SENTRY - WATCHING RESTAURANTS Hawaiian Bros 4445 E Thomas Road Phoenix 85018 It was lunch time and companion and I were passing by and decided to stop. This is a relatively new store with a new concept. I enjoy good Hawaiian food if it is authentic as served in the islands. The most common is called the plate lunch. In Hawaii it consists of your protein, and usually 2 scoops of potato salad and a scoop of macaroni salad. Not exactly the right meal for a carb conscious person, but definitely a tasty meal. On entering this store we immediately noticed that there was no place to order from. Instead, there were large computer screens with items you could select from. While I am not from the modern generation that is fully computer literate, I had no problem figuring it out and ordering. I ordered the Kilauea Chicken Classic and a bottle of water. Companion ordered the Molokai Chicken Classic and a Coke Zero. Everything in the place is made for easy cleaning and non destructivity. The chairs are made of metal and are one size fits all. Unfortunately, they are extremely uncomfortable to sit in and if your rear appendage is slightly on the larger side it will not fit in any way and you will be left sitting on the edge of the chair. In due course our food arrived in plastic boxes. Not the end of the world, but it would have been nice if they had been marked so we knew which was which. Because the flavors were so similar it took a bit of time to figure out the foods. The Kilauea Chicken was O.K. but nothing to write home about. It came on a bed of rice along with a ball of rice and some macaroni salad that was great. Creamy and made like that served in the islands. The Molokai Chicken bordered on inedible. It was so overcooked that I had to stop and buy toothpicks on my way to remove the remnants from my teeth. Once again, it was served over rice with a ball of rice and the same, excellent macaroni salad. The macaroni salad was the best part of the meal! This was my first time and my teen's second time. She was adamant that the family give it a try and we're all glad we did. We wanted simple healthy and flavorful, something different than the typical unhealthy fast food places, and reasonably priced. We got exactly what we wanted and left satisfied! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable when explaining the menu. They also have two stations to order yourself. Hawaiian Bros Island Grill is fine, though I wouldn't call it "great". Placing an order was quick and easy, but not particularly friendly. No "hello", no smile. Nothing. Once ready, my Order was incorrect. No apology, but it was resolved quickly. Question: How much rice is needed as a side when the meats are already served on a bed of rice? I realize it's "traditional ", but seems like overkill. The Honolulu chicken was tender and good, but too sweet for my personal taste. The Luau pork was flavorful, but too salty. Macaroni Salad was simultaneously bland and too salty. I'm not sure how this is possible. There was a $0.50 upcharge for a Pineapple Skewer (not grilled) which was roughly equivalent to a single pineapple ring. (To substitute rice) Best item on the plate, but should have been included without the up charge. The Dole dessert (not described as "Dole Whip") was free with an account creation.. The Twist (1/2 pineapple and 1/2 "Tropical ") was light and refreshing. The portion size was more than ample. The facility was neat and clean with ever- so- slight Polynesian theme. Metal chairs were uncomfortable, but I doubt they'll be replaced anytime soon. High ceilings and all hard surfaces made for acoustics so loud, I couldn't hear the music over people's voices. I ordered DoorDash on Easter weekend because I didn't feel like going out. I ordered the kalua pig with white rice and pineapple spears. When I received my order, it was a nice generous portion of meat and a scoop of rice, there was more rice underneath the kālua pig and everything was ono (delicious)! I am from Hawaii and miss Hawaiian food when I am on the mainland. This is a good place to eat, considering what I ordered. Unfortunately, I have to be gluten free so I am unable to try some of the other entrees as they use a lot of soy sauce or teriyaki sauce, that has gluten in it. I will be visiting this restaurant soon to add to my review. The pork was tender and juicy, and the rice was similar to sushi rice, dense and kind of sticky, the way we make it in Hawaii. On a fast food scale, the food is a 7/10, on a Hawaiian bbq food scale it's a 5/10. I don't want to be harsh on this but it's just flat compared to different Hawaiian bbq places. Stopped here for dinner with 15 other people, they have 2 kiosks to order on and there was one person at the register. She was super friendly and kind! Looking for a quick bite with two hungry teens after a birthday party, pulled in here on a whim because we all love Ono Hawaiian BBQ and thought this would be similar. The Pros: Employee at the counter was *super* nice and checked in on us after we got our food, kiosk ordering is pretty easy, Honolulu chicken is FREAKING AMAZING, fountain drinks were good, place was super clean and pleasant to eat in. Parking is also plentiful. Three stars for that. The Cons: Mac salad was terrible - too much mayo and no sweetness, only tasted like black pepper. That's a key element to get right :( Kid and I both ordered the Value Meal size, thinking usually the portions at these places are HUGE. We literally received *maybe* half a cup of chicken pieces (which were excellent) and two small scoops of mac salad (which I paid $1 extra for, I have regrets). It was the size of a kids' meal, which would have been fine if it weren't $12 for the food and a drink. Need an option for 'extra meat' and some indication that the Value meal is TINY. I guess we'll stick to Ono, though the chicken itself was much better than any I've had anywhere. Or maybe they'll have a 'chicken only' option with enough meat to be filling. In my opinion this spot is pretty underwhelming. The food was sub par and won't be coming back. The chicken was really chewy and the pork lacked any flavor. The rice was ok and seemed fresh, but sort of weird they pile it under the meat and then more off on the side. Mac salad was not seasoned so that was disappointing. read more

We were visiting from California and found this little gem. The exterior is really new and sleek and so is the interior. It was a Monday night, so a lot of people were picking up orders for takeout, but we dined outside, where there were plenty of seats. The cashier was exceptionally sweet and helpful. She showed us how to order on the tablet and was really engaging. We ordered two combination plates and a smaller one-item plate. One was with the huli huli chicken and luau pig and the other with the Molokai and Honolulu chicken. We also got the dole whip. I think it was strawberry, but it was delicious. Our favorite was the signature huli huli chicken. Our least favorite was the mac salad. It didn't taste like the Hawaiian mac salad that we are used to, so that was the only thing that could use some improvement. Have driven by many times seeing what the old Schlotzsky's restaurant on 44th St and Thomas Rd Spam Masubi meat was on the thinner slice of spam and was slightly dry on a slab of sticky rice. Overall portion was on the smaller side. Huli Huli Chicken inside substituted the scoop of rice for another scoop of macaroni salad and was charged an additional $1. Chicken had alot of sauce which was a bit much for me, macaroni salad was slightly runny liquid wise, could not tell if it was caused by the mayo. Again seemed like all portions were on the smaller size. Honolulu Chicken was another plate meal on the smaller portion size. I would think they might do what other new restaurants do, initially when they open up give generous portions and then later scale down, if they scale down from these portions it will not be a great deal left. This restaurant's meal plates are all chicken, would expect at least some Galbi Short Ribs or other meats. Good luck on your continued business read more

This was my first time trying Hawaiian Bros. Upon entering, I was greeted with an "aloha" by the cashier and was given help on the menu and what to order. I ordered the Hulu Hulu chicken plate, which is teriyaki chicken that comes with rice and macaroni pasta salad. The chicken tasted SO good. It could have been a little hotter temperature-wise because within a few minutes it was kind of like warm, but it was really good nonetheless. I gobbled it down in a matter of minutes. I really liked that there weren't any fatty/gross parts of the chicken. It came with an extra teriyaki sauce. The inside of the restaraunt is a great vibe. They play island music and the furniture and decorations are Hawaii-themed. I can definitely see this place becoming a go-to for comfort food! read more

We had a VERY good experience here! Friday night, not busy, quick service, friendly staff and DELICIOUS food! We got the Huli Huli chicken which is honestly the most authentic Huli Huli chicken I've had, which says a lot considering I used to live on Maui. We also had the Kalua pig and Honolulu chicken. All 10/10! The rice was cooked perfectly and the veggies were yummy. And to top it all off we got the Dole Whip twist which was incredible! I highly recommend this place! read more

The portions of the plates are smaller than what I expected. It was good, pretty standard food. I subbed one of the rice scoops for vegetables and it was an additional $1 charge. The worker was super nice and very friendly. The store is super clean and has lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Decided to try out Hawaiian Bros' newly opened location at 44th/Thomas since I was already close by shopping. Placed to go order through the convenient drive through lane. Here's the 411: Service: very personable and friendly. Also fast to deliver food once I made it to the service window. Food: I ordered the classic Molokai Chicken . Sweet and mildly spicy. It was good, nothing outstanding, pretty average. It was served on white rice and there was another scoop of white rice as well as a scoop of a macaroni salad. A little overkill on the white rice. Would be better to have a couple slices on pineapple or some of the grilled veggies instead of all the rice. And personally the macaroni salad not my cup of tea. The sauce is sorta mayo like with salt and pepper in it slathered over macaroni. I know this is a traditional Hawaiian side but I have had better versions than this one. Ambiance: Just went through the drive through, however area was clean, menu was very clear, concise and understandable. Pretty short and sweet. It's a 3 stop process. 1. Order via intercom, 2. pay window, 3. Food service window. I might try Hawaiian Bros again if I am in the area for Target or Costco. Had I not been mezmorized by the soft tone and kind voice of the lady in the box, I may have realized that what she told me was that "the chicken lays atop a bed of rice but also comes with a side of rice, did [I] want to sub?".... oh, yea, I was paying no attention to the words spoken and decided to get the side, in addition to. A few things I am trying to keep in mind... the first is the fact I don't meats often and another is that this was a convenient drive through with lovely customer service. With that said, it tastes like a convenient drive through with lovely customer service. It is apart from the norm and switches things up a bit. They also offer a nice array of vegetables in their variety and everything was packed full of flavor. The chicken was.... chicken. A bit tough for me to eat the entirety of the portion (I got a classic size), fortunately I had the veggies to assist with the last few bites. It was dry and I am not convinced that could be avoided with the cut and cook... I am also not sure if that is how cooked chicken normally tastes or if they make sure everything is cooked throroughly? The mac salad was basic and palatable, I really like the pepper(?), it was creamy. The veggies are in fact nicely seasoned and come with summer squash, zucchini, carrot, onion, broccoli and maybe another one or two... The plate, the extra side, no drink for about $17. I ordered the Hulu Hulu chicken and the Molokai Chicken. Very very and I do mean VERY subpar flavor for both items. I HIGHLY not recommend to coming to this place for Hawaiian food. I honestly do not even know where to start. My experience at Hawaiian Bros was beyond disappointing. We arrived around 11:15 a.m. and no one was in the lobby, so I figured it would be a quick in and out. Instead, it turned into one of the most stressful lunch stops ever and made us late for our report time. Apparently, we came right after a big catering order, but no one thought to give us a heads up that it would delay everything. We waited with zero communication or updates. The guy at the front was super nice, and I could tell he was doing his best, but he was literally running the entire front by himself. He was taking orders, handing out food, and dealing with online pickups all while people started piling up behind us. When I told him we needed to void our order so we could leave, he had to step away to find a manager who also seemed completely swamped. We ended up leaving without our food just trying to make it to work on time. I called later hoping they would at least acknowledge how frustrating that was, but there was no apology or empathy at all. I understand that lunch rushes happen, but this was not just busy. It was poor management and no communication. The saddest part is the staff member at the front was trying his hardest, but he clearly needed help. I left hungry, late, and irritated. I'm a frequent customer of Hawaiian Bros and usually love their food, but my experience at the 44th St. location was absolutely terrible. My burrito was cold. The tortilla, the meat, everything. When I went back through the drive-thru to let the young lady know, she had an attitude and gave me terrible customer service (October 31st Window Clerk). They remade the burrito, but the second one wasn't any better. The meat was still cold and even tasted burnt. To make things worse, it was missing the mac that should have been inside. I also ordered the Classic Honolulu Chicken, and that too tasted burnt. I've been to other Hawaiian Bros locations and never had a problem like this. The food is usually hot, fresh, and portioned well. This location completely missed the mark. Zero out of ten. I won't be coming back to this one. read more

It is the only Hawaiian place I know of that is open after midnight , but overall I do not recommend it. Please allow customers to pick up their order in the drive thru or make sure you do walk out there order when you tell them you will. Yesterday, my son and I, he is visiting from Bangkok, had a quick, late, lunch at Hawaiian Bros latest place just above the I-10 in Avondale. Pretty basic Plate Lunch menu which consists of some kind of meat over rice, a scoop of white rice and a scoop of mac salad. Back home it often has a side of Kim Chee for a little spice. I got the Molokai Chicken as it said is was spicy, son got Luau Pork (Kalua Pig back home), and a spam musubi. Plates came as described, they had no Tabasco, but did have a sriracha packet so I got that. Put that on the chicken and the salad. Then some shouyu on the rice and meat rice. Without that the chicken was just grilled chicken. All in all, the plate was OK, did remind me of home by the presentation. Sons, pork was good he said, agreed that it was a haole-fied version of the plate lunch...which is OK as mainlanders sometimes find local food..Different. It was good and fun, we enjoyed our meal together. We had two plates, two drinks and one spam musubi, bill came to $37 with tip. I bit high but folks need to make a living. read more

I was hesitant because I felt like no one would remember or write down my situation, but she assured me it would be okay. First time visiting Hawaiian Bros Island Grill. I was greeted by hostess Jessica P. Jessica was an outstanding host. She explained the menu and later was very attentive. I dined-in and ordered the Honolulu Chicken plate. The Styrofoam plate had 3 sides: 1 scoop of white rice, 1 scoop of a cream-base macaroni & the Honolulu Chicken, placed over white rice. the dining area there has a soda machine,napkins & plastic forks. There's also a row of teriyaki sauces to choose from. The Honolulu chicken was so tender. The scoop of rice and the scoop of macaroni complimented the main course very well. Be prepared, the dining area had the central air on. It was freezing in there. All the restaurant's locations are open 10 am to 3 am, Sunday to Saturdays. There's a 4 digit number to enter the restrooms. The one thing I wanted all you Yelpers to keep in mind is that the food is really great and well prepared. Jessica P., the hostess was amazing. The challenge here is the portions are not as plentiful as Ono. It's worth checking out, but for what it cost, you'll get more for your money at Ono Hawaiian. Also, Ono's selection is broader. The kiosk ordering process was super simple and efficient. The delivery of our food was prompt and Nene was very welcoming and friendly. We ordered the Keiki with the Honolulu chicken and the swirl dessert. It was a perfect sized kids meal. We opted in for the two for 20 plate dinner. We tried the Molokai and Kilauea Chicken. The Kilauea had a little spice which was nice. The rice was fluffy and flavorful. The macaroni salad was heavy on the mayonnaise but delicious. We were adventurous and got a side of spam musubi.
