Hanare is an amazing omakase experience. The presentation here was easily one of the best I've seen. Every dish was beautifully plated, fresh, and thoughtfully crafted. The sushi chef was really friendly and accommodating to food allergies. What really sets this place apart is the ambiance. We were treated to a generous progression of courses, starting with a variety of appetizers and hot plates before moving into sashimi and nigiri, followed by dessert. My only small critique would be the pacing and order of the courses. By the time the nigiri arrived, I was already quite full. That said, it did not take away from how excellent everything tasted. Hana re is an omakase restaurant located at The LAB Anti-Mall in Costa Mesa. It shares a parking lot with other businesses; there's ample parking if you come early but is harder later on the evening. It was awarded one Michelin Star five years in a row but it has since been removed. We made reservations online which are required. You will probably miss the entrance if you're not looking for it. When you're facing the plaza's restrooms, look to the left for a black door in a storage container type building. There is a small piece of white paper next to it with the restaurant's name. The interior was pretty casual with typical finishes I'd expect to see at a sushi restaurant. The sushi bar seats about 7-8 and there are a couple tables holding bigger parties. The omakase course was $250/person over a 10 course meal. What I thought was really good were the Hokkaido crab and apple, the salmon and bluefin tuna sashimi, A5 beef from Hokkaido (my favorite), otoro (another favorite), chopped otoro handroll, uni, and sea bass. What I thought was good were the tempura and egg custard, caviar, belt fish with ponzu, sea bream, squid sashimi, and stripe jack. The wasabi was grated fresh and there was a strong punch to it. If you don't want wasabi you can request that it not be added and they will remember that. The vibe was very casual but the dishes were well thought-out and well-presented. Truly an exceptional experience. If you get the opportunity to try the chef omakase experience at Hanare, I highly recommend it! Yes, the price point is a little steep at $250/pp, but it seems on par with most other omakase dinners in the area, however, I do think some of others include 12-16 courses. In my opinion, 10 courses was the perfect amount of food. I love sushi, but I'll admit that I'm a bit picky with certain types of fish and textures, so I've always been nervous to try omakase. For this particular occasion I promised myself to be open minded and try each item served in the 10-course dinner, and wow... it did not disappoint! From start to finish, each course was delicious and perfectly prepared. The service was also exceptional. Prior to the first course our server asked about any food allergies or restrictions, and let us know that one course included beef, but they could substitute it if we don't eat red meat. (So glad we didn't substitute, because that wagyu was so yummy!) She also thoroughly explained each item served and did a great job of timing our next course so we didn't have to wait long in between. The whole experience was amazing from start to finish. Every dish that came out looked like art and there was a lot of time that took place behind the scene from the way each item. However! For the price point of $250/pp, I think there was a lot of tiny things that discouraged us from coming again. Since each dish was prepared way beforehand, many courses came out at odd temperatures; most of them in room temp food. The mini tempura fish was also disappointing. For a whole fried fish (smaller than 1 inch) it was stale and not crispy at all. It was fried hours ago for something that probably only takes 5 minutes because it's so tiny. The service and attention to detail was unlike anything else though. It almost felt like I was back in Japan. But for the price, we expected "freshly" prepared items. Even the rice for the nigiri wasn't seasoned with vinegar so it was bland except for the soy sauce the chef used. The inside is small and can seat less than 15 people. All handled by the chef. Overall, I would recommend it for the experience but not for the food. For $250 it was definitely pretty to the eyes but "ok" on the tastebuds. read more

Overall, Hanare was an incredible omakase experience. I made a reservation for 2 people 2 weeks before via OpenTable, and it was super easy to make the reservation, but you are also able to text them to make a reservation as well. My aunt and I sat at the bar (10 seats), which only serves the Chef's Omakase. I lost count of how many dishes total, but everything was so well presented and tasted amazing. The fish was high quality with the perfect rice to fish ratio for me. Probably the best dining experience I've ever had. The entrance is quite hidden, and we spent a few minutes searching for it. Upon arrival, the ambiance was calm and zen. The music was peaceful and welcoming, and the lighting was just the right amount of moody. It was around 11 or 12 courses and each dish was phenomenal. How can I even describe how much I love the food, atmosphere, and staff here? If I lived nearby, I'd happily come twice a month. I've tried more than 15 omakase around the world, and Hana Re's appetizers are by far the most creative and delicious. And their dessert - panna cotta? Truly unbeatable. The chef has a long history of perfecting it, and it shows. I ordered it three times in one sitting and had to force myself not to go for a fourth. This is the only omakase spot in SoCal where I say "See you next time" instead of goodbye. Was able to secure a seat at my first Michelin star (and full omakase!) experience three nights in advance via text messaging, for a Friday 5:30 seating. The staff at Hana Re was not only able to graciously accommodate for a second unexpected guest that I asked to change my reservation to include, but also allow for a 30-minute delay when my guest hit an unprecedented wall of traffic en route. Discreetly hidden away in the bustling LAB Anti-Mall, a rope curtain inside obscured the 9 seatings in our time slot, each with a close view of the food preparation. We were seated and provided menus by a very welcoming hostess, who brought our drinks and also a few of the courses throughout the evening. Chef Atsushi explained the ingredients of each dish as they were served with a smile. My personal favorite prepared dishes included the unagi with foie gras, hairy and baby crab, A5 wagyu, and the melon panna cotta dessert. Standout raw fish included the toro (unimaginably creamy) and uni nigiri (usually sourced from Japan, but due to transportation constraints the chef notified us that our dish was made with Santa Barbara sea urchin). I stayed hydrated with one of the fruitier sakes recommended by the hostess. At $250 per person, this was probably the largest splurge I have personally indulged myself in and it was well worth it. It was both our first time at an omakase, so we weren't sure if taking pictures would be rude and decided to just enjoy the moment. The place is small and cozy. There was a total of 5 guests that night, including us. It was a very intimate experience since the chef prepares each dish in front of us and explains everything as he serves each dish. Everything were plated beautifully. We loved most of the courses, especially the sushi! My only complaint was the multiple dishes with the dashi broth. We had some served warm as a soup, some cold as gel, and some as cold soup. We both didn't like the taste of it, so it was a bit dreadful to keep seeing its appearance every so often throughout dinner. Overall, we had a great time and loved all the sushi. Otoro for example is always super delicious but otoro here was juicy! You heard me, it's juicy. I haven't had otoro that was juicy before. They use really high end and great ingredients and products in every dish that comes out. I truly felt like I was able to taste the different senses like sweet, sour, and savory. I think my only critique would be that I hoped the sushi would have had more exotic cuts of fish instead of the tried and true toro, amberjack, flounder, etc...OR dressed up more creatively instead of just the nikiri brush on the nigiri. Got invited to this gem of a restaurant for omakase dinner. The entrance was somewhat hidden especially because I was looking for the colorful walls based on older Yelp photos. It is now brown with a tiny white square sign by the door. It is at the end of the Lab parking lot, on the same row as the restrooms. Inside was a small cute little restaurant with 8 seats at the bar, and a couple small tables. One chef at the bar, and one server handling all the customers. Their 4 Michelin signs proudly displayed by the inside of the entrance. Since the meal was omakase, you can just sit back and enjoy the conversation with your companions while waiting for each surprise course to be served. Food pace was relatively slow (giving you time to take photos and savor each course) as the chef had to prepare the food for everyone, and each item is a work of art, and extremely unique. Different from all the omakase I've tried in the past with quite a few cooked food options, a large variety of textures and rare ingredients. I texted the restaurant about a month prior to make the reservation. They tell you to confirm the rules from their website, and inquire if there are food allergies. CANCELLATION POLICY: They charge the full amount for no shows or cancellations later than 5 days before the reservation day. I understand the work going into prepping the meal but I think a 2 day grace period would be more understandable. NO SPECIAL OCCASION CELEBRATION. Wow. For $250/person before tax and tip... basically $650 for 2 people, no alcohol, with tax and tip... and you don't do anything for special occasions. It discourages me from common back since this is special occasions pricing, and I don't even get to feel special dining here. They offer an exclusive omakase experience with 8 seatings at the bar, 2 small tables for 2, and a small table for 4. On a more positive note, I would have to say the meal had unique qualities and flavor combinations I have not had at other restaurants. Chef was a true artist putting in beautiful finishing touches to each dish before presenting it to us. We were served the following for our omakase meal: - Santa Barbara Sweet Shrimp, Caviar, Lemon Foam, Squash Pure - Very fresh start to the meal. Nice sweet, savory and acidic bite. Also very beautiful, as was most of the dishes. - Pike Eel Tempura, Lobster and Sweet Corn Tofu, Hokkaido Scallop Orange Clam, Squid with Uni - This was their seasonal appetizers. All very good. The lobster and sweet corn tofu was the most unique thing on the plate. Also the presentation was so luxurious. The lobster and sweet corn were in a vessel like a jewelry box. - Unagi with Foie Gras, Eggplant Puree, Plum Sauce - Wow did the foie gras ban get lifted or was this an imitation foie gras. It definitely had the delicious fattiness I have not had since the last time I went out of state. Yum what an unexpected treat. - Hairy Crab & Baby Crab - Dinner and a show. Chef brought out a basket of live baby crabs next to a big hairy crab to show us how fresh the ingredients are. Delicious. - Grilled Japanese Abalone, topped with Hokkaido Uni, on a Japanese Mountain Yam Puree - I really enjoyed the yam puree. The abalone was a little tough but I enjoyed the flavors. - Sashimi: Snapper, Bluefin Tuna, Yellowtail, Salmon - A bit basic, but decent quality. The wasabi it came with was from a fresh wasabi root. - Steamed Barnacles - What a treat! Definitely something different and interesting to try. It was like a chewy clam taste. I enjoyed it as a novelty item but I don't need to hunt down more barnacles. - Steamed Aname Fish with Veggies and Finished with Dashi - The fish was a bit tough but the vegetables were skillfully and artistically prepared. Dashi was clean and fresh. - A5 Wagyu with Broccolini and Baby Corn - Nice fatty and tender. - Nigiri: Halibut Flounder, Shima Aji, Ootoro, Black Sea Bass, Kinme Dai, Kanpachi - Also pretty basic. The one thing I commend is that the chef scored all of the fish to allow it to better absorb the sauce he applied and give it that extra softness biting into it. - Miso Soup - There was mushroom in this version of a miso soup. - Hokkaido Uni Handroll - Chef offered an alternative for those who do not love Uni, but we love Uni. - Panna Cotta - The taste of the panna cotta was perfect, but the consistency was on the watery side as if the panna cotta has not fully set. Also the fruit accompaniments were random and not necessarily well pairing I think the strawberries alone would have been fine. At the end of the meal you have the option to add additional sushi items if you are still hungry. I don't think my boyfriend was full, but he was being polite. I was pretty content with the portion of the meal. However I'm not sure it was worth the value spent on the meal. I would price this meal around $4-500 total including tax and tip. Overall I feel like the service was in compliance in the sense that my water was refilled, and dirty plates were removed... but I wouldn't say they were friendly or personable like similar business types in this experience category. Celebrated our anniversary and my birthday dinner here. It's a very small place located in the LAB in Costa Mesa. It's blended into the background pretty well so might be hard to find at first especially since the sign is fairly small. I think it only seats 14 people max. They told us the service can last anywhere between 1.5-2 hours, but luckily we went on a weekday and no one else was sitting at the tables so it only took us an hour which was great. It's 10 courses including appetizer and dessert. The price is decent for the omakase experience. It's not the best I've ever had, but pretty close to it. Small and intimate environment with the chef in his element choosing to service his favorites to the guests. Was looking forward to trying out this Michelin starred restaurant. I admit that my partner and I had high expectations, and unfortunately the food wasn't to our taste. I've been to omakase before and I enjoy eating a variety of sushi. I like seeing the chef make special dishes and explaining each ingredient in a thoughtful way. Hanare offers a unique omakase, some dishes with traditional sushi pieces while others are more creative. Some are cooked and some are raw. This creates an interesting dining experience. However, I felt that some components, like a cold strong miso-tasting purée, were not to my palate and yet were repeated throughout the night across multiple dishes. Every dish had high quality ingredients, from silky smooth uni to fresh, delicate crab. However, I simply didn't enjoy some of the dishes. I personally didn't like the strong contrast between hot dishes, to ice cold dishes, to cool dishes. Eating cold raw seafood and then transitioning to a warm steak and then cool sushi was something I didn't expect. Again, this is no fault of the chef or restaurant - everything was prepared well ; it just was not to my liking. My favorites of the night were the seared wagyu dish, the abalone dish, and the sushi itself. The dessert , a panna cotta with strawberries, was also a standout! I could eat that everyday; it was refreshing and an excellent way to end the meal. Service was incredibly attentive and kind, and the waitress explained every component of the dish. Ambiance was intimate and cozy, and the building itself feels like a hidden gem. At $250 pp, I wanted to be wowed by the meal but the food was ultimately underwhelming. read more

Had reservations for 5pm on a Thursday evening. Kindly greeted us upon check in and food allergies/preferences verified before the experience. 8 seats at the bar for this omakase dinner. Had a wonderful time as we watched each dish get carefully prepared and plated. The chef explained each course and where it was sourced from. Great variety of flavors from each course. Service and quality were stellar! Highly recommend adding this to your list! $250/person for this 10 course omakase experience; not including tax and gratuity.
