Havana Cafe has been my favoite brunch spot for my wifey and I but everytime I go theres always some hidden exceptions. Today I went to havana for brunch and to my surprise the bar, which is on a first come first serve basis, had RESERVED seats. You can imagine how this was a surprise to me since i was a frequent visitor. I decided to ask the manager expecting this to be a mistake and behold it wasnt. The manager who was kind enough to speak to me told me he thinks the seats were being held for a party who was already waiting at the bar..Hmmm..So your party cannot be seated at a table unless everyone is present and the bar is first come first serve yet there was 3 RESERVED seats at the bar..the female at the door who seats you was kind enough to seat us at a table which reservations were late..Overall the food is great and the ambiance makes you feel at home. My Girlfriend and I went out last night to the Havana Cafe on East Tremont.The service was horrible. The food was okay. The waitress didn't pay no mind to us. Didn't once approach my table to ask if everything was okay? If we wanted anything else? The drinks was a waste. I have been here several times and never been disappointed. First off the atmosphere is amazing I really felt like I was somewhere else. Great bar scene!!! Next we have only eaten at the bar and the bartender is top notch. She fast and knows how to please. We have mostly eaten all the appetizers especially the mango ribs. Amazing!!! Has outside seating which is great, but for some reason we couldn't get it. Every time we go we cannot have outdoor seating. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't even that busy and we asked for outside seating. We were a party of four and the hostess said they didn't have a table for us, instead of going out to assess the situation. Needless to say she seated us inside in a cramped corner that I could hardly get to and as soon as the water came there was an available table for our party outside. We asked if we could move, while waiting for a response, another group who was already seated outside decided to switch places and took the spot we were asking to sit at. The waiter then offered us that groups old seating. We took it. The Table was off balanced and really cramped. Not to mention one of the people in our party had went to use the restroom. When she returned she informed us that the hostess, waitress, and waiters were talking shit about us and was pissed because we wanted to move to the seating that we had originally requested. Saying that we couldn't move. The customer is definitely not a priority here. We gathered our things and left. It really is a shame it has so much potential and used to have great food and service! Now they have just ok food, shitty service, stingy with their bread which was hard as a rock! Apparently you can only get bread if you order an entree! I walked in on a Wednesday nite, and the first thing I noticed was a full house and the aroma of garlic! That was a great sign of things to come. I ordered a glass of white sangria- REFRESHING and delicious! This was followed by an extraordinary meal of red snapper, yuca mofongo and salad. The food was some of the BEST Cuban I've ever had. I live in the Bronx not to far from Havana Café. My sister and her best friend frequent it regularly, so when they suggested that I try it just because I was excited. Then boom! life changing moment. I tried the steak sandwich. Now, there are days when I think about being a vegetarian or going back to being a pescatarian. Then a chill runs up my spine and I remember that if I do, I wouldn't be able to eat a Havana Café steak sandwich and that changes my mind every time. It is the most delicious steak sandwich I have tasted, possibly in my entire life. It makes me want to revert to the ways of the Cave people and just eat this sandwich every second, of every hour, of every day. read more

I went to Havana Cafe this evening with a Groupon and I must say, they don't need groupons to get people to eat there. My usual Cuban spot closed due to a fire and finally, my search is over! Hands down some of the best Cuban/Latin food you will find outside of Miami :-) Nice atmosphere, good wait staff, overall a great dining experience. I went up to the Bronx from Manhattan to experience this restaurant for a few reasons. The reasons being, I LOVE Cuban food, N.Y., L.V., wherever I have had it I have never been let down, I purchased a Groupon deal, and the prestigious Michelin Review that the restaurant had were all reasons. Sadly, I was let down though. The maduros were perfect, the chicharrón were nicely textured, beautifully presented and had no flavor. My date dipped his in the black bean sauce for flavor. You get bread (room temp), with black bean sauce for dipping. We enjoyed the sangria both white and red. We ordered two entrees, which were suggested by the hostess and are listed under the "Classics". They were the Pollo al Mojo, sliced chicken breast with lime-garlic marinade, and Camarones Enchilados, adobo rubbed jumbo shrimp with creole style sauce. I should have taken a picture. For the first time in my life...I left 95% of the food on the plate, and DID NOT want to take a drop home!!! The chicken was tough, tough, tough and lacking flavor. So, I ate the side of black beans, a little rice and all of the maduros. The shrimp dish was very lack luster as well and about 60% was left on the plate, and not taken home. I was very displeased by the experience and the waiter didn't help much when he responded curtly regarding my question about the white sangria. I asked about the flavoring because I read about unique sangria that they served there. I wanted to know if what they had that night was that flavor. Apparently that option is only available on Sundays. Bottom line: even at a discount, I felt cheated. Expectation, time spent, appetite not satisfied. Also, my guest was let down with the experience after their travel time spent, etc. P.S. This is "the" first time I have taken the time to post a review anywhere re a restaurant. The place and the staff are great. They make you feel at home. The food and drinks are fantastic. If I could give it 10 stars I would.

The Drinks are a 5 star and the ambiance a 5 star as well. However, the food wasn't the best and not my favorite. Not sure who the chef is, but they need to revitalize their menu. It took me a while to post this review because I absolutely love this place but here it goes. It gets a five star because the food is amazing good...We (my boyfriend & I) are locals have gone to Havanas Cafe plenty of times for dinner, just to hang, to celebrate birthdays it was one of our favorite spots. They're food is amazing and most staff are very nice, courteous and respectful. Food wise this restaurant is amazing, everything we have eaten is delicious. In September we went to celebrate my 35th birthday with family and friends. There was a misunderstanding with Mrs. Erica (bartender) about my cousins name, that's all it was a misunderstanding. Yet my boyfriend goes the other day and Fernando tells him he's not allowed in Havanas Cafe. We know you are only doing your job Fernando you are very nice. Now Mrs. Erica let's make this clear you were instigating and kept talking trash, I don't know you personally and don't care to, that was the first day I have seen you, you were very disrespectful and should learn some costumer service skills. Management nobody threatened her, nobody tried hurting her, absolutely nobody did anything against Mrs. Erica words were said and you Erica had a major part in that. Nobody escorted us out we decided to leave due to this disrespectful and problematic bartender. As a matter of fact the bald headed guy that works as security at Vapor Lounge came out and spoke to us, apologizing for what had happened and offered to take us personally to Vapor to then tell management a different story. This restaurant is amazing! The food is beyond delicious, it is season so that every part of your tongue gets to experience the food the way it is suppose to be eaten.. It is not greasy, the portions are just right. Atmosphere is very nice. It is very busy so be prepared to wait, but the food is worth the wait. Our waitress Isis, was very sweet and efficient. The food was exceptional. However, the service was absolutely awful. My family and I visited for a Sunday brunch recently and the wait was ridiculously long. The girl at the front told us that the wait would be 20 minutes. An hour and forty minutes later, we were finally seated. The manager was very apologetic and promised us free drinks, yet reneged when we were ready to order. He told us that he was kidding and that he couldn't really do that. Nonetheless, the food was amazing and no one in our party had any complaints about the food. In matter of fact, there was only praise for our meals. I was excited about Havana because of the great reviews and the location. Went for dinner after work on a Friday night after a coworker raved about how great her experiences were (she loves their brunch too). The place was very crowded and the music was loud but this was nice being that it was a Friday. As the night went on, the live DJ's music got louder (which was also cool. He had a great playlist). My disappointment is more around the service and my food. We had empanadas and bacalaitos. None were what I was expected. The empanadas were not good (that's a first!) And neither were the fritters. I almost forgot I was at a Cuban restaurant. I ordered Ropa Vieja which came with rice, black beans and maduros. It was tooooo salty and the rice was too sticky ("apatao" in ). I didn't enjoy my Cuban meal, and that's a first. My coworkers had a shrimp appetizer, salmon burgers and a kale chicken salad. Neither seemed very impressed. Service could use improvement as well. Our waitress was helpful when she eventually would come to us but there was too big a lapse between the times she came to check on us. Based on this experience I'm not sure I would recommend to anyone else. Nor do I know if I would return. read more

Visited Havana for the second time after having a really good experience the first time. Have to say the second time was definitely not as good as the first. The food was bland and lacked taste. I should have known to steer clear after the rude girl who we spoke to on the phone kept us on hold for 10 mins when we asked a simple question about reservations, and then came back on the phone with no answers and put us back on hold for 10 more mins because she didn't ask the manager yet and then finally hung up on us. We called back and she had a nasty attitude and put us on hold again and never came back on the phone! Over a simple question! That kind of nasty attitude is a great way to lose business and spread bad word of mouth. Horrible service!!! Food is bland here anyway. Hostess needs some manners. Excellent food, service and a great Groupon deal which the establishment did not make you feel like 2nd class citizens when we said we had one. Great choices of appetizers (Chicharron de Pescado, yummy) (Pastelon, so good with ground beef, stuffed maduros and melting cheese) enough for four of us, and they even allowed us to order the house special for a minimum amount. The food is generally good been going here since it opened however tonight I ordered a grey goose vodka martini the martini was well-made but the olives! I was so disappointed. I definitely think that Havana can do a much better job in providing appropriate martini olives instead of giving me Goya olives from the bodega.
