I have a *slight* (haha) soup dumpling habit. A trip to Vegas or LA and I will go to Din Tai Fung every day. I was super happy they opened up in the valley... but it is so hard to get a reservation and it is very spendy. You can image how thrilled I was to discover Happy Bao's and their awesome Xiao long bao! They are tender and very, very flavorful. The broth inside is superb! Are they the same? No. But they ARE great in their own way. They have more broth and are slighlty larger than I am used to. That said, they are still one bite and so tasty! Also, less expensive and closer to home! Wins all around! My only regret is that I couldn't finish them at the restaurant as I wanted to try other dishes. Also got the spicy chili wontons. Not too spice and the filling is very flavorful. The pork flavor was almost like sausage flavor, but not sausage... hard to describe. I also ordered the beef chow fun. The beef was tender and the overall flavor of the dish was yummy. The noodles seemed a tad overcooked, but i did really enjoy it. As I was dining alone, I had lots leftover and am looking forward to sharing them with a family member for lunch tomorrow. While visiting Phoenix, we met with some local friends for lunch. It was very yummy! Didn't realize they'd just opened this location in the spring. All of the food we had was delicious! They were sold out of chicken and pork soup dumplings, so we settled for seafood. The cucumber salad was my favorite- the garlic was so tasty. I would honestly say it's comparable to Din Tai Fung! I was very excited to find a location for this restaurant in North Phoenix, much closer than the one I go to down in Mesa at the Mekong Plaza. Ordered some house fried rice, which is my favorite. I love their dumplings, but I was not in the mood for them today. Will definitely be back to this establishment at this location on Union Hills. One thing that was a little odd is I sat down and waited longer than I would've expected to place an order. It tastes even better with it. It's not overly salty, which is always good. Kiddo ordered Lu Ro Fan and hated it. I tried it, it was fine. She just wasn't a fan of the textures but said flavor wise it was fine. You get a good size portion of food, there's a lot of flavors. I actually liked it and would eat it again. The only thing I thought could improve was having a softer boiled egg. It was fully hard boiled, just shy of getting the gray color on the yolk. Service was okay. Nothing to complain about, nothing special. You order from a QR code at the table. The dumplings were very mid. The wrappers were so thick. So happy they have one now closer to my house. Everything on the menu looked fantastic, it was hard to choose. We went with the classic Xiao Long Bao and wow I will be craving these. The Signature Dumplings were cooked perfect with great flavor. The Pork Wonton Noodle was so refreshing and such a simple dish that wasn't heavy. I'm not a soup dumpling expert by any means. But I've tried Happy Bao's in Glendale twice and I can understand the hype. Their food isn't fancy, but it's definitely comforting. I preferred the regular pork soup dumplings to the seafood ones. The seafood ones had a faint echo Szechuan peppercorns in them which I didn't like. My husband really likes their spicy beef noodle soup. This location doesn't have the lamb soup even though it's on their printed menus. Each table has a QR code that you use to order and once you've made your selections, someone comes by to confirm your order. You can also place your drink orders with them when they come to confirm your order. When you're ready to pay, you confirm that you want to pay via the ordering system. Then someone comes with your check. The restaurant is smaller but the staff is quick to clean tables and set them up again for the next customer. When you arrive, utensils, napkins, and plates are already on the table. They're quick to bring out a small container of refreshingly cold ice water and cups while you peruse the menu. read more

I read all the reviews on Yelp and decided to stop in. I love pho and thought this would be similar but I think it's more Chinese focused. I could be wrong as I am still learning the difference between the cuisines. The service was fast and attentive when we arrived. I ordered the spicy beef soup and some spring rolls. The spring rolls were good and the soup was spicy. I think there were different parts of the beef in the soup which through me off. I became squeamish seeing the tripe and tendons. It's listed as spicy beef soup and it doesn't mention the different types of meat in it. I tried to eat around it but it was most of the meat. I ate the spring rolls and took the rest home to not be rude and waste the food there. The flavor was there but the meat was a no for me. I am over the moon to have another authentic Chinese establishment serving food I grew up with and having it close to my home. This location has been on my personal wishlist for some time and finally made my first visit over the weekend with Hubby. My only regret for this visit was not ordering more dishes to try. Hubby and I only ordered entrees for ourselves. They are perfectly filling and absolutely delicious. Hubby got the Hong Kong Fried rice while I had the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup. Hubby described his dish as porky heaven with the inclusion of bacon and BBQ pork. Mine was beefy heaven - they were generous with the beef and true to its name, it was a little spicy. I would say it was a 2 to 3 on a scale of 5. Service was very minimal. You order through scanning a QR code at your table and staff will just drop off your drinks and order and take your payment. This is great if you like being left alone. If you are someone who likes more attention, this could be strange. The space is very casual and small. Perfect for solo diners, couples, and small groups. Large parties will be difficult as it is a small space and I would recommend calling ahead to see if they can accommodate. I can't wait to go back and bring more family and friends. read more

These dumplings had a thicker breading, similar to a regular bun. Toasted sesame seed bottom. We chose beef. With the Bao Sauce, very delicious. Chinese BBQ Pork Fried Rice was very good too! Unfortunately, we had their beef noodle dish, I can't even tell you what it was because I didn't bother to take a picture of it. The noodles were gelatinous. No joke, terrible texture. However, they asked us how things were and we told him we didn't like the beef noodles. And without us asking, they just took it off the bill. Went here yesterday for a quick workweek lunch. It was tasty and fast service. The inside was clean and presentable. My boyfriend has the beef chow fun and it's not pictured but he approved and was a very generous proportion. I had the shrimp chow fun which was very good. Seasoning was perfect. You have to order it vegetarian style and then add shrimp. It is $6.00 extra for 4 shrimp but I was okay with because of my temporary pescatarian diet. We also had the vegetarian bao buns with the toasted sesame seeds and wow! It surprising good especially for being the vegetarian option. Flavor was spot on and texture was good. This place is a hidden gem. Mouthwatering food. It looked so good and I forgot to save the photos from snap. The spicy chili wantons were the best, so good we had to get round two. We got the Hong Kong Fried Rice, Beef Chow Fun, Xiao Long Boa, and Pan Fried Boas!! The Beef Chow Fun that is legit (with work-breath (hei)). The pan fried Boas were so good but incredible filling. This place is going to need a larger space! What a delightful find when searching for a place to have dinner. The new, clean space is located in the same parking lot as Asiana Market. Dined here on their Grand Opening! Guess they worked out the bugs during their soft opening as service was friendly and efficient! Of course I had to order the XLB and it did not disappoint!!! This alone gets a Yummos rating! The thin skinned dumpling had a very abundant amount of soup. I like putting my XLB in my soup spoon to avoid losing the soup. I was very impressed as each XLB did not break! The only negative is that I prefer the red XLB sauce, but that is just my personal preference. I was told the beef noodle soup (#21) was very tasty with a lot of noodles, beef tendon and baby bok choy. Would order both items again. I want to try the Roujiamo (#20) if I am ever in the area as it is a dish I have never tried. Visit during Happy Bao's grand opening and maybe you can score some giveaways. I was so excited to try this place. It was the 2nd night open. There was a wait list that they ignored. Place is small and tables were crowded. Once we got seated it started out good - until I got what was supposed to be my seafood soup dumplings. They brought me chicken..."corrected it" and brought me chicken again. Both times treated me like I was lying about it - even though the picture of the chicken on the menu was the same as what I got both times. The rice of lu rou fan was too mushy, as a Taiwanese, I didn't think it was a good lu rou fan. There were several chucks of beef in the beef noodle soup, it was nice, and we ordered spicy but not spicy at all. The shen jian baos were okay, there were veg, pork, and chicken, the bottom was so crispy and the bao itself was good, but I don't think they should be called as "shen jian bao" they're just small baos. I came here with family and ordered a couple of dishes, some of which included the spicy potato wires, vegetable sheng jian bao, and the red bean bao. It was my first time trying something like the potato dish, I personally didn't care much for it. The spice isn't too bad but I wish there was more flavor. What a wonderful thing it is to finally have this on the west side! Swung by on a Tuesday at 6pm. Pretty busy, but we were seated right away at the remaining few tables. I just wish we got soup spoons because after the 4th one, they were getting stuck to the pan so they would rip and the juices would drain out. Baos- crispy sesame bottom. Full of meat. Cucumber salad. Now this was MY FAV cucumber salad I've had anywhere. . I'll even say it's better than DTF. Cucumbers were fresh and crispy. The sauce was the perfect balance of salty and sweet. Other places tend to be heavy on the vinegar but not them. The only regret I had was not ordering noodles. Everyone had some kind of noodle dish. So next time, we will try a couple noodle dishes. We walked in and the place was jam packed. We signed in on the tablet to be added to the waitlist. The restaurant moved quickly and a table was up and gone before we knew it. I ordered Xiao Long Bao and vegetable fried noodles. Delicious, both of them! The bao were super flavorful with the broth in them. Hubby elected for the chili wontons and Singapore noodles. He loved them both. He said the heat of the chili wontons builds up. I didn't even try them, too spicy for me! He also said the Singapore noodles were super flavorful compared to other restaurants. He said he would definitely order both items again. Coming from my SO, that's something major! The restaurant itself is a little small but consistent in design with the other happy Bao locations.
