For dinner, we tried the General Tso's, beef & mushrooms, and rice dishes, and they definitely had a nice spice kick! The garlic broccoli was absolutely divine. The menu is a little overwhelming with so many options, but I loved that they included pictures--it definitely helped when deciding what to order. This was my first time visiting Tipsy Shanghai while I was in New York, and I had heard that Chinese food here was a must-try. I used Yelp to help me find a spot, and this place definitely did not disappoint. They're known for their pork ribs, and they were absolutely fabulous. Since I was dining alone, I couldn't order a wide variety of dishes, but I did try the chicken with black bean sauce, which was excellent. At the end of the meal they even gave me a small scoop of ice cream as a treat. I had the strawberry ice cream, and it was such a nice, sweet touch to finish the evening. The food overall was outstanding. You do need to make a reservation online, but there were plenty of openings and lots of seating. The restaurant is also easy to find, conveniently located right on the corner of the cross streets. Honestly, I wanted to order the entire menu because everything looked amazing. I even asked a couple sitting next to me about their dishes, and they said everything they tried was wonderful. One person recommended the orange beef and another suggested the hot and sour soup. I didn't get to try those since it was just me and that would have been way too much food, but they sounded fantastic. Next time, I'd love to come back with a group so we can try more dishes. Based on my experience, I'd definitely recommend giving Tipsy Shanghai a visit. read more

New location in st marks (was in Chinatown previously) was immediately greeted with the beautiful Chinese decor in the restaurant & seated immediately. Food menu was extensive and they had a good selection of cocktails as well! Food was great, we got the scallion pancakes, soup dumplings, fried rice & orange beef. Everything was exceptional except the orange beef only because it was cooked with celery and were not fans of celery hahah. I went to their EV location, and was first drawn in by the elegant old Shanghai interior. The restaurant filled up quickly during the dinner rush, a clear sign it's a neighborhood favorite. The service was impeccable, and they even gave us free strawberry ice cream at the end. ＊Pan Fried Pork Xiao Long Bao 小楊生煎  $7.95 Unlike the usual SJB with fluffy bao dough, this version had a thinner wrapper that burst with meaty juiciness and a crisp golden bottom. ＊Crab Xiao Long Bao 蟹粉小籠包 $7.95 The filling was juicy, and I could definitely taste the crabmeat. The only downside was the skins on all xlb were broken when they arrived. ＊Green Tea Sesame Ball 綠茶芝麻球 $6.95 I didn't expect the filling to ooze like lava!! It was like infusing mung bean sweet soup into a sesame ball rather than green tea. ＊Yangzhou Fried Rice 揚州炒飯  $13.95  You can choose one protein from shrimp, beef, or chicken. It was well-seasoned and came in a good sharing portion. ＊Minced Pork Noodle 炸醬麵 $11.95 Every noodle strand could be well-coated with the sauce, and loaded with savory minced pork. ＊Dongpo Pork 東坡紅燒肉 $20.95 My friend had been craving dongpo pork ever since watching Culinary Class Wars Give it a try if you're into a fattier cut of pork belly. ＊Sateed Shrimp with Dragon Well Tea $22.95 Skippable. The shrimp lacked that plump, bouncy texture, and the sauce was a bit too sticky. I also couldn't taste much of the tea flavor. ＊Mango Sago Pomelo 楊枝甘露 $6.95 A sweet treat to wrap up the dinner! The corner restaurant on 6th and 2nd Ave has more than meets the eye. Upon walking in, you're welcomed by Shanghainese décor, stepping away from the noise of the East Village. With old Shanghainese songs playing softly in the background, the space is well-lit and perfectly sectioned--ideal for large groups sharing a wide selection of dishes or a couple enjoying a hearty dinner. We started off with the Xiao Long Bao (pork), which came steaming hot--make sure to add a bit of vinegar and ginger for that extra kick. The tofu with preserved egg should be eaten right away as an appetizer; if it sits too long, the bottom soaks up the soy sauce and becomes overly salty. Some standout entrées we ordered included the boiled fish with pickled cabbage. The filet was tender and well-seasoned--not overly spicy or sour. The vegetables at the bottom soaked up all the flavor beautifully. All in all, Tipsy Shanghai is a great starter restaurant for anyone trying Shanghainese cuisine for the first time. This spot has a range of dumplings, dim sum staples, and classic Shanghai/Chinese food. The space is big and has a lovely atmosphere. I can't tell you a bad dish I had here! All of the dumplings had a really good skin and filling ratio. The soup dumplings were hot and filled with hot soup. The green beans and tofu were delicious vegetable dishes that paired well with the fried rice and pork noodles. And even though General Tso's Chicken is more westernized, their version is just so good. There were only two waitresses but they managed to get food to all the tables quickly. read more

I was really looking forward to trying a restaurant that serves food from my hometown, but unfortunately it did not live up to my expectations. 5/5: the 2 cold appetizers - marinated bran dough with peanuts & black fungus, and the beancurd pork bamboo rolls, tasted just like the flavors I remember. 4/5: Wuxi pork ribs (their signature dish) were decent, but not quite like what I had growing up. The "Dongpo pork" was more like regular braised pork belly, not true Dongpo style -- I honestly prefer my own version. The sautéed shelled shrimp was tender but a bit lacking in flavor. Shanghai greens were fine. 3/5: Fried pork dumplings and roasted pork buns were okay. However, the xiaolongbao skin was too thick. 1/5: Noodles with soy sauce & peanut -- do not order. There was no peanut flavor at all. Service was also somewhat slow, especially considering the restaurant was not very busy. Portion was on the smaller side. Overall, I guess it's a fine place for a quick lunch, but looks like I'll have to keep searching to find a new go-to Shanghainese restaurant. read more

I've had better, but it was still a solid dish. Drink options are soda and herbal tea. I got a free scoop of vanilla ice cream at the end. Atmosphere was pleasant and I couldn't stop admiring the decor. Business was slow (it was a weekday lunch) so they didn't mind me sitting there for a while. The drunken chicken was not at all fresh, the skin was mushy and gross. The xiaolongbao was nothing special, the skin broke when I tried to pick up. The custard buns were decent. The green beans were the only kind of good dish we had. The chilli oil noodles did not come out as expected, I didnt see chilli oil but a bed of mushroom on top of the noodles, they said that's their version of it. Well, if that's the case they need to put a picture on the menu and mention mushrooms. They let me return it though. I got a different noodles instead and it was not very good, the noodles were overcooked and soggy, I wondered if they reuse the noodles sent back. read more

Such a cute kitschy decorative dining room. A lovely, friendly, warm and hospitable server. We started with fantastic pan fried dumplings, I believe they were $11.95. They were delicate and exploding with a juicy inside. We also ordered scallion pancakes that were golden brown, crisp and bursting with flavor. For the mains, we ordered salted meat rice. It was good but I feel it needed additional seasoning to give it that WOW FACTOR!!!! The braised pork ribs, on the other hand were impeccable! A delicious, savory brown sauce and soft pork ribs that almost melted in your mouth. They complement each meal with a small strawberry ice cream and traditional Chinese hard candy. One of the worst Shanghai restaurant in NYC. Food is way below par, Service is so slow (just one waitress) and inattentive . Whoever gave 5* can not be Chinese. Wuxi Pork Rib is dry not juicy. DongPo Pork is so dry that I barely can chew it. The best DongPo Pork is in Taiwan that taste so juicy and tender, melting into your mouth right away. The noodles here are so bad that is not traditional ones. The interior is decorated nicely but I care about food quality more. read more

I went here a few months ago with a friend, and we really liked everything about it. The decor is lovely -- this is usually way at the bottom of what I consider important -- the service is friendly and attentive and the food is great and very reasonably priced. So I went back, this time with someone a bit more demanding, and if anything everything was better. There is a prix fixe lunch which gives you an appetizer or soup, a main course and beverage, but lo and behold, we were offered small dishes of ice cream in addition, very welcome on a very hot NY day. Both of us were more conveniently located to the other Tipsy Shanghai locations, but one has to remember that a chef you know is the one you know, and no chef can be serving lunch in 2 locations simultaneously. Of course, I will happily try the others, but if you are in the East Village, Tipsy Shanghai is an excellent place....I will certainly have dinner here soon. read more

Terrible, slow service and the food was nothing special. The decor is carrying the whole show. It wasn't crowded on a Saturday right before dinner time but service was slow and questionable anyway, and it got even worse as they began to fill up. The first warning sign came when the waitress wouldn't let us both order. She ran away before the second person could say their order! We called her back and she convinced us that we should just stick with my order because it was a big soup. As a result, we didn't get to both have our preference. It's like they didn't want us to order more food? Then they forgot drinks and had to be reminded. The food itself was ok- the veggie buns were pretty dry though. For the final showstopper, they weren't bringing the check. Multiple customers would come up to them all asking/reminding them to bring the check! It took forever. I feel that they should just be transparent from the start if they are having staffing issues. read more
