Everyone at work was talking about this place (along with its write-up in the LA Times) that I wanted to check it out. I am not a bagel snob...I rarely eat them, so I don't claim to be an aficionado. All I can say is I've had beef jerky that's easier to bite and chew. At first I thought my bagel might be stale, but I don't think that's it - I swear I thought I was going to lose a tooth, and Hank: these are my grown-up teeth. If I lose one of these trying to bite into your food, I'm in large trouble. When eating, I was told "you look like a cow chewing your cud." Well, these bites did last a while. This is a small bagel shop with some outdoor seating. It is a little difficult to find parking since they are on a main street. The bagels are very chewy and airy. I came here after dropping my girlfriend off at the Burbank airport and was absolutely blown away!! Honestly the best bagel I've had in LA. I didn't even get it toasted or anything. Just a rosemary se salt bagel right off the shelf with a side of cream cheese and it was DELICIOUS! I can't imagine how good it would've been toasted with the cream cheese melting into it. I wanted to hangout there and eat, it was a lively place and you don't see too many people frowning when they're eating bagels this good. They had a ton of options which is super nice too. That NY Times article about California having better bagels must have been written by a Cali stoner because there is no way a level headed New Yorker, hell not even a level headed Californian would agree with that. Rant over. So I decided to visit Hank's in the highest of hopes to find the "best" bagels in LA. Quite frankly, so far the "best" bagels I have had come from either Western Bagel or Costco (yes, Costco's bakery is superior to most others). I peeped the menu prior and decided to go for the No.1 but add scallion cream cheese. The menu does say "no substitutions" but an "addition" isn't a substitution, right? Right! When I asked the cashier about it, he said I could just "build your own bagel" to match the sandwich. Uhm . . . doesn't that defeat the purpose of "no substitutions". I didn't see my receipt but I'm pretty sure all he did was add the cream cheese to the sandwich because the total price reflected the "sandwich" with the "addition" of cream cheese. Just an unnecessary restriction on the menu. The wait wasn't too bad as I expected a 20 minute wait given other reviews, but coming around Friday morning at 930am, the wait was only 10 minutes. The bagel is given in regular to-go box but it's not wrapped or "secured". This causes problems with the sandwiches because they fall apart already and even picking them up let the ingredients spill out. And of course at first bite half the filling fell out into the box. The bagel itself is good. It's chewy and dense, and the everything bagel has great flavor. The ingredients are also great, but the menu did say tomato aioli but I was given sliced tomatoes...not a huge deal but I'm not sure their bagel preparers know the difference between a fresh cut vegetable and a vegetable flavored sauce. The egg was cooked nice, and the bacon was great, the cream cheese was also thick and had great scallion flavor being spread throughout the sandwich. Now this is another issue - the bagel isn't toasted, causing the above problems when eating. This isn't mentioned and although yes, maybe I should have asked, typical bagel sandwiches are soft enough (and also wrapped like a diaper) that prevent everything from spilling out. We can put aside the toasting issue, but for $12, is this bagel sandwich worth it? No way. I can get a breakfast burrito with better and more flavors and ingredients for cheaper. Is this bagel a contender for the Cali v New York bagel wars? (was there ever such a thing? Why is this a thing?) Again, no. Even if I lived or worked in the area, I wouldn't come again. read more

The bagels are the perfect balance between plump and fluffy, while having a distinct crunch from the outside of the bagel (the rosemary salt is *chef's kiss*)! I have been to hanks a handful of times. I definitely recommend ordering online for pick up. The pick up time is listed as the ordering process is simple and easy to follow. Parking doesn't exist unless it's in the opposite direction around the block. The line is always out the door and on occasion they sell out! The sandwich or flavored cream cheeses are amazing! The lox cream cheese is to die for, and is the #3 substance. I absolutely love the rosemary and salt bagel however was a bit disappointed in the everything bagel. Idk what it was but the outside was just so hard to bite into and chew. My jaw was tired! The handful of times I've been, the staff has always been friendly and helpful. I've been on a bit of a bagel kick recently since quite a few places have opened as of late, and I can safely say that these are the best bagels I've ever had. Hank's was my first meal of 2021, and I couldn't stop thinking all day yesterday; so I had to go back today, making it my first and second takeout meals of 2021. It was that good and totally worth the drive. The bagels have a delicious chewy texture but aren't too tough like some other bagels, making them perfect for sandwiches. We tried the new number two on a jalapeno cheddar which is a fried egg, pickled peppers, and braised greens breakfast sandwich. The sandwich sounded really interesting asI've never had braised greens on a sandwich before but it was totally delicious and surprising. We also customized our own sandwiches on an everything bagel and a garlic/cheddar bagel. Both were delicious but the everything bagel was sublime with the toppings all over, so both the top and bottom halves were covered. They offer a number of different spread choices and toppings. I love a good veggie bagel, so I got all the veggies. They were perfectly fresh and well seasoned but the pickled peppers really gave it a sharp spicy kick. The pickled peppers also had a lot of roasted garlic in it, making it perfect. It was possibly the most perfect bagel sandwich ever. 2021 is off to a great start and hopefully holds many more visits to Hanks. read more

We ordered a begal egg omelet and a jalapeño cheese begal with cream cheese. Interesting enough, the begal egg omelet was brought to us to assemble ourselves. By the time our food was ready, our begals were cold - the begals were not warmed up. We asked them to warm them up. The wait was pretty long, food was average, service was good but they need more staff to move this machine smoothly. I would recommend to warm the begal once the food is ready, instead of tasting then immediately and allowing them to get cold. read more

Im a huge bagel lover, and I've heard great things about this place but I was honestly pretty disappointed. I ordered 2 build your own bagels. My boyfriend's bagel came with a hair in it. Also, I had asked for the bagels toasted, but these were TOO toasted. Either that or they were just left on the counter for too long and they hardened a bit. It was so hard to chew through the bread. The cream cheese and nova salmon tasted good but it was hard to eat bc the bread was so rock hard. Employees were nice, and they offered a refund for the bagel with a hair in it. And one good thing is that they offer mobile ordering so you don't need to wait in line. However , i probably wouldn't come again. read more

Aside from it being overly expensive, their bagels were chewy rather than the way a good bagel should be. DELICIOUS! Loved their lox bagel! (Order #3) It is definitely a must try if you love lox. I love the addition of sprouts, pickled onions, and dill.. so different from your usual lox bagels but so delicious! I thought it was a little pricey, but overall it didn't disappoint so I'm not complaining. I was able to eat a half for breakfast and the other half for lunch because eating one half was already really filling. So worth the price if I get two meals out of it!! Let me start by saying I love love love this place and eat here all the time but today will be my last day ever ordering from Hanks because I ordered via DoorDash for pick up. It said my order would be ready at 1:56. I arrived at 1:52 and they have their closed sign on their door. The restaurant doesn't close until 2 PM so I should've been fine to pick up my order but now I'm out $24 that's right you heard me I paid $24 for sandwich because I love this place. I got to say it. I'm disappointed. For my first time here and a bagel lover. I found my bagel sandwich to be overly salty by all the pickled vegetables they had. The pickled onions, cucumber and the capers add more than enough salt to the sandwich. The bagel it self rather being soft and crunchy, was tough to the bite. Your jaws get a good workout in chewing the bagel. When biting down on the sandwich, the filling all comes out and now you got yourself a bagel and cream cheese. Good amount of salmon. Mmh, I reallly reallllly wanted to like Hanks especially since, it's so close and I had such expectations. My coworker would not stop talking about this place and I really wanted to check it out. Slow Saturday morning, hadn't had breakfast and I was in the area so, what a great time to try it out. I got the # 3 Hank's special with novo lox and the works, with an everything bagel. I'm not a huuuuuge bagel lover but, I can enjoy a lox and bagel every once in a while. The bagel, I requested scooped and still feel like it had too much inside, the bagel was super chewy and hard to bite through and there was so much jam packed inside that all the fillings would spill out. I really enjoyed the juxtaposition between salty, a little sweet and salty again but, that wouldn't be enough for me to want to come back. Plus, it was 19$! Dollars which was too expensive for a bagel sandwich, I only ate half and will either keep the other half or throw away to be honest I ordered for pick up so, I can't really comment on the inside of the cafe but, I liked that the outside had chairs and tables to sit on and enjoy, and the person who helped me was super kind (and super cute haha) I wouldn't go back on my own but, if a friend wanted to try it maybe I'd get something else. The bagels are really delicious. The ones with seeds or grains are coated generously with them. The catering tray with the bagel accoutrements was good though some of the items were a bit too salty for me (cucumbers) and the alfalfa sprouts were just a tad past their prime. Went this morning (Thursday 6/25) to pick up some bagels....2 dozen to be exact ;-p I'm so happy that we're able to walk in and purchase bagels. I like going in and picking what I want/what I'm in the mood for. Today I got....plain, onion, everything, everything jalapeño cheese, salt, sesame, and cinnamon raisin. I also got the angry cream cheese (for the first time). It has bits of fresh habanero peppers in it. Nice and spicy! I couldn't wait to slice one open and toast it lightly and schmear cream cheese all over it :-p so for my afternoon snack I did just that! I split the everything jalapeño cheese and an onion with my hubby and we were in bagel heaven! SO good! I gave some bagels to friends and kept 14 for me n the hubby (which I put in the freezer). I didn't find parking in the street but that's ok! They have parking in the back. Then you walk through the gate and through the cute little outside courtyard/patio where you can sit and eat if you'd like. And it's doggy friendly :-) :-) :-) It's really cute. This is my second time at Hank's. First time fell flat. I don't remember what I got to be quite honest since it wasn't memorable. I remembered my boyfriend was NOT impressed, he even stopped eating his bagel last time. But I was very DISAPPOINTED. "Build your own" they said. I did not swing my bag, my little salmon bagel was my baby. I picked up my bagel, everything was falling apart... like did you even build the bagel or did you throw everything into the box and call it a day? Everything was falling apart and I had to rebuild my own bagel. A simple toothpick to hold everything together could make the difference. It was very messy eating the bagel in my office; I ended up having to scoop avocado and cucumber with my bagel "spoon". My bagel... fell flat, not toasted, a little too chewy. The bagel was amazing. I love the flavor in it. The egg was cooked perfectly. We also split the number 2 on an egg bagel. It was delicious. The greens and the peppers were such a great combinations. If you want the world's best cheddar garlic bagel, you've found it! This is one of my top two places to get breakfast in the valley. And I only say that because they only serve my favorite bagel on the weekends. Usually one bagel fills me up ($5ish), but you can add toppings or just get a sandwich. This is one of the few places that I actually bring my book to and relax outside while eating. I usually have no problem finding parking or a table. But the biggest thing, and I cannot stress this enough is to order ahead. The wait times get long on the weekends. Also on another note - BYOC. I personally do not like the coffee here, so I bring my own or stop on the way. But if you're in the area, stop by! The service has always been spectacular. read more
