I contacted three other movers. Moses was the ONLY one who showed up. Moses himself, the owner. While his rate seemed high at first compared to some lower estimates, the "cut-rate guys" weren't willing to take the time to look at my actual place, Moses' price was at least on a Not To Exceed maximum basis, I decided to accept it since it was all-inclusive for a crew of four and no add-ons.. For example, others charge extra for things like wardrobe boxes, art packing, and the drill of getting the No Parking signs in place. The last thing I wanted to hassle with, standing in line at some City Hall office. Moses was true to his word. He sent four energetic, attentive and careful men who did not so much as crack a wine glass in the process. Each one was unfailingly professional and proud of caring for our possessions. First off, they are ridiculously expensive. A few months after they "helped" me move, I had to move again due to a job relocation. Same stuff. Same distance. Half the price with the second moving company who was awesome. Now, the extra cost with Hauling Moses would have maybe been tolerable if they had done a good job. Here's some of the post-move fun I got to deal with: Boxes clearly marked "Fragile" packed under furniture and other boxes, with contents that unsurprisingly didn't survive. Cheap masking tape used to hold furniture doors/drawers shut. They wrapped the whole items in that stuff. Still today I have bits of tape remnants stuck to furniture that I can't remove. The tape ripped the finish off an antique cabinet. This was after I was assured that the furniture would be wrapped in blankets or bubble wrap to protect them. Though every box was labelled by room, I got a random placement when delivered. Four boxes of gardening equipment in the master bedroom. A desktop computer on the kitchen island. Bedroom stuff/clothes at the bottom of 5-box tall piles in the garage. Which leads to.... Though every box was labelled by room, most everything was piled in a massive monolithic structure in the garage. Took weeks to finally get to the bottom of it and find the things I packed last so I could unpack them first. They were all at the bottom. A new Playstation V we had acquired right before the move arrived as an empty box with no more Playstation V. There was a water bottle full of urine stashed into one of my boxes. And I could go on and on. I did speak to the police about what rights I had here and was told there was nothing they could really do and that I should file a lawsuit or contact the BBB. I ultimately decided to not waste any more time or money on these jokers. Anyway, I guess I learned my lesson relying on Yelp 5 star reviews. Had much better luck via real person word of mouth. We had a great experience with Hauling Moses moving our entire 2 bedroom apartment from San Francisco down the peninsula, so we reached out again to discuss this move. Once again Tommy responded within an hour of us filling out the form, and Moses came down to take a look right away. This was a smaller in-town move, so we felt confident being able to move a lot of the little stuff ourselves. Moses gave us a very reasonable quote and we knew if we could move more stuff ourselves it might even cost less. They were even flexible with us moving our date up earlier with 24 hrs notice, which made the move so much more convenient on our end. Our experience was top shelf from the time Moses came to meet with us for an estimate until the time the team of movers offloaded our precious belongings over 300 miles away from our home of 30+ years where we raised our family/two daughters with abundant love, care, provision and dedication. It is not an exaggeration to say we have accumulated many valuable possessions, memories and well curated belongings. The Hauling Moses team was/is highly experienced, professional, trustworthy, and courteous. We have high end furniture and a piano along with expensive dinnerware and decor. There were 6 team members who carefully packed our belongings and offloaded in Paso Robles in our absence. We could not be there in person due to my trial schedule/work out of town, which added some stress. But the Hauling Moses team's conduct and care alleviated that stress. The team disassembled our piano and California King bed carefully in SF and re-assembled them well at our new home. We were not there when they offloaded but they worked away and kept us updated while we were in L.A. There are stairs in our new home which added a challenge given the time frame they were working with. (We had to change the original schedule due to a challenging work schedule out of town, and Hauling Moses accommodated us even though it might have caused them some complications. ) For full disclosure there were 2 dinner plates that broke in transit although they were packaged well - even so this is so insignificant in relation to the 99.9% that arrived intact. ***Strictly reviewing the estimate I just received, not the moving services*** I was quoted $1495 to move about 20 boxes, 1 dresser, 1 vanity (it's very light by the way, not heavy wood) from SF to Oakland out of a small bedroom. No additional furniture to haul, nothing excessively heavy. No furniture assembly is required. And there is elevator access at both places. I just...I guess I'm lost by the amount of the quote. It cost me slightly more to move my entire condo and a vehicle across the country. I've moved within the Bay Area twice now. Those times my place was fully furnished and I paid $1000 less than this quote each time. I guess I'm trying to figure out what I'm missing here. I've asked friends, family and 1 stranger if this quote was realistic. No one could justify me paying this. This is a true indication that price gouging is real. I believe they have great service here and I'll probably seek them out when I have a move worthy of a couple thousand dollars, but today isn't that day! Some of us have money to spare but that doesn't mean we want to burn it. Good gosh. read more

FYI, we did not book this company for our move so my review is only regarding their estimate process. I can only speak to my experience which was that the email quote we received was a fantasy. I can only assume this is a way to hook a customer. Our emailed quote said $900, and it included the size of apartment (750 sq ft) time (including back after move) and an hourly rate of $75 per hour per crew member for a 3 person crew. The actual estimate when they came on site was almost $4000 at minimum and over $4000 for the guarantee. This estimate now had a 4 person crew at $80 per hour. So the hourly went up $5 per crew member between the email quote and the in person quote along with an additional crew member. In all fairness, when I called out the discrepancy in hourly, after trying to explain it as a labor cost fluctuation, the original hourly was honored in the estimate. I don't know if this is common practice amongst moving companies and I'm sure their response would be "you get what you pay for" but suggesting that a 750 sq ft apartment would take 4 guys 7 hours to get on a truck seems excessive. My advice would be to be cautious and make sure you feel good about what you're paying for. From other reviews here it does sound like the crew does do a wonderful job. We were very happy with the guys from Hauling Moses. The crew was on time and Alek was professional, friendly and helpful. We hadn't managed to pack up everything in time, so they handled a lot of that. And they had an extra guy on the crew to help that we didn't originally agree on. But they didn't charge us extra for it. They handled getting all our stuff out of our 1 bedroom apartment down 3 flights using an outer stairwell and a tiny elevator. Honestly not sure how they got some of the furniture to the truck. I really liked that Moses met us weeks early and took a good inventory of our stuff. That allowed us to rethink what we wanted to move and what to get rid of. He even offered to take a couple of big items if we didn't want them and dispose of them. Great job. Just had my move this morning with Alek and his crew of two other guys. They arrived on time, energetic and ready to move. They packaged all the furniture neatly and with care, as well as handled our large TV and made sure that I was happy with their work. I'm glad I went with these guys as they were swift, careful, professional, and above all, gave me peace of mind that our furniture (including some large knick-knacks that I was really worried about transporting) is safe and sound. The guys were great too, came with lots of experience and we chatted about our random hobbies and interests while they were wrapping up furniture (including complimenting in my choice of furniture for ease of disassembly, hah). I even was speaking with one of them in Russian, not often you get Russian-speaking folks helping you move ;) Overall, I'd use these guys again for my next move. They nailed customer obsession in confirming several times where things would go, and nothing got damaged or lost in transit. They are more expensive than the other guys and it shows. I needed proof of insurance, and had several questions about the move. All of this was put to rest within 24 hours of tentatively scheduling. Two days before the move, one of their logistics coordinators called me to ensure we were ready, and to be available for any further questions. Tell me your moving company offered this much prep work, free of charge. On the day of the move, the team called and let us know when they would arrive. They were incredibly careful, both with our building, and our furniture. They were not the fastest movers I've ever had, and this is a good thing. Other movers break and scratch so many things from rushed carelessness. Everything was wrapped according to my specifications, with them asking specifically what I would and would not like wrapped as we went. They packed the truck, and then our storage unit like champions! There were more than 10 ft squared left in the unit thanks to how they packed it. The movers were courteous, kind, and funny, and made a usually stressful process an easier one. We paid more than one thousand dollars less than our estimated maximum, taking much fewer hours and supplies even with all the careful work the team did before moving our items. What a great experience! From the initial call to them to leading up to moving day and moving day itself. I'm a diy'er all the way from moving cross country and back using a pod and jengaing everything in moving in and out on my own. But with a young family, painful back and short move within the city their fair pricing and hussle we made it within our budget. They're accustomed to customers who sit back and let them pack and wrap everything but picked up on me helping out and advising on the level of protection on wrapping particular items to save on man hours. Left on their own they wrap valuables and furniture like it's their family heirloom. Even my ikea file cabinet was warm and cozy under its furniture blanket. So they don't skimp on protecting your stuff. We even put a couch out of a second story Victorian window after signing off on a waiver. So great to be able to get everything up and out within the day and focus on settling in because we all the know getting everything at the new place is only half the battle so having energy to unpack is nice. So if you are looking for a bargain basement bid, look elsewhere; however, Hauling Moses provides an absolutely excellent value, and very honest estimates -- and it should be noted that they provide a *maximum* figure, not a minimum... I have previously been grifted by other moving companies that added on all sorts of crazy fees, resulting in premium prices for tremendously poor service. This ain't that -- not only was the team who moved us absolutely stellar, they also came in significantly under the estimate. Ok, with costs out of the way, let's talk talking: I initially had a call with Tommy who asked me some questions, went over the service that they would provide and how things would go down, and then we set a date. He followed up with additional info via email and text, and it was very friendly, professional, and low-pressure. I felt like I could easily reach him whenever I had a question (via phone, text, or email), but he was so thorough in his communication that I didn't ultimately need to reach out for anything. The moving team was equally as professional and communicative: They sent me a message when they set out in the truck letting me know that they were on the way and when they were expecting to arrive, and at exactly 8 AM the truck and the crew showed up ready to dive in (our scheduled window was 8 AM - 9 AM). On to the actual moving part of the move: Alek and his team [J, T, and W] were exceptional. They came in, took stock of the place, and then they got to work. They checked in frequently enough to make sure we were happy with the way things were going but not so frequently that it was annoying. They moved with purpose -- no one was rushing around (other than me), and everything was done with practiced intent... These guys clearly knew how to get things done, and they were careful with our things as they were doing it. When we wrapped up at the old place, Alek and I walked around to make sure everything that was supposed to go was going. He checked in to make sure that all was well and that my expectations were being met. And with that confirmation, we were off to the new place. Unloading was swift and orderly, and again, I walked through with Alek to make sure everything was in the right place and as I wanted it to be (it was). We settled up -- well under the estimate -- and they were on their way. Absolutely amazing. Evan came out to do the pre-move check up to make sure that there was no crazy additional fee that will apply in case something were to happen. They called 2 days ago to confirm the move and give a reminder. On the day of the move, they showed up on time, and logged everything including, start time, moving time, break time, and end time. All the workers were very efficient. They were able to finish wrapping everything up in a hurry and they were very fast yet careful about moving everything. We had to hire movers for a very last minute move last month. I called Friday and the move happened on Sunday. Our hourly rate was very high. Higher than any other professional moving company we have hired over that last five years. I'm guessing it was partly due to the last minute nature of the move. We didn't have very many options so we ended up going with them. The three guys that moved us did a great job. They were careful and professional. We were given an 11 hour estimate but everything was done in 6 hours. My only complaint is the high hourly rate. It was supposed to include all the packaging materials but we ended up having a lot of our own, which they used, and so they didn't really have to use much of theirs. Overall great job. This company is absolutely amazing. Super fast response time on our initial inquiry. They came to our house, asked great questions, and provided us a not-to-exceed estimate that was fair and reasonable. We scheduled a date for our move from San Bruno to Concord, and they called two days ahead to confirm, and again 30-minutes before they arrived. Up until this point, we were impressed. Then the crew arrived. Four people who were remarkably professional, generous with their expertise and energy, and they treated our furniture and belongings like each piece was a priceless treasure. And they were kind, very friendly, and all very funny. The crew lead, Alek, is an amazing human being. He knows his trade, he leads by example and explanation, and he does everything that he asks his team to do. Moving into our new house was more of the same. In spite of the 30-degree increase in temperature, the whole team had energy and enthusiasm to spare. They did a thorough walk-thru to make sure we were happy with everything. Hauling Moses Moving was excellent. I needed movers to move me from a third-floor studio to a first-floor flat in the city. My experience was good from the start. With so many things to think about when moving, I wanted the selection of my movers to be as painful as possible. Once I sent out my inquiry for movers, Tommy and his team contacted me immediately with "no pressure" communications that prompted me to learn more. Communications after that were consistent right down to their follow-up after they came to my studio to provide a live quote. The estimate included a guarantee that it would not exceed a certain price and in fact, it did not. The movers were Carlos, Mario, and Walter, all friendly and so easy to work with and flexible when I needed them to help move a sofa into a truck that was not going to my new place. They were also very accommodating when I had other requests and were conscientious in double-checking that items were going to the right place. (Some of my items needed to be donated or trashed, along with going onto the moving truck. Mixing those up would have been sad.) I should note one thing that might be helpful: I had packed all my belongings, thinking that the movers would not need to do anything aside from carrying the boxes and loose items to the moving truck.
