I feel a little guilty writing a mixed review because I've lived in the Monterey area for almost 20 years and we've eaten here off and on, and try to support local businesses. I can't remember ever having a great meal here. Seaside is basically a middle class community with a diverse clientele, so its menu is geared toward a more Americanized taste for Japanese cuisine. The tempura was a bit over battered, and as light and crispy as excellent tempura should be. There are several techniques to achieve the perfect tempura batter result, but it felt like the kitchen was using the same technique that Chinese American restaurants use for sweet and sour pork. The salad was crisp and fresh enough, and the mayo based dressing was interesting and sweet. The miso soup was fine. The Chirashi (mixed sashimi over rice in bowl) was a bit too safe and conservative in order to save money. Chirashi is generally an expensive dish that connoisseurs usually order to get a sense of the chef's skills, but when it's just the cheapest fish, one feels disappointed. The wait staff was young, energetic, and a bit inexperienced and functional in their table side manners. They seemed a little overwhelmed by the number of guests, but they tried to keep up. One small thing was that they had a sign at the register in big letters announcing openings for dishwasher, server, and sushi chef. If they're looking for a sushi chef with a sign at the register, that's got to be concerning. I'm not sure a highly qualified chef would necessarily be coming to a restaurant like this, and it doesn't give the guests a sense of confidence. read more

Ohhh man the specialty rolls were fabulous! We had to wait an hour to pick up twice because this place was soo busy!!! Be prepared to wait for pick up around dinner time, definitely worth waiting for after a beach day.. We went to the "highly" recommended sushi places in Monterey county, some even more expensive and the other sushi places didn't quite have that OMG factor that this place has! Since we went twice, the grinch is by far my favorite! The ones we tried and will eat again is the I love you roll, pebble beach, captain crunch, lovers point, magic dragon. And Megan's.. We regularly frequent this spot. Best sushi in Seaside at a great price. My favorite rolls are the Lover's Point, Samurai, and the Little Bomb jalapeño appetizer. Their bento box special is a great value as well! There is a reason we keep coming back. read more

I usually never do reviews, but it's definitely needed. First off, I was told that it would take 45 mins until my order was ready for pick up- okay that's fine, not a problem. I get there 45 mins later and they tell me the food is still not ready, so I waited inside only to find out 15 mins later that the food had been waiting there on the sushi bar this whole time. I take the food home and the sushi is really cold, the portion is very small the lion king roll that I ordered was drenched in mayonnaise and the mussels were very dry. Ever since the pandemic the quality and portion size of the food has been very disappointing. I took the food back to get a refund. No apologies for the inconvenience were given. Let's start by saying: I've had great sushi here. This is a review based Tonkotsu Ramen that we picked up for take out today. I was so looking forward to ramen tonight and was super bummed when I saw the very burnt (and dry) pork and the overcooked hard boiled egg. The broth was very salty and not very rich. I don't think good sushi places have to be ramen specialists, but if it's going to be on the menu, it should be good. If you want terrible customer service this is the restaurant for you. If you want unauthentic crappy Japanese food this restaurant is also for you. Harumi serves old food that belongs in the trash. Old wilted lettuce used for the salad and old dried out chicken and beef. Also beware of the roach infestation problem here. Pretty nasty to see a roach on the table when you are trying to eat. Went for a birthday celebration last night. Restaurant was not busy so we were seated immediately. It was 4 of us, but only 2 place settings. We had to ask more than once for "silverware" (chop sticks, napkins etc.) and get the waiters attention for water refills. Almost felt like they forgot about us... We had sushi as well as the dinner combo, salmon teriyaki and tempura which was good so no complaints there. However, the service was not that great. This used to be my favorite sushi place in the Monterey area, but something has changed. The menu is the same but I think there is new management or a new owner. The sushi is decent, seems like the pieces are a little smaller but still a good sized portion. What is different mainly is the service. The last time I was here they forgot dishes and brought them out intermittently such that we got our meals at different times. I assumed it was just an off night, but now I'm not so sure. Tonight, we waited for a long time for the host to even make contact with us. He apologized for the delay and was able to seat us. Then it was a long time for someone to come to the table. Then the drink order, then the food order. Edamame came early, but not the wakame. That came with the main dishes. And two of the four of us got our sushi first, but only part of mine. Then my wife got hers. Then after many more minutes came my daughter's tekka maki, and I mean it was probably 15-20 minutes between the first sushi dish coming to the table and the last. Then they plated it wrong by combining two person's meals onto one plate and also got my wife's order incorrect. They also no longer give discounts based on a percentage of your meal for long term loyal customers. I guess that's fine, because I don't think I'll be long term anymore, and the loyalty is gone. First time here! I came at lunch on a Thursday, was seated in about five minutes, another five or so before getting my order in. The staff were friendly, atmosphere was busy and a bit noisy but it was clean, well-lit, and its decor had a Japanese feel to it. I sat at the bar, where a couple sushi chefs were heads-down prepping and serving all manner of sushi, occasionally reaching into the glass cold case that spanned the long length of the bar for ingredients. Food came out in about ten minutes. I ordered the Tonkatsu (breaded pork), Shoyu Ramen, and a Ramune (Japanese soda). The Tonkatsu was a good size, pre-sliced for me, breaded to perfection, and had a pleasing sweet sauce drizzled on top. It came with a side salad and rice, both were great, and a Miso Soup, also good. The ramen was amazing! Noodles tasted like there were made in-house, served plentiful and Al Dente, with savory broth, tender smoked/grilled pork, and all the traditional Japanese fixings. I didn't have to use soy sauce for anything, just knocked it out of the park. I left for $27 after tax and a 20% tip, which is about $7 more than I wanted to pay, but I had a good experience. Me and my girlfriend used to love coming to this spot for sushi. Since The New Management took over, the VIBES were not the same. Our food were all over the place. I didn't get my appetizer until after my main course came and was nearly finish with the main course. Also they got my order wrong twice. I am very disappointed but it is what it is. I've been to Harumi a few times and this last one was by far the best yet. I walked in on a slow Monday night and asked the chef to make me something special. He gave me two things that were just off the hook good plus the Grinch Roll which was just fabulous. I got something with Uni on the top of it and softshell crab and one of them had a Shiso leaf on the inside of this crunchy hollowed sushi magic. Everything was so good! This used to be my favorite spot in the entire county for Sushi. That is until the ownership change. It has gone downhill incredibly fast from quality of food to quality of service. Small things like miso soups taking 20 minutes to come out lukewarm on a empty wednesday night or your server spilling your iced tea and throwing 3 napkins on your table and walking away with out saying a single word are most noticeable to me. Fish has drastically gone down in terms of quality, what I considered to be one of the restaurants with the freshest fish on the peninsula is no longer up there. Always a treat when we meet , this is one of my favorite past times when I come to th Monteray area . Everytime we walk In we are promptly greeted by the sushi chefs and waiters or waitresses. I honestly can say that I have not had a bad experience here and we come pretty often when we go to the area. I enjoy the atmosphere with wonderful japanese cuisine. From the bento boxes , to the ramen I always leave satisfied. This visit was not any different. Thank you for the great consistent service and the great food that matches the quality of the culture. We went in tonight, and everything was slow. We waited 15 minutes to be seated in a half empty restaurant. We ordered drinks and a small bowl of edamame was brought to the table...with two plates for three people. Our waitress also only brought two dishes with our rolls...weird flex but ok. She never asked if we wanted more drinks, and my entree never arrived. Well, that was the last chance for me, and they just lost my business permanently! The hostess finally came up to me and directed me where to go to pay for my food, so I went to go pay, and I could see her bagging my sushi roll, and I asked her if that had the side order if sriracha that I requested, clearly seeing it didn't, but not wanting to be rude. So this woman proceeds to snap at me in front of everyone, and let me know that maybe next time I should ask for something if I want it added. I let her know that I DID ask for it, and it was also on my order ticket, but not a sorry from her, nothing.This is not the first time I have dealt with rudeness here, but it will absolutely be the last. This is the first time I've ever left a bad review for a restaurant. I ordered for pickup after a long day at work. Upon arrival, there were two groups ahead of me in line, the staff sat them down one after the other and then just completely ignored me after that. 10 minutes go by and a group of 4 came behind me. The sushi chef talked to them and gave them a table while continuing to ignore me. I walked to him and asked If I could be helped as well, told him I had a pickup and he told me to go to the register. I didn't even say anything about being skipped in line or being ignored. The server there told me my food was not ready and they would text me when ready. I waited 45 minutes outside and decided to go back inside to check and when talking to the same server I was told it would be another 15 minutes. I was already frustrated with the wait, but the fact that the group of 4 was already up and leaving the table after eating and I had to wait a whole hour for 2 rolls didn't make sense to me. I then asked her for a refund since I didn't want to wait anymore. She called someone to help her and said I'd get my refund in 3 days, I asked for a receipt for my refund and she said it would take 15 minutes for me to get that. Now I really don't know what makes her think that I would wait an extra 15 minutes for a receipt but not for my food, but maybe this review will get them to think a little bit more about their communication with the customers. read more

Harumi Sushi is my go to sushi restaurant whenever I'm in the area! My family, friends, and I love going to this place for lunch and/or dinner. The ambiance is casual and inviting, which is perfect for a date, catch up with friends, or a nice celebratory meal. The service is also friendly and attentive. One time, my parents and I had dinner here for my mom's birthday. The waiter (named Ryan) found out it was her birthday and took off a roll on our bill as a discount. We thought that was really thoughtful -- we can't thank you enough! Besides the awesome service, the food is fresh and delicious! There are a variety of items to choose from (udon, ramen, bento boxes, sushi rolls, sashimi). My parents love ordering their Shoyu Ramen (pork, menma, seaweed, naruto, spinach, nori, bean sprouts, green onion) and the portion size is huge! I also love ordering their special rolls. They have a wide variety to choose from, but my particular favorites are Captain Crunch and Carmel Valley. What a total disappointment the last visit was. The sushi (fish) was warmer than the rice. The rice was awful and dry. This place has seriously gone downhill over the years. At the end of our dinner I asked my dining partner for a pen, he questioned "what do you need a pen for"? To which I replied, to scratch Harumi Sushi off the list of places to eat from now on. We ordered the lion king roll(baked roll) it was so good, especially if you love salmon. chicken udon was huge, i ended up sharing it. The broth was yummy and hit the spot. Harumi has been on Seaside's main drag for a long time. Like most of the Sushi restaurants on the Monterey Peninsula, I believe it is Korean owned. They do have a Japanese sushi chef, Hiro, and server, Mina. Hiro is of few words, sticking to making sushi, while Mina is the server/cashier, and a delight to my Mom, who is Japanese as well. The rest of the staff is a diverse group, but generally provide good service. The space is large, with a pretty long sushi bar on the left as you enter, tables in the middle going down a long room, and on the right are half a dozen elevated booths. There is even a back room of sorts in the rear. There are 2 large screen TV's usually playing sports. We usually sit at the booths, but our last go was at the sushi bar, where Mina recognized my Mom, even though it has been a long time. Hiro did all the sushi we ordered through Mina. My Mom was raised in a Sushi-ya in Kansai (Osaka-Kobe area), Japan. She tells me they ordered the best rice, best tea (O-Cha), and best dried seaweed (Nori), and great local rice wine (Sake) they could get, so she knows her sushi, even at her advanced age. Perhaps this is why I get a little sushi-snobby. Sushi to most in America nowadays are rolls with all sorts of sauces and ingredients, and oyster shooters. Sort of like your nicer local bar, where your Mixologists concocts new combinations of liquor and accent ingredients and flavors, to make a new "artisanal" drink often requiring a mortar, pestle, and a strong shake. Sort of like our culture, American Ingenuity. But in an American sushi restaurant, although someone comes up with a cute new roll with a cute new name, they are usually left to the roll-maker, who is often a noob or less experienced young'un with little knowledge of fish, knife skills, and customs, etc. They are taught to pour on thousand island and sriratcha sauce over tempura batter crumble covered rice, roll it up and cut it into pieces. Sort of like a smaller burrito, into bites. To the roll lover, this is great, and many rolls are yummy. But we stuck with Nigiri, which is rice (called Shari in sushi terms), and fish (Sakana) or something raw from the sea. This is how most sushi in Japan is consumed. Most Americans like steak, not raw seafood, ergo, rolls and more rolls. And ordering Nigiri at the sushi bar, you notice the seafood, and the rice, and their preparation/presentation. Not the mayo or hot sauce. Hiro-san cut the fish in a traditional Japanese way. You can tell by looking at it. Most Korean owned sushi-ya cut long thin slivers to make the sushi look like a great value. Subtle, but noticeable. We ordered: Hamachi (Yellow tail), Maguro (Tuna) O-Toro and Chutoro (expensive choice cuts of Tuna, hard to find), Sake (not the drink, homonym for salmon), Hotate (scallop), Ikura (not How Much? but homonym for salmon roe), Uni (not short for uniform, but sea urchin), and an appetizer of Takoyaki (mini-octupi in a fried batter ball) . All were good! There was no wasabi under the fish like Japan, but in in American style, in your soy sauce dish to your liking. The Shari, was lacking. Sushi chefs will tell you sushi is 70% rice, so the quality, texture, flavor, make a difference. Here, it was chyotto.....(not quite.....) But try this place, because in SF Bay Area (vs Monterey Bay area) terms, it is pretty good and reasonable for Nigiri, and they do have a wealth of rolls for you Sushnoobs, but not so much for you Sushnobs, like me. read more

Both speak Korean and Japanese. The Waitress was a Hispanic Lady who was friendly and quick. For my meal I ordered a 3 Item Bento Box which included Teriyaki Chicken, Beef and Tempura as well as a Salad and Miso Soup. The Teriyaki Sauce was very light mild in taste but not bad. The Tempura was ok but the Vegetables weren't cooked. As for the price with the Soda my Bill came to $16.56 not including the Tip. So good but food was an hour late and they put siracha on when asked for it without and called specifically for that. Update: we took our food back in and told them it had siracha and they made us feel like they were remaking them and instead they wiped off the siracha leaving the rolls that we love and get often extremely spicy still... hence the whole reason we called and asked for it without... they wiped it off and put a ton of spicy mayo over it to hide it. We have had these rolls so many times the way we asked for it and this time it was definitely not the same. I'm so upset. Wasted money. Best sushi place in the bay. I have tried several sushi places but nothing compares to here.. their food is fresh and everything is so flavorful. Service is always great! They never fail to fill my drinks and they always check on us to see how we're doing. They also offer reward points so hop on that ASAP. **Highly recommend: Captain crunch roll!
