Tried this spot for the first time with a pretty big appetite and the food was well flavored, tasty, and decently portioned (typical Hawaii prices ). Staff was very polite and the young lady at the counter was really helpful and enthusiastic with recommendations (I chose her top two recommendations). Loads of rice and a scoop of delicious potato salad. I ate the ahi plate fast then had the leftovers of the teriyaki and they were both very good. I don't really like eating rice so I wasn't full after the salads, potatoes and ahi portions. Again, decent amount that hit the spot but didn't fill me up. The place has a small, homey feel and if you decide to dine in, they provide complimentary chili water :) I ordered an ahi tuna poke bowl with sushi rice, shoyu, spicy mayo, cucumber, crab salad, and ginger chips. It was absolutely delicious! The tuna was not fishy at all and they were big cubes. The portion size was perfect for a hearty lunch and everything tasted incredibly fresh. The Ahi avocado burger is a tasty creation with a solid hunkin chunk of fish on a lovely purple taro bun. Definitely one of the better fish sandwiches I have ever had! My friend got the teriyaki chicken plate which came with rice, green salad , and Mac salad. Because the portions are generous here, I think you get decent value. Nice place to get poke bowls in Hawaii Kai. It's in the Koko Marina shopping center near Teddy's Bigger Burgers. They offer fresh and frozen (cheaper) ahi, salmon, he'e (octopus), shrimp, imitation crab and tofu on choice of rice. You get to choose how you want your protein prepared which I think is great. Haven't seen many poke places do that. I like having the option to mix it up. Anyway the portions of the fish is decent and the rice hot. My brother got the teri chicken plate. He loved it! The sauce was very good and the chicken was tender and moist, and a pretty good helping of it too. I thought the price was reasonable and the food tasty. I ordered the garlic parm crusted ahi salad for $22. Paid $4.00 xtra to sub the Caesar salad for mixed green, which was fine. The salad was supposed to come with a cheese garlic bread, but was told it would be xtra since I changed the salad to green and a side green doesn't come with the bread- yet I paid for a whole salad plate....? Anyway, as far as food quality , the ahi was way too salty , barely edible unless I scraped off the crust! Lettuce/veggies were fresh at least and the shoyu dressing was light and tasty. My first time trying this spot! Super delicious wow. Only thing I didn't like was the menu wasn't totally clear. I ordered a poke plate but after I got the bill I realized $25 was a big jump from the $14 next to the words "Fresh Ahi" So I asked what happened there and she said I get potato salad and green salad with the poke and rice. I figured it was my first time so might as well try it. The verdict: not worth it! The salad was pretty good, but the potato salad was no bueno. Just get the bowl with fresh ahi (which is amazing) and some rice. I also didn't like the avocado as it tasted old. I'm pretty picky about my avocado though. We tried HanaPa'a Market for the first time the other day, as it's been on my list of must-tries ever since we saw a segment on them on the news when they first opened. I'm just rarely ever on the east side of the island. Good first impression, as staff greeted us right as we stepped in (and also said thank you as we walked out). Although they also had salads, sandwiches, and plate lunches, they're known for their poke bowls. I don't believe they advertised their prices for the poke bowls, as they change depending on the market. However last weekend, it was $12 for a pre-frozen poke bowl, $17 for fresh. You can also choose between white rice, sushi rice, and brown rice (or salad for an additional cost). Of course we went with fresh, so we shared a fresh spicy ahi poke bowl with white rice (too expensive to both get our own). That was the most expensive poke bowl I have ever gotten. For $17, it was tiny. It was served in a small plastic take out container (that's to be expected), but I'm sad to say when closed, the poke didn't touch the lid. I liked that they had lots of onions mixed in (I love the freshness), but it was a lot because it was a filler for the lack of fish. The sauce of the spicy mayo was also more salty than I would like (smart, because saltier sauce means you'll eat more rice with each bite). The fish did taste very fresh though so that's good. Also I would recommend going with the sushi rice, as the white rice was steaming hot under the fish. I would imagine sushi rice would be a little cooler, as I don't like the hot and cold mixing. Warm rice would be preferable to the steaming hot rice we had. Also sad to say that although the few tables they have are situated in the small shop, none of the staff bothered to clean the tables between customers. I guess it satisfied my craving for poke, but I don't imagine returning, especially for that price (I'm also rarely in the area). I know inflation is huge right now but it's a little much for me. read more

We all know what used to be here. So the natural curiosity is "How do the poke bowls compare?". I work in the shopping center, so this review hinges on price, quality, and convenience. Price vs Quality: the price point for the bowls are the same as the previous poke joint. HOWEVER, I will say the ahi poke is night and day when you go fresh versus frozen. And that's where you should expect to spend about $4-5 more. I purchased two Spicy Mayo Ahi poke bowls- one fresh ($18) and one frozen ($13). The fresh ahi is delish- no aftertaste or slime. Perfect texture and portion. A bit heavy on the mayo, but forgivable with the extra ingredients (onions, furikake, and tobiko) giving a welcomed dimension of texture. The frozen ahi was not nearly as impressive, mainly because the fish taste was strong even with the strong marinade mixed with it. Portions were perfect, but this begs the question: Are you willing to spend almost $20 for a fresh poke bowl? That's completely up to you. Personally, my lunch breaks should hover around $12-15, but I'm willing to pay the extra to splurge on quality poke. Will def be returning to try the other marinades. read more

HanaPa'a Market is located in Koko Marina in the old spot that had Paina Cafe. They have a lot of selection of choices. You can create a bowl of a plate. The choices they had to create bowls or plates was ahi, octopus, salmon, shrimp, and imitation crab. Bowls are 1/3 pound of fish on a bed of rice. Plates are with added salad. They also have sandwiches, salads, and wraps. We got the salmon poke bowls. Last time I went to a poke place with my daughter the mix was a little too spicy so I made sure to ask if it was spicy. I asked about the shoyu one and he said it could be a little spicy because of the ginger. He gave her a little sample of the sauce so she could taste it. That was nice of him. She thought it was too spicy. So then he said how about the oyster sauce. She tried that one and she liked that one. So we ordered salmon with oyster sauce bowl and salmon with Hawaiian style bowl. We took both bowls home to eat. It was good. Surprising my daughter ate all her fish but maybe one bite left. The Hawaiian style mix was good. I took out all the onions, I'll ask for it out next time. But the mix was good with the ogo, salmon, shoyu, and Hawaiian salt. We also had a choice of having furikake on our rice. It was a nice touch. The meal was good. It was a lot of rice though and we threw away most of it. I wish there was more fish. Some other places have added fix ins like tempura flakes and avocado. Hopefully they will offer some of the extras in the future. I hope to come back soon and try their spicy ahi and spicy salmon poke bowls. read more

Recs: make your own poke bowl by picking 1-2 proteins, individual flavors for each (our picks included spicy mayo, ginger, and the unique fave - Hawaiian style which has pops of seaweed saltiness). Choose furikake for rice topping. Loved the pickled radish side as well. Must-tries include the Tako (octopus) and shrimp along with the prototypical faves: ahi tuna and salmon. Bowls ~$16. Every bite of tuna had a big coarse sea salt flake. Too salty. Also the store upon entering had a very acrid chemical smell. Not sure what it is. Almost like a gas leak. We were in the Hawai'i Kai area and wanted to try a new place. Found Hanapa'a Market and really liked their food. I love poke style, but don't care for green onions so I was happy they do it fresh and can make it with no onions at all. They give you choice of steamed, brown or sushi rice. Had mine with sushi rice and furikake. Staff is friendly and offers suggestions if you're having difficulty trying to decide. The only thing is, minimal seating. This place was such an unexpected find but ended up being one of the best poke places I've had! I got their ahi poke shoyu style and the tuna was so fresh! It really just melted in my mouth. You order at the counter and there are a total of 12 seats. Some counter seating and a couple tables. We ordered the teriyaki chicken plate and the garlic Parmesan crusted ahi. The teriyaki place was delicious. Chicken was tender and paired well with the potato salad and green salad. My husband got the garlic Parmesan ahi. The avocado is nice and ripe. Rice is fresh and not hard. When you get a poke bowl here make sure to always add avocado and unagi sauce! Makes a world of a difference. What really stood out for me tbh is the amount of stringed white onions that was added. It just gives the bowl a certain depth that others don't. Still rather come here than Onos.
