First time here and it is elevated local food without being too expensive. I got the Tonkatsu sandwich which had good flavor (sauce) and two thin pieces of katsu which were crunchy. The katsu was a little over cooked so it was a bit dry. A generous portion of fries came with the sandwich and they were great; nice crunchy crinkle cut fries. I did takeout so can't say much about service. Parking is tight, but there was a person in the parking lot directing people were to park. I'm interested in going back trying their other sandwiches and plates like the Kimchi Reuben. read more

This place is a bit different than expected. But honestly, in a very good way. Their Hamburger Steak katsu style was the best hamburger steak I've ever had anywhere! Great service! Very fast paced! Their wafu hamburger steak very moist, loving the ponzu grated radish! Their Mac salad, is the best I've tasted almost everywhere! Ahi Katsu is moist and great too! The drizzled sauce, I wanna believe tastes like a jalapeño like based. Really complimented well with the ahi. Over all I'm liking this place, nice atmosphere, perfect for if you like eating alone! Never heard of this place till it was suggested to celebrate a friends birthday lunch.. Located directly across Kiyos Transmission shop on queen street..its kind of recessed and not close to the street. My friend tells me it used to be (Eggheads) dunno never been there ok anyways the insides is airconditioned with wooden tables and chairs....the place has a very laid back relaxing appeal (pic). The staff was dilligent and efficient (too busy to tell if they were friendly) and I am sure very pleasant. The menu is not big or too small.. (shucks took a pic but dont know what happened lost it :(...I am sure its on yelp ;) I had the "Wafu hamburger steak (pic) I cant really recall what exactly it consisted of but it was good!! I came to Hamada General Store to try the Kimchi Reuben - I love Kimchi and I love Reubens but I never thought to put them together! It was a delicious creation and served over a bed of french fries. Looking for a local plate? Hamada's is the ISH!! I mean the best!! I'm a first timer. I tried their Ahi Katsu! It was nothing short of awesome! Nice batter not too dry and the fish was nice a flavorful. The plate was garnished with rice and a side of Mac salad. All of which were very delicious. My coworker got the kimchee Ruben and he couldn't even stop to take a breath it was so delicious, he devoured it. My other coworker got the fish and chips. She said it was very filling and somewhat too fluffy.. maybe too much batter? As for parking they had more than a few open stall available and this was around 1:45pm. The menu is very limited with only about 10 items and the menu is take out only. I initially wanted to try the salmon skin salad but it wasn't on the menu. Apparently the menu changes daily or weekly; I'm not sure. We ordered the braised beef loco moco and the salmon katsu. It was very tasty but nothing special that I haven't tasted before. First time coming to hamada g.s. When i go to a new eatery, i order a lico moco if they have it on menu. The way a place makes the brown gravy and eggs says alot abiut their food. And hamada does not disappoint, gravy was flavorful. Over easy eggs was cook to perfection. Braised ribs was pull apart with a pkastic fork. I made in time for the specials! The herb crusted roast beef and the country fried pork loin were for my grandparents. I had to taste test and make sure it was yummy. Oh my it was. I ventured here for the first time and I was not disappointed. The portion was easily 2 meals, making a $16 plate a pretty good deal. Unfortunately I ordered take-out so the ahi katsu wasn't as crispy as it would've been if I dined in, but the flavors were great and they put a spin on a classic dish with the addition of bonito flakes, a spicy sriracha sauce, pickled veggies and an untraditional Mac salad. We tried this place for the first time. I had the ribeye teri beef plate and wifey had the 4x2 breakfast plate. Both plates were loaded, they let you choose how you want the steak prepared. I got mine medium rare. Steak was tender but could have had more teriyaki flavor. Plates came out quickly. I didn't see any tables for customers to eat at so I think it's all carry out. Staff was friendly and courteous. Seems that this was originally a market back in the day. There is historical info about it in the restaurant. They also sell local branded clothing, snacks and accessories like HI life. Parking is limited to about 8-10 labeled stalls. I would go back to try other items on the menu. read more

TBH - I drove past it a couple of times before I found it. Looks like a lot of parking right in front except only some of the stalls are for the restaurant. The restaurant is clean and has a/c. The girl working the counter was really nice. Tonkatsu sandwich is delish! The bun was soft and yummy. It had a small kine kick because of the mustard. I would definitely order it again! Took away one star because not a fan their fries. They give a lot of fries and some people might like that type but it's not for me. read more

We got 3 dishes: Kimchi Reuben, Tonkatsu sandwich, and Katsu Curry Moco. And we couldn't decide which was the best. The Kimchi Reuben was a perfect blend of the saltiness of the pastrami and the tartness of the kimchi. The Tonkatsu sandwich was very nicely breaded and crisp with the tender pork too. The Katsu Curry Moco once again had a perfectly cooked tonkatsu and very yummy curry. All 3 foods we got were so good that we couldn't pick a favorite. During COVID its takeout only, so we got the food and ate it right away in the car. Overall, I definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting oahu, and we will definitely be coming back. This was our first time visiting Hamada General Store, but it definitely won't be the last. We had somewhat of a hard time locating the building since it's in an industrial type of area. There is a parking lot available in front. We ordered the Braised Beef Loco Moco, Tofu & Watercress Salad, and Plantation Iced Tea. The Braised Beef Loco Moco was delicious. It didn't feel too heavy or taste super salty. We really enjoyed this dish. The Tofu & Watercress Salad was light which is why we ordered it, but we found that there wasn't much watercress in it. So we came here primarily for the steak poke plate and unfortunately we learned that it was only served on Tuesday's. However, we were extremely fortunate as the chef was able to make an exception for us that day and we were able to order it. It was amazing!! The steak and flavor is incredible and just blends well really. For $23, the plate is huge and I was able to share it with my wife. Would highly recommend this place. My wife went in to pick up the food, so I can't/won't be reviewing the overall place inside, but I'll just do the food part. FOOD: Ordered the Ahi Katsu plate. From the menu "Panko Breaded Locally Caught Ahi, Kabayaki, Sriracha Mayo, Katsuobushi, Furikake, Tsukemono, Green Onion" The size of the Ahi Katsu was fairly decent, it sits on a layer of rice (a lot of rice) next to a scoop of mac salad (which was ok - just didn't wow me enough) and that red daikon/radish was alright. Overall it's good.. not bad, only thing I would say is that it's not really worth the price of it. That taste was there.. again I've had better ahi katsu elsewhere and for decent price. Food is really, really good. Big portions, I went with my kids (ages 10,11,13) and should've made them share. Instead of getting them each their own plate. It would've definitely been enough food. Went to try out the Hamada General Store today and we ordered Sweet Chili Salmon Katsu with rice and toss. The was our first time here and didn't know what to expect. When we got our food it smelled heavenly and we couldn't wait till we got home to dig in. For my husband and I we were good with sharing one plate, their servings are pretty good. We also bought Tiara's No Ka Oi butter flake cookies! Those were my favorite and will definitely be back for more! The plus side of this restaurant is that they have a parking lot for their customers but the downside is they don't have a place to sit and eat. I got the katsu curry moco and it was super ono. It was a good size portion; I ate half and had to save the other for later. If you get it, make sure you're ready for a possible kanak attack. I've heard good things about this restaurant for a while. I think there used to be a Hamada General Store that was pretty prolific in post-war Honolulu. I ate here a day or two before leaving for the mainland on the way back from accompanying my dogs to the vet. The place was packed--there was a line of cars trying to get in to the parking lot and the inside of the store was crowded enough that I wasn't sure where the line for ordering and where the line to pick up food was. I never really figured out where to wait for my order so watch out for that. The menu is a lot of different upscale versions of plate lunch food, and I had trouble deciding on one thing to get, but went with the wagyu hamburger steak. It's certainly more expensive than typical plate lunch, but it tasted a step above, even though in the picture it's all huli-ed. The hamburger is very soft and flavorful, and almost fluffy. It comes with crispy onion rings, brown gravy, and a ponzu-oroshi type thing, as well as takuan and mac salad which, as you can read in the other reviews, is fantastic. I liked mixing up the onion rings, oroshi, hamburger and rice and eating it together, it was a delicious mix of tangy, crunchy, savory, and sweet. Plate lunch is a very portable option, and I'm sure it's making something of a resurgent now that everyone's in quarantine. I have to try some of their other dishes sometime soon. read more
