Enjoyed our meal at Hashi Gawa. The service was great, very helpful as we were first timers eating there. Large selection to chose from. Easy to order on your phone and food came fairly quickly. Had a 3 item bento box with teriyaki salmon, veggie tempura and avocado maki. Everything was fresh and delicious! Also, drank an iced chocolate which was very tasty. This place is the bomb! It's tucked in a corner in the Nob Hill plaza in Alameda. The inside is really small, but they have really good sushi and food. The menu is not overwhelming and everything is high quality. Good selection of fishes. Excellent presentation and it definitely stands out from other sushi spots. 10/10 read more

It was 45 minutes to closing on a Sunday night and my mom and I walked into Hashi Gawa. The bubbly host said we were welcome to sit at the sushi bar, which made it quick and easy to order. Staff was friendly/attentive and our tea/water never went empty. We started off with a few rolls. The baked scallop was to die for! Each bite melted in my mouth! If you like rich, decadent flavor bursting in your mouth, than the baked scallop roll and probably Lion King, are perfect for you! Then, we had the appetizer sashimi with 4 kinds of fish. The chef was so sweet, he upgraded us to the Omakase to welcome us for our first time here. What a TREAT! Omakase means chef's choice and I HIGHLY recommend it at Hashi Gawa! Each fish was fresh, delicious, and melted like butter in my mouth. The different variations of fish texture ranged from firm to soft and all so good. The salmon, hamachi (hint of lemon flavor), salmon belly, white fish, were soft, supple, delicate, and flavorful. To my surprise, I loved the amberjack! Also, something you won't find at other sushi restaurants, they serve REAL horseradish wasabi with their sashimi! If you love Omakase, Hashi Gawa is the place to go! The food is good but I wouldn't come back... the first time I came the food was yummy but the second time they were so slow that only half of one orders came within 45 minutes, and our missing dishes (sushi rolls, fried noodles) were easy things to make. Tables that arrived and ordered half an hour before us were complaining their food didn't come or came wrong (ramen instead of yakisoba.) when we asked the server said "almost" even though when we cancelled our orders and left they clearly hadnt started making any. They seem to prioritize to-go orders so if you want to eat here only take it to go. TLDR: food good but you will wait four hours for it read more

I walked in to place a to-go order, it was pretty busy but I was only getting two rolls. I was told 15 min, came back in 15, they said it was being boxed, but I waited another half hour in there. 1 of two of the rolls was rolled terribly, as in falling apart before it could make it to my mouth. between those two things it made me feel like I did something to wrong them. 12/9/21 What a day!--I think I've finally found a sushi restaurant worthy of regularling in the Oakland area! As you know, it's REALLY hard to find good sushi restaurants. I mean, like 2/3rds of them can't even do their rice right, right??? Then of the 1/3rd left, most of them ain't got good fish. And note I ain't even talking price as one of those things I care about, but if I did this would be mission impossible! Well, not only does this place do their rice PERFECT, and their fish is of the UTMOST QUALITY......... okay... yeah sorry you don't get the entire triangle--they aren't cheap haha. But not expensive either... actually quite reasonable prices for what you get. 1. Gyoza $7.95 "pan fried pork & chicken pot stickers (6pc)": I dig their gyoza, and my 2rd old ultra picky boy LOVED them. Personally I like the skin crisper, but theirs was fine--just lightly pan fried. But the stuffing was really great--super juicy and so light on your palate. 8/10 2. Blue Shrimp Yakatori (2 pc) $12: So this one's tough. As a yakatori I don't think they can do better. The shrimp was perfectly done with a slightly blackened shell, with great char and smoke flavor. The problem was I guess due to the way it was cooked, the shell is near impossible to peel off. It just sticks to the meat. BUT... that's not all bad, cause the shell was thin enough to just chew and swallow, and does lend flavor. Also, the heads were perfectly cooked too where the brain was still juicy, gooey, and oooooh so creamy delicious. 9/10 3. Suke Sake Toro Nigiri $5 "soy marinated salmon belly": Yeah, what can I say?--it is perfect, and beautiful in its simplicity. Classic shape and size, and super fresh, crisp salmon. Rice was correct. Not a bad price either. 9/10 4. Hashi Kaisen Don $39 "assorted premium fish (8-10) on sushi rice, comes w/ miso soup & salad": This was what made me a believer. First off, short of anything with the word Michelin displayed anywhere within the vicinity of the restaurant's name, this is the most beautiful, creative, and exotic plating of sashimi ever. Period. Just based on looks alone, they already won. So clearly they have some of the "typical" fish and cuts, like salmon and blue fin, but there's clearly some stuff there I don't normally get. Now, you'd think someone who prides himself on trying far more than the average joe, that I'd learn the frickin' names of these fish... but alas, I also have a ridiculously bad memory, so it's hard for me. All I can tell you is that some of the fish was different than what I'm used to, in delicious ways. But I think one of my favorite parts is the perfectly fried shrimp heads, so crisp that everything down to the tentacles are edible, and yet the brains remained succulent! And adding to the mesmerizing display of raw fish is something I did not expect--seasoned, slightly brown-colored sushi rice. I'm not clear if the rice itself is a different variant (which sometimes is a thing--my favorite is the purple rice I had in Japan which in itself is mind blowing when made right), or it was picking up some color and texture from spices? Well, anyway, it was a great tasting, and beautiful touch. I absolutely believe this is the best sashimi dish I've ever had, bar none. That said, though I have reviews of many over-the-top-expensive restaurants, I actually haven't tried any ultra high-end sushi restaurants. I think Morimoto's in NY city would be the most expensive, so, yeah I haven't had what you'd probably call the best of the best. Anyway, with that in mind, I still think you'd be quite impressed with this dish. 10/10 5. Beef Teryaki $14.95 "grilled angus beef w/ teriyaki sauce, comes w/ miso soup, rice, salad": Remember that part about a picky 2yr old? So, you know me, I wouldn't be caught dead ordering beef teriyaki at any serious Japanese restaurant, but I think it's the only thing on the menu he'd eat. But you know what???--it wasn't no normal teriyaki!!! It was some serious medium-rare tasty steak, grilled and charred, and sliced up. For $15! That's a DEAL! 10/10 I'm coming back. OH!--almost forgot. So, outside the restaurant there's a banner that says "soft opening". Not sure how long they've been open, but since there are already 90 reviews, I'm guessing they're past that grand opening period and forgot to take off that sign? I dunno. But hopefully this place doesn't get too crowded after people find out one of the best sushi restaurants in the entire SF area, with reasonable prices, is in their backyard. I believe the picture is a toro roll?? *I also ordered some oysters which were a special at the time and very reasonably priced! The restaurant is very small, yet the food came out with good speed + amazing quality. My friend and I got the same roll, which is usually not optimal (as we like to try different things when we go out to get a little of two different dishes), but we were very happy with our decision! **Most of the rolls/combos are on the pricier side compared to other spots in Alameda and Oakland. My friend and I personally thought that our roll was worth the price and indeed very filling. Honestly, would return again for moderately special occasions. Great quality fish! We did get the same roll, so I think that specific roll was worth the price--but I can't speak for the other rolls and their prices. Been coming here since they first opened and have never had a bad experience. The sushi is always fresh and customer service always on point. This is my sons favorite sushi spot and they already know what he wants when we come in. We had stopped coming for a little while and I was getting his sushi from another place closer to where he has his class but he would get like an allergic reaction which I thought was either the avocado or raw fish but no, it was that place sushi bc he had the same here n hasnt happened again so we'll be sticking to Hashi Gawa when in Alameda. We always get the rainbow roll and Philly roll for my kid and then I usually get the mango devil and toro roll or something else and those always come out so fresh and delicious. Always pass by the plaza, but finally stopped in to try Hashi Gawa. Prices are good. We ordered ramen and udon which I would recommend. The rolls were ok. Rolls had too much sauce, but perhaps I just ordered the ones with a lot of sauce. Would want to go back and try more of the menu. read more

I'm not sure what it is about this place. I've gotten the vegan sushi rolls from here twice and ended up with food poisoning both times. The first time I thought it was a fluke, but twice is a pattern. They also put nigiri (for my wife) in the same container as my vegan rolls. My guess is they don't care about cross contamination when preparing the "vegan" food. They should probably remove the label "vegan" from their menus. read more

I love this place so much! I'd give it about at 4.2891 stars :) The food is mostly good and always fresh. The service is very attentive and always at your service! I personally like the Nigiri and the Lion King as my go to orders. I have been here on multiple occasions ranging from a party of 13 to a party of 3, and all of these experiences have been an A caliber! The wait time is a bit of an issue taking usually 50 minutes for 3 rolls of sushi but not too much of a complaint for me. I recommend this place to anyone that is a Japanese food lover! read more

I liked the unique items on the menu that not many other sushi places have; feels like they're making an effort to stand out. We ordered chicken karage, salmon sashimi and the fatty salmon, stir fried udon, garlic ramen, and fried fillet fish. I think the downfall of new restaurants will forever be the to-go orders as they were very busy in-house and with takeout orders. We waited 50 minutes for our food. They are so, so, so efficient at serving, handling waitlists, preparation, etc. You can actually come here, sit at the sushi bar, eat and be out of there within 20 minutes. I feel like that's a bit rare to find a spot you could eat alone comfortably. In a 'fast casual' space though so don't expect a white tablecloth vibe - but you can get white tablecloth food. The rolls, to me, can be a bit 'over sauced' and getting the bento delivered was a miss - so I originally ruled this place out but stopped once in person and had an amazing nigiri experience. So it's now in the rotation permanently. The fish is excellent. We've gotten a few yakitori specials and they were really tasty. Another ambiance note - alameda is full of children. Like max child capacity. Last time I went I saw a child who had been doing some light screaming their entire meal go running full speed out of the door and fall butt first into a deep puddle. Between that and a phenomenal spread of nigiri and tempura, it was my top dining experience of the year so far. read more

Having grown up just a few blocks away from this plaza, I remember when Nob Hill first opened and a few of the businesses that have come and go here. I heard great things about Hashi Gawa and wanted to give it a shot. Inside Hashi Gawa is a modest space with a handful of tables and bar seating for 3 parties of 2 (if you leave a chair in between each group). I took my girlfriend to Hashi Gawa to celebrate her promotion a week ago on a Thursday at 7:30pm. The restaurant was about 70% full but we were lucky enough to snag a seat at the bar with the chef (Omakase needs to be at the bar, no exceptions!) We ordered the 10 piece omakase nigiri ($52 - what a deal!) and a garlic edamame to munch on. In retrospect I would've skipped the edamame given the strong garlic flavor but... we were starving! The chef welcomed us and first apologized for the wait (understandable for a new business). The next 40 minutes were pure bliss. My first omakase experience since the pandemic began did not disappoint. No matter how good a place is, to-go boxes really don't do the experience justice. Every single piece was fantastic but in particular, I really enjoyed the Aoebi, Kanpachi and Scallop. The chef was very friendly and accommodating by adjusting the wasabi levels (I wanted more whereas it was perfect for my girlfriend). We finished off the meal with a hand roll and some green tea ice cream. Would I go back? For sure! I would like to try the bento entrees and rolls as well but it'll be tough not to just spring for the omakase if the bar is open :) read more

I also ordered the oysters. They were good a few small shells but not unbearable. I also ordered a hamachi hand roll that was served as maki. Slight miscommunication but nothing to make a fuss about. Service was spotty. It got busy and the waitress took a long time to return to take my order of additional items. One of the chefs made it better by engaging and asking how my meal was and what was my favorite piece. Would definitely return. read more

Don't miss this hidden gem situated in the Nob Hill Foods plaza. Be prepared to wait a little for your food because every piece of nigiri sushi is made with detail and perfection by Chef Ricky. The rolls are also equally as amazing and delicious. My friends opted for the omakase special (great value for the quality of fish, presentation, and heavenly taste) whereas my wife and I went with some chef recommended rolls and hot appetizers. The baked scallop roll was fresh and tasty, and the grill/tempura squid combo was crunchy and flavorful. If you are looking for excellent quality and outstanding hospitality, this is the place to go. But if you are looking for cheap California rolls and a quick bite, this place may not be ideal for you. I believe it is only their soft opening right now, but when I went there it was already full house. Fortunately we reserved the bar seats so there's no wait. I heard about this new place and thought I'd give it a try. Is depressing a word that can be used to describe food? Got the angry fish, baked scallop, and double toro roll to go. I opened the box and immediately saw the small size of the rolls and lack of fish. Let's just say three rolls for their prices should not be able to fit in one box. I'm also confused about the double toro. I thought it was all tuna toro (which now that I continue thinking, is too good to be true). Half was tuna and half salmon, and even so I doubt either fish was quality toro. The baked scallop didn't look baked at all and seemed like one scallop used for the whole roll. The angry fish was better than the others. I'm not sure why sushi restaurants think california rolls are the only possible base for a roll, but it's getting old. I wouldn't mind less rice if fish was quality and quantity or if flavors were superb, sadly that wasn't the case. Much room for improvement. read more

Went here on recommendation from a couple friends who said it was good, and I would agree. We got a few rolls (my favorite was the Blue Fin Lover), as well as some hot appetizers. Everything tasted good. They have a lot of mango-themed rolls and while I love fresh mango, I don't necessarily love it on my sushi. Some tables around us ordered the omakase and it was really nicely presented. I think I'll be trying that next time. read more
