A bit of spice but nothing that overwhelmed the tuna. It was really good. Staff is very nice and chatty. Figured me for being "not of the tribe" and were asking "why did you decide to come in" and "welcome" and discussed a bit of Kosher law. Great varied selection of creative rolls. I liked that each roll was cut into 10 very reasonable pieces - felt like a good value and like we got to eat more food. Its a small space, but doesnt feel loud even if most tables are occupied. Decent sushi spot in West Rogers Park but to be honest, it's really the only option if you keep kosher and all things considered it's solid. I'm not a huge sushi fan but I usually order out once a week and their sushi is consistently solid, which can't be said of all places. The prices are fairly reasonable. The presentation is excellent. The sushi is good, not great - Shallots has better sushi (better rice and fish tastes more fresh), but Shallots is much more expensive, making Hamachi a more attractive option if you're just in the mood for sushi. The menu is a bit overwhelming, and the waitstaff has generally only been able to recommend the "blue man group sushi," which wasn't very tasty. My biggest problem is dining in: there is no entryway or double-door, so each time the door opens, the restaurant gets extremely cold in the Chicago winters. This makes the food cold-- sushi should be eaten at room temperature (or, if ordered tempura, it should be a little warm). There is already very limited seating, and Hamachi has 3-4 tables right next to the door -- each time I've been in the restaurant, people have been wearing coats. They need to fix this problem or else people will not want to eat there during the winter months. Also did not like the "crunchy shrimp" appetizer -- because it's a Kosher restaurant, all the "shrimp" and "crab" is made out of the same stuff (a white fish or cod substitute). It's clear that Hamachi buys the same store-bought version of this that is served in sushi sold by Hungarian Kosher and Kosher Jewel -- I'd expect a higher quality from a sushi restaurant. Hamachi shouldn't just deep fry these store-bought non-Kosher-fish-substitutes. They should either make their own, or take this off the menu. Unfortunately, my review is not good. In order to be fair I waited for my third visit to review. We are quite disappointed. Mainly with the service, but also with the food. To make it short I will focus on the service. We sat down to dine, a family of 4 adults. After 35 minutes of waiting, 2 of us were finally served our food. 20 minutes later (55 total) the other two were finally served. Of course this was way after the first 2 had finished their meals. I guess it wasn't the family dinner that we were looking forward to. Not to mention that one of the meals served after 55 minutes was not what we ordered :-( After several visits, I feel that the restaurant is lacking a kitchen manager that knows how to speed things up and get the workers moving. It seems like they are way too laid back in the kitchen and don't realize that people are waiting. On the positive side, their is a lovely young lady that has been our waitress for all 3 visits. She is a wonderful & hard working lady, and she definitely try's her best! If I ever hear that things improved significantly, we would be glad to give it another shot. read more

For Kosher in Chicago this place is yum. When it first opened I didn't like the rice and only ate the sashimi platter but since then they have perfected it. The Hama Tuna tower is filling and always fresh and it's the only place around that you can get seaweed salad and it's actually very good. I've never had the cooked food besides the fries with my son so I can't comment on that but it's a quaint place to go out with a few friends for an afternoon lunch or a nite bite. There's not gonna be crab or shrimp, or whatever else other sushi spots offer. I like most of their items, very unique combonations and great for other food like their bento boxes. For starters, this place is very small. I wish they had a larger dining room (they can probably seat about 18 at tables, another 6-8 at the bar), and they place can get very cold in the winter (no double door to the outside). That said, the menu is phenomenal. There is an overwhelming list of choices, and some are very creative. I have been to the restaurant about a half dozen times, and gotten takeout another dozen or so. I have never had a bad bite of sushi. I have read complaints about the occasional fishiness and undercooked rice, but I guess I have been lucky! I really hope this place lasts, as we really need some good kosher sushi in Chicago. read more

Great sushi!! The place is very cute. Theres a huge selection of different types of sushi or you can customize your own sushi.

I will start with an explanation of my three star rating. The food used to be good, so I'm assuming that it still is. I don't know for sure, because I didn't actually eat anything there this time out. Our family eats out A LOT. We haven't been to Hamachi in a few months because some of us were on a very restricted diet, but now we know what works for us (gluten free) and we had a family occasion to celebrate, and the guest of honor chose Hamachi. We were all excited because we used to frequent it, and GF shouldn't be an issue with sushi, right? Wrong. We sat there, asked about the new menu, spoke to the waitress, who was very helpful, BTW. Every option that we asked about was not okay for GF, even if we took out the noodles and the tempura. Why not, you may ask, as we did. The sauces! All of their sauces, save two contain gluten. Why does green goddess or mayonnaise need to contain gluten? C'mon Hamachi, we used to drop at least $120 twice a month, and as kosher keeping consumers there are limited options for eat in sushi. We felt that we had no option but to leave without eating. Also, as an aside to the owner/management, it borders on insulting to have less than 10 items on the menu of over 200 things be marked as GF. Why even bother? I am aware that as someone that is eating GF, our choices are limited. I just didn't think that it would be so limited at a sushi place. read more
