Absolutely wonderful restaurant! A locals' favourite and for good reason. Pleasant ambiance located on the marina. They serve the best fish and chips West of York, England and quite possibly better. This will be our go-to any time we are in the area. read more

Not often you have such high expectations of a place, only to have them dashed before my eyes. I've been a fan of Harbor Fish South in Carlsbad for decades. Even going as far as still coming back out every few months or so after moving out of the city. In my youth, I had come up to the Oceanside Harbor on multiple occasions, almost always coming to the northern site of Harbor Fish when I did. The huge shark jaw on display never failed to awe and the cartoon fisherman on the walls still make me smile. Years later, with out of town friends coming to the coast on vacation, we spent a few hours at the beach and I convinced them to head into Harbor Fish with tales of loving it growing up and how brilliant the fish batter and tartar sauce was. So, we cleaned up the kids, changed our clothes, and walked back to the harbor to face the long lines and excitedly order some of that delectable food. Man, what a disappointment. The fish was still as good as I expected, but the menu here was a bit different than down south. There's no shame in that, but when your wife wants you to order a combo of a good sized plate of breaded shrimp with a piece of fish alongside and all you can see are plates of two big fish and two jumbo shrimps, the complaints start to roll in. The Chowder was bland. The Fried Clams had a bit of sand or grit in it. And the Tartar Sauce (of which my wife feels is the best she ever had over at Harbor Fish South) was just ... wrong. The huge dip in flavor and consistency honestly felt like if RC Cola made their own version of tartar sauce and tried to pass it off. Seriously, after dinner, I actually apologized to my friends at how sub-par everything was. It's not clear if this was caused by the summer crowds, the quality suffering from the tourists forming the lines out the door. Or if this is just indicative of the shop itself. Regardless, if you're in the mood for great fish and chips with the tartar sauce you know and love, you might be better served heading down to Carlsbad. Harbor Fish here can do in a pinch, but the bump in taste and quality is definitely worth the trip south. read more

The wife and I decided to take a drive with the top down, and we set our sights on Oceanside Harbor Fish & Chips for lunch. On a couple of previous visits to the Oceanside harbor we attempted to dine at this establishment but the lines were quite long and we settled for another venue. But today we were surprised to see that tables were available, and placing an order was quite easy at the time we arrived. Shortly after our arrival all tables were occupied, but we had our alfresco spot (smile). I placed our order: 1 Sampler plate consisting of a single fish filet, 2 fried prawns, fries, cold slaw, and a cup of New England clam chowder. In addition I purchased a single piece fish plate with a tossed green salad. The price was reasonable and prepared quite quickly. The fish and chips were on par with our tastebuds; the cold slaw was extremely tasty and fresh with just the right amount of mayo and remaining on the healthy side. I highly recommend for casual dining on a sunny California afternoon. My reason for the four star rating is based on the absence of draft beer, and the paltry selection available in bottles. read more

Jumbo shrimp tacos had great flavor, were plentiful and bigger than I anticipated. Yum! The clam chowder was good. There were other menu items I would have liked to try but was too full--next time. I'd recommend it. read more

New England Fish and Chips snob here. You like fish and chips? I mean authentic, old skool, old world, east coast fish and chips? Then get down to Harbor Fish and Chips in Oceanside, CA. I absolutely will NOT eat any West Coast fish and chips anywhere else EXCEPT Harbor fish and Chips. They get everything right -- the Fish -- huge servings of cod, deep fried but still soft enough to melt in your mouth (and sometimes they give you an extra piece, don't ask me why, I never complain about it!) -- Fries -- thick cut, homestyle potato fries with malt vinegar on the table for the real northeast Fish and Chip snobs like me (ketchup is barbaric, people, and ranch is an abomination!) -- plus other great sides like rings or a huge side salad. The menu has everything you would expect in a place like this including delicious burgers but let's face it -- it's Harbor FISH AND CHIPS -- and THAT is the best thing about this place: they have the best Fish and Chips in ALL of California. Service is fast and great, atmosphere is perfect with authentic local fishing decor. And you ca eat outside to enjoy the harbor view or do some people watching during the tourist season. Came here for a late lunch/early dinner with the hubs for our day date. Neither of us have been here in more years than we can remember but, happy to see that nothing has changed. We were both pleasantly surprised at the service and the quality of food. The girl behind the counter was helpful in explaining the special and was extremely personable and sweet. Food came out maybe 10 minutes after we sat down and was piping hot, just the way I like it. The prices have definitely gone up but the quality of food, portion size and the lovely view from the outdoor patio made it worthwhile. If you've got a hankering for some traditional fish and chips, this is definitely worth a visit! read more

My friend and I were in front of the Harbor Fish and Chips in Carlsbad last week when the No King's protest was ending so we went in to have something to eat and within minutes every table was completely taken. The wait staff was unbelievably quick in taking orders, and just as quickly our food was served. I am not joking when I say the fish and chips that I had there that day was the best I have ever had. The crust was thoroughly crisp plus the fish was not overcooked. The french fries were just as crisp and perfect. Whenever I go to a new fish restaurant I always order fish and chips and I am often disappointed because the crust is often soggy on the inside. That was not the case. Our waitor Philippe was busy with a number of tables but prompt in assisting us throughout our meal.. An added feature is that the restaurant is located with a perfect view of the ocean. Called to see if I could place an order to go and sure enough, I could. To top it off it was ready in about 15 minutes which was the perfect amount this time for me to order, drive over from the Strand and circle the parking lot a few times to get a spot. The girl on the phone was super friendly as well as the employees inside when I picked up my order. The place is simple, no frills but appeared to be clean. The fish and chips were good. The fish was light and flakey. It was very fresh. Loved the batter on the fish! It was light but super crispy. I have to say it did need salt and so did the fries. The fries were also a bit soggy and needed to be cooked a little longer for some crispness. Overall a good experience. read more

Well I'm back folks, finally gave it one more try at Harbor Fish &Chip in Oceanside my home town since 1972. Everything is back to what my TASTE BUDS remember! Yes including the tartar sauce .I don't know what happened that day last year as if I was at a different establishment. The fish was greasy and not quality. Since I was so close to the ocean thought the fish n chips would be great. Not here! Low quality minced fish probably not cod from the texture. I recommend going somewhere else. read more

I really wanted to love this place because the employees are nice, the location is great, and the portions are huge and they LOOK appetizing. But thats as far as the good got for me. If you have ever been to Spencer McKenzies in Ventura, CA this is NOT that. Once we got the food I could see that the fish was extremely greasy to the point that the grease was dripping off my fish and onto my lukewarm fries below. The fries had zero flavor. Like none. Not a piece of salt or seasoning. The fish was fried beautifully, but also had zzzeeeerrrrooooo flavor. The quality of the fish itself seemed good. However, I just couldn't get past the lack of flavor. read more

I see why this place is rated so high. I like the vibes of this place. Will you get a warm friendly let's go talk about all your feelings vibe? No. It's a fish shop and they might be real sailors working here. JK! But this place was packed during winter break at 2pm. We had the fish tacos which were ginormous, I could barely get down one and I ordered two! My kids LOVED the fish sticks and the clam chowder. The food came out piping hot, plenty of tartar sauce, and the fish breading was soooooo crunchy. Even the thought of how crunchy it was makes my mouth water. Def come check it out. read more

The coleslaw was excellent, but the Cod fish and chips were not. The fish looked big and beautifully golden with a nice crunch, but the fish to batter ratio was terrible; I'd estimate 50-50 at best. Nearly all of the fries were so mushy and cold I could only eat the few that were not. I went away still hungry. read more

So this meal just about confirmed for our family that this city is nothing but an overpriced tourist trap high-ends or low. I think next time visiting here will just stick to in and out, del taco and bagels near our hotel, period. With all due respect, truly surreal how people rate this place anything above a 3* MAX, unless you grew up eating Filet-o-Fish sandwiches at McDonalds.

August 4, 2017 *(My birthday) Well we have been coming here for a very long time and have sent many friends to eat here. I noticed the last two visits that the fish & chips was off but I could not put my finger what the issues were until now! They are not using fresh fish they are using that nasty dried salted fish not even sure if it is even cod? This is the same junk H Salt fish & Chips uses which is why no one eats there any more. I took my 3 pieces of fish apart and looked at it and saw it was a clearish in color meaning it was from dried fish that was soaked in water to bring back to life. The fish was so greasy this has been the norm the last 3 times but again I thought maybe they had a new cook so I tried again but it was the exact same, nasty! I fond this fish so disgusting and was not able to eat it after finding out what it was. Only some who know real fish would even know that this is from dried salted fish and indeed not fresh. This fish had a bad smell to it like old dried fish which I had notice before I even tasted it. We do thing the shrimp and pineapple are good but would never come back due to this being the 3rd time it has happened to us, but never again! read more

There are a few things I really love about this place. For starters, its right in the harbor, some days there are even seals sitting on the pier! Now the restaurant is wonderful. Obviously I recommend the fish and chips. The portions are huge. Last time I went I got the two fish meal and probably could have just gone with one filet and fries and been full. The only issue was that the fish had more of a fryer taste than a fish taste... It may be time to change the oil. Otherwise, the food is truly delicious. You can't beat it for the money. The atmosphere, the location, the food and the price. They have the best fish tacos in all of San Diego County. My 2 guys had the basket with 3 fillets and fries. I ordered the 2 fish tacos because I was promised that if I couldn't finish, they'd help. Promises promises. My fish tacos were too big for the plate. Seriously. They're huge.
