My recent visit to Han Noodle Bar (HNB) was a pleasant dining experience. HNB is visible establishment on the famous Monroe ave here in Rochester. I heard good things from friends and I checked out previous yelp reviews, so I felt confident in my choice to visit, and what a pleasant visit it was! The ambience of HNB is busy and fun. There is a lot of seating that gives the diner a view of the usually bustling Monroe Avenue. The seating is comfortable but noticeably close together. A sign here in Rochester, that you're in a popular spot. I went on a Monday and was there for the dinner rush. HNB filled up almost to full capacity on a Monday! Impressive! The menu is very Chinese and there are no pictures. It may be a good idea to research what you want before stopping in. I did so and ordered the Braised Pork Belly buns as a starter and the Dan Dan Mein as my main course. The Pork belly buns were nothing short of amazing. I would 1000% reorder them. Simply, delicious. The Dan Dan Mein was spicy, hearty, delicious and satisfying. This was a great experience from setting to seating to eating. Summary: Han Noodle Bar is a restaurant that specializes in noodles (no surprise), and has a variety of broth and non broth dishes. There are also non-noodle dishes too. Price: Relatively inexpensive for the amount of home made ingredients appear to be going into the dishes. Main broth and noodle dishes are $7-10, and the steamed meat buns are $4 for an order of $2. I never feel like I'm being ripped off. Taste: Everything I've tried so far is quite good. Some more than others, but I've enjoyed it all. My absolute favorite thing so far is the Spicy Diced Chicken Steamed Buns. The flavor of the chicken is unique and delicious, and the consistency of the bun is just right. The Roast Pork Broth Noodle with thin yellow noodles has been my favorite noodle dish so far. The pork is delicious, and I'm not normally a pork person. I've also tried the pork belly buns, Dan Dan Noodles, and Spicy Chicken Broth Noodles with Lo Mein. I didn't really care for the Dan Dan, as other people mentioned, the aftertaste is odd. But it's edible. Atmosphere: I don't really like Monroe Ave. It's kind of busy, and everything is cramped. That said, there is a parking lot here, shared with Dogtown, and the times I go, this works well. The interior is really enjoyable to me for some reason; you can see the chef in the back making the dishes, and the tables are laid out in a friendly manner. It's nice inside. Service: There is one waitress that works on a certain day that is like the nicest person ever. It does sort of balance out though as this particular waitress doesn't refill water glasses as much, but whatever. I haven't had any problems at all with the staff here. In fact, the one Chinese guy that rang me out, which seems like he may be the owner, or a chef, is totally cool and enjoyable to talk to. Overall: I love it here. It does so much right. I give it a solid 4.5. Why not a 5 you ask?: I've tried a handful of noodle dishes based on what sounds good from the menu, and some of them were different than what I was expecting. The roast pork had large pieces of leafy vegetables, and the spicy chicken was named because of the chilis that are added to the broth and combined with green peppers. The menu doesn't indicate any of this. Thankfully, I like pretty much everything and haven't been disappointed, but I was surprised a couple times from what came out in my bowl. It's probably my fault for not asking, I know, but most menus are a little more clearer as to what you'll actually be getting in your bowl. That said, it's all still been delicious. read more

Came here on a friends recommendation while in Rochester for work. Came on a cold weds night to find a short wait but seeing lots of happy faces in the dining room, I waited. I ordered a duck noodle soup with thin yellow noodles when I sat down. The service was very efficient and friendly. The food came very quickly and wow, it's among the best I've had. I've had duck noodle soup all over the world including it's birthplace in Hong Kong. The noodles were cooked well with a great texture. The duck was very tender and flavorful. The broth was great and I pretty much drank it all. My only complaint is the portion size was a bit small but at $9 seemed reasonable. The Han noodle bar is now my second favorite Chinese restaurant. That says a lot for me because prior to my experience I didn't trust many Chinese food spots for take out let me say. I had the Garlic Beef and some spring rolls, which also came with fried rice. The Garlic beef was the best I've had to date, the spring rolls were delicious and satisfying, the fried rice could have been better but mixed with the garlic beef it was still good. My wife had the steamed dumplings and the lo Mein. I could tell by her happy dance that I was good! When I asked her if she enjoyed her food I got the seal of approval, "mmmmhmmmmmm"(cheeks full plus the enthusiastic head nod) Han noodle bar is definitely going on my list of COVID-19 must eats. Chewy noodles drowning in spicy, savory pork sauce topped with lightly pickled cucumbers. Just so good, and the portion size is huge, so it's two meals for the price of one. sesame chicken: this is exactly the classic Americanized sticky classic you want, done really well. This is usually my daughter's order and not really my thing, but the Han Noodle version had me asking, "Hey sweetie, can Dad have your leftovers for breakfast tomorrow?" fried pork dumplings: Oh yeah. This is the stuff. Somehow the dough is tender and chewy at the same time, with crispy edges and a flavor bomb inside. pork belly buns: Just insane. Get em. All this, and their takeout game is TIGHT. This was the first time me and some friends tried this place. I read the reviews and yup I'm about to write the same review as the majority of people have said about this place. It's only take out now because of covid. The service was quick, the order was correct and the food was warm. So that was good . We got the pork belly buns, they were good. The pork was flavorful and the bun was really soft. The spicy chicken and fried rice. This dish was our favorite, it had a lot of flavor and everything was cooked perfect. The scallion pancakes were good but greasy and was nothing great that I would order it again . So we just dabbed the grease off with a napkin. The dipping sauce it came with was very good. We also got the fried noodles with tofu. I've never had tofu but according to my friends who have had it before from other places , this was ok. We did all like the noodles , it was good and had a lot of flavor.Finally, the last dish we ordered was the Dan Dan noodles which were very disappointing. Zero flavor. Reading the reviews prior to ordering from this place , it's a hit or miss on the flavor which I don't understand. Maybe chef's in that back need to be retrained and ingredients need to be measured but when you order from a place the food should always taste the same as you got it before. That's why makes people come back and crave that dish from a specific lovey. Something needs to change so that it's consistent . I came here for beef flat noodles and what I got did the trick, although I have say I did have one of those "where's the beef?" moments because there was just enough meat to make it passable. The restaurant has a good atmosphere and I wouldn't mind going back if a friend suggested it, but the next time I'm craving flat noodles on my own I think I'll roll the dice somewhere else. Such a disappointment. We ordered delivery with friends. We were about ~10 minutes from the restaurant, but the food was delivered lukewarm. It had obviously been cooked a long time ago. The pad thai was one big conglomerate of noodle and entirely flavorless. Portions were miserably small. We ordered 5 spice tofu and received a dish with beef (we're vegetarians/vegans). After seeing commercials my wife and I decided to try them out before going to the RPO. We were not disappointed. I expected the restaurant to be a bit more upscale, it's essentially a takeout restaurant with an eating area, but the eating area is packed. The food is much better than typical takeout. I went here because I saw the Steamed Buns on a friends Instagram and I had to try them out for myself! I got the Braised Beef Steamed Buns and don't regret it. The bun is warm, soft, & sweet which helps with the flavors from the meat. The meat is well seasoned and cooked, it has a sauce on it that's a little sweet as well. Dear Han Noodle Bar, Thank you for helping me get through college. On my darkest days I would pull into that parking lot not knowing whether I needed my therapeutic treatment to come from you guys or from Dog Town. I would just sit there in my car, still wearing my white scrubs and trying to re-hydrate after an exhausting day of unpaid labor at one of our city's fine hospitals. I've lived a life that's been truly spoiled by good asian food, by the likes of my own mother, and from 6 years living in Boston. But in all that time, I've never found a place like Han's. You can casually walk in and BYO sixer from the mini mart next door, and just get a LEGIT noodle dish that will blow you away. Frankly, I give them bonus points for being more on a casual and/or hipster side of things, because it gets me to stop in on more occasions despite the food being of a higher quality than anything this casual. My typical order has become the Ginger Scallion noodle (which is vegetarian) with the addition of their braised pork belly (which pushes the word "vegetarian" down a flight of stairs). In nearly 2 years and nearly a few dozen visits, I have not sampled anything that encroaches on soup, ramen, rice entrees... I am here for friggin pan fried noodles, yo. Occasionally an app or two when I'm with other people. Within those realms, I've also tried the mei fun, some dumplings, the pork belly steam buns (duh), and an udon noodle... it's all been great... but since I often show up for therapy rather than fun or exploration, I've been ordering my regular dish about 80% of the time. In fact, sometimes I find it therapeutic to order take out and then stand there to watch the cooks do masterful noodle work on pans that seem to be hotter than the sun. One of my favorite experiences here was coming in on before New Years 2017. We decided to launch our pre-game at Han's thanks to their BYOB policy before finishing the night at Magpie. The staff was celebrating too, as they had their own spread/gathering set up in the back over a bunch of tables. For some reason it just felt extra special knowing that literally every person in the building was happy and eating something delicious. I live close to Furoshiki, but that place doesn't even exist to me anymore. And that's not to say that Furoshiki isn't good (they don't exactly do the same thing), it's just that Han IS that good. To be fair, we ordered takeout. Pork buns met expectations. Tender, juicy and good size. Hot and sour soup was good. We ordered the duck app but it was missing from the order. The brisket noodles were good. Noodles cooked well, decent portion, good flavor. A non adventurous member of our party ordered sesame chicken - standard. Overall it was good and somewhat different than other Chinese restaurants. Def better than the standard take out places. But nothing really jumped out at me other than the pork buns. And it was a bummer that the duck was absent. As others have said here, check your takeout bag before you leave the restaurant. I would try Han again and look forward to it, though next time I would like to give them a fair shake and dine in. read more

Everything about this place screams fresh from the quality ingredients to the to the super hot (or super cold) food served. We had pork buns, steamed veggie dumplings, Vietnamese spring rolls and crab Rangoon. The dumplings were made with a nice mix of veggies (broccoli, carrots, etc) and had a wonderful flavor. The soy sauce has some green onion added which was a perfect combo. The crab Rangoon was served with duck sauce which is different then the red sauce we are usually provided at other places and the duck sauce combo was delicious! Despite the decent (depending on what you order) food, Han Noodle Bar cannot seem to get it right when taking and assembling to go orders. On a consistent basis, my to go orders have left items forgotten or missed when ordering. Until now, I have been too forgiving and continue to go back on occasion. As follows is my sordid tale of poor service: A few months back, I ordered two of the same House Noodle Soup entrees (one for me and the other for my date) and they only provided/recorded that I ordered one. I made sure to reiterate it over the phone, but alas, it was missed. I then had to go back in, wait 15 minutes for the meal to be prepared, and hope that one of the two wasn't cold by the time we sat down to eat. Additionally, on two separate occasions my "two separate orders of fresh spring rolls with shrimp" have resulted in only one order (which contains two spring rolls). To be fair, the third time we ordered, I made it clear that I wanted a total of FOUR spring rolls and they got that one right. Tonight, a day that I will look back on as the last straw with Han Noodle Bar, I called in a to go dinner which included one order of their pork belly steamed buns. A marginally pricy item, as I was charged $7.99 for it - but you guessed it - when I got home the Steamed Buns were not included even though the order was recorded and charged. I called them and complained - they gave me a credit for next time - but did not offer to deliver it (I get it, they may not have drivers but I wasn't going back out into the cold either). A credit for next time? Ugh. Can you sense my overwhelming enthusiasm to go back again? We're not right for each other Han Noodle Bar. You're a mess, and frankly, I'm out of your league. I've been meaning to check out Han Noodle Bar for a long time. I finally got around to it on a Saturday night. There was a wait but they took down my phone number so we could go for a little walk while we waited. The restaurant is definitely small but once seated at my table I was comfortable. The food was absolutely AMAZING. I literally can't say anything negative. The service was also great. I ordered another meal to go and they perfectly timed everything for me so it was ready to go when we were. I was able to get a large serving of egg drop soup, two large shrimp spring rolls, and two generous pork buns for $11 INCLUDING tax. I've been there a few times and have never been disappointed. Delicious and flavorful food! I can't eat that fake fast Chinese food anymore as it doesn't agree with my stomach, however I could eat at Hans Noodle bar everyday and feel great. Han is my go-to takeout for Chinese food and arguably among the best in town. Evenings are always busy whenever we grab takeout from here and if a packed house is any indication of how good the food is, then many people are in agreement about the greatness of Han. The shrimp fried rice is my staple. It is perfectly made. Additional dishes include crab ragoon, General Tso's chicken, sesame chicken, spring rolls, shrimp and broccoli, and garlic shrimp. Han Noodle Bar legitimately saved my life a couple of days ago. Although now in hindsight I probably should've ordered noodles at a noodle bar. Anyway. I stopped in during the aftermath of the blizzard as Han was the only place open on the Monroe strip, which is within walking distance of my apartment. I'm happy that they were, otherwise, I don't know when I would've gone in. The head guy in charge, who I'm assuming was the owner was very kind and took care of me right away. The interior is a bit on the small size, but is about the same size if not a bit bigger than most Chinese places. I ended up ordering the Sesame Chicken which came with fried rice and the portions were huge. I was so pleased. Really good prices as well. The late and great Anthony Bourdain told Bon Appetit magazine, "Anytime I'm eating spicy noodles in a bowl, I'm happy." A statement that I never truly understood until dining at Han Noodle Bar. There have been countless reviews based around the news story on their Braised Pork Belly Steamed buns. They are fantastic, and a perfect snack anytime you wander down Monroe Avenue. I have to interject that still tasty, they aren't as good as they were 6 years or so ago when I used to wander in on my way to work daily just for these tasty steamed pockets of goodness. However, they are still the best around and should be eaten by the fistful every chance you get. Let the pork belly open the door, the warmth of the staff open your heart, and the spicy bowls of noodles capture your soul. My personal favorite dish here would be the Crispy Pan Fried Noodle, extra spicy, with tofu added. When it arrives, please let it sit for moment, because it has the temperature of molten lava. But as it cools and the noodles below soften a hair, and you taste this perfect dish of spicy and crunchy, you realize its imprint is touching a visceral part of you that is only touched occasionally. Then pork melts in your mouth, the noodles crunch to create a mouth feel of heaven. The spice loosens that sinuses and tightens it's hold on your palate, making every bite irresistible. The vegetables remain crisp and taste fresh from start to finish. The Szechuan Beef in spicy broth is my go to when I am asked what should I try when we go for the first time. It is comfort food at it's best. That sealed Hans fate for me, Bourdain hit the nail on the head, and that single bowl of noodles, slurped off the end of chop sticks, was one of the most comforting moments I could give myself. The beef is perfectly braised, and there are thin slices that cook in the piping hot spicy broth. Bok choy is my favorite vegetable and I try to hold it for last, but I can't and it's a perfect compliment throughout this dish. Han Noodle Bar doesn't disappoint. If you are a so called loved of Asian food, but only have familiarized yourself with "Sesame Chicken" or General Tsos, then you haven't dared to experience the delectable world of Asian cuisine. Let Han Noodle Bar pop your cherry, and if you so desire you can get those Americanized Chinese food dishes here too; but please buy them to go after you've eaten the most memorable bowl of noodles Rochester offers. read more
