My husband found this place because someone from work brought malasadas from here and he told me "they're legit better than the ones from Hawai'i". They are. Tasting these makes me want to compare them to Leonard's - it's been too long. If you're a big fan of ube, these have a hint of it, but I understand how expensive and laborious it would be to make the cream have that big flavor. We also tried a couple combos with garlic chicken and kalua pig. I thought the flavors were solid, and the crispness of the chicken remained even with the sauce covering it. My husband regretted to ask for the sauce on the side - he wants the crunch to be audible I guess. The tender kalua pig went perfectly with the side of rice - not gamey but reminds me of smoked pit pulled pork. The space inside is humbly decorated with enough seating for groups of 4-6 people. I noticed most ordered online and left with goodies to go. Considering the care and effort clearly presented in the food we received, service was great. There were three guys behind the counter getting through the numerous to go and sit-in orders, all with enthusiasm and sense of pride. The food was absolutely delicious and very filling. The kalbi was juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly--not dry at all. The garlic shrimp was also excellent, with a generous portion and great taste. I loved the entire plate and felt it was well worth it. The only minor downside was that I couldn't get through by phone to place my order, likely because they were very busy. As a result, I had to order in person and wait at the restaurant instead of simply picking it up. That said, the food more than made up for the inconvenience. This place has been on my bucket list for a long time, and I finally got a chance to try it! We ordered two mixed plates so we could sample a few different protein options. The garlic shrimp was easily my favorite, it was garlicky, the shrimp were jumbo-sized, and they were cooked perfectly. The kalbi was a little more charred than I prefer, but it still tasted great and paired well with the kimchi. The garlic chicken portion was very generous, and crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside. The kalua pig was definitely on the saltier side, making it a total "rice killer." I also absolutely loved their mac salad, I think there might be some meat (bacon?) mixed into it because it was way more flavorful than the mac salad you get at other Hawaiian spots. I also came specifically for their filled malasadas. We tried one of each flavor at $3.99 a piece, but they were surprisingly small. It's probably not worth ordering them individually compared to buying a half-dozen or a full dozen box. That being said, they tasted great, so I wasn't too upset about it. I've been here twice so far. The menu is simple, sticking to the classics and focusing on fresh, well-made Hawaiian dishes. No frills, just good food. The staff has always been super friendly, and the place itself feels welcoming. On one visit, there was a bit of an unusual moment with a guest's dachshund ate inside on the table and the staff came up to pet the dog who licked their hands and what not, it caught me off guard more than anything. It didn't seem like a service animal since they're trained to stay under the table, so it's probably worth keeping in mind that non-service animals are allowed at this restaurant. Love this place. Thank k goodness they finally opened one closer to my house than Mesa. We had the garlic chicken and the combo Kalbi and garlic shrimp. Absolutely some of the best Kalbi I've had in Arizona! The rice was cooked perfectly -- fluffy, moist, and the perfect complement to every bite of beef. The macaroni salad was delicious, the kim chee had great flavor, and the malasadas are definitely a must if you want something sweet to finish your meal. Service was good and welcoming throughout our visit. My only wish is that the restaurant was a little bigger to allow for more indoor seating to enjoy the A/C comfortably, especially during the Arizona heat. My grams and I drove 30 minutes to try this place and we were not disappointed! The prices are very reasonable, considering the portion size that you get, and we were blown away with the taste. It took about 15 minutes to get our order, but when it comes out, it's piping hot so you know that it's fresh and ready to eat. We shared a combo with shrimp and ribs, and then got an additional side of Mac salad and rice. We also got a six pack of the malasadas and I'm literally dreaming about them. The rice was cooked nicely and the kimchi added a nice kick of acidity. We did also order 6 filled malasadas (3 each custard and ube) which were good but maybe a little overfilled. Next time I think we'll get to regular (unfilled). We were greeted as soon as we walked in and she said she'd be right with us. As we stood at the counter looking at the menu, one of the cooks also said someone would be right with us. This was appreciated because it means they pay attention to their customers. And it didn't take long before someone came to take our order. The entire time we were there, everyone was working. There wasn't anyone just standing around. The interior is a bit bare, but clean. And I don't need a fancy interior with food this good. We did get ours to go, but there were tables and some other customers dining in. I am a huge fan of garlic, so the piled amount of garlic on the shrimp was good for me, probably my favorite entree is Garlic Shrimp. Garlic Chicken was almost lacking enough garlic and crispness, sounded better than it tasted. The Kalua Pork is excellent, flavor, aroma and tenderness is very good. I am just not a kalua pork favorite. Malasadas were very good, tried the regular, Custard and ube. Custard was my favorite, then regular. We have had the favorite Oahu. Malasadas from the island a d these are just as good. Biggest complaint was the macaroni salad, I absolutely love macaroni salad and this misses the mark, dont know how to describe but a little to creamy, maybe the mayo was not to my liking, just didn't do it for me. Small restaurant and happy workers, just for the locals. Get the garlic shrimp, Custard Malasadas, don't over cook the kalbi then get that. read more

Wow! I'm surprisingly pleased. I was so hungry after a rigorous morning workout and just wanted protein. My boyfriend found this on yelp and suggested we try it. Sooooooo goood and hit the spot. It also comes with plenty of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. Rice was good, no complaints. Macaroni salad was good, however I'm not a macaroni salad person (it is very mayo forward) but I'm sure it hits the spot for macaroni salad lovers. The main show of course was the beef riblets. They were so tender, flavorful (great flavor!) and ample amounts of meat! I ate every piece of meat! So satisfying. We ended with ube malasadas. I've always wanted to try these. I know they are specialty treat well known in Hawaii and originated in Portugal. Combine a deep fried yeast based donut treat with one of my faves ube and rolled in sugar, and I'm down. It definitely was a guilty tasty dessert treat at the end for me. I would have it again Definitely recommend! Bring your appetite! It is a lot of food! Popped into this place today for lunch after finding it on Yelp. Located in a small strip mall right off the 51. My goddaughter and I both enjoyed it here. I got the Kalbi & Garlic Shrimp plate and she got Kalbi & Kailua Pork. Each one came with Mac salad and plenty of rice, as well as some kimchi. Kalbi was perfect - there was no struggling (if you know what I mean) and the shrimp definitely sent me down memory lane of my Hawaiian trips. Hapa Food has only been open a couple of months, but they're already serving up some seriously tasty plates! I ordered the Kalbi & garlic chicken, and my boyfriend got the Kalbi & garlic shrimp. The Kalbi was the star! It was tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The garlic chicken was also delicious, and my boyfriend liked his shrimp, though we both thought it would've been even better if the shells were off so all that garlic goodness could soak into the meat. Since they're new, they don't have fountain drinks yet (hopefully soon!), and the water cups were on the small side with water that was a little warm. Not a huge deal, just something to note. Greatly marinated kalbi ribs sitting on a big bed of rice. Side of kim chee with enough heat & added crunchy texture. The macaroni salad had the right consistency of mayonnaise. The zest I honestly didn't care for. Most local people from HI, like myself, can do without the added flavor. Unless there is a hint of tuna or finely chopped onions, staying true to how the locals keep it simple with this, in my opinion is best. But still, like I said previously, I ate it all.
