Food was decent but the service was not great on my trip. Don't get me wrong, I have lots of leeway for stuff but damn we sat for 20 mins in a near empty restaurant. Truth was the staff seemed more interested in closing up than waiting on us. No utensils were ever giving to us even after they dropped off the bahn Chan. We had to hit the bussing station ourselves. Then we get entrees before the appetizers. Two soup based dishes got delivered without spoons. Starting to get the picture? We asked for tea and literally it was just hot water. Soon tofu comes and I always look forward to the egg, but this was not part of the service. After the entrees come out appetizers follow about 10 mins later. The food wasn't bad but overshadowed by our service. The wings have a very heavy sticky sauce. No one bothers to see if we need napkins. So meh.... read more

First and foremost, I have to start with that Hancook is a hidden gem for sure. Food and service is good for the price. First time, I had the hotpot and I ordered a few different appetizers and I really enjoyed their Korean garlic fried chicken. The korean pancakes are also very yummy as well. Second time, I did both the hotpot and the K-BBQ and I was very surprised that they cooked the bbq for you, which I loved. Like I said, this restaurant is a hidden gem. We have tried eating at this spot three times in the last week. Each time, it appears that there is just one person working both the front of the restaurant, the waitressing, and the cooking. This person appears very overwhelmed, and even though there were open spots to be seated, they were so overwhelmed that they simply could not get to us. Yesterday we made a whole date around eating here. We called ahead to make sure that we would be able to secure a seat without a problem. We arrived 10 minutes later and no one was available to seat us for 15 minutes. Then when someone appeared to help us with getting seated, they said they couldn't get to us any time soon. I know things are not normal now, and we do hope to eat here sometime in the near future. Hoping they can hire more people soon so that we can have a great lunch soon. read more

Came here twice (outdoor dining). Both times I went when they open so I won't have to deal with the crowd. Bothe times, we were the only party in the outdoor dining area, which was nice. Great job with the outdoor dining setup. We did half and half broth and the AYCE shabu/hotpot. Love the kimchi broth. Didn't really try the other broth. The meats were good and depending of which meat you order. There's one beef that I ordered, it was a little on the tough side. I don't know what fish was the fish fillet but it went really well with the kimchi broth. The appetizers were good too. Love the potsticker and the fried chicken, which I only try one of the flavor, delicious and moist. I think good amount of options on the menu. The only one I think I wish they had were fish cake. One thing was a little odd to me is that they put everything, including the cook appetizers in baking pan. read more

We came here on a Saturday night and it was not crowded. We got seated right away, and service was very attentive and polite. We ordered the chicken wings, japchae, and kalbi combo. It was enough food for 3 people. The chicken wings were more on the fatty side, the japchae was good, and the kalbi combo was a nice deal. The combo came with a tofu soup, lettuce, rice, and sides. Tofu soup is always good anywhere you go. We also got free tea, banchan, and Yakult for dessert. If you get here before 7pm, you get 50% off appetizers. And if you write a review, you get 10% off. AYCE Shabu - we chose Chicken Garlic and Korean Miso base and tried almost all of the proteins. All the beef came at once and after going through it all, we found some were tough and others tender. When reordering, we asked the server which ones were tender and he didn't know :( so we had to experiment on our own. Unfortunately, none of the Shabu stood out; the quality of proteins were average, the sauce choices didn't go with Shabu and oddly an hour later, the soup was still bland even after all the veggies and meats that were cooked in it and the broths reduced! For appetizers, we did enjoy the green onion pancake (pretty spicy and a large order), corn cheese (also large and cheesy) and the chicken wings were delicious (5 pieces). . The service - horrible. We were seated for 20 minutes with no menus ... already mentioned the unfortunate lack of training servers receive given meat question above and there were only 2 servers in the dining area who host, wait, serve and clean up. I came here with family (party of 4) and really enjoyed myself tonight. The staff was very welcoming and their outdoor setup actually looks pretty inviting. I especially loved the nice touch that the patio heaters bring in terms of ambiance and lighting. We all order the AYCE Shabu Shabu. We started with the Spicy and Korean Miso broth, Brisket and Pork belly for the meat, Clams and Shrimp for the seafood, and Corn Cheese, Green Onion pancake and Kimchi pancake. You can't go wrong with the corn cheese and pancake appetizers. It's an amazing way to set the tone for dinner. Both broths were fantastic as well. The spicy was the perfect amount of spice, and I enjoyed how it got a little spicier as the night went on. Then going over to the Korean Miso was refreshing after having a spicy broth all night. My biggest problem was the pork belly. There was so much fat on it that I had to essentially cut off 80% before I can put it in the pot. I'm happy to enjoy the fattiness in the meat, but this was by far overkill. We ordered it a second time to make sure it wasn't a one-time instance but it happened the second time as well. If this was right, I could have easily given this 5 stars. 2 gems that caught me by surprise, the Assi yogurt drink in the end and the music that was playing all night. These small details were the highlight of my night. The yogurt drink is a pleasant taste to cap off my eating experience. And I loved the edm/today's hits that was playing. Overall, I'm sitting between a 3.5/5-4/5 but I enjoyed myself enough to give it 4 stars. Would I come here again? Most likely not. We hadn't been there since they changed the menu to focus on AYCA, so were a little set back by having previous options removed. No printed menus now, either, so all menu-looking was on our phones. Food was good, as always. We were a group of 6 and when I got the check I noticed a $45 Service Fee (with that exact name). I briefly had remembered something about a gratuity being automatically when I had looked at the menu, but since we're not usually a group of more than 4, it didn't sink in. Below the $45 Service Fee (not labeled as a gratuity at all!) was a tip section with suggested tip amounts. I noticed that the suggested amounts were not based on the pre-tax, pre-service-fee amount. In fact, they were based on the after-tax, after service fee amount, which is just .. maybe illegal in some way? Embarrassingly, I was essentially duped into paying twice what I would ordinarily pay for a gratuity. Hancook is located in a busy neighborhood with an abundance of restaurants and hard-to-find parking (I usually park along Telegraph since it's better lit than the residential parts of the area). The restaurant itself is pretty popular and gives a bunch of options for food for parties of all sizes. I have yet to try bigger meals, but the last times I was here I mainly had their chicken, which is crunchy and packed with flavor (the yang nyum and garlic soy are the BEST!). I've also had the soft tofu soup, which is perfect for a dinner on a cold night (I like getting it spicy). Staff here are really chill and helpful, and the venue offers a space that is energetic (probably best for nights out with friends). I really like how Hancook manages to keep a loud and vibrant atmosphere, and I look forward to trying more dishes here! read more

Just ordered $80 of takeout and had to put most of it in the trash. Hot pot had a horrible burnt taste and was over salted. We felt sick after eating a small amount. My bbq chicken bowl was also burnt and gross. Low quality everything. I'm used to great Korean food in Vancouver, this is really bad. Pre-covid, I had a great lunch here with a few friends splitting the bo ssam and other Korean bbq (not AYCE for once). The meat was juicy, service attentive with any requests for extra lettuce or banchan, and it was a clean atmosphere so you didn't feel like the surfaces were sticky from dropped marinades or sauces or walk out smelling like you napped in a smoke spit. At Taste of Temescal, Hancook had my favorite booth, showcasing their new hot pot specials with a wide array of broths. I was so impressed with what I sampled that this was the first time I didn't order bbq at a Korean restaurant and we just stuck with hot pot. My eyes and mind are bigger than my stomach, so I wanted to do the AYCE for more variety of meats and side dishes. Fortunately, my dining partner talked me out of it. The regular portion for two is more than enough food - although I am still disappointed we only got one kind of meat and the extra charge for any others you would want seem disproportionate to the value. We ended up being able to take home a large container of broth. As we were ordering, the server told us that the mala batch was no good. I was disappointed because this is consistently one of my favorite broths. We went with spicy miso and another one that was so unremarkable I cannot even remember what it was. Appallingly, the serving of udon noodles they brought out was a still-frozen rectangle that had been just removed from its package. I appreciate the loads of vegetables they gave us, but was shocked that there was no banchan. I had to ask for some kimchi, and it took so long in between servers coming out that I wasn't able to ask for anything else. No one checked on us the entire time that we were eating. I had to get someone's attention to come help us reignite the grill, and later to get our check. As we walked out, we were told to go out the back way because of an issue with the bathroom flooding. I was unsurprised to hear this, since the bathroom was definitely neglected when I went, and very likely to have been clogged what with the waste strewn about. read more

Took 10 minutes for us to be seated when there were several empty tables and service overall was not that quick. There were only two and later on in the night three waiters who were running around to try and serve everyone + manage takeout orders. We tried the all you can eat shabu shabu for dinner which was $30/person and had a bit of almost everything that they offered. It was SUPER good and everything was so flavorful. They also had a button you could press to call the waiters over which we had to do a handful of times since they kept forgetting our order. Couldn't make the trip to my usual ayce hotpot and I heard great things about Hancook so I decided to finally see if it could become a staple of restaurants I go to. My friend and I got the traditional and spicy broth so that we could give the basics a try. While we waited, we both made our sauces from the sauce bar. My personal recommendation is using some sesame sauce, chili oil, soy sauce, green onion, garlic, and yuzu. Along with every cut of meat they had, we ordered some corn cheese, Korean fried chicken (sweet and spicy, soy garlic), and japchae. I've had my fair share of KFC but Hancook's is on a whole other level. It's crunchy while keeping the inside moist. I'm probably coming back just for the KFC if we're being honest. Ok, enough about the KFC. All the meat cuts were fantastic and had large portion sizes so you don't hav to order too much. The highlight was definitely the wagyu, which absorbed the broth and the fatty content gave a great umami flavor. They have all varieties of Korean food inclusive of the traditional soups, hot pot, and cold wraps. Don't expect to have Korean BBQ at this locale. We ended up ordering the AYCE wrap for 2 people. This was a subpar order- would not recommend. Please take this off the menu, timing for items was so awkward. We got the wraps, veggies, and sat around for the meat.. but no dips. Asked for the dips and then no kimchi noodle soup either. The whole combination was awkwardly timed. Service was slow, butSee below pictures as they give the food a picture more than words alone. Timing could have solved one issue, but secondly the food was at just a normal level , nothing that stood out for a wrap dish. What took me sooo long to find Hancook! I'm a fan!! I got the jap chae and pan fried dumplings. Both were soooo delicious!! You can taste the fresh ingredients, and both were cooked perfectly. The pan fried dumplings were lightly breaded, so you can really taste the yummy filling. The mixture they make is addicting!! I ate 8 and could have had 8 more lol. Great restaurant to eat at! The service was one of the best I've ever had. The staff immediately brought out the side dishes after ordering and also provided us with cold water + hot tea. I've been here many times and all the dishes I've ordered here have been great as well. I'm not the best with spicy food so I typically steer away from that but there are still plenty of things to choose from for us non-spicy eaters. The portion sizes here is a lot bigger than what I usually get at a normal Korean restaurants. I recently ordered the Kong Sam and there was so much food. After you finish the meat inside the Hot Pot, they take the remaining soup and veggies and make fried rice with it (this was my favorite part). Unfortunately, I couldn't finish it because the portions were a bit too big so I decided to box it and take it home with me. Overall great place to eat at with friendly staff and good food. Came here to find an alternative to Daeho that's closer to Oakland. The galbi jjim had a nice sweet flavor, but there was way too much cheese on top. The meat pieces were Y-shaped bones which made it a bit hard/awkward to eat. But the meat was very tender. The galbi tang soup had a nice mild flavor as expected and they gave 3 bones which had a decent amount of tender meat as well. The wings had a good flavor and crunch but were a bit oily. Also we noticed that the food was kind of warm instead of hot with the galbi jjim and galbi tang, which was a bit disappointing. Service was great and very friendly. read more

The kimchi soup was a bit spicy which we liked, and the chicken garlic sort of just tasted like miso to us, but was still good. The only thing I'd say about both flavors of soup is that it's on the saltier side, and gets more salty as you keep eating. When asking for a refill on the broths, most hotpot places would just pour in hot water or regular pork broth, but it was super cool that Hancook refills your broth with the same flavor that you already have; it maintains the flavor of the soup :) I also love that they have many choices of appetizers which is also included as part of the AYCE. We got corn cheese and japchae. The corn cheese is very sweet, but we loved it. The japchae was a bit too salty for me, but was still edible. Our server Amy was very kind, polite, and took great care of us. She's always paying good attention to her tables making sure all our needs are met! Amazing customer service from Amy.
