Pick up only! They have pickup down to an art form. Honestly, I am super into this place. I love their combination meal options and 10000% would come back for this. For $22 you can get miso soup, 2 or 3 entrees, and rice. I got a california roll, teriyaki chicken, and vegetable tempura and got 2 meals out of it! My partner got the california roll, sashimi, and tonkatsu. Everything was really good! The tonkatsu was a little dry but we still enjoyed it. The portion size is very fair and I love the variety you get. Who doesn't want to have a lot of options in a meal? It's all totally good and genuinely a better than expected california roll. The sashimi was fresh and tasty, the soup is comforting, and the teriyaki chicken is exactly what you would expect with an addition of a nice char on some pieces. Recently, we learned they reopened for inside dining, so we decided to see how it was, and we were pleasantly surprised how updated and fresh the interior decor was compared to before the pandemic. The inside was completely refreshed with new tables and flooring and very comfortable. This is my favorite sushi restaurant in the entire world! The rolls are delicious, and there's such a good variety. Ordering online is easy and I love that you can customize your roll by adding tobiko or taking out cucumber! They are always kind and on time, and go out of their way to fix any mistakes or issues (I've ordered from them dozens of times and once I forgot to add in the special instructions to omit something I was allergic to, and they remade the roll for me even though it was my mistake). My favorite roll is probably the King Dragon, but I just really love the flavor profiles here. If you want great take out, this is the perfect place! read more

I've been door dashing here for a while now, but I did my first direct order today and called it in. We ordered 10 3-item bentos. The lady on the phone was extremely helpful and clear. There were not any issues with our order. Everything was clearly labeled, and everyone was really happy with the quality of the food. I do wish they had a catering menu, so boooo about that. Hanamaru is a staple, and one of the best spots on the Sunnyvale area! I've ordered from here multiple times, and their portions have always been extremely generous (especially when you order their lunch bentos). I recently ordered their unagi don, and thought it was so good that I had to post about it! It was extremely high quality. My one gripe with the place is that their items like salmon teriyaki and beef teriyaki in particular isn't too amazing, and I did not like their soft shell crab - but many other items are fairly decent and I'd definitely still recommend this place to those in the area! read more

Yikes, what a bad night and experience. Went to try out this place because it's 5 minutes away from where we live. The setting is okay. It's a bit sad and could use some decor love. The staff was good, very nice, and attentive. Went to wash my hands in the bathroom though and there was water all over the floor. About 1/2" worth. They were also out of paper towels so I couldn't wash my hands, which was pretty gross after being in that bathroom. Makes you wonder how anyone working there washes their hands... Back at the table, ordered food. It came very quickly but was just average. A few minutes later a bug appeared on the wall. Not a fly or an ant, but a roach. Tint, but still. Needless to say I lost my appetite. We left after ordering some appetizers. I couldn't even finish it. Took some pics of what we ordered, which do look good. So visit at your own risk. read more

Honestly, my family and I love Hanamaru. But the last time we were here, it was so disappointing. I will admit that we came on a bad day at a bad time: Friday night dinner. But that shouldn't mean the food or the service quality should be bad. If anything, I feel like the service should be better so they can earn more tips. In the past, my family and I would come here, no problem. But the last time we were here, the service was horrible. We ordered 6 different dishes: some raw and some baked. Since some of our dishes were supposed to be baked, we knew that it could take a while and we knew all the dishes wouldn't come out at the same time. Of course the raw sushi entrees came out first (which was about 15 minutes after we ordered) and we slowly started eating it while waiting for the baked items. We noticed that it's been 20 minutes since we received the raw orders the baked items were taking a little longer than expected, so we asked a waitress. The waitress said she would check on the orders with the sushi chefs at the sushi bar. Another 15 minutes passed by and we were missing our baked items. We flagged down another waitress and she did the same thing: check on our orders with the chefs. At this point, we have been waiting 45 minutes and haven't received our baked items. We talked to a waitress AGAIN and she did the same thing: talk to the chefs at the bar. We watched the chefs at the bar to see if they were even making our orders and the 2 chefs were literally talking to eachother the whole time. And when they weren't talking to eachother, they kept talking to the people sitting at the bar; literally having full conversations. At this point, it's been an hour and NEVER received the baked items. So we told the waitress to take the order off of our bill because it's been way too long. And when they handed us the check, the baked items were still on there. I'm sure they just forgot, but the fact that they didn't even check before giving us the bill is kind of disappointing. My family hasn't been back there since then. Sometimes I will call in my order for pickup but I would probably never eat in. They are so close and convenient from where we always stay when in Sunnyvale. So I decided to order a bunch of items to try on the way back to our hotel to see if this is something that could become a place we would frequently patronize whenever we're in town. I placed the order through Yelp and proceeded to pick up at their door. There were a lot of food delivery folks that kept picking up while I waited. It seems they do get a lot of food delivery orders placed online. When I received my orders, the lady advised me that there are specials or discounts available on some items when ordered online. Freaking yummyness.. I had to update my review after FINALLY trying Hanamaru's rolls. Usually, I go for the bento boxes, but this time I decided to try some of their special rolls. We ordered the Awesome Hanamaru, Spicy Flyaway, Spider Roll, and Deep Fried New York. Wow.. these rolls are so delicious.. I just wanted to keep on eating them! The Spicy Flyaway consisted of spicy tuna deep fried. This roll was extremely flavorful and had a nice kick of spiciness to it. The tuna had a wonderful taste and the fried element of the toll complimented the tastes. I also liked how these rolls were served on a bed of onions. The Spider Roll was deep fried soft shell crab, avocado, and cucumber. I liked this one also.. the crab is quite delicious. It wasn't one of my favorites.. kind of predictable.. but still pretty good. The Awesome Hanamaru was a deep fried California roll with special sauce and macadamia nuts. This roll was excellent because of the complex flavors and textures. I loved the sauce and nuts addition :) YUMM Awesome Hanamaru is my favorite roll so far :D :D The Deep Fried New York was salmon, cream cheese, and avocado deep fried. This was another one of my favorites because of the lovely combination of salmon and cream cheese. The addition of cream cheese incorporates a lovely creamy texture to the roll and compliments the salmon very well. It would be cool if they a spicy salmon roll too. Well now I must say.. I highly recommend Hanamaru for their rolls! I will be back here very soon to try out other delicious concoctions. read more

I have been back here over 20 times since my first review. The food gets better each time. I love the specials on the board and the amaebi. I recommend trying the crazy monkey roll or any of the dragon rolls. They are excellent. The chirashi is equally good for the price and quantity of the fish. This is definitely my go to place for sushi anytime of the day. YOU HEARD ME... Hanamaru is open all day long which is a big bonus for anyone hungry for sushi between 2-5pm. The service is always decent and the fish is always fresh. I recommend stopping by the next time you are in the area and want some good sushi anytime of the day. read more

Warning: Harley Davidson Roll is extremely spicy!! I consider myself resilient for the most part, but this one had a kick. For my entree I had the Spicy Sashimi Appetizer Salad which comes drenched in a bright red dressing, tastes a little like a mix between siracha and the korean red spicy sauce, but still less spicy than the Harley. I'm not sure if it was a blessing or a curse that my sashimi was disguised in dressing but I'm willing to bet it's not the best quality. On a positive note, I thought the 6 piece salmon sashimi was surprisingly high in quality. ($9) I had 3 pieces of sushi and felt stuffed, each piece is huge. Aside from the fact that this is a small business that should be supported, their food is terrific! We have our standby choices, but we regularly try something new. Also, they regularly put new items on the menu. Some of my friends who are hesitant about trying Japanese have tried the teriyaki chicken, which is some of the best in the area, and they willingly go back when we suggest Hanamaru for a gathering. My brother, who now lives in another state, always wants at least one meal (often more) at Hanamaru when he comes home to visit because it is that good. Here is what we got for Mother's Day lunch: Edamame (soy beans steamed in their pods)- fresh, hot, and yummy! Grilled Salmon Kama (the collar or neck of the fish that has some fat to it, lots of flavor, and meaty) - mouth-watering! Chicken Karaage (tempura fried chicken bites with a teriyaki dipping sauce) - marvelous! Avocado roll (simple roll with seaweed outside, rice inside, and two wedges of avocado in the middle) - simply delicious! Asparacado roll (tempura-fried asparagus and avocado wedges inside of seaweed and rice) - texturally splendid and simple flavor, almost a palette cleanser! Shrimp on Fire (avocado or cucumber and shrimp tempura inside seaweed and rice with spicy tuna, tempura bits, green onions, tobiko--orange fish roe that is flavorless and pleasantly crunchy, and orange sauce outside) - exceedingly scrumptious! Follow Your Dream roll (California roll of crab and avocado with a shrimp tempura inside of seaweed and rice and thinly sliced avocado on top - I asked Jimmy to make this for me when I was pregnant, and it has made it onto the menu because it is Sooo Good! Special order for my Gluten-Free mom: steamed asparacado roll (see above) with cream cheese - "Divine," Mom says! If you want some good Japanese food and you like supporting small businesses, this is a must try place! This is a family-run restaurant whose owners treat their long-time employees like family too. They are wonderful people, a couple, who dreamed of creating this restaurant that now helps them to support their two kids.
