This place had the potential to be a great bowling alley, but unfortunately the "supposed" owner and staff made the experience very unpleasant. We went for a birthday celebration for my sister, and our group included a mix of adults and children, with guests arriving at different times. She initially reserved and paid for two lanes and explained that she would add more lanes as additional guests arrived. Before our time on the lanes was up, she returned to the counter to purchase more lanes and was told that because more than 10 people were associated with the two lanes, we would not be allowed to extend our time or add lanes. The "owner" then accused my sister of LYING, which was completely uncalled for as if you're someone to lie to. At no point were we informed that non-bowlers were required to stay in the bar or arcade areas, and several guests had children with them, making the bar area inappropriate. After spending over $120 to support this business, being spoken to in that manner was extremely disappointing. When trying to clarify the situation, multiple staff members were speaking at once and seemed irritated by basic questions. Their attitude was dismissive and rude, making communication frustrating and uncomfortable. To make matters worse, the bar and food areas were clearly overwhelmed and understaffed, yet no one stepped in to help. Instead, the focus remained on brushing us off. Overall, the experience left us feeling unwelcome not as patrons but BLACK PATRONS, and it's unfortunate because this could have been a fun and enjoyable venue; but I will NEVER spend my money in a place that shows blatant racism. read more

Unprofessional, Disorganized, and Poorly Managed Hartfield Lanes used to be a great place to bowl, but their management has taken a serious dive-- and after my experience, I won't be back. My team and I have had a lot of fun bowling together, which makes the way this situation was handled even more disappointing. Instead of addressing concerns professionally and in person, an unnamed manager waited until 10 PM or later on Tuesday nights after league play to text me about supposed issues. No phone call, no face-to-face discussion--just outlandish accusations sent late at night on a weeknight. That alone speaks volumes about how this place is run. They never introduced themselves, never approached us directly, and ultimately removed my entire team over a $60 discrepancy-- even though two of my teammates had overpaid by $50 in total. To make matters worse, they sent me a security camera screenshot of a teammate, claiming they were sneaking in alcohol--but provided zero evidence of them possessing, drinking, or even being near a bottle. Just a random image of them sitting at a table, as if that somehow proved anything. Baseless accusations, no proof, yet they ran with it. Even more concerning, both times I was contacted recently, the issues involved the same two teammates--who both happen to be African American. The way management singled them out, made unnecessary remarks, and talked down about them felt completely inappropriate and disrespectful. And when I tried to clear things up, I was met with, "We don't need people like this in our business, we have plenty of paying bowlers." After speaking with my teammates, we all agreed that had they simply come to us during league play, this issue could have been resolved on the spot. Instead, they chose passive-aggressive, cowardly behavior, hiding behind late-night texts instead of a simple conversation. If that's the kind of management you're looking for, Hartfield is the place for you. Well, just like they claim to have better bowlers to bring in, we have better bowling alleys to take our business to--ones that actually value their league players and know how to run a smooth, professional operation. We bowl league at Astro Lanes and Bowl One and have never had such issues. We always have a great time at both and highly recommend checking them out instead of wasting your time navigating the downfall of a former legendary bowling alley like Hartfield Lanes. The staff does their best, but this manager needs to go ASAP. We never once complained about having to move lanes multiple times because they couldn't fix them, yet when it came to addressing an actual issue, they couldn't even have a conversation with us in person. That says everything. If Hartfield would like to dispute any of this, I have screenshots of our entire conversation as evidence. Just a heads-up to anyone considering league play here: it's going downhill fast, and there are much better places to bowl. Would not recommend. read more

While this could be a nice bowling alley with open lanes the owner ( who he introduced himself as) and staff is rude and egotistical. My family and I came out to bowl in celebration of my birthday there was a mix of age groups and everyone didn't arrive at the same time. I purchased 2 lanes and shoes and explained that as more ppl arrived I'd purchase more lanes. When I returned to purchase more lanes before the hour on my two lanes was up I was told that because there were more than 10 ppl in my 2 lanes he wouldn't extend our time nor could I purchase more lanes. He said you lied to me I explained that 1. I didn't lie because you never told me all none bowlers needed to be in the bar or arcade areas. 2. Many of the none bowlers had children with them therefore they weren't allowed in the bar area. 3. Who are you to lie to when I just spent $124 dollars to patronize your business. When we approached the counter there were 4-5 guys working ppl trying to purchase lanes in the next line etc. somehow all 4-5 ppl were all talking to my husband and I at the same time . They were totally annoyed with any questions to gain better understanding and communication, overwhelming rude. Looking back it was like they didn't want our business. Now the bar and food areas were backed up and needed a lot of help but no one went to assist instead they continued to be rude and dismissive to us. Hartfield lanes is like your local dive bar but in bowling alley version. I go on Tuesdays for my work league. They only have bar food, no dishes to share with others on the menu, and the fries come out perfectly crisp! Some of the vending machines were broke but not a problem for me because I'm not into that. Last night was lit because the claw machines were malfunctioning and giving free plays so I won a bunch of beanie babies. Get in there quick to get your free plays! read more

I showed up with my daughter at 5:00, the posted opening time . The front desk was unstaffed. Someone (maybe the owner or a manager?) was sweeping up. He had his headphones on. He took them off when I asked if they were open. He seemed confused as to the time, and then said his desk worker wasn't there but hasn't said he wasn't coming. He then proceeded to ignore us as we waited for ten minutes. No offer to help. Made us feel like we were an inconvenience rather than a customer. We eventually left after waiting around for ten minutes without any further acknowledgement or help. Prior to COVID we used to go bowling here a few days a week, probably to the tune of $40-$50. This experience was so unprofessional and bad that we won't be back again. You'd think after being shut down for months they'd want people's money. read more

A two level bowling alley in a quiet suburb of Detroit. The parking is sort of odd, and the building hasn't seen a lot of updating since the 1980s. The CRT scoring system looks to be from the 90s, and they put a modern wrap wallpaper on the back wall. A few craft beers on tap, some fried food, and several of the macro beers. There are two pub areas, also dated, but usually only one is open. Everything, including the bathrooms, are slightly dingy and worn. Towards the later hours a more rowdy group tends to come in. Worst experience bowling I've ever had! Keep in mind, Im 26 years old, and I took a sip of one of my friend's drinks because she asked me to taste it. Seconds later the bartender starts harassing our group. When her attitude got brushed off by us, she decides to come get in my face yelling DURING COVID, then put her hands in my face and told me to get the f*** out because I calmly asked her why she was talking to me. I don't know who pissed in her Cheerios yesterday, but she needs to learn to watch herself because doing that could've ended very badly for her had I not been thinking. Thankfully my wife got up and cursed her out for talking to me the way she was. Of course management called the police on us; a group of 10 BLACK people celebrating a birthday. They lied to them saying we attacked their bartender, that we climbed over the bar to get to her (we never left our lane! And the only one hostile was THEIR employee). His very words could've gotten one of us killed had one of those officers been having a bad day! Management's excuse for this not being a racially motivated attack was that they "have black friends" gaslighting the fact that they had been surveilling us the entire time we were there. We paid for an extra hour of bowling, food, and drinks that they wouldn't refund! I will NEVER go back to such a disgustingly racist establishment. Even other bowlers who weren't in our group were fuming about how we were treated. One gentleman told us he didn't understand why she had acted that way towards us when there were kids a few isles over drinking! KIDS WERE DRINKING AND THEY HARASSED US GROWN BLACK PEOPLE MINDING OUR BUSINESS! the bar tender was very rude to my sister and I and when the "owner" named Lisa approached me she pretended she cared and would make things right begged me to take a drink that I kept saying no to but finally gave in ,she said she would personally make it for me on the house and this is what she gave me a cup full of gnats and wanted me to believe that she didn't do this on purpose or that it wasn't intentional. I didn't trust it so i inspected the drink before i even drank it and what really told it all is while I was bowling she sat the drink on the table and told my family to ask me how it taste. I will never set foot in this place I have never seen such low down shit and blatant racism in my life and just because she has black employees there I guess I'm supposed to believe otherwise. We've gone with friends to this bowling alley a few times for bowling and then karaoke in the bar. When you walk in there are the lanes, the desk, snacks, bar, its all there. Then you go upstairs and there are what seems like a billion more lanes! I like a lighter ball, I prefer an 8 or 9 lb ball, which is a little harder to find here. The bar has a karaoke night. The people running the karaoke are friendly and entertaining. The bar is tiny. There were times we were there with 6-8 people and we took up the whole table section of the bar. Some 40 years later, I'm often here on winter Sundays, helping run a bowling league for special-needs kids. Except for a few high-definition TVs scattered here and there, I don't think the place has changed one iota since my childhood. Extremely rude staff. Went with a group of 8 people and paid over $120 to bowl. 2 of the group went to go get drinks from the bar while the rest of us began the game, upon returning everyone who would be drinking (4 of the 8) were asked to show their IDs, which they did. 10 minutes into our game the bartender came over yelling and clapping her hands quite loudly saying "NO NO NO YOU ALL HAVE TO GET OUT" when we respectfully asked why, she said it was because she didn't see the IDs of everyone who was drinking, so the people drinking showed their IDs a second time. The bartender left then came back minutes later a third time demanding to see the IDs of the other people who were not even drinking. At this point we confronted the worker asking if there was another issue they are not being clear about since we have all done our best to cooperate with their requests and have now been disrupted a total of 3 times. It should be noted that we are all in our early 20s and have been to this location multiple times and never had any issues prior; the alley was also particularly packed this night so the perception that we may have been disruptive is highly unlikely. In the end we requested to have our money refunded and left before even making it halfway through our first game. Will not be returning again. Do not recommend to anyone trying to have a peaceful fun night. read more

I came here for my friends birthday and they brought cupcakes and 13 people whole howled and bought beer and drinks. And we were forbidden to eat the birthday cupcakes. Bowling was 3$ a game this night and cheap beer also 3$. When I called back to see what lane availability was the guy who answered was rude and basically told me that I wouldn't be able to come in and bowl that day because there wouldn't be open lanes....which didn't match with the information on the website. I'm no bowling connoisseur ... but we had a great time at Hartfield Lanes. We went for a charity fundraiser and had a blast. The drinks we had were of a higher caliber than other bowling alley drinks I have had. We wore busted up old bowling shoes and bowled with bright green bowling balls. Is it a little run down? Sure - but it's a bowling alley for Pete's sake. Who cares!? It was a fun night & we will be back the next time we want to bowl. The attached bar (Hat Trick) has also proved to be fun. I love Hartfield! I am a *terrible* bowler, but I don't feel terrible when I'm at Hartfield because there are all different levels of bowlers here. I've been there when league play is going on, but there are still an equal number of couples or families there just to have fun. Snack bar food is pretty decent and reasonably priced. If you sign up for their email newsletter, you get a $10 off coupon and can get a lot of free kids' bowling through the summer. Lots of TVs to watch Tiger games and always playing good music. I like that there are two floors of bowling, too, so you can always get a lane. Haven't spent any time in the bar other than walking through, but everyone seems to be having a good time. Best part? Open bowling on Saturday nights and Glow Bowling on Friday nights. As another reviewer said, finding an 8- or 9-pound ball can be a chore. I went the day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday with three, nine year old boys. They had no food and 2 of three snack machines were out-of-order & the Bowling was pretty pricey. Anyways, we didn't have lunch so I told the boys we would get Fries and munchies at the Bowling Alley. Well we couldn't do that. When I asked If I could bring something in from the outside like Burger King I was told 'absolutely not'. I want to start by saying we have spent many hours at Hartfield Lanes and have had a lot of fun. However, after this past experience we will never return and will share our story with friends and family. My husband and 11 family members meet at Hartfield Lanes around 11am this Sunday 11/22/15 for our sons birthday. Some family members did check-in a little after 11am. We wanted to take advantage of the special posted on Hartfield Lanes website which states: Sunday's 10am-Noon $11/per lane. We knew you can have up to 6 people per lane so we only needed 2 lanes. However, due to the fact we didn't arrive prior to 10:30am the 'cut-off time' (WHICH IS NOT STATED ON THE WEBSITE) we were charged the regular rate per person. So what should have cost closer to $61 (clarified by the owner) was now about $91! I know for a fact that we have taken advantage of that special rate WITHOUT being there prior to 10:30am. I understand that a business has a policy---that is not what I take issue with, my problem is on website it just states "10am-Noon $11 per lane". I would suggest that the website states that there is a check-in time of 10am-10:30am. Again, I completely understand needing to have limitations on this special however,it was never stated and that time limit was NOT enforced our past times. We will not return to Hartfield and me and my entire family plan to share this very disappointed experience. read more

Okay, so this place is an absolute dive and other eyes may legitimately give it two stars. But this place is unique from a different era right in downtown Berkley. Others can bowl at Emagine, but this place feels more like home. Regular bowling upstairs and glow bowling downstairs for a small premium. Bowling and beer prices are fair, but not a bargain. They usually have more open lanes on the weekend than Thunderbird. Again, nothing classy or hip here. Still, it feels right. read more

For the shameless (or shameful, depending on your perspective) experience at a divey bowling alley (let's be honest here: is there really any other kind?) Hartfield is my venue of choice. This may have to do primarily with the fact that it's only a mile from house, but it's still the place I choose to infrequent when the bug to bowl bites. 'Went there to bowl last night with some friends and had a special experience upstairs: we had the entire place to ourselves and bowled on two lanes, which really helped increase the flow of the games. We had a great time. I bowled worse than I ever have in my entire life. That's not Hartfield's fault, though I'd like to blame them. I blame Hacker-Pschorr and also Kirkland's $.50 beers. And I blame myself for not "just saying no." So it goes. Alas! I have been to Hartfield before when all of their lanes are occupied--this happens on days when they have the leagues, but this only happened to me once. For the most part, service is relatively prompt and now that there's no smoking, you don't leave smelling like an ashtray, which was always one of the major downers of bowling. 'Beats the pants off Thunderbird in terms of price too. Hartfield attracts a diverse crowd in all respects, including skill level. Yesterday, I was definitely at the far-south extreme in the latter category. But the point is, no matter who you are or what you're wearing or how terribly you suck at bowling, you'll find yourself fitting in just fine and having a good time at Hartfield Lanes. read more

Many of my friends are suburbanites, so we met up here for one of our bowling outings. This bowling alley wasn't too bad. It reminds me of Plum Hollow in Southfield, as far as layout, but this place also had an upstairs. There aren't many lanes here, roughly 30-40, but its a good amount of space if you wanted to meet a few friends here. Upstairs there were more lanes and a bar area, which is where me and my friends hung out for most of the night. The staff was pretty cool, although the drinks could have been better. I suggest giving them a call to check out open bowl times and rates. When I went, I recall it being slightly more expensive than I liked. read more

I wish it were possible to give no stars, because this is what this rip-off joint deserves. My family chose this place to have our 2nd Annual Christmas bowling party. Our party included 11, 9 were bowling, but we all were buying food and drinks. We paid $5/game (2 games) to bowl plus $3.75 each for shoes. In the 6th frame of the second game they shut our 2 lanes down claiming 3 people did not pay and we owed them $15. So if we all did not pay how is it that we all had rented shoes on! The so-called manager Eric was a rude, lying ignorant twit! If there was a discrepancy with the the number of games that were paid for he could have come down to talk to us instead of shutting the two lanes down. It's not what you do, but how you do it! Needless, to say a big argument started. There was another group of bowlers who were white next to us who checked out right before we did. They said they had just ripped them off for $10 claiming 2 people didn't pay. So Hartfield Lanes in Berkeley Michigan is an equal opportunity rip-off establishment! Booked a birthday party for young kids. Hartfield states on their party page, "Here's A Great Idea...Let Us Do All Of The Work! You want the party to be perfect and we know it can be stressful!" That couldn't be further from the truth. We booked the party in their big room (over 25 kids coming). We arrived early to setup. But they setup a smaller party in the room already. Room they wanted to put us in sat 12. Ended up with a room on a different floor. It holds 20. All downhill from there. Many kids waited 15 min or more for shoes, lanes turned on 15 min late, lanes were not setup as promised (no balls, no names, no bumpers,...). 45 min later, they shut the lanes off (paid for 1 hour), not enough plates or cups, no silverware, and I had to go get the pop (no juice provided). When we tried to settle up, it took over 30 min. Kids had fun bowling (thank goodness) and the pizza tasted good. But we ended up doing 90% of the work. And they wanted full payment. Even after we agreed upon a settlement and the bank sent a check, they tried to file a police report. OMG!! Totally taken advantage of. I paid them anyway just to get rid of them. read more

Your typical American bowling alley. The fact that the building is old and a bit outdated is all part of its charm. The food is all fried and delicious, all the staff we've encountered has been friendly, and the 2-level aspect means that there is always plenty of room for your and your whole group.
