On a beautiful, sunny Sunday we went for brunch. Parking was a bit of a challenge & checking in was confusing. We reserved patio & went inside to check in but we're sent back outside. The drink selections were great but I went bottomless mimosa (if you have 2+ it's worth it). Service was attentive but not rushed. The food was amazing! A delight to all the senses, the Handsome Hog delivers on all its promises and reviews. Wait staff are hard working folk that all deserve a raise. The cook staff should receive nonstop high fives for the quality of food they produce. The decor is fantastic as well as the tribute to Rick flair up at the bar. If you want to find out, just ask the staff. Overall, this was one of the best meals I've had in St Paul. The pork is to die for. Falls off the bone. Succulent beyond belief. Just...it's so good this reviewer can't think of any descriptive adjective to do this food and restaurant justice. Last thing: DO NOT PASS up dessert. The squash bread pudding was undeniably the best puddings I've ever had in my 30 years of existence. I ate here with a bunch of co-workers after my colleague made dinner reservations for our first night of our business trip in Minneapolis. Had no idea this was Top Chef alum Justin Sutherland's restaurant until weeks later. After watching him on a new series called Fast Foodies (which I'm really enjoying), it was then that I realized and made the connection. Combo #5 (Mambo #5 inspired?) was pretty good. I liked the fried chicken better than the brisket. Brussel sprouts starter was actually my favorite dish overall. They have both patio and inside seatings. We sat on the patio which was nice with the nice breeze. The drinks came come fairly quickly. However, the food took a REALLY long time to come out. We did have a party of 7 but pretty sure it took over 1.5 hours for the food to come (2.5/5). My food wasn't warm/hot when it came out and I think probably because it was sitting in the kitchen waiting for the other dishes. We lost track of time since we were catching up but our stomachs knew it was delayed. Our waitress was great on the other hand. 4/5 Hushpuppies- it was tasty. Not sure what it was sitting on time but had a little sour taste to it but wasn't bad. Chicken n' waffle - the portion is good for the price. It was a little bit too crispy that it was a little hard to eat. I probably would have liked it more if it was warmer. 3.5/5 Combo 5 - it's a huge portion but also pricey too. You get to pick 2 meats from a list. We got the pulled pork and brisket. They ran out of one of the meat so it was disappointing. We definitely had leftovers since it was a lot. BEST HAPPY HOUR IN SAINT PAUL!! Handsome Hog not only has delicious food, they also have a late night happy hour! I came in with some friends after 10:00 pm for their late night happy hour (Friday - Saturday: 10pm - 12am). Having something great late night is pretty unheard of but this place does not disappoint! The menu definitely had some standout dishes. We tried the chicken wings with smoke dry rub, the classic cubano, sausage gravy poutine, brisket sliders, and chicken salad sliders. My personal favorites were the cubano and the smoke dry rub chicken wings, both were fantastic and full of flavor, 10/10 would recommend! I also ordered a couple of their bartender's delight cocktails, which were only $6 and were amazing. I think they probably switch up the bartender's choice every night, but definitely a good option for the price of a high end cocktail in comparison to most bars. Only negative is that the sausage gravy poutine was disappointing. Normally a poutine comes with french fries, but they serve this dish with potato wedges. I wasn't a fan of it, too much potato, but that's just me. All in all I've been back a few times and highly recommend Handsome Hog to all of my friends. Great wait staff, bartenders, and sensational food by executive chef Jeff Sutherland (who has won on "Iron Chef America"). UPDATE: I came in for their mid-day happy hour on Sunday (3:00-5:00) with my family after making reservations over the phone for their patio. Great patio area and even better happy hour prices/options. New item that I tried was the chicken salad sliders, so good!! I didn't think I could like chicken salad more, but this place really does it all! The happy hour drink prices are outstanding as well, their "cheap beers" are only $3 and their house red or white wine is only $4. They had Surly on tap as one of the cheep beers and they gave a hefty pour for the wines. I loved these ribs , so tender. Brisket -the brisket is on the dry side. Came out warm almost cold. Not my favorite. Chicken -omg , the chicken is so tender. The breading crispy. Many restaurants in this location take reservations, be prepared. Staff is super nice . The corn bread with the dipping sauce is really good. I'm not sure what the dip is but it's really good though. It was finally a beautiful patio season day in the twin cities. After this chilly spring weather it was time to get out and experience patio season. I googled St Paul patio restaurants and Handsome Hog stood out to me. The rave reviews on food and drinks and the great patio led me here. Did I mention they have patio? We got that last available seats outside and it was around their fire pit. Happy hour ended in twenty minutes so we had to hurry to order off that menu. No one came to serve us, so we had to go find a server. Luckily, we were able to get an order in. You can't pass up a good happy hour! We ordered small plates. Peep the pics. All beautifully plated and ready to get in my belly. The dry rub wings were okay, nothing to talk about. They were actual bone-in chicken wings and had a little kick to them. The hushpuppies were good. You cant go wrong with deep fried anything. The garlic mashed potatoes had a smoky taste and were very dry. It needed a little more sour cream maybe. The mac was really tasty! It was a little soupy but tasted good. My favorite was the pork chili. That was delicious!! The service was a little slow but the patio was a great time. They have probably the nicest patio I've ever been to in the Twin Cities and sit in the quaint, up scale neighborhood of Cathedral Hill. My friend and I ordered Combo #5's with fried chicken, brisket, and ribs. Great portion sizes and cooked to perfection. I only wish there was a little more flavor. The fried chicken needed salt/seasoning and so did the brisket. I will highlight that they were cooked PERFECTLY. It came with corn and a corn bread muffin (kind of dry), house made pickles (good but reminded me of Vlasic), and a bbq sauce that clearly has whiskey or something in it but is very good. It was kind of chill out, and I wished we could have been seated next to the heaters, but regardless it was nice to enjoy their outdoor space. The portion was smaller than I expected -- which means it was a normal-sized meal portion but compared to the mega-portions we're all accustomed to now, I felt like I was being slightly cheated. Hands down the worst dinners we have had in a long time. Only thing redeeming about this place was the music playing and the very nice waitress. Drinks were awful. We both ordered one of the citric drinks and they both tasted purely like lemon juice and orange juice. You could not taste any of the alcohol nor were they enjoyable to sip on. Our food arrived alarmingly quick. Had us both concerned with how it was all going to taste. We both had chicken dishes where there was more chicken breading than chicken, and to make matters worse, the breading couldn't stay on the chicken to save its life. With each bite, the breading crumbled beneath our fingers or the bun. At the end of the meal, we were left with a plate full of breading. We joked that for the chicken and waffles, it was like Goldilocks - one piece was too cold, one piece too hot, and one piece was just right (and that piece was tiny of course). Mac and cheese was insanely bland and the cornbread was as hard as a rock. The biggest shocker is after the worst drinks and meals we've had in a minute, the check came out to $85+ because of the automatic service charge of 5% to pay staff. While I totally agree with that concept, with a service charge that high, the product delivery should be exceptional and that's anything but the case here. read more

The cocktails were interesting and flavorful, the mussels appetizer was stunningly good, and the mains were all good to excellent across the board. My only advice is, honestly, order fewer appetizers than you normally would. The main courses were all huge--the chicken and waffles is essentially 1/2 a fried chicken, the brisket slices were enormous, the oxtail was a ginormous portion, etc. Had we realized how large the main courses were, we would have cut our number of appetizers in half. overall, a wonderful experience and we will be back. read more

Reserved this spot to celebrate a belated birthday and I was so surprised! It's an easy going and causal vibe. Props to whoever made the playlist because it was so versatile and fit a lot of genres. It was a root vegetable salad with goat cheese which normally I would be happy with. This was an entire log of goat cheese spread around the plate like a moat with the veggies in the middle. Way too much cheese was wasted...and I love cheese! The cocktail I had was the house made tonic and gin. When our server delivered it he lit some pine needles on fire in the glass, blew it out and then waited for me to take a taste and approve. I sipped with smoke up my nose and said nice, but it was not my cup of tea. Anything about it. PS I am far far far from a cocktail snob, so it might be your jam? First off, we came here for Valentines weekend. This place seems to be a bar first and a restaurant second. So you may have to swim past the sea of humanity on your way to a table. We were seated right away (seemed they did have many open tables, but not a seat @ the bar could be had). We started with the meat platter (very good in-house meats and pickles) and the braised pig tail. If you like ham...you'll love these. Unfortunately for us, these were the highlights. Wife ordered the lobster etouffee and I had the snapper and grits. We both felt the portions were small. Did not find any lobster meat in the etouffee, but it did come with a small grilled lobster tail. Same for the snapper. There was way more grits then snapper. Went to the Handsome Hog for brunch today, exploring the city with my partner and a friend. We went there to catch up and hang out. The menu for brunch is really solid with plenty of offerings for everyone. I did see quite a few fish/seafood dishes (I'm allergic) and the server was great handling all of that. I ordered the eggs Benedict and it was delicious. We also ordered a cinnamon roll which omg always get. The only thing that was a deterrent was the open door to the walk in cooler. It had a very pungent smell which at one point had been propped open for a longer period of time. Which even the table next to us even made a comment about. We came in for mother in laws birthday. My husband had come in before and wanted us to try the brisket. Well when we were seated we were told they had run out of the smoked brisket and smoked chicken. We waited for the rest of our party to arrive to order our food. A St Paul favorite gets our visit. Drinks: The Old Fashioned. Pre-made so they quick to serve. Although, they lacked the dark cherry garnish, the drinks tasted great--and included the legendary clear ice cubes that look like glass! Starters: - Hush Puppies ($10). Five large Hush Puppies with a poblano, corn, and green tomato relish. I love Hush Puppies, but unfortunately, they over-cooked them. Sad. - Pimento Cheese Dip ($8). Yep, the pimento cheese dip that you may expect from a Cheez-Whiz can--served with packages of Ritz crackers. The cheese is good, and a blast from the past, but $8 is a little steep. Entree: Combo #5 ($30). Choose two meats from Brisket, Chicken, or Ribs. Includes a cornbread Muffin, Corn-on-the-Cob niblet, and house pickles. The Brisket has a good balance of fat and meat that provides a nice flavor. The meat falls off the rib bones, but the sauce is a little bland. I am from Texas, so I expect a little more zesty BBQ sauce, so I'll let it slide. The Muffin was dry, so I didn't finish it. Excellent. Side: Grits ($6). Smooth, perfectly cooked grits prepared with Mascarpone, Smoked Lemon, and White Cheddar. Seriously GREAT and could be the best Grits I've tasted outside of the South. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Service: Prompt, friendly, and provided good recommendations. Overall: A nice, warm place with wood tones, natural light with walls of windows, but hard to find parking. Should have listened to my gut, and to the recent reviews. This was one of the worst meals I have had in recent memory. Doll and I made reservations for brunch. Didn't need to as the place wasn't even half full at 11:00 am on a Saturday. I had the chicken and waffles, Doll had the brisket hash. My dish came with 'home fries'. Home fries were absolutely cold. I brought the dish to the nearest waiter and told him that. I got a new plate out to me fairly quickly, the potatoes were hot, but were obviously, not fresh. Dried out, no seasoning, just blah. Hardly any attention from the wait staff, had to flag someone down in order to get some more coffee. Doll's dish was hot, but the brisket was tough, from a BBQ joint??? Looking around the place, it is just a sports bar, TV's all over the place. Prices are a little high, especially for this low quality of food. Wow wow wow. So I've been wanting to go here for awhile and I was super stoked my boyfriend was up for going. The reservation process was super easy online, and I even got reminder texts! I thought this was a nice bonus. When we arrived, right of way we were led to our table. Seems like a small thing, but it does drive me batty when you go out of your way to make a reservation and you STILL have to wait. Our server Tyler was so kind, and when he heard it was our anniversary, he had half glasses of bubbly sent to our table. That was super sweet right off the bat. He was very attentive and engaging the rest of the evening. Next, we ordered the Crispy Pork Belly with the slaw. Man that was delicious! My date never had it before, and I'm not sure anything after that will compare- it was cooked perfectly and was melt in your mouth tender. We really had to contemplate what to order from the entrees! Everything looked good. I ended up with the brisket, which came with corn and a lovely BBQ sauce, and he got the combo #5, where you pick from a choice of 3 meats, and he got the brisket and fried chicken, and it came with cornbread and corn as well. We ordered the collard greens and the mac and cheese as additional sides. Right when our food came to the table, a group from a Wild game had entered through a side door (probably was intended for summer patio entry) close to our table. Tyler was kind enough to ask the group to close the door so as not to make a draft. I really appreciate his thoughtfulness by making this seemingly small request. It's rare that you witness a server sticking up for their currently seated customers. Last but not least was their Banana brulee dessert. Man, was that tasty! I am having a tough time writing this review. I want to start off by saying that I think it was a bad night for the restaurant. I will start with the negative: 1. It took 2 hours to get our food to the table 2. When our food got to us the brisket, Mac and cheese, and grits were cold. Not warm, they were cold! 3. The Mac and cheese was super disappointing. It was watery and bland. When they say there are hot Cheetos in it. It means there are a couple on top for garnish. Onto the positive: 1. Our waitress was very accommodating and took one of our meals and appetizers off the check for the wait. We really appreciated that and thought that was very thoughtful. This is one of the reasons I'm having a tough time reviewing this place. 2. Cocktails were 10/10. I had THREE of the "never tell a bear where the honey is." I would go back for that drink. The rest of my family got the #dope and they thought it was one of the best drinks they have had in a long time!! 3. The pork chop was very good. It was HUGE and incredibly juicy.
