My partner and I moved to Hamden almost 5 years ago and this place is our "Old Reliable". Meaning, when we don't know what we want (or can't agree), or feel shelling out the $$ for a pricier restaurant, we come here because we know we won't be disappointed. And we haven't been. It's a diner (formerly a HoJos) and it's diner food and diner service (sometimes really nice, but at worst brisk, never rude). But they get it right every time. Huge portions, extremely fast service and never a shock when the check comes. Breakfasts are great, even their Italian dishes (Chicken Parm, for example) are really good because their sauce tastes like it was made by a nice old Italian lady. And NOTHING beats their Cheeseburger Triple Decker Club. NOTHING! Served with a huge pile of fries and really good coleslaw. If I were ever to decide on my last meal, this would be somewhere on the list! Now .. another thing. This is Hamden. Very heavy on the Jewish and Italian (like me). One crowd this place gets ALOT of, like most diners, is the old folks. This means picky, rude, cheap people. And the staff here are pro's at handling these folks and taking their treatment in stride. Just last night, some old bat sitting right behind us ordered the steak and -Stuffed- Shrimp. The food came and the old lady complained that the stuffing was covering the shrimp. WTF?? She made the server take it back to have the stuffing put on another plate and the shrimp "freshened up" so she could eat them separately! I am SERIOUS! The server just said nicely "Sure, Ma'am....", scooped up the plate and took care of it. Me? I'd have thrown it at her (i was a really bad waiter). And Rose and Leon (that's what I named them) probably left the server a meager $2.00 tip. This place is terrific ..i definitely recommend it for when you're really hungry and only some good diner grub will do! read more

They recently renovated the space and it looks much better than how it did. Sadly, they didn't think to renovate the customer service. I'm not sure if it's a bit ageist but it seems the older you are the faster the service is. Irregardless, the food is okay for the money. I typically order breakfast foods, so I can't comment on the regular menu. I got two scrambled eggs, home fries, and toast. Everyone at the table ordered similarly and had a similar experience. My eggs were dry on top and wet in the middle, my toast was certainly stale before they toasted it, and my home fries were boiled potatoes thrown on the cook top for all but a minute. It was a disappointing experience, and I've had slightly better before, but all of that paired with our less than stellar service made this particular visit a lackluster one. I wouldn't say no to go back with my coworkers, but I think I'll keep trying different things on the menu in hopes of finding a winner. Though my expectation for better service is low. read more

We stopped here for lunch after search revealed it was an easy on /off from the Merritt Parkway. It was so easy it was more like a rest stop them off. Classic diner food with the classic large menu choices for everyone. We had an hot open turkey sandwich, hot open roast beef sandwich and a London broil sandwich. My family and I love this place. They always are consistant and the staff is friendly. I have been here numerous times for breakfast and dinner, and they are always good. The portions are very big for the price, which is fair. I enjoy this place even thought the "decor" is not much to look at (very throwback 1970's in there) but it is just because they have not updated the place. If you stay at the hotel that is in the same parking lot (Clarion Hotel) you should make it a point to stop in here. Love this place :) read more

This diner is fantastic. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, and the owners are great, their food prep is prompt and it is very clean and comfortable. The food is good, it is typical diner food on many accounts, but it is one of my all time favorite diners in the New Haven area. They have the best chocolate cream pie, tapioca and rice pudding that I have had in any area diner. I just tried this diner and I liked it. The service was great except for 1 thing I will mention later. I ordered the texas style french toast and it was very tasty. The prices are reasonable and the coffee is very smooth. I really like the ambience, the feel, the decor etc. I am a fan and will definitely be returning. To the manager: I was a little disappointed by your lack of respect for your amazing waitress break/lunch time. I should not have had to interrupt her meal time to split a check into 3. I completely understand it was a little busy but this was really disrespectful to make my friends and I interrupt this nice waitress meal to recalculate our bill which you could have easily done. Your workers are so important and wish we could have given her more respect, together you as her boss and me as the customer. I will definitely ask to split the bill from the beginning in the future. We came by for breakfast on a weekend, it was crowded but not full. I got pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausages, and home fries (the 2+2+2). The home fries were very good, the eggs were okay, and the others were in the middle. The food also came very quickly despite the number of people, which was nice. It's indeed right off the parkway. You're basically eating at the Clarion. Service was solid. Coffee is terrible (I think it's the hotel coffee.) It is not classic diner decor - again, it feels like you're in a hotel lobby. We got grilled cheese, fries and onion rings. Onion rings were okay, although for some reason they were sweet onions which is odd and not my favorite. The cole slaw was also way too sweet. My partner asked for cheddar cheese on his sandwich and was served a mix of American and the bright-orange that passes for Cheddar in some regions. Next time, if there is one, he'll try Swiss. Really bad experience here with my friend. They forgot about our order in the kitchen and when it eventually came out part of it was wrong. The other part was just chalk tasting and i didn't eat it and they said they coudent give me a refund because my omelet was to big..... it was a 3 egg omelet. I got a basic egg sandwich on toast. It was a one egg sandwich with Canadian bacon. The sandwich came with two thick slices of bacon. The coffee was good and the service was very quick. Been here many times but will not be back...as stated in other reviews, waitstaff can be sweet a tea or rude as roadkill. Recently, I came in and ordered a burger and fries. Grumpy, miserable waitress (Jen) placed my plate in front of me and other plates for friends. Then I asked for a few extra napkins and Jen responded by acting like I just asked to her to name her first born child born after me. She huffed and puffed before coming back and literally slamming a pile of napkins in the middle of the table. Ironies of all ironies, instead of doing her much needed side work or checking on our table or like cleaning the vacant tables, we could hear her complaining to another waitress about how her peers make more tips than her! Town House is our "go to" place. My son and I have been coming here for years so we're treated like regulars but the staff is always personable to everyone. The food is always good, whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner, we're never disappointed. Personally, I'm a fan of their breakfast but some of their dinner offerings, like the chicken kabobs or the broiled salmon are always excellent. the soups are homemade. Their split pea soup is THE BEST, bar none! In reading some of the negative reviews, I can't help but wonder what side of the bed these diners woke up on. Towne House is a friendly place with great diner fare. With the recent renovations, it's now a home run! Additionally, they are incredible community members. We got a take out order from this diner tonight and sadly I have to say it was really horrible. First of all if you order something that you specify to please be gluten free, it should not be served on 2 pieces of white bread, that is honestly just common sense. The burger we ordered was on the soggiest roll I have ever seen or eaten, literally inedible. The wrap we ordered was also terrible, it was a wet mess and the 'stuff' inside was tasteless not to mention there was way too much in the wrap that we couldn't even pick it up.
