We came in with a large group for teppan on a Friday night. Service was cheerful and well organized. We all started with some hot saki and we also tried the seaweed salad. Drinks came out fast and were kept filled throughout the evening. The seaweed was OK. It came on a bed of unflavored cucumbers. Our meals came with small salads that were mostly iceberg lettuce and had not been drained properly, so there was a lot of water at the bottom of the bowl. The ginger dressing was OK but didn't have a lot of flavor. The texture was a bit weird too. We waited a while for the next course. Our soup didn't come out until after our teppan chef arrived. It was a dark-colored beef broth a very light flavor and 2 mushrooms, and was a welcome arrival. Finally, after some rather adroit spatula juggling, our chef began to cook. The fried rice was pretty plain and didn't taste like anything. We all enjoyed the shrimp appetizers, which were very tasty, zingy with lemon. I also tried to scallops, were were perfect. I had the steak and hubby had the filet mignon. The filet mignon was clearly superior, very tender and juicy with a good flavor. I found the steak bland and the cut of meat wasn't great; there was some gristle in the middle. However, it was good enough to eat, and we ate it all. With 2 sakis, 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, tax, and tip, the bill came to about $100, which is pretty standard for this kind of meal but part of what you're paying for is entertainment. read more

Keep in mind that I am writing this from the bathroom, since I am sick as a dog from what I ate last night. That should bring red flags from the get go. I like to try the Las Vegas roll at every sushi place I go to. The one at Hana was ok. I agree with another poster that it had too much cream cheese and the eel sauce tasted strange - not sweet enough (how often does one say that about eel sauce?) Also, the only seafood in the Vegas roll was crab - a little cheap - no eel or salmon to be found. I also like to try the squid salad everywhere I go. This one was, again, ok. Actually, it tasted EXACTLY like what they have at Sushi Cho. I wonder if they get it from the same source. My partner had the Crunchy Spider Maki (or something like that) with the fried soft shell crab. He said it had no flavor. He also ordered the Sakura roll - wow - visually it's a trip (see the photo I uploaded). It comes in heart shaped pieces with a pink soy wrapper and mango sauce. It tasted interesting, but its visual appeal outweighed its taste. The real star of the meal was the salad they serve at the beginning. It had crab, tempura flakes, masago, ginger, slices of red chili, and piece of raw salmon atop lightly pickled cucumbers. It was delicious and a definite departure from the usual miso and iceberg salad thing that most places serve at the beginning of the meal. Our server was friendly (if not apologetic due to the wait time to get our food.) The place was busy and LOUD (there was a large party at the teppan table behind us.) Sitting at the bar was not the fun experience that it usually is. The sushi chefs did not engage us in conversation and we couldn't see what they were doing because the bar is placed very low. All in all, I don't think I'll be going back. I don't have enough stock in Imodium. Sachiko down the street does a way better job. The food is better, albeit less fancy and not as chi chi in their presentation, but better tasting and doesn't make me sick. read more

My sister, friend and I came in for dinner. We chose to dine at the Hibachi The menus were very worn. It was our first time, so the server did explain how it works They bring out soup and salad first Salad is an iceberg mix with ginger dressing. Dressing was tasty, iceberg mix was from a bag Soup was a dark broth with 2 mushrooms in it. Very Salty I ordered the chicken and steak The chef came out, very interactive, did lots of tricks for us. Ordered Chicken Fried rice it appeared as the chicken was reheated and served to us as it was dry and had no taste to it. Panda Express makes this place look like a shame and disappointment. Honestly this place was one of the worst places I have eaten at. I really don't understand the good reviews for this place. It was thoroughly disappointing and a waste of money. It took a long time to be served and a long time to get our food. We ordered the Ika appetizer which was basically frozen squid rings like the ones you get at a supermarket, barely deep fried. The breading on the outside was soft and oily. My guess is the oil wasn't hot enough. I also ordered the seaweed salad which was served to us frozen. I don't understand why someone thought it was a good idea to serve a customer frozen seaweed salad. I would have totally understood if they said that the item wasn't available. We sent it back and they kindly comped us the appetizer which was good because the appetizer wasn't worth the money. If they didn't offer some sort of compensation I probably would have asked for the check so I could leave. This was the second time I have sent something back in my life. It was that bad. We also ordered sushi which tasted very bland and wasn't anything special. When I was looking around the restaurant you could see the floor was very dirty where we were sitting. Lots of food on the floor. My server was very nice but you could definitely tell she did not want to be there. So stay away from this place folks. It's definitely a no from me. read more

This is my second lunch here. The choices of Sushi restaurants are slim south of Tucson but this is a great one to have! I like that the restaurant is very large and spread out. You can sit at the Hibachi tables, Sushi bar or tables they have both high top tables as well as low. They have a nice variety of Sushi, Teriyaki, noodles and pretty much cover all Japanese cuisine. It should suit everyone's taste. I have only had the Sushi here although not the best I have had it's solid and definitely a place I will visit again. The fish is fresh tasting and the selection of Chefs rolls are creative. I love the Flaming Mignon roll $17. The specialty rolls are on the high end but come out beautiful. The simple rolls i.e tuna, salmon avocado are priced very reasonable ($4-$8). The service both times have been pleasant. I recommend this as a date night (although I have not done this -yet!) the tables have a lot of room around them for privacy and there is a movie theatre attached. Dinner and a movie! read more

The server (wine) was very slow, in fact we had to ask a second time for our drink when she came around to ask how we were doing. I have given this place a couple of chances to please, however it remains a disappointment. The location is great, and it provides a perfect last minute place to eat if you decide to see an unplanned movie. The food is the problem. I have only had the hibachi, but I believe the meat quality and storage is the issue. Although the chicken and shrimp seem fine and actually taste quite nice, I have had the steak as well at each meal and it is very poor. The steak has the spoiled bloody taste, as if it has been left too long soaking in its own blood and aged thus. Sometimes this can be cooked out (although not strictly safe), but the poor quality of the meat with no marbling prevents even this. The meat is clearly not cared for appropriately and therefore should not be consumed. This is probably why I was ill after each visit... On a lighter note, the ambiance is nice despite the location. It is reasonably well set up and seems like it could do well if they can fix the problems in the kitchen. read more

Have been coming here since it opened and it keeps getting better. They have awesome beer and saki specials everyday. They also have $3.00 sushi specials everyday which keeps us coming back on a weekly basis. The hibachi is expensive but its a great show and the food is great. During the day its nice and quiet, some weekend nights its really packed. Not sure why this place gets bad reviews because to me the price, the staff, and the food is great. Have visited for birthdays with a huge party and everyone was very satisfied. As long as the weekly beer and sushi specials stay on the menu we will continue to visit weekly. I've been to this place a handful of times hoping and thinking it will get better. It never does. Those that think this place is the best have obviously not been to some of the really good places here in Tucson. My opinion is that it is overpriced, mediocre service and the presentation of food is bad considering the price. If I pay a lot for a meal out... I expect it to look at the least appetizing. My deep fried soft shell crab looks the same every single time i order it. Contrary to popular belief a maraschino cherry garnish is not appropriate for all dishes. I've been here several times and now I'm finally sitting down to write a review! And boy does Hana Tokyo deserve it. It's nice to have a sushi place on the southside (and by the movie theatre!) to encourage b/f's to take their wonderful girlfriends on dinner/movie dates. LOL The decor is beautiful inside. You walk in to be greeted by the hostess, who will take you around "the wall" to seat you. The bar is nice sized and always seems busy around dinnertime. There are 3-4 teppan tables if you like dinner and a show, otherwise you'll be seated at a booth/table combo. There are several different lunch specials here (if you're going for lunch) along with various happy hour specials of half priced rolls and drinks. I highly highly HIGHLY recommend the Angry Dragon Roll. It's delicious and I could probably stuff myself on three of their delicious-ness, easily. It's a traditional sized 8 slices, so it's not small, it's just so darn GOOD! I'm not a huge fan of their Las Vegas Roll, but that's simply because the two times I've tried it, it just had too much cream cheese. However, their Crunchy Maki Roll more than makes up my number two spot. All their rolls are delicately done and not sliced in pieces that are too big for your mouth. Their miso soup is light with just the right amount of tofu. The lunch special comes with either a miso soup or a small salad. The salad has what I think is 1000 island dressing (or some variation) so I always recommend going with the soup. To get edamame, you do need to order it separately, but it's well worth it. It comes to your table salted and still warm from being boiled. All in all, this place is hands down one of my favorite sushi places in town. read more

I've dined at Hana Tokyo several times, but this is my first review. The service today was the best I've experienced, as it's been hit-and-miss in the past. The lunch crowd was a little light today, which could explain the improvement, plus there appeared to be a server in training. Regardless, the wait staff was very attentive and courteous. Mom initially wanted the shrimp tempura lunch bento, then considered the sashimi lunch special. I noticed the sashimi appetizer actually cost more than the lunch special, plus the special had 9 pieces of sashimi compared to the 6 piece appetizer, so it became a no-brainier. I also compared the price of the shrimp tempura appetizer to the bento lunch and while the bento was a couple bucks more, the additional food (3 pcs. California roll, 2 dumplings, rice, 2 orange slices) was worth the difference. I ended up getting both the sashimi and bento for Mom (I ordered the tonkatsu bento) and told her we'd take home any leftovers. The food arrived quickly, and was very tasty. My Mom loved the sashimi (3 pcs. each of tuna, salmon, and hamachi), sharing some with me. After enjoying the dumplings and a few pieces of tempura, Mom was full. After the sashimi and my own bento, I was also stuffed. I should note you have a choice of either miso soup or a salad with the lunch bento, and we chose a free Spicy Crab Crunch roll using the Yelp! Check-In. I asked our server for a to-go box, and he had the insight to include some tempura sauce for us. All in all, the food was great, as was today's service. We'll definitely be returning to Hana Tokyo, not because it's the closest sushi restaurant, but because of the consistent quality of food coming from the kitchen, the pleasing atmosphere, and the improved service. read more

Just heard about this place from a colleague at work, so when a craving for sushi hit, went to try this joint. At noon there was plenty of seating and the staff was friendly. We sat at the sushi bar and tried a few rolls and some sashimi. The fish was very fresh and tastey. Great to have good sushi in this part of town. read more

Very good. I've never been disappointed when coming here for dinner. We were seated right away at a 'grill' table. There were 3 in our party and a party of 4 were already seated-our timing was just right. I had a Yelp coupon for an appetizer, the server was very pleasant and helpful. The chef was very nice & entertaining, the other party had 2 young boys & he was great with them, flipping them a bite from the grill (once it cooled). We recently moved to the area and had our eye on this place. After reading the lack-luster reviews on Yelp, we decided to avoid it. Came to the movies with a neighbor and she insisted we try it. Wished we wouldn't have. Should have figured that walking in at lunch time and there only being 1 table seated was a sign to vacate. Service itself, was decent (1 of 2 tables so it better be). We got 3 of the Happy Hour rolls, 2 others rolls and some gyoza. Fish did not seem fresh. It was dry, devoid of taste and there was no...presentation to the food. Basically, rolled up and slapped on the plate. One of the best things about sushi is the art behind it and well...my first grade students could have done better. Gyoza came without sauce and when I asked for some she told me that it was already on them. I replied that I'd like some more and she brought me (I kid you not) a teaspoon full. Basically whole experience left me kind of grossed out and disappointed. If you want sushi on the south side of Tucson, do yourself a favor and head up the street to Sushi Lounge instead. read more

My family goes here often, I'd rather drive further and go to Sushi Garden; but out of convinence I assume they often chose to celebrate ocassions here. We always go in large parties of 8 or more, so keep that in mind while reading this. In my opinion, they are under staffed; they only have one bartender whom also acts as a server to the area left of the bar. Which means if they are busy, you'll sit there for 5+min waiting for service. No one says "ill be right with you", I have to ask if there is a bartender. Hes so overwhelmed with his duties I feel he makes sloppy drinks, overflowing the glass causing it to spill everywhere as he sets the glass down infront of me. Does'nt get me a napkin or wipe the area, until I ask for one. The waiters seem to be unexpierenced and I find myself constantly asking for my food (if its been a while since I ordered), or for a refill. THE FOOD IS GOOD, sushi fresh but I feel it is way overpriced for the amount of sushi they serve you. When the bill comes, it is always a mess (remember were in a large party) and we are correcting and moving everything around to the correct tab. If you live in the area and distance isn't an option, I would suggest going somewhere else. But if distance is an option, you wont be disapointed with the food, the service maybe.. read more

Our family ate at the hibachi side last night and had a great time. Andres was entertaining and cooked our meals perfectly. It was expensive, but no more than any other hibachi grill. After all, you're not just paying for the food, you're paying for the show! Service was adequate, food was amazing, and everyone from 8 to 60+ enjoyed themselves. I been coming to this place since it was open in 2011. They offer hibachi that they cook in front of you japanese bbq is what I call it by far the best in town!!! The sushi and kitchen food always awesome. We come by almost every weekend before the movies, they recently just remodeled and the place looks even more modern than before. I loved it!!!! The service was EXCELLENT and food was incredible. My finance and I have visited most Teppanyaki restaurants and there was only one that we really liked. It is closed and we were left with a less than stellar list of choices. We live in Corona, so driving 40+ miles to NW Tucson or Oro Valley is out of the question. So the location of this restaurant is excellent. I read the previous reviews before we went and I hope the people that were mentioned are no longer there. I didn't see any sad or upset faces. It could be because the Teppanyaki chef's were squirting copious amounts of Sake in our mouths via plastic dispensers. The price was also great compared to other Teppanyaki restaurants we've visited. This place has a lot of mixed reviews but I was seriously impressed when we went here for my sister's b-day dinner. We stopped here because its next door to the Harkins theater. I ordered the Vegas roll and gyoza, it was absolutely delicious! I also enjoyed the unfiltered Saki I ordered. Everyone was thrilled with their meals.. and we had a few Saki bombs! hahaha.. yes good times. I have a weak stomach when it comes to Asian food and sometimes if the food is even a little off, it can seriously do some damage, but I didn't get sick from anything I ate there! hooooray!
