I'm not a soup dumpling expert by any means. But I've tried Happy Bao's in Glendale twice and I can understand the hype. Their food isn't fancy, but it's definitely comforting. I preferred the regular pork soup dumplings to the seafood ones. The seafood ones had a faint echo Szechuan peppercorns in them which I didn't like. My husband really likes their spicy beef noodle soup. This location doesn't have the lamb soup even though it's on their printed menus. Each table has a QR code that you use to order and once you've made your selections, someone comes by to confirm your order. You can also place your drink orders with them when they come to confirm your order. When you're ready to pay, you confirm that you want to pay via the ordering system. Then someone comes with your check. The restaurant is smaller but the staff is quick to clean tables and set them up again for the next customer. I really wanted to like Happy Bao because I love finding local spots that can compete with bigger names like Din Tai Fung, but this place just didn't do it for me. In my opinion, it's overpriced for the quality and experience. The xiao long bao was just okay -- nothing memorable. The spicy dumplings were super doughy, and the chili oil had almost no flavor besides heat. I kept expecting more depth and richness, but it was basically just spicy without the savory flavor you'd want. The beef noodle soup was actually pretty good and had a generous amount of beef, and honestly the house fried rice was probably the best thing we ordered. The ordering process was also a little awkward. You order through a QR code, then someone comes over to verify the order before it's placed. Paying at the end took way too long too -- we were sitting there waiting forever just to pay the bill. Overall, I'd honestly rather just go to Din Tai Fung. I always root for local spots or good "dupes" of popular places, but this one felt mediocre across the board. This location has been on my personal wishlist for some time and finally made my first visit over the weekend with Hubby. My only regret for this visit was not ordering more dishes to try. Hubby and I only ordered entrees for ourselves. They are perfectly filling and absolutely delicious. Hubby got the Hong Kong Fried rice while I had the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup. Hubby described his dish as porky heaven with the inclusion of bacon and BBQ pork. Mine was beefy heaven - they were generous with the beef and true to its name, it was a little spicy. I would say it was a 2 to 3 on a scale of 5. Service was very minimal. You order through scanning a QR code at your table and staff will just drop off your drinks and order and take your payment. This is great if you like being left alone. If you are someone who likes more attention, this could be strange. The space is very casual and small. Perfect for solo diners, couples, and small groups. The Signature Dumplings were cooked perfect with great flavor. The Pork Wonton Noodle was so refreshing and such a simple dish that wasn't heavy. Dan Dan Noodle was little spicy for me but my husband loved it, but it was still a great flavor. We definitely had a great lunch and plenty leftovers. We bought a spread so we could taste different things. The seafood xiao long bao was decent. Mild flavor, thin wrapper. They have a vinegary xiao long bao sauce on the table to accompany it. It tastes even better with it. It's not overly salty, which is always good. Kiddo ordered Lu Ro Fan and hated it. I tried it, it was fine. She just wasn't a fan of the textures but said flavor wise it was fine. You get a good size portion of food, there's a lot of flavors. I actually liked it and would eat it again. The only thing I thought could improve was having a softer boiled egg. It was fully hard boiled, just shy of getting the gray color on the yolk. Service was okay. Nothing to complain about, nothing special. You order from a QR code at the table. The dumplings were very mid. The wrappers were so thick. I read all the reviews on Yelp and decided to stop in. I love pho and thought this would be similar but I think it's more Chinese focused. I could be wrong as I am still learning the difference between the cuisines. The service was fast and attentive when we arrived. I ordered the spicy beef soup and some spring rolls. The spring rolls were good and the soup was spicy. I think there were different parts of the beef in the soup which through me off. I became squeamish seeing the tripe and tendons. It's listed as spicy beef soup and it doesn't mention the different types of meat in it. I tried to eat around it but it was most of the meat. I ate the spring rolls and took the rest home to not be rude and waste the food there. The flavor was there but the meat was a no for me. Wow, are we finally being blessed here in the Northwest valley. First Uncle panda bow came on Bell Road. Now we have happy boas on Union hills. I go with my Chinese friends and I thought that it was very authentic at Uncle Boa's, now they tell me I got to go to happy boa's "it's even better.". We came a they're absolute right. We love the food, I think our only complaint is is that the restaurant eating areas smaller and looks like it could get pretty crowded at times. Which makes us happy for the owner. Went here yesterday for a quick workweek lunch. It was tasty and fast service. The inside was clean and presentable. My boyfriend has the beef chow fun and it's not pictured but he approved and was a very generous proportion. I had the shrimp chow fun which was very good. Seasoning was perfect. You have to order it vegetarian style and then add shrimp. It is $6.00 extra for 4 shrimp but I was okay with because of my temporary pescatarian diet. I have been to the Mesa location many times. First time to try this location. Big parking lot. The place was clean but man it is on the smaller side (they may need a big space soon). This place is going to need a larger space! What a delightful find when searching for a place to have dinner. The new, clean space is located in the same parking lot as Asiana Market. Dined here on their Grand Opening! Guess they worked out the bugs during their soft opening as service was friendly and efficient! Of course I had to order the XLB and it did not disappoint!!! This alone gets a Yummos rating! The thin skinned dumpling had a very abundant amount of soup. I like putting my XLB in my soup spoon to avoid losing the soup. I was very impressed as each XLB did not break! The only negative is that I prefer the red XLB sauce, but that is just my personal preference. I was told the beef noodle soup (#21) was very tasty with a lot of noodles, beef tendon and baby bok choy. Would order both items again. I came here with family and ordered a couple of dishes, some of which included the spicy potato wires, vegetable sheng jian bao, and the red bean bao. It was my first time trying something like the potato dish, I personally didn't care much for it. The spice isn't too bad but I wish there was more flavor. Their menu is somewhat limited, which can be a good or bad thing depending on what you're looking for, but it's clear they specialize in bao buns. The fried rice was one of my favorite dishes very flavorful with shrimp, chicken, vegetables, and egg. We also tried their pan-fried bao and wide stir-fried noodles with beef and onions, which were both really enjoyable. The rice of lu rou fan was too mushy, as a Taiwanese, I didn't think it was a good lu rou fan. More than a few times, this place has been late by more than 10 minutes from the stated ready time when I order for pick up. This evening, they completely missed my online order. After checking that my order was placed for the right location., the front desk cashier didn't know why my order is missing so he went and got the lady in the back. The lady came up to me and asked "what do you want?" I was taken aback by how rude she was and told her " I'm here to pickup my food. Your guy here has all the details." The two then deliberated and argued for few minutes before telling me they have to remake my order. Didn't even bother telling me why my order was missed. I asked for a refund to which the lady insisted she can get it done in 15mins. I obliged and went shopping in the area before returning 20 minute later and STILL my order were not ready.
