My mom, sister, and I came to eat brunch at this restaurant after a particularly stressful morning on Saturday, to say the least. We picked it because it was close and we had gone here for my sisters college graduation dinner/ after party event and it was pretty good. TIP: they don't have hard liquor. I was ~craving~ a bloody Mary and was very disappointed that they didn't have it. Anyway. The muffins were literally the BEST part of the place. It was weird, maybe the server was just having an off day, but she seriously kept cutting all of us off when we spoke. So that was honestly a turn off. Second, I got the breakfast brunch bowl. The ssusage was INCREDIBLY salty. Combine that with the gravy and the potatoes, it was very heavy and hard to eat bc of the salt (and I love salt). The sangria was good for what it was. The fruit was delicious and the white wine didn't give me a headache. I'd go again to try something different, for sure! read more

We have been looking for an affordable, delicious and easy like a Sunday morning and don't feel like cooking restaurant. They give popovers and great cornbread muffins to start. My wife ordered the 3 course meal for $40, starting with friend green tomatoes, steak and chocolate dessert- all solid. I had the shrimp Greek salad and loved it. Better than PJ Skidoos and quieter with outdoor seating as well. I think we finally found a "go to" place and look forward to coming back. My husband and I have been to Hamrock's numerous times in the past, but last night's dinner was a true disappointment. We were attracted to their Restaurant Week menu as it offered several promising dishes that we were anxious to try. The service did not meet the standards that we have experienced previously, and it was obvious that the kitchen and staff were overwhelmed. My white gazpacho soup appetizer was delicious, nicely presented and served promptly. My husband and I waited over an hour for the main course. I ordered one of the Restaurant Week offerings, veal stuffed with mozzarella cheese and coated with panko bread crumbs. There were two small portions of veal and barely any mozzarella cheese; the panko bread crumbs overwhelmed the veal and were the dominant flavor. The ice cream-based desserts were not available due to the freezer breaking down (clearly not Hamrock's fault). The key lime pie had only a faint taste of lime and was disappointing end to the meal. My husband enjoyed his lobster bisque, lamb and shrimp, and chocolate ganache cake, but said it wasn't up to Hamrock's usual standards. They did offer us complimentary decaf coffee with our dessert and apologized for the long wait. I am hoping that last night's experience was just a fluke and not a decline in the quality of the food and prompt service for which Hamrock's is known. read more

I have been to this restaurant before however this time I was a bit disappointed as they didn't have various items on the menu. I know is Monday, but still I didn't came here to pay for overprice fry chicken. No scallops and no duck. Also they didn't have a few desserts. I end up trying a vegetarian dish, Morocan chick peas It was good but I wasn't impress. I did try a bite of my daughters salmon and it was tasty. The pumpkin dessert was to die for. This location is extremely quiet and would be great for date night or special occasion. The service was great and everything was prepared and delivered to us in a timely manner. I came here for a small wedding reception in January 2021 (during COVID) and was really pleased with the overall experience, service, and food. For larger groups, service tends to suffer at restaurants. But that was not the case here. I was never left without water or an empty glass of wine. The overall flow of the multi-course meal was excellent. They timed everything well so that slow eaters were not left behind on previous courses. The food itself was good, though not exceptional. We had a few passed appetizers on arrival. One was a grilled vegetable torte, which was good and vegetarian friendly, but I would not order it again if given the choice. The second was a steak crostini, which was fantastic. The steak was tender and easy to bite into, which can be sometimes rare to come across. The steak appetizer was the best thing I had all night. The meal starts with a basket of bread, which was pretty good. There were two types. One was a poppy seed cornbread (if I had to guess) and the other was like a cross between a bun and Yorkshire pudding. The Caesar salad was miss-able and I ended up not finishing it. For my entrée I ordered the grilled salmon and really enjoyed it. I asked for it medium-rare and it came out very well cooked. However, the rice it came with was pretty bland and unexciting. I don't want to dump on this place because the food is so good they deserve leeway, but I took my wife there for Valentine's day and our waitress acts like giving us time to look over the menu is to our benefit, but we were ready. It took considerably longer than it should have to order drinks and place our order. We would've stayed for another drink, but we were never offered. There were 2 hostesses that didn't seem to be doing anything and a lady came in with a water pitcher offering that frequently, so I'm not sure why they couldn't expand their responsibilities or pass word to the waitress, it just never came to be. read more

Wow...my wife and I had a lazy Saturday recently, so we sallied forth during the evening to give a new restaurant a try, having settled on Hamrock's as our venue of choice. I am probably biased in favor of Hamrock's on account of their attention to excellent gluten-free food. My wife is gluten-free, so we are partial to restaurants that take notice. I must say, their options for gluten-free just outclass most any other restaurant in the immediate area. We opted for some shrimp and crab combinations which just melted into a symphony of harmonious flavors in the mouth. The service was a little slammed with a party that night, but they did a very good job of attending to us all the same. Moreover, the venue is just beautiful. The inside is reminiscent of an older house (because it is one), and they have a lovely outdoor area with Edison lights and foliage. We're deeming this our secret favorite of Fairfax. Hamrock's, you have instantly won us over, and we'll be back with friends and family. :) read more

We came here for restaurant week and the food was yummy! We each had an appetizer, entree, and dessert for $35 each. When we first pulled up, we made a joke and said "oh we're eating inside a house tonight." When we entered, it was exactly like a house. It gave you the warm homey feeling. I'm a picky eater and I should've asked or told the waitress ahead of time. I didn't like that the sauces or sides touched. The shrimp fritter cakes was delicious. It came with a lemon dill aioli. I'm not a fan of the sauce, but the cake itself was good. Definitely a lot of shrimp inside. The puff pastry was good too! They gave lots of duck meat. For the pork tenderloin I thought it was just ok. Nothing special about it. Little bit dry, but there's gravy to help. My partner told me the mahi mahi was so good. The desserts are locally made! The chocolate cake was so delicious!! I just wished it didn't touch the raspberry/strawberry sauce because it gave a bitter taste. The only downside to our time was our waitress. I had a great experience at this restaurant. We were a party of 8 so we were in a back room away from the main dining area. That was great for us because we are a pretty lively bunch, lol. The service was great, even with our large party. No long waits for anything and our server was very personable and lovely. Now, the food: everything was delicious! Starting with the bread, which was this flaky puffy bread and these mini corn muffins. We devoured them all before I could remember to take a picture. Oh, and the butter was amazing. It was like this perfect blend of honey butter. All 8 of us got a variation of the Restaurant Week menu. We had the lobster bisque and fried green tomatoes. The lobster bisque was perfectly seasoned and just the right consistency. The fried green tomatoes also received thumbs up from those who got it. For entrees, I had the crab and lobster ravioli and it was delectable! Whatever is in that sauce needs to be bottled and sold because I would definitely buy it. Other entrees selected were the grilled tenderloin porkchop and the braised shortribs and pasta. Everyone said their meal was tasty and there were no complaints. For dessert, we all either got the chocolate cake or the lemoncello cake. Again, no complaints there. Those who had the lemoncello cake loved it. I was full so I only tasted a bite of the chocolate cake and boxed it to go. Unfortunately, I forgot it on the table so I never got to eat. I was soooo disappointed because that single bite that I did have tasted like heaven and everyone else who ate it kept talking about how good it was. So, definitely get the chocolate cake and do not forget it on the table! This is definitely a great spot to visit. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and plan to go back to try more items on the menu. Nice bread basket. Was the dressing as good as mine - no, but it was a very nice meal, the turkey moist, fresh mashed potatoes, pumpkin cheesecake (other choices pumpkin pie or homemade ice cream). The service was very good. It is a charming restaurant in an old home in the center of Fairfax City. They don't serve hard liquor (go to their other restaurant - Kelly's Oyster House in Fairfax City for a real bar. We were very happy with the experience. I almost gave it a five. read more

I wanted a delicious and classy place for a 25th anniversary dinner and Hamrocks was recommended. I scored a Saturday night reservation and annotated on the reservation it was an anniversary. We arrived a bit early but they were able to accommodate. The prix fixe menu had several appealing options and $35 for 3 courses (for each person) was a nice price for an elegant meal. My swordfish was meaty and cooked well, could have used a bit more seasoning but the potatoes, pineapple salsa and asparagus made a satisfying and tasty meal. Hubby got the crab cakes which he enjoyed. Our waitress surprised us with 2 lovely flutes of champagne - and a 3rd so she could toast with us - which was very sweet. My flourless chocolate cake was amazing, one of the better restaurant desserts I've had in a while. The old house this restaurant is in made for an interesting layout. We were rather close to the table next to us and in a very busy part of the restaurant. But it was not too loud and it made for good people watching. I was struck by the kindness, collaboration and teamwork of the wait staff; where we were, very near the kitchen, I saw plenty of handoffs of food, wait staff helping each other; there seemed to be a genuine appreciation for each other that was enjoyable to see. Parking can be tight but we lucked out on a Thursday evening. Setting is cozy, was warm inside on a rainy, winter night. Ambiance. Greeted by hostess with a friendly smile. Table comfortably accommodated seven of us. There was a woman who took our orders, she called herself the "gluten-free guard dog" (love that) ...anyway, she was incredibly accommodating and friendly. She made connections with us throughout our entire meal, NOT in a superficial way either. I wish I knew her name to give her the recognition. Also staff gave a friendly goodbye when we left. This was a sit-down, slow-down and enjoy-your-time-together atmosphere. Food quality was heart-warming, homemade, like the chef of one's family cooked it. Not like a chain. Crab cake appetizer is GF and worth ordering. I don't know what other reviews were whining about--I have impeccable taste and expectations but I'm not a food snob and this place has my thumbs up. Maybe other reviewers caught them on a bad day, etc. GF fried chicken breast was JUICY, 10/10. Mashed potatoes and carrots perfectly cooked. GF gravy option was nice for a change. Came here for Sunday morning brunch and they have a nice southern wrap around porch. The weather was nice (they had an outdoor clock that measured the humidity and temperature) so we sat outdoors and they have several ceiling fans that give off a nice breeze. The outdoor vibe is very nice you are surrounded by trees and hanging ferns and they use real table clothes. Service was prompt we were immediately seated by the hostess, but then we had to wait 10 minutes for the waiter. I wanted a nice strong latte but they couldn't make it so I had to opt for regular coffee. That was a bit of a bummer that they are a brunch place without specialty coffee. They were out of steak and this seems to be the norm they are always out of a least one or two items on the menu. Mind you restaurant had just opened and they were already out if items. I ordered brunch platter which is alot of food for under $13. Price wise it's very reasonable and I liked the free bread they brought out. They had popovers and blueberry muffins. Pop overs were freshly made with a bit of powered sugar and honestly this was the best food item they had. I was a bit disappointed with the actual brunch. You could pick between French toast and pancakes and bacon or sausage. French toast was soggy and while the flavor was good I couldn't get over how soggy it was. My recommendation is they should use another bread or not let the bread soak. The sausage was a sausage patty and the sides were burnt. The home fries were also overcooked. Overall, the flavor was there the execution was just lacking. Would I return? Yes, I would return for the popovers and outside ambiance. Interesting restaurant in an old house! Came during restaurant week with coworkers for lunch. Restaurant week menu had a lot of options in comparison to other restaurants participating. Food portions were generous/perfect. The crab and artichoke chowder was nothing special and not something I recommend but the grilled salmon was excellent!! It was very flavorful and different. I took the lemoncello cake to go and it was very good. Service was disappointing. Our server was slow and wasn't knowledgeable on menu items. We waited a while for our orders to be taken, had to ask another server to get the check and waited even more for our desserts to be packed though we asked for that early on. They were not very busy for this to occur and servers should be more attentive during lunch on a weekday. A co-worker liked the sauce on her salmon and asked our server about it by pointing and saying what's this? Our server literally said: that's salmon. Ha! Yes, she knew she was eating salmon because that's what she ordered ;) so she clarified she meant the sauce. Our server had to go back to the kitchen to ask. It was a basil cream by the way and very tasty. I did like the place/food but service was a turn off. We did tip well regardless :). read more
