After trying quite a few affordable omakase spots around NYC, I'd sau this is the best-value $69 omakase serving good quality, thick-cut sashimi. We got exactly one hour to enjoy 13 courses--no fillers like apps, miso soup, or dessert--just nigiri and hand rolls. Despite the price point, they still serve premium ingredients like hokkaido scallop and caviar. I thought I'd still be hungry after 13 courses, but the thick-cut slices of fish were so generous that I left completely stuffed and satisfied. My favorite courses include: *Botan ebi uni - the shrimp was meaty, and the uni melted in my mouth *Hokkaido scallop with truffle sauce - rich umami from the truffle *Chutoro with pickled wasabi - buttery with a subtle kick *Seared otoro with caviar - torching cut through the richness, making it less greasy *Negitoro hand roll - possibly the most generous hand roll I've ever had Also, If you ever search "favorite budget omakase in NYC," Shinn East always comes up. While interaction with the chef was minimal, the pacing was perfect and we never felt rushed.

We went to Shinn East for their omakase and had an 8 pm reservation. Half of my party arrived on time, while the rest were a few minutes late, but the staff was patient and waited for everyone to arrive before starting. Service throughout the night was attentive. Our water glasses were always full, and our alcohol was refilled consistently until we finished the bottle. The space itself is set up in the shape of a U, with the chefs working in the center so everyone gets a good view of the preparation. It creates a cozy, intimate atmosphere where you feel connected to the process. The omakase is 13 courses for $69, with the option to order more afterward, which feels like a solid value. The fish tasted fresh, and each piece was thoughtfully prepared. While the progression was straightforward, the quality of the seafood really shined. Overall, Shinn East delivers a well-priced omakase with fresh fish, smooth service, and a fun layout that lets you watch the chefs in action. Making it a great spot for both seasoned sushi lovers and those looking to dip into the omakase experience without breaking the bank.

YUM!! I'm always a fan of omakase, and Shinn East has definitely become a favorite of mine! I haven't been here before the renovations, but I've always heard great things about it, so I was excited to finally try it out. You're given 13 pieces for $69. Every piece was delicious and fresh, and I'm pretty sure my friends and I all said "THAT WAS SO GOOD" after each piece. The quality is great, and for the price, I can't complain. Even though I was still a tad hungry after, I knew I would want to come back. Loved it!

Rating: 7.5/10 Date Last Visited: 8/23/2025 We ordered the 13 course omakase ($69). Each piece was pretty good, with my favorite being the Hamachi, O-toro, and Hotate. However, I remember the sushi tasting better the first time I went (this is my second time), and I don't think I would consider this to be above average in terms of my other omakase experiences. While the sushi pieces were good, I've had better at other places. For the price, it's pretty good value but the taste is about average in terms of omakases. Overall, I would recommend trying at least once for the value, but I probably wouldn't be back often.

I'm a big fan of omakase, and Shinn East came highly recommended by a friend. For $69, you get 13 pieces--it sounded like a steal, so I decided to try it with my daughter and her friend while visiting New York. Our reservation was at 7:00 PM, and each session is limited to one hour. Like many omakase spots, the chef worked at the center and prepared each piece right in front of us, handing them over one by one. The clock started the moment we sat down. The fish was fresh and high quality, with each piece carefully crafted. The seasoned rice paired with the melt-in-your-mouth fish made for a delightful experience. Toward the last couple of pieces, the chefs began preparing for the next session, which did make things feel a bit rushed. We were still slightly hungry afterward, so we grabbed dessert elsewhere. Overall, it's a fantastic value at $69 and definitely worth trying. I'd happily recommend it and may return myself. The only reason I hesitate to give five stars is that the strict one-hour time limit (and early prep for the next group) makes the experience feel a little hurried.

Their omakase is only $69, and it's honestly such a steal for the quality you get. The fish is incredibly fresh, high-quality, and prepared with such attention to detail--it's clear the chefs know their craft. Every bite was a delight, from the perfectly seasoned rice to the melt-in-your-mouth fish. For the price, it feels like a luxurious experience without breaking the bank.

Such a great experience! We went for our anniversary a few weeks ago, I had never been. Heard great things and it lived up to the hype. The omakase was well paced and to be honest don't feel as though I had a bad bite. Everything was high quality and delicious. They knew it was our anniversary so they gave us a special dessert or Totoro, salmon roe, and more fish. The toro, hamachi, and ebi stood out to me most but I don't think I could pick a favorite. It is mid range to slightly higher priced but doe NY omakase I knew what I was paying and was happy with the quality and do think that is is worth it. The space is small but the seatings are timed so it never felt crowded, the staff is efficient and attentive. Really enjoyed this and would recommend for a nice, quaint omakase.

Shinn East is an East Village omakase in a neighborhood I feel with many solid good value options but I'm still searching for that knock-out meal. They have an intimate dining set-up with about 4 seats per chef, allowing even distribution. The meal is quite efficient aiming for an hour per dinner and is priced at $69 for 12 pieces and hand roll and then add on menu. They have a solid sake selection for drinks with small bottles. The staff were all very attentive throughout the meal and quite considerate. Our chef was quiet but engaged with any questions or preferences with rice amount. The omakase had your typical findings and leaned on the simplistic side without too many garnishes (which I personally appreciated). The fish however tasted fairly bland and there was a lacking fresh taste though it was fine. The chutoro for instance lacked that "melt-in-your-mouth" experience you'd expect and were fairly chewy but tasted decent. The rice wasn't anything noteworthy. Uni also looked a bit old and didn't have that creamy taste. The kinemedai, kanpachi, and scallop were all very good however. The add-on menu did have a good selection of pieces and reasonably priced at $8-$25 for the more lucrative pieces with garnishes. Overall shinn east is a good value omakase for the menu and options though lacking in flavor for some courses and I think consistency is the differentiating factor between Shinn and other omakase I prefer in the $90-$110 range like Saikou and shiki.

We've tried a few of the "budget" omakase spots (what I'd consider under $100/pp), and I think SHINN East/West is one of the best ones. The quality of the fish is always very solid, they cover some of the more expensive pieces (fatty tuna, caviar, uni, etc.). Things are always seamless - people are seated on time, pieces come out in a very orderly fashion, they're mindful of allergies - and you know exactly what to expect. They even did BOGO deals when SHINN East closed down for renovations. The East restaurant is now larger, but keeps the same feel as before. Overall I always enjoy coming to SHINN East/West and know exactly what to expect.

Really good quality omakase and a great price. Defs a quick time frame as they turn over the tables in like 1 hr or 1.5 hrs. Decent size corse of 13 rolls and soo soo good. Defs a great spot. Loved the fatty tuna roll. Quality and service were both amazing- defs recommend

This was yet another amazing but inexpensive Omakase in NY's East Village. Similar to other places and reviews I've written, you don't come here for a masterclass in service or for the wine selection, you come here for the fresh fish, no frills service and just a great sushi experience. It's getting hard to figure out which ones to return to and which ones to continue trying given new ones are opening so quickly but I think I'll be back here for sure.

It was a really great experience that's worth the money. My friend and I had a great time. We didn't feel rushed but omakase always feels too short! The place was completely full and I felt cozy. The sushi was really fresh. They also had nicer ingredients like fish roe and truffles.

One of the most popular and affordable omakase in NYC. You get 12 nigiris and a handroll for $69pp. Each seating is just under an hour, so be sure to be on time as they call your name out for seating. There was a bit of confusion with our reservation not being in their system, but they still thankfully sat us. The omakase included a variety of fresh fish with each one being tastier than the one before. The uni on scallop and otoro were my favorites, which just melted in your mouth. I will say that some of my pieces were a bit smaller than everyone else's because I had the end of the fish, so felt slightly unfair though. You can see the mackerel didn't even cover the rice on my nigiri like the others, for example. Anyways, it is pretty cool that they give you a nice birthday freebie, which is a little bowl with various fish. Overall, great quality omakase for a good deal. It's not overfilling, but leaves you satisfied.

To be honest, I was getting a little nauseated after 5 pieces, haha~ They were definitely delicious but I'd probably just eat 3 or 4 pieces and share with a friend! It was easy to text the number on the website and coordinate a pickup time, and the staff was friendly when I arrived. The wait times have gotten better over the years (probably because people are waiting for the restaurant next door), but the food and drinks here are still top-notch. Staff is always great, and they all work so efficiently. I am generally a fan of izakayas, but there are very few that offer plates that are designed to be shareable, and this is one of the reasons the food here is so enjoyable in a small group setting. I am obviously biased and think they can do no wrong, but some of my staples that have stood the test of time: Kimchi cream udon, avocado tofu salad, salmon sashimi tacos, and the kani cream croquettes. I was so excited when they opened an outpost in Flushing years ago, but sadly it shuttered during COVID.
