I can't believe I've never been here. My friend told me about this place the other day and we finally came in to try it out. We were surprised to see there is indoor seating available. They will check your temperature before being seated. We got the pan fried dumplings. The chicken wings with the hot and sweet sauce option. Wings are pretty juicy and tender. The Japchae which taste amazing with the bulgogi style sauce and finally the Budae Jjigae which came with its usual sides it also had spam, sausage and several other toppings. It was a bit spicy but no exaggerated but still enjoyable. Everything we ordered can feed four to five people. Big potions too. I ended up taking the leftovers. We were here on a Saturday. Came here for lunch on a Wednesday at noon and there was no wait, but more tables started to fill up by 12:30. I've been here in the past for Shabu Shabu and enjoyed it, so I invited a friend here to try it. The Hancook Special Shabu Shabu is a great deal ($40, serves two people) and is very filling! It comes with two broths, one meat, and two sides. I wasn't sure if there would be enough meat for two of us, but there was a generous amount included and we were very full by the end. We got the Korean Miso and Kimchi broth, with pork belly. The miso broth was delicious. I would actually give this place 4.5 stars if I could- minus 1/2 a star because the hot tea they served us was just plain, lukewarm water, the sauce bar was missing a lot of serving spoons, and we waited a few minutes for anyone to acknowledge us when we came in. I wasn't feeling the all you can eat but I'm so glad there's the option of Hancook special shabu shabu, which was the perf amount for 2 ppl! Comes w/ 2 soup bases, 1 meat and 2 sides. You can also add meats ($10) or seafood ($5). It comes w/ rice and a variety of veggies, and you can grab your own additions at the condiments bar (sauces, kimchi, egg, dry seaweed, green onions, etc). We ordered the pork belly and added extra for blade steak (not pictured bc we forgot to take pics opps..). Super filling and def a good option if you're looking for another option that's not all you can eat. The staff were attentive and provided great service! This used to be my favorite hot pot & kbbq spot. I'm not sure if management changed recently but me and my partner had been coming here for years and we don't see familiar faces anymore. We went recently and although we aren't ones to complain much, it smelled so so soo bad. It reeked of wet dog or something, the smell was overbearing. We tried to thug it out bc this was my favorite spot, but the food disappointed. The fried chicken tasted very off as did the spicy bbq chicken and bulgogi. The AYCE hot pot was good, but all the other factors made us feel queasy after visiting. I hope they take this review to heart and make changes bc they lost loyal lifetime customers :( read more

Better than some other hotpot places I've tried. Just keep in mind that the "sausage" is NOT a sausage it's a HOT DOG! I hate hot dogs but ended up having to eat it all. Also they should really put up accurate signage for the toppings station--I thought the black and white powder was sesame seed powder but it was actually salt. Had I not tasted it first I might have ruined the whole broth! Please fix the signs! This place is a hidden gem. I've gone here for years and it's so nice that they offer an AYCE option for hotpot. What i really love is that included in the AYCE you can get a side order of grilled BBQ. We ended up getting the pork and it was amazing. Sauces, veg bar is limited but just enough for what you'd need in a hot pot. Pricing is fair. I would definitely keep coming back time after time. Service has always been very great too. Only a couple times i had to wait for a table but most times i don't. Parking can get a bit tough too since there's a lot of businesses in the area. read more

This is my go to kbbq place in Berkeley! The service is so fast and they added some things since I've been here. They now have a sauce bar to make your sauce and they now serve grilled food as well as hot pot for the AYCE. It's usually pretty chill inside and we have a good time eating here. read more

I've never ever given a one star review to a restaurant on Yelp but the experience of my friends and I tonight was extremely disappointing. We stopped by here on a cold winter night and hot pot was the perfect thing after an afternoon of sports. We were seated in a minute and decided to get all you can eat for 5. Knowing we ordered AYCE the server reminded us that any uneaten food would be an additional charge.(this would be ironic since we would not even get enough service to be full, by a long shot..) After 5 minutes we got the meats which cannot be cooked without soup.. we didn't get soup until 15 minutes later, which was strange. But an acceptable start because hey, the food was really good! so we put in another order after our first serving. We waited awhile and ate the veggies in the meantime, briefly confirming with the server that our food was on the way. After 10 minute from then we put in another order of two appetizers and confirmed that "the meats are coming". After FOURTY SEVEN minutes since the first serving we asked again for the server to "check on the order" and he seemed to understand until he returned with the actual check and placed it down in front of us.... One of my friends who I've never seen angry became very frustrated with the server who had given us the check when we didn't even have any food.. he then inquired about the food and not the literal check, in which the server replied "what is your order?" ..the same server who had told us earlier that our food was on the way. So we gave an entirely new order which arrived in 10 minutes(the ultimatum timeframe given by my friend) with really tasty appetizers and some decent meat. The soup had boiled down to just an inch or two but we still mostly enjoyed the food... Still, it had been one hour and thirty minutes for just TWO orders of food(a total of 1 squid, 5 beef, 1 pork and 4 appetizers). Mind you there's also a 2hr time limit. Some other tables were getting acceptable service too, including those seated after us.(but not all were AYCE) We paid and promptly left. $200 for just two small orders of food at AYCE is an absolute horrible experience. It was a really bad waste of time. I felt bad for my 4 friends that had to drink the actual hotpot broth because of the lack of food. It should NOT take 45 minutes to get refrigerated cuts of meat onto the tables, they aren't marinated or prepared in any way.. the whole point is that the customers cook it! Come on. We were greeted after 2 minutes and were left to wonder what they had said.... We got sat down and server took a while to come ask what we wanted to drink or anything? I loved everything about this place! The food is incredibly delicious and the portions are huge. Came to celebrate a friend's birthday and we had made a reservation but even on a Friday evening it wasn't crazy packed. We didn't get the hotpot rather we got a bunch of dishes to share but there wasn't anything we had that I didn't like. The Bulgogi is chefs kiss as is the Korean fried chicken. Came here on a Friday night and it gets busy, along with parking out here. We have a party of 4 and just went in on the waitlist which only took about 20 minutes before getting seated. We didn't do the shabu option but we decided to order things on the menu. We ordered the rose rice cake-- pretty heavy and spicy, we also got chicken wings (so good), and the Korean army stew which is like kimchi stew with sausages, cheese, noodles, tofu, and cheese. The meal comes with Bonchon and we asked for some extra rice. One of our friends ordered food to go, they do the braised Kalbi torched with cheese that's like $80 and super heavy! I didn't get to try it but it sounded so good. Great spot to catch up and service is quick, all your traditional Korean bar food. Everything looked so good, it's pretty hipster in the inside and you feel like you're in Korea. EXCELLENT FOOD, horrible service. This was some of the best Korean food I ever had which is the only reason this place gets 4 stars. The kimchi tofu soup was so rich and yummy. It really hit the spot. My bf had a great bimbimbap as well. The servers were so inattentive and the place was really disorganized. No one checks you in when you arrive, you have to write your name down on a list and there's no instructions. Once we were seated after a long wait, we were never checked on and we had to tag down a waiter every time we needed something including utensils. Ordered takeout lunch from here as we both were craving Korean fried chicken. I ordered the large chicken wings with the spicy sweet sauce and large Korean fried chicken plain. Pick up was easy as I was able to find close street parking. I like how they separated the restaurant for one side dine in and the other for pick up orders. Trying both of the fried chicken I was disappointed that the crust was not crispy. The plain kfc was easy to fix putting it into the oven. But the chicken wings was just soggy due to the sauce. Oddly, The chicken wings had a lot of breading on it compared to the kfc. The wings were a good size though if you are hungry. The spicy sweet sauce was ok. I think I preferred the plain as I could apply any sauce of choice to it. Ordering the large size for both between 2 people is a lot of food. It served both as lunch and dinner. Before I explain my rating, I will caveat that I think I just came on a server's bad day. That being said, I wanted to rate the experience for how I felt on that day. The server I had was atrocious and please know that I don't just throw that word around easily. We would speak politely to her and she would either reply curtly or simply look at us to acknowledge she heard and then return with whatever we requested (ie. refill of hot tea, the check etc). Feeling unwelcomed would be an understatement. The food though, was great. We had the seafood pancake, spicy tteokbokki, and the hotpot set for 2. The hotpot traditional broth was great but the kimchi broth was a little too spicy for our liking. Overall, I would say the food quality is great- especially the seafood pancake which was crispy but the service makes me hesitant to come again. This is my #1 favorite hotpot place in the area! I literally come here for dinner maybe every two weeks or so and my first time was in the beginning of March. I've probably been here to eat 7-8 times already. I used to be more of a KBBQ/JBBQ girl but Hancook changed that for me completely. The restaurant gets fairly busy for dinner and depending on the day and time you may have to put your name on the waitlist but I have never had to wait when I've walked in. Parking near this establishment is all street parking unless you manage to park in the small plaza across the street. Ordering and portions: The AYCE menu lets you choose two broths and in your first round of orders, 3 meat portions and 2 appetizers. I usually order the AYCE over the normal shabu menu and between my boyfriend and I we're able to eat 6 orders of meat before getting stuffed, 7-8 if we skip out on appetizers. For some additional fees you can upgrade to All You Can Drink (does not include soju) or add the cooked bbq entrees to your AYCE menu. The broth also can get refilled as much as you need. Every time you order any hot pot menu it always comes with a tray of complimentary veggies as well including cabbage, mushrooms (white and I think they're enoki but the thicker ones), spinach, firm tofu, and fried tofu skin. I think there's some other things on there but I don't really eat them so I can't remember what they are. You are also given a whole pitcher of water and in a metal container there are your tongs, chopsticks, napkins, spoons and a ladle. My favorite menu items: My favorite broth is the Mala broth - you will love this broth if you're a fan of Szechuan flavors and spice. Usually my boyfriend orders the Soft Tofu broth for our other option and it never disappoints. I never really order the noodle options but I do usually get a bowl of rice. As for protein, I always get beef belly, brisket and sometimes pork belly. Hancook's corn cheese is to die for. I am not usually a corn cheese enthusiast but theirs is so cheesy that I can't miss out on it each time I go! I also recently tried the Korean fried chicken in the soy garlic flavor and it is so crunchy and savory. If you're a fan of Bonchon soy garlic wings you'll definitely love Hancook's. The sauce bar has a lot of staple options and you can go for refills as much as you need to. My personal favorite sauce combo is sesame sauce, chili oil and sesame oil with cilantro and green onions. I also really enjoy the Ssamjang/soybean paste. Service: The service every time I've gone to Hancook has always been spectacular and all their employees are so sweet. During my very first visit my boyfriend and I didn't realize that there was an AYCE menu and we had ordered from the normal shabu menu. Because everything we ordered was also on the AYCE menu, we asked if we could switch over but we also understood if it was not possible. After speaking to the manager, our server let us know that they could in fact honor us for the AYCE menu instead. Also during this first visit, our stovetop wasn't heating up for a while despite a few of the servers coming to check on it but my boyfriend and I didn't mind, we just thought the broth was taking extra long to heat up. When our server noticed how long it had been without the broth coming to a boil, he brought us a serving of galbi on the house! It was such a nice gesture and the galbi was amazing as well. The servers come by pretty often to check on you, and if you ever need to flag them down there is a call button at the table. Overall review: All in all I love this restaurant a lot and will continue to come back time and time again. I love coming here on the days I need a pick me up and I crave the hot pot here all the time. I also constantly recommend Hancook to my friends. Looking forward to being a regular here! read more

Came here Saturday for a bday dinner we all wanted something filling and warm so Koarean BBQ it was. They set up an outdoor seating area with a roof, net and heaters, we sat outside for our dinner. To start things right and get the party started we ordered Calamsi Soju (never tried it and it was pretty good) and also did the Osipseju. Ordered the Hancook Special Shabu Shabu for two which comes with veggies. Got the Spicy and Chicken Garlic broth. For meat Rib eye, Pork Belly, Fish Fillet, corn and dumpling. Did a separate order of Kimchi Fried rice and Gal Bi Tang. This was perfect for 3 ppl to enjoy and eat. Everything was really good we enjoyed it and had a great time. I highly recommend making reservations ahead of time and go a bit early to find parking. Luckily it was not busy for us and we were able to find decent parking. read more

Ordered the beef tofu soup from here and it was amazing!! I loved it. However, I had to cook extra rice at home because the portion of rice they gave me was pretty small. I also loved the side dishes, especially the fish cakes, kimchi, and bean sprouts. I ordered the japchae too, which was good but I had a slight issue with it--it was listed as vegetarian in the UberEats description, but came with beef in it. Other than that, the food was good. Delivery via UberEats was reliable, but the restaurant doesn't exactly follow notes/order details closely. Not too big of a deal, but still a bit frustrating. Considering the fact that Hancook has generally high reviews, I was expecting to be wowed by this restaurant, but unfortunately, I was not. Perhaps other reviewers participated in the "all you can drink" program here before writing their review, but I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone who can tell the difference between good Korean food and bad. The banchan (side dishes) were either bland, soggy, or borderline sour. The bibimbap toppings were underwhelming and did not include the typical Korean fare. The dukkboki (spicy rice cake dish) was too sweet, though it was cool that I could eat it bubbling on a hot plate on the table. Ordering the BBQ beef ribeye cube rice bowl was a mistake; the "cubes" were flat, overcooked squares of brisket soaked in butter, which pooled at the bottom of my bowl, making the rice essentially inedible (see photo). My table did not partake in the AYCE shabu shabu, but the Hancook special noodle dish was the relative best dish we ordered. The glass noodles were thick and chewy, and the broth was not as oily as the beef cubes were. Our server did her best to attend to our table, through the restaurant seemed short-staffed like many other businesses during this time in the pandemic. One of the main motivators to give a two star review instead of a one star review is that everyone received a half-frozen yogurt drink when the bill came. Bottom Line: I think you can find better places to eat healthier Asian food in Berkeley than Hancook. read more

Hands down, the best Yookgaejang (spicy beef soup with glass noodles) I've had in the Bay Area. The Dol Sot Bibimbap was delicious as well! We ate out on the dog friendly patio and had some Terra beer with soju. Fun Tip: Titanic is a fun game to play while waiting for your food (and during the meal of course): Fill a glass 1/3 or 1/2 full with beer, then sit a shot glass on top. Each person takes a turn pouring at least 1 drop of soju into the shot glass and the person who makes the shot glass sink chugs the glass. Gotta wait 3 seconds after a pour before it's the next person's turn. Have fun! read more

One of the standout experiences with Hancook was dining in and making their Hancook Special Korean Wraps! I really enjoyed being able to make my very own wraps using their colorful ingredients. It was a first for me! I've also had their bulgogi rice plate for takeout, which was really delicious and filling. On my most recent takeout experience, I was intrigued that they had a shrimp bibimbap so I decided to try it! For $45 for a budae jigae, my foster dog, friends and I came hungry with high expectations! OK, maybe just my friends and I did. Hancook set up an outdoor seating area behind the neighboring restaurant with a roof and insect net, and a waiter promptly seated us there. Our budae jigae and Korean fried chicken arrived within 10 minutes of ordering--very impressive. Hancook batters the KFC in a batter I don't remember ever having before at a Korean restaurant, and it was surprisingly good. I think it's somewhat comparable to beer battered fried fish. Coming out freshly fried and accompanied with a Mayo-based sauce and sweet/spicy chili sauce, this fried chicken would be a solid staple here if it weren't $18. That's just a bit high for the portion size, compared to other local Korean gastropubs that serve KFC, in my opinion. The budae jigae is pretty much worth every dollar of the $45. Mandu, thinly sliced pork belly (maybe jowl?), the can meats (hot dog and spam), tofu chunks, instant ramen (for the price though would appreciate two instant ramens), two bowls of rice, and flavorful banchan. Plenty of soup, which balanced that meaty stock flavor well with spicy. As a fan of the $39-ish boodie at Tin n Pig and the $30-something boodie at AZIT across the street, I came with high expectations for the boodie here given its higher price tag. I was pretty satisfied with the large portion here--I just wish it had one or more things that most other boodie places have, like ground meat or rice cakes. Our waiter and another waitress checked on us pretty frequently too. Overall: flavorful Korean gastropub fare served quickly by nice waitstaff at somewhat higher prices. TL;DR - A solid option for AYCE in the Berkeley Area, though definitely moreso for Hot Pot rather than KBBQ. Came by on a Wednesday Night right at 6:01, a minute after their happy hour ended. However, service was very kind and still applied the deal, which was much appreciated. The restaurant wasn't very crowded when we first arrived, but as we ate, got more and more packed throughout the night, so definitely try to arrive early if you can. We got the Happy Hour Deal for AYCE Hot Pot ($33 per person), which included two broth flavors, and a solid of selection of meat, though you can only order four at a time. However, that was hardly a problem, as even with that limitation, the fast service means that you can get a neverending stream of meat at your table. However, most of the best meat is locked behind the Premium menu, which is about 7 dollars more expensive per person. Even still, their brisket + beef belly was quite well marbled, and their cheese corn and korean fried chicken (soy garlic) are definitely worth ordering. For the price, with how expensive other places are getting, I'd say Hancook is a decent experience, and I'll be returning next time I'm craving some all you can eat hot pot. read more

This is my new favorite Late Night Korean place in Oakland! You always hear about Dan Sung Sa or Azit, but this place is unique and different. I came here on a Saturday night for dine in. We got seated right away by a nice waitress. I wanted some soup that day. They offer all you can eat Shabu, but my boyfriend and I wanted to just get the regular Shabu for two people. You can choose 2 broths, 1 noddle, 1 meat, and 2 sides. I got the Korean Miso Broth (Savory), Spicy Broth (mild in spice, super good for dipping meats in), Rib Eye (tender!), fish balls & wide noodles. With the Shabu also comes veggies: tofu, tofu skin, cabbage, mushrooms, and bean sprouts. The food was great and warmed by stomach! I would definitely recommend the Shabu set for two if you don't want all you can eat. I like that they also have a call button. I had to press it because our conduction plate wasn't heating up correctly. The waitress moved us to the inside plate and everything was fine! Overall great food & service. Food was good, as always. We were a group of 6 and when I got the check I noticed a $45 Service Fee (with that exact name). I briefly had remembered something about a gratuity being automatically when I had looked at the menu, but since we're not usually a group of more than 4, it didn't sink in. Below the $45 Service Fee (not labeled as a gratuity at all!) was a tip section with suggested tip amounts. I noticed that the suggested amounts were not based on the pre-tax, pre-service-fee amount. In fact, they were based on the after-tax, after service fee amount, which is just .. maybe illegal in some way? Embarrassingly, I was essentially duped into paying twice what I would ordinarily pay for a gratuity. I blame myself: I only figured it out later and didn't want to create a fuss at the table, but beware... look carefully at the check. read more

Wow. Finally a bomb spot for galbi tang in the bay!!! Was always envious of galbi tang in ktown in LA and was sad there wasn't legit galbi tang in the bay, but now there's Hancook. Flavorful, clean broth with tender, off the bone oxtail and delicious clear noodles. Also love the selection of banchan! This will be my go to spot if I want to eat in Oakland.
