Very charming local diner, a draw for Brandywine residents and visitors alike. It gets super busy on weekends, and it's easy to see why. It is a no-nonsense greasy spoon sort of place with local culture and history embedded in the walls and in the seats. The coffee never stops flowing and you can sit at the bar and watch as your potatoes come off the griddle, or sit at a table and smell them as you salivate. I got a simple order-- 2 eggs, sunnyside up, potatoes, and I upgraded my toast to a grilled muffin (by special request), and it was all fantastic. East coast diner fantastic, the kind of food you just can't get too far from the Atlantic. It was a little hard to get the wait staff's attention for requests like hot sauce or glasses of water, and cash only is definitely an inconvenience. My sister and I decided to give Hank's one more try, as we've been coming here for 25+ plus years. Recent visits left us wondering whst happened to the kitchen. I will only comment on my breakfast -- 2 eggs, sausage patties, and potatoes, and coffee. I didn't order toast. Eggs were cold when they got to the table; sausage patties looked like overcooked hockey pucks and tasted the same; potatoes had no seasoning at all. Service was pleasant. Sorry to say, this is our last visit. Looking for another place to have breakfast. read more

This is one of the best places to go for food in the area (especially for breakfast). The service is great, everyone is friendly, and the food is delicious. Some of the items are a bit overprices (yogurt/granola bowl) but others are fairly priced. There isn't much room to move around, but it has a very homey and comfortable feel. Unfortunately I had a bad experience at Hank's Place! The food was pretty good but unfortunately the server, Vicky, made me feel very unwelcome which made my overall experience unpleasant. I have worked in restaurants for over 10 years and while working in the customer service industry servers should not be rude or short tempered with guests. I am hard of hearing and unfortunately did not hear Vicky and when I asked her to repeat herself she snapped at me. I was holding back tears for the rest of my meal. read more

This little gem has definitely exceeded my expectations. The Corned Beef Hash is bursting with flavor, the Creamed Chip Beef is exceptional, the Omelets are done to perfection. And that's just breakfast. The lunch specials look fabulous and all the diners looked quite happy and thoroughly enjoying their meals. The service is exceptional, friendly and attentive. Came on a Friday for lunch on the way to Longwood Gardens, and called before to confirm they served breakfast all day-- they said yes, and left it at that. Once we sat down, we learned that they serve a very limited breakfast menu all day (just French toast, omelettes, and maybe a couple other things). Not the corned beef hash, which we had gotten once before and really liked. We got a small fruit salad to share, and it was mostly honeydew and cantaloupe, and some mushy grapes. Not so good. I ordered the mushroom omelet, which was cheesy and pretty decent. Not great, but not bad. The potatoes it came with were actually pretty good, with crispy potato stuff. My mom got the gyro, and she said it was just okay. Overall a fairly blah meal. The service here was alright, the waitress was nice enough but I felt it was somewhat lacking. I doubt I'll be back-- I'd much rather try a different place. read more

If you run a restaurant which only accepts cash, the back page of the menu is not the best place to announce this fact. If your menu offers "fountain drinks," and customers ask for "root beer," this is a perfect opportunity to tell them that in addition to the regular drinks which come with free refills, you offer a considerably more expensive bottled root beer which does not. Your default should not be to bring opened bottles of the most expensive beverage on the menu to people who have just discovered that you are a cash-only establishment. And soda with no refills ought to be accompanied by a glass of water without a special request. Cheesesteak comes with onions, peppers, and fries. If you plan to violate this basic precept of civilization, you should say so right on the menu. Quiche is a dish which may be served hot OR cold. Not both. This is the United States of America; when I order coffee, it should not take three people to flag down a refill. If my cup is empty for more time than it takes to drink a cup of your lukewarm brew, there's an issue. Wait staff ought, occasionally, to visit their tables. Or at least to make eye contact with their diners without the prompt of an empty cup being waved like a sad and caffeineless flag. The "award winning" mushroom strudel was, indeed, quite tasty. And also roughly the temperature of lava. The salad was reasonably fresh, with a respectable house dressing. The "chicken cheesesteak" was pronounced "delicious" by my 13 year old, and may be the first sandwich that has ever filled him up. My wife did manage to eat her quiche, despite the icy cold center. Not a restaurant I would recommend. If, however, you find yourself stranded in Chadd's Ford before 7pm and forced to dine at Hank's, get the strudel, and ask for a glass of water. read more

Despite growing up less than 15 minutes from Hank's, I had never been here before last weekend! I met two friends here for brunch around 10:30am on a Saturday. The parking lot is pretty tight, however somehow I managed to grab a spot, and so did my friends. The double parked cars concerned me when I first parked, but at some point I realized that the staff were parked on the lawn and I didn't need to worry about it. Hank's is bigger on the inside than I expected. We managed to get a table within 2 or 3 minutes, but that was because we agreed to sit at a 2-person table with an extra chair on it. The waitress took our order quickly, and our coffee cups ($1.99) were quickly refilled throughout the meal. I ordered two eggs sunny side up with hashbrowns and bacon and rye bread ($6.75). The waitstaff moved quickly and efficiently, but nobody rushed us when we stayed a bit longer to talk after we were finished eating. When we left, there was a long line of people waiting to sit down. They serve breakfast until 12pm every day, but all day on Sunday. Overall, a great diner-like place with cheap food and delicious breakfast. Two thumbs up! read more

Love all the flowers they have outside the restaurant, and this past time when I went, they had a lot of beautiful basil plants growing amongst their flowers. I think Hank's is famous for their corned beef hash, which IS really good, and their other food is great too. Lots of good choices! They also have really good cheesesteaks! There is a garden patio,though we chose indoors.Like stepping into a 1940's diner.We grabbed stools at the counter,to be immersed in the atmosphere! Have been here many times. Today I ordered the mushroom strudel. Very disappointing. It was meh. Made fresh, plentiful portion but both flavor and presentation were below average. I was so excited when I found out Hank's was moving to Kennett and have been several times. I will say that the dining room is lovely. It is very open and decorated nicely. Perhaps my hopes were too high because I found the food only so-so. Breakfast was nothing special and expensive. A lunch Reuben was barely more than a regular sandwich. I've been craving a really good breakfast and lunch spot and, sadly, Hank's is not the place. While it is a nice spot to meet with friends, but I'd prefer a spot that also provides great food. read more

Hank's is a place you go more for the ambiance than for the food. The food is solid but not spectacular, and probably $1-2 more than it should be in most cases. Having said that, there's something about Hank's that just makes it feel like 'home' in the idyllic sense of the word. The staff and crowd are super hospitable, and it's a great place to just go and marinate over a stack of pancakes and a cup of coffee. That's worth something. In fact it's worth a lot. Also, the coffee is phenomenal. Nothing fancy, just really great coffee constantly being refilled. read more

It looked so good; I was drooling. Back to our meal. Extensive menu that goes on for pages. That should tell you that you should stick to the specials or the basics. The exterior of this place is beautifully decorated with local flowers. The interior reminds you of an old country style kitchen that needs updating. The line for this place is long on Sunday's. The breakfast here is great. Reasonably priced. We had the bacon, egg and cheese sandwhich, two eggs scrambled with bacon and homefries and cream chipped beef with two over-easy eggs. I tried everything.... yummy. Two chocolate milks, orange juice and coffee. This made my travels from S. Philly to Chadsford very pleasant. I shall return with fellow collegues and family to brunch my breakfast food cravings. read more

Decades of Wyeth painters have patronized Hanks - a wonderful stop for breakfast or brunch. The most imaginative omelettes, waffles and pancakes, often featuring mushrooms from nearby Kenneth Square. You sometimes have to wait a while on Sunday mornings, but it's well worth it. Prices re reasonable and the place is fun to visit. super disappointing experience. we were told it was a 15 min wait, wound up waiting an hour and didn't get a table until we went inside again to inquire. waited more than an hour for food as we watched tables around us arrive, eat, and leave before us. cherry on top was the hair i found halfway through my sandwich. manager blamed us for not asking the waitress for another (my bad, didn't know i was expected to scan for hair before eating) and then said we were expected to call ahead for parties of 12 or more. We stumbled on Hank's while heading toward Harrisburg. It looked like a cute, local country-style diner that served tasty, affordable eats, so we pulled in. Hank's had nice country-style decor and fast service, but the food was sadly and surprisingly under par considering the positive newspaper clippings posted up by the entrance. I expected dynamite local food served with passion and taste and sadly got neither. Service was on-point. The waitress knew her business and managed the whole floor solo. Our coffee cups were topped off at least twice, never falling below the half-full mark. Maybe Hank's is used to serving people who are in a rush? The food came fast - too fast to heat it properly.I expected some piping-hot, delicious country diner fare to land in front of me. Instead, two plates of what surely was microwaved, lukewarm food were on the table in under five minutes.The biscuits may have been house-made, but they didn't taste like it. They were cool, dry, crumbly, and did not come close to melting in my mouth. The beef chip country gravy was decent, not out of this world, and like the rest of the food, lukewarm. The hash browns were more yellow than brown, and though they were the last thing we got to eating, they were so cold by that point that I feel justified in saying they were just as lukewarm as the rest of the food when they arrived. Overall everything was bland needed a good sprinkling of salt. The only redeeming element of breakfast was the mushroom and cheese omelette, which was appropriately-warm and had a rich, savory-sweet taste. Nonetheless, the omelette was quite small compared to similarly-priced (and frankly, tastier) omelettes I've had from other breakfast dives, like Annamarie's Place in Royserford, PA. The staff didn't notify us that payment was cash-only. Even if there was a posted sign saying this, it's 2017 and most people presume to pay with card or phone, not cash; the staff should have said something up-front. Instead they directed us to the ATM in the back, from which they are surely collecting commissions on withdrawals. At best Hank's is collecting ATM commissions to help stay afloat, at worst they are pocketing extra cash because they can. In either case: it's the 21st century, y'all! Accept plastic, cook better food, and stop playing games with passers-through with this cash-only nonsense. Walking in, I was expecting to give Hank's 4 or 5 stars. The country-style decor, clean restaurant, on-point waitress, and newspaper reviews were unfortunately deceptive. Hank's needs to rediscover their passion for tasty food and learn to take their time to serve up the fresh, authentic fare their old reviews and decor promise customers. Hank's also needs to enter the 21st century and accept plastic. I'd be willing to give Hank's a second chance, but they'd really need to up their game. read more

Upscale hole in the wall restaurant with beautiful hanging baskets, decent food, and almost always lacking on customer service. Most of the waitresses are "no bullshit" kind of women and once in a while you'll get a sweet and friendly one like you'd expect from looking at the exterior. On weekends and holidays, expect to wait in line and if you have more than a party of 2 or less than 8 people, it'll be a challenge to get an appropriate table. Walking space is quite limited, so if you're on an aisle side, expect to be bumped into by other patrons. They're cash only, but offer an ATM machine near the restrooms. You'll need to ask for appropriate change to tip your server as I've always had to do. Otherwise, you get a $10 & $20 on a $20 order from your $50 single bill. I've been here numerous times and am just done with the lack of attention to detail, small tables you can barely fit the condiments and plates onto, and the waitress roulette. read more

This is a real neighborhood eatery for the locals. Both times I went there was a large crowd waiting to get in. That says it all. Food is adequately priced, portions are large, and the quality is superb. Everything from sandwiches to breakfast, it looks and tastes good. Try the grilled Reuben for one of the best sandwiches you'll ever have. Sitting at the counter also allows you to watch the cook in action ad he slings food at an eye-popping rate. read more
