First of all. Horrible service... The Dynasty would be disappointed! I have dined at a few different locations and this one is the only location where I ever experienced such horrendous service. The staff there were not accommodating at all. The apologies weren't sincere, they cared less. So let's get into my experience here. This place is busy... so my associate and I sat at the bar and waited for a seat to open up. While I waited, it took forever just to get the bartender's attention. When I finally did, he acted like I was interrupting his day. We finally got a table after what felt like an eternity, only to be ignored by our server for another 20 minutes. When we finally managed to order, the food took ages to arrive and was lukewarm at best. To top it all off, our server never checked back on us, and when we flagged her down, she seemed annoyed. We ended up here on a quiet lunch afternoon, so it only had like one other table occupied, and we got a nice personal experience from the affable man serving us. We tried the dan dan noodles and the dry pot. To get the obvious out of the way, yes it's greasy, no it's not eaten everyday in Chongqing or Sichuan. If i'm not mistaken, dan dan noods are a street food and that's how they got their name. The noodles were pretty good, especially once you mix em up and get the goodness at the bottom. They were not numbing, but in my few years of exploring dan dan noodles, it's clear that everyone does their own variation on it, and their's leans on the sesame side. We came to Han Dynasty because I have been craving Sichuan cuisine for a while. Ordered Dan Dan Noodles ($11.95), Fish in Pickled Chili Style ($24.95), and String Beans w/ Minced Pork ($16.95). I found it a little weird that the Dan Dan Noodles had a peanut butter flavor, and that they labeled it as having a spice level of 6/10. I did not taste any spice at all. The Fish in Pickled Chili Style was decent with a mild spice despite having a spice level of 5/10. I wish there were more pieces of fish. I really enjoyed the bamboo shoots though because they absorbed most of the flavor. The String Beans w/ Minced Pork didn't have enough "wok heat." Usually, Sichuan style string beans are more on the drier side and flavorful. This wasn't it. Overall the food was just okay. Unfortunately, if you want authentic tasting Sichuan food, I wouldn't recommend getting it from Han Dynasty. The restaurant is spacious, and there are 2 bathrooms in the back. My favorite chinese lunch spot/delivery spot and it gets kinda lit with going out music for a dinner spot on the weekends haha. Nomz: So because this is one of my go-to places I have a set of things I always order, classic lol. Lo mein: It's amazing, the picture perfect lo mein that lives in your mind but you can never find, it's here - you can also request spice if you like spicy and in my opinion it makes it even better. Beef in garlic sauce: Saucy, sweet (but not too sweet) and a little spicy, flavorful with peppers and onions and really tender meat. Amazing! Fried rice: I usually get vegetable because I've gotten meat in the other dishes, tasty and classic, you can also request spice in it if you want it. Wontons: My go-to because I like more spice, although I wouldn't say they're super spicy. They're the perfect bite and tastiness. Pork dumplings are also good, a little less spicy and a bigger bite. Service: Good service, they're nice and patient and check up on you enough times in case you need anything else. Ambiance: Cute bar, simple in a good way and cool murals on the wall. The food is fresh, big in portion size, comes out quickly, and will have you wanting more and more of it. It also helps the prices are incredibly reasonably given the neighborhood. Don't come here if you're looking for authentic Sichuan cuisine. You'd 100% find more and better tasting options in Flushing or Chinatown. The level 7 "spicy" barely had any spice. The flavor on the cumin style was good but overly salty. The string beans were honestly the best out of everything we got. You can easily tell this restaurant is catered more towards the tourists and non-Asians. The music was wayyyyy too loud to the point where we were struggling to have a conversation. Sichuan cuisine has become such a hot item (#1) in the US that it only seems fitting that Han Dynasty has its Philly roots firmly planted in the East Village, where the saturation of Chinese places has only become stronger over the years. It's been close to a decade since their hyped opening and they show no signs of slowing down. The main dining area isn't all that spacious but that doesn't stop people from coming here. For a long time pre-pandemic this place was so packed night in and out that the wait during prime hours could be as much as an hour. Most people are dining her with groups and it's too ideal of a cuisine not to. Service varies obviously, but is obviously a bit more abrupt during busy hours. A big part of their success has been boiled down to consistency. Their food is pretty standard Sichuan classics, ranging from dan dan noodles to dry pots. For the most part, the food is good. They have a decent variety and the flavor is not overly masked in Sichuan spice. While I think a good number of their dishes are a notch below most solid Chinese spots in more prominent neighborhoods. I have a soft spot for the dry pepper tofu and will always likely order cumin lamb and/or red oil wontons. I ordered 4 dishes for pick up on a weekend and my order was ready within 20 min. Most dishes on the menu cost around $17.55 and they all were pretty big portions! Food: -Eggplant with garlic sauce: This was for sure my favorite dish. I absolutely loved the eggplant, it had big eggplant pieces that were cooked until soft and it came in a thick sweet, spicy, and savory sauce. The sauce also tasted so good on top of rice. I would order from this restaurant specifically to have more of this eggplant. -Kung pao chicken: This was my second favorite dish, and now I see why it's one of the most popular! The chicken was slightly breaded and fried and tossed in Kung pao sauce. It also came with some peppers but overall I liked how the chicken had a crisp to it and yummy sauce. -Mapo tofu with minced pork: This dish was pretty good too, but definitely not my favorite mapo tofu I've had. I felt like the sauce was pretty oily and the spice overpowered some of the natural flavors of the pork and tofu. However, the sauce still tasted good, I just wish it weren't so strong. -String beans with minced pork: I liked this dish, but it was definitely my least favorite of the four and I will probably order a different vegetable in place of this next time I come. We've ordered take out from here a few times already. I've usually only gotten the salt and pepper shrimp lunch special. I like the bed of lettuce and pieces of pepper under the fried oiliness of the shrimps. Definitely something you can't get if you're on a diet. This time, I tried the Dan Dan noodles which had great sesame flavor and spice but I thought it was missing a splash of soy sauce. The green beans were as expected and average. Lastly, the first taste of the pickled vegetable with fish soup shocked me as it was very different from the ones I've had before. I think it was more sour than I expected. But interestingly. We like eating at Han very much. But if you're ordering from, say, Uber Eats, there's no way to request something a little different from the way it's usually prepared. For example, if you don't want green peppers in the dish, it's too bad for you. And, even worse, there's no way to reach Han by phone! The beef hotpot didn't have that much beef and too much chili, ginger and other not as edible ingredients. Additionally the flavoring was only average. Meanwhile, the 3 cup chicken was way too sweet. I had visited the Han Dynasty on West 85th street and LOVED the food. I live near the East Village and thought I would try the Han Dynasty on 3rd Ave. For take out. I ordered the same dishes as I did uptown. The food uptown was delicately fried no heavy breading. The food received from the East Village location was heavily breaded and greasy. I had hoped the same owners would have been consistent from location to location but I was badly mistaken. If you want great Chinese food visit the location on West 85th. I was really hoping that HD would live up to the expectations set by all the 4 and 5 star reviews I saw here. My partner and I showed up around 6pm on a Friday night with no reservation. The first things I noticed but did not really judge or evaluate too harshly were that almost no one working there (or eating there) (not even in the kitchen) that I could see was chinese, and the restaurant's logo of a young chinese girl with full, sensuous lips slurping a noodle was just..... off. Oh. Also, the grade from the health department is "pending". still, they sat us at a 2-top (as long as we promised to be out by 7:15). There was a lone guy with a mac laptop wearing a Han Dynasty t-shirt sitting alone at the big round table in the back. He looked Russian to me. He was definitely not Chinese. He wasn't eating. He was just sort of hanging out alone at the biggest table in the place and to me he seemed out of place. After an uncomfortably long wait a waitress appeared. We ordered. 2 appetizers, 2 entrees and 2 drinks. 5 minutes later a guy shows up with our entrees. we explain that we would like to get our drinks and appetizers first. So he left with the entrees. 10 minutes later our appetizers and THEN our drinks appeared. My beer first, then my partner's cocktail a few minutes later. The cold sesame noodles were very delicous even though they lacked the usual cucumber pieces and scallion garnish. They were just noodles and sauce. There are no steamed vegetable dumplings on the menu so we ordered fried. We were served fried chicken dumplings. oh well. we ate them. they were fine. The pea shoots steamed with garlic were fantastic. The black bean chicken was fine though the portion seemed small. We paid (it was kinda expensive). we left. Han Dynasty leaves something to be desired. While the food actually wasn't that bad, the service was just awful. I came on a Saturday evening when it was surprisingly not particularly busy. I was seated pretty quickly, but that was about the only thing that occurred in a timely manner: water came late, the server took my order after I'd clearly been forgotten, my appetizer came last, and my beer never came at all (which was unfortunate because that's what I was most looking forward to). As far as my traditional test goes: the prices weren't great, the dishes were filling enough, and the flavor was pretty good--but ultimately, there's way better spots in the neighborhood. If you're dying for some spicy Szechuan, try Spicy Moon about 10 minutes away. With better options in such proximity, I wouldn't recommend this place. This is the best Chinese Szechuan restaurant in the east village. I have been eating here for years and I must say, the quality of the food is spot on an extremely consistent. I have tried everything on the menu at least once. When I tell you that everything is delicious, it's the truth. Everything is made fresh to order. My absolute favorites are Dry pot style, pickled chili style, cumin style (I love spicy) . All the soups are light but hearty. They have a pretty decent bar set up, including signature cocktails, 6 beers on tap as well as mocktails and Non alcoholic beers. There are vegetarian and vegan options upon request. The music and atmosphere is very vibey- you can have a conversation comfortably. Both Pablo and Oscar do an amazing job at keeping this restaurant consistent. The employees seem so happy.
