    Chicken Lo Mein

Great portions! The chicken lo mein was delicious! The crab Rangoon had a lot of filling and was great as well.

    34. Chicken Fried Rice
    Jeff D.

I've been going to Happy Wok for my Chinese takeout for the better part of 5 years (it helps that I used to live there), and I've gotta say, they should win awards for consistent quality. In that entire time, I've been able to have such a uniform experience that I've been away for a year and a half and come back to EXACTLY what I've come to love about it. Since I've been going to Happy Wok, I've essentially only gotten two dishes: their Fried Rice and Lo Mein. Both are good but generally I float toward the Chicken Fried Rice, and even to this day if I'm going to have Chicken Fried Rice in Michigan, I'll do my best to find myself in Ann Arbor to arrange a pickup of Happy Wok Chicken Fried Rice. I'm pretty sure they have the usual fare that you'd expect from a Chinese restaurant, but seriously I stick to my guns once I find a dish I like. My one complaint is that even when ordering the dish "extra spicy", it still comes in under what I'd like as a spice enthusiast. Some basics: There's a good amount of parking in their strip-mall style parking lot (it's a one way, so just be mindful of that). Location is in a fairly convenient spot along Stadium on the west side of Ann Arbor as well. The physical footprint of the restaurant is on the smaller side, but you should easily be able to find seating for a small group (under 5). Usually the noodle/rice entrees can come in a small or large size; small is easily enough for one meal, and large is basically a meal for two people. All in all, I'd say Happy Wok is one Chinese restaurant in Ann Arbor you shouldn't skip, they excel at making quality meals quickly and consistently.

The only piece of feedback that I would give them is to be a bit more flexible to customer needs. When I ordered a dinner combination plate one night and wanted to substitute the egg roll for wonton egg drop soup, I wasn't allowed to. I emphasized I'm willing to pay extra but they responded that they couldn't because they wouldn't know how much to charge me...it was just one of those examples where it wasn't too big of an ask but they weren't open to the idea at all.

Mapo tofu - SO Salty it burns
    Grace K.

I'd rather eat Panda Express. The food was almost unedible for me, except the shrimp with mixed vegetables, which wasn't bad at all. We ordered some things for pickup, and the mapo tofu was SO SALTY it burned going down my throat (and it wasn't from the spices). The Chinese takeout boxes of rice were So teeny tiny I think it was made as a joke for dolls. Anywho, worst of all was the Sour and hot (spicy and sour?) soup that came with the combo meal that had a Bad Bad weird flavor - reminded me of feet/bad breath. Sorry, I have no other way to describe it.

Laksa with Shrimp (it was take out)
    Jason C.

For the oddest reasons, I was craving for Laksa (google it). It's been over two years since I had it for the first time in Singapore... so after doing some research on Yelp, I found Happy Wok. I went out to their website and found that they had Laksa Noodles with Shrimp... man, I was excited. So I placed take-away/carry out/to-go order... I order the Laksa Noodles with Shrimp and Beef Mongolian. The guy told me 15 minutes and it'd be ready. Happy Wok is located right across Big George, the parking lot is one way street... I had to pull into the parking lot twice, because the restaurant's sign is kinda hidden as you drive on the one-way street. It was around 1:30 pm on Friday, so I expected the restaurant to be busy, to my surprise, the place was empty... my order was waiting, I paid and headed back home. I took a large empty bowl, placed the noodles and poured the broth over it. The smell was excellent and I took my first bite... sadly I was disappointed... it didn't taste the same as the one in Singapore... I know I know, you can't compare dishes from respective motherlands in another country... Why I ordered Beef Mongolian I don't know... it seems I always order food in pairs. The dish came in a single carryout box, half was filled with pork fried rice along with Beef Mongolian... there were more onions then slices of beef... but for $5.50 lunch combo with egg roll, one can't complain. I guess I had high expectation for Laksa... I won't put Happy Wok on my back burner, will give it another try.

So far this has been the best Chinese takeout I've found in my area. Sometimes they take awhile for delivery but the food is always good.

I was pretty disappointed then but when we came around this time, I was so happy that they changed it for the weekends. The staff were all so nice and helpful. This location is slightly different- I like that the Troy location has a few extra utensils on each table (extra paper plates, chopsticks, forks, gloves). They gave us a couple extra napkins but they were pretty small (napkins used for drinks). We ordered the kimchi fried rice- which is always delicious and pretty consistent. And a medium (16 pcs) Gangnam style- our favorite. Yes, it's pretty pricey but the chicken is worth it! It is definitely better enjoyed at the restaurant, so the chicken doesn't lose its crisp. Highly recommend if you're in the mood for KFC.

From the moment we sat down, the waitress checked if we had any food allergies (their menus also have a note for people with allergies). She also let us know that it would take 25-30min for the food to come out (which is average for a korean fried chicken place). We ordered the Half & Half Whole Chicken (half golden original and half secret sauce). They have kpop music videos playing all over the screens so it creates a legit Korean restaurant environment. The golden original was good and had a good crispiness to it. It stayed hotter longer when it was brought out. The secret sauce was my preferred flavor. I liked that it was sweet tasting and the texture was crunchy too. Both chicken platters came with radish and it had good flavor and cut up to a good bite size. The owners and waiters checked on us a lot.

We ordered 3 large cheesesteaks, 2 fries, and cheesesteak rolls, plus paid extra for add ons like cherry peppers on the side. Not only did they forget the extras entirely, but the "large" sandwiches were a joke. They used bigger buns and apparently decided that counted as a larger sandwich, because there was definitely not more meat. In fact, the meat barely covered HALF the bread. We literally have to cook extra meat at home just to turn these into actual cheesesteaks. And the cheesesteak rolls? The menu photo shows four halves. What showed up was ONE roll cut in half. That's it. The curly fries were the only thing remotely worth the money. Charging extra for every tiny add on while simultaneously skimping on the actual food (and the addons) is wild. If you're going to charge premium prices, at least put enough meat on the sandwich to justify calling it a cheesesteak.

Maybe a mistake based on what I've been reading. Or that's the norm for here. It's a bit pricey, but it was a pretty big sub. I think we'll be back on our next romp through Ann Arbor. 10/25
