Writing this review as I will be checking out tomorrow morning. I cannot speak more highly of the staff. Polite and helpful throughout. The outdoor amenities are five star quality as was the staff at the Tiki Bar. The breakfast buffet left a lot to be desired considering the price but again, the staff was just amazing. The kids loved the Dolphin Encounter and the trainers were thrilled to answer all our questions thoughtfully. concerns as to the small confined areas the dolphins are kept in were answered knowledgeably and you could tell that they are absolutely devoted to these magical creatures. The reason I cannot give this resort a five star rating is the room service. No room service to be had and somehow this resort feels they cannot provide soap bars or bottles of shampoo/rinse. They use dispensers with unknown products and worse, way worse .... They were empty! The a/c unit as well as a few of our family's were not cooling properly. A resort of this caliber can do better and should. read more

Our visit to Hawk's Cay was fun for the family, but we won't be back. We stayed in a Harbor Villa, and arrived on a Saturday. We arrived around 6 with three small children, and had to wait for our Villa to be cleaned. Once we were permitted in our unit that had been "cleaned," the floors were filthy. The unit was uncomfortably furnished, and the ceiling fan on the porch was not usable. The downstairs bedroom was extremely small, and the closet was locked as the owner's closet. We had 3 bedrooms, two closets, 10 coat hangers. No hair dryer was in the master bath. The ice maker made very small amounts per day, so we bought ice. There were not enough utensils to set a table for six people. We had one small pot, one medium pot, a skillet, and a baking tray. It's hard to cook with so few supplies. We had no hot pads, oven mitts, bottle opener, or cork screw. The service was terrible. We had no washcloths when we arrived, and they were finally delivered on our third day. They ran out. (You have to be kidding.)The children's activities were a joke. They were poorly planned and even more poorly executed. For example, "Walk the Plank" consisted of one turn per child going down a slide. Items in the scavenger hunt were placed out of reach of the smaller children. (Really?) We were here 8 years ago, and the difference is mind boggling. So much is out of date and poorly maintained. The kids enjoyed the pool, and it was well maintained. The entertainment at the pool was fun. Bottom line: Hawk's Cay is not worth the prices that they charge. It's an outdated, poorly run resort with lovely scenery and nice people. read more

If Yelp would let me give this a 4.5 I would. Hawks Cay Resort was the highlight of our week-long Florida Keys vacation. We stayed here for two nights and wished we had stayed longer. If you have kids, they will love it here, as will adults. There are so many things here to do for people of all ages. Great drinks, a variety of pools (both family and adults-only), tennis, basketball, volleyball, mini golf, etc. You could easily spend a week here and not be bored. The rooms are also enjoyable. We had a family room which came with bunk beds for the kids. The only complaint with the room was that it was a bit dark, even in the middle of the day. May just be the room we had which was tucked away from the prime views. The only other complaint, which is why I can't give this a full 5, is that if you do stay here more than a couple days, you will get bored of the food. The menus are the same at the various grills. There is a fine dining restaurant on-site however I don't see this being a place anyone with kids would want to visit. If you are visiting the Keys and looking for family fun, you won't get any better than Hawk's Cay. read more

Overpriced and underwhelming. That's the gist of how I felt about this resort. For context we stayed in the main building not the condos. Pros: -Many nice and helpful staff members -Beautiful grounds -Lots of on-site activities- tennis courts, spa, kids club, swim with dolphins, restaurants Cons: -All pools/jacuzzis close at 5:30 (even in the adults only section. HUGE miss...it wasn't even totally dark then. -Room was tired with lots of repairs needed. Drain in tub was corroded and you couldn't even close it, pull out mirror in the bathroom was broken, umbrella on our walk out porch was broken. -Requests for towels, emptied trash cans, basically anything for your room must be made 24 hours in advance. I get not cleaning the room every day with staffing shortage but at an average of $700 a night I should be able to get basic services without a days notice. -Tiki bar by adults only bar closed early. Want to say around 6PM. -turned off the water cooler by the pool at night so you can't refill in the evenings. Why?!! -Missing all small personal touches. Most resorts have nice fruit flavored water coolers, special robes in the room or other small touches to make them feel a step ahead of normal lodging. As someone who travels 20-30 overnight business trips a year I found this place felt like a Hilton Garden Inn- nice'ish in an economy way BUT at a premium price. - Spa service OK but spa facility was meh. No pool, no jacuzzi, no steam room (if it was there they didn't show us), no light snacks and a small waiting room. They did offer flavored water and hot tea which was nice. At the end of the day this is a one and done trip for me. It wasnt horrible but I definitely didn't think it felt worth the money. The pool/jacuzzi closure was the biggest disappointment of the entire trip. I was traveling with a large group and the sentiment was shared by all of us (about a dozen). Many in the group had previously stayed at Cheeca Lodge and/or The Islands and recommended them over Hawks Cay. read more

We just finished a week vacation at Hawks Cay. We stayed in The sanctuary Villas. I would never stay at Hawks Cay resort again. The service at all pools was absolutely terrible! Bartenders were rude. Food at the pool was expensive and awful!! We got nothing that we ordered. We called to get someone out to our villa 3 times thru out the week to check the wifi and the pool, no one ever came out. Just overall for the money there are A LOT more options that are much nicer and friendlier!!! The only star I am giving this resort is for the Angler and Ale restaurant. It was good and the service was good there. Other than that, do not waste your money! It is not worth it! read more

The best part of staying at Hawks Cay was that they had 3 bedroom condos for rent for a great family vacation. However it all went down from there. The last time we were here we had 3 bedroom villa with 2 king beds and one room with two twins. This time we have 2 bedrooms with king beds and a single bed in the third bedroom. That forced one of our daughters to sleep on a horrible pull out sofa bed. We arranged for daily housekeeping but they never showed up unless we called to complain. We ate breakfast in their buffet the first day. The place was dirty, not enough staff or plates. Horrible experience for $24 a head. This will he the last time we come here for our annual adult family vacation. We complained to the front desk and asked for a manager to call us. Never happened. read more

2nd time here. The overall is nice but our rooms had minimal hot water, the ice in freezer was off almost tastes moldy, and the tv in master was not working. Bummer for late night. It's a nice place for a getaway and relaxing weekend, but these maintenance issues should be tended to! Also, really busy during summer season. read more

Our third and final family trip to Hawks Cay We are a family consisting of 4 Kids under 9 and 2 parents, a single parent with 4 kids 22 to 17 and 2 grand parents. We came to Hawks Cay to be together and reconnect as a family . We booked our stay months in advance and were told that we would have side by side townhomes. When we arrived we were told that there were 2 town homes BUT NOT together as . Additionally the grand parents were assigned to a room near the pool but in the adult section of the hotel so they were now NOT easily accessible to their grandchildren as they were not even able to freely see them in their room. When we arrived it was later in the afternoon and we dropped our suitcases and headed out to find a Resteraunt after a long day of travel. After dinner we arrived back to the townhouse and discovered that the TVs were not operational and we had to stay up till after 11 pm to wait to have them repaired, not an easy task for little ones and 2 tired parents. Eventually the got fixed The next morning while using the bathroom I discovered NOT ONE, but a pile of multicolored pubic hairs piled in the corner of the bathroom obviously from weeks of different guests who had used the townhouse. As politely as I could I called the desk and explained the situation and asked for someone who could come in and clean the bathroom for my children " who do not have This type of body hair yet. After waiting 3 hours I went down to the desk with pictures and asked if this would be acceptable for their family and they then apologized and said that the manager would call me within a few minutes. 2 hours later no call, I go back , still no housekeeping and I need a shower. I catch the manager and showed him the pictures , he looked and listened , He acted as if he was Being so generous offering me a COMPLIMENTARY " cleaning of the bathroom. I was shocked and couldn't believe he called it complimentary. The house cleaning manager eventually came , apologized and removed the disgusting hair ball smear in the corners of the bathroom and called it a day. I never asked for anything for free , I just asked for what was right and gave them several chances to make it right and the finally did. It shouldn't be this tough, 2 days later the toiled is running , I called twice and fixed it twice, I'm through here, let it run, I'll close the door. If it floods, it floods. I'm through. These townhomes are tired, beat on and dirty and NOT CHEAP to stay in . I should have learned from my last rental here 3 years ago when we rented a big pool home on the resort and when we arrived there was still food in the fridge, stains on the tired couch and chair and makeup and hairs on one of my kids pillows. We had to shame them into coming back in to wipe the counters, empty the fridge and dishwasher and put clean sheets in the guest room . I tried to give them a second chance and chalk the last experience of as they were having a bad week. They need to get their act together . This is not how you treat your guests. I can't say I'd recommend this place to anyone I know. They act like they care but they really don't. read more

This would have gotten 5 stars, because the resort is absolutely beautiful, but there were two incidents that bothered me. First off upon checking in we were told to stop by the bar for our welcome drink. By the way the concierge made it sound the drinks would be free. We ended up having them being charged to our room. At 8:45 AM on our check out day someone kept ringing our door bell. We declined to answer and the person I opened the door anyways. They then stated is your doorbell broken? I responded by stating no I was sleeping. The person then mumbled something in a very rude manner and shut the door. Horrible way to wake up when checkout isn't till 11. They should know which rooms are vacant. read more

Hawk's Cay has the potential to get a higher rating, but as it stands I will not be returning. I stayed in the Island View King, and the room itself is gorgeous. It has a large, sumptuous bed, a huge bathroom with a ton of counter space and a private little space to do makeup, an extremely large and nice shower with a place to sit down, and a "private" toilet. I love the private toilet, because it is in a room off of the bathroom and it has a door that shuts. The "Island" view is more of a "parking lot view" but it doesn't bother me that much. The room has plenty of outlets by all of their tables, so it's possible to plug in all your devices at once. The maid that comes is very thorough, and the room is sparkling everyday. Now the reason why I will never be back: -The try to charge you $100/day for "expenses". They put it on your room key card. That wouldn't be bad, in fact it may be easier, but I am glad I told them not to do it, because everything here sucks and I would not buy it. -I have never been to the keys, so I assumed they had a beach. They do not. In the pictures that Hawk's Cay has on it's website, they show a "lagoon" and it has a little strip of beach. I went to said lagoon. The "beach" is concrete covered in a thin layer of sand. The lagoon is little more than a stagnant pond, and you are NOT allowed to swim in the ocean. -The activities seem plentiful on the brochure, but in reality they are overpriced imitations of what you can get on another island, or on the mainland itself. The dolphin swim, which I was looking forward to, takes place in a very small enclosure. You can go to Key West or Key Largo and do one of their dolphin swims, which are the same price, but you get a better experience. -The food is absolutely, unequivocally, HORRIBLE. DO NOT EAT HERE. I paid $20 per person for a breakfast buffet. The scrambled eggs were hard, and while they seemed to be covered in butter, it was actually covered in a paste like substance. The bacon was hard, and cold, the pancakes were thin and resembled a crepe in texture. The pastries were not flaky and were very bland. The toaster, for the bread, on the first pass through will not completely toast the bread, but the second pass will scorch it. The only good thing is the fresh squeezed oj, which is absolutely delicious. On Islamorada, you can get several restaurants for much cheaper, but of a much better quality. Chef Michael's, which is comparable in price to Alma, is excellent, and is in fact a little bit cheaper. Do yourself a favor and go here. Overall, the room is great and it could make a really nice hotel, but it's not a resort. I wouldn't even use this place as a hotel because it is an hour away from all the really nice destinations. I booked this and expected to stay on Duck Key, on all the "fun" things they had in their website, but in reality there is nothing to do here. Do not waste your money. read more

Ed the Dock Master shop was a salty person! This is the second time putting my boat in the water, the first time was one of the best experiences that someone could have I didn't catch the guys name but he was built like a NFL line backer. He was very helpful and nice treated you like a customer. This guy Ed was one of the rudest people I have came in contact in the keys this week. Let me get back to the task at hand to explain why he sucks as a employee, after I asked him that I would like to use the dock to retrieve my boat out the water he acted like I asked to barrow his 1994 Honda Civic for the weekend. Finally after he got off the computer looking at his dream date on Facebook he unlocked the gate for me. Then after that I wanted to fuel up my boat before I left, I pulled up my boat to the pump he said I wasn't close enough to the pump that has a hose that can reach the other side of the resort. I backed my truck maybe 12 inches and he said STOP! It doesn't end there he kept mumbling unknown words while I am there. My friend that joined me for the weekend of fishing stated that he was dumbfounded by his shitty work ethic. I have stayed at Hawks Key in the past and didn't mind the over price food and the 18 dollar drinks but I probably won't find me or my family back there again. I recommend anyone that is looking for a good local family owned boat marina about a mile up the road. They are all very nice and helpful. We stayed at Hawk's Cay for 5 nights in the main hotel and I would go back. The resort is gorgeous. A few tips: They charge you $29/day which supposedly includes gratuities for the bellmen and valet. They also include gratuity for the breakfast place, the Beach Grill, and Alma (I believe). This is however, not included in the $29/day - it is simply added to the check at those places. What? The food selection is definitely lacking if you stay more than a few days and are looking for variety, so be sure to venture 5-10 minutes to Marathon for many more options. Rent bikes at the Indies Club to get out and explore the island. Multi-million dollar houses are on the island, and it was really fun to explore on a tandum bike ($30/24 hour rental). Sit outside Alma/the main lobby area at night by the fire. Perfect atmosphere. Check out the Dolphin Connection on site and even if you don't do one of the experiences, you can stand alongside the dock and watch others - basically a free dolphin show as they jump and splash and obey the trainers commands a few times a day. We did end up getting in the water and swimming with them (very awesome, but have nothing to compare it to since it was our first time). All in all, a very relaxing, fun-filled getaway. read more

I love the property, lots of activities and the various room types are great for a couple or a family. The main building is beautiful and the pools have a great set up. A couple of things -The facilities (all of them) seem too small for the amount of people that stay here. We went to the main pool at about 4pm (expecting it to be winding down) and we still couldn't find a proper lounge chair. The pool was PACKED with people (think the Caddy Pool Day in Caddy shack). -The towel check out system. This is the first time I have ever stayed at a resort that required you to "check out" towels. You have to stand in line, fill out a form that is kept in a file-a-fax and you get charged $25 if you don't turn them back in. To turn them back in you must wait in another line and make sure they can find your card. The people in front of me had their card lost and had to stand there forever (with their kids in tow) while they searched all the cards. People don't pay $499 per night for a room to steal towels. Have some faith in your customers. We will def come back to the keys and would come back to Hawks Cay but we we wouldn't eat here (see review of Ocean) and we would probably only use the public areas during non-peak times. read more

I'm torn on this place. It is a very dated hotel. While it seems nice, upon closer inspection the place is in need of an update. The service was EXTREMELY EXTREMELY EXTREMELY slow and annoying. I've never had my name repeated to me soooooo many times. If she didn't focus on saying my name so many times I could have been checked-in in half the time. Then I get to our room and neither key works. I have to go back downstairs to get them corrected and they now have a line of about 10 people waiting to check in. They ignore me for a while, so I barged into the back office area to get one of the 4 people's attention standing around chatting. This got the front desk's people's attention finally and a few minutes later a manager (one of the people holding the wall up with their butts) fixed it. The kid's pool area is very misleading in their pictures. It isn't a pool, it is a splash pad area basically. I would've been happier staying at a Holiday Inn Express than at Hawks Cay Resort. read more

Hawk's Cay was the site of one of the business conferences I had attended. It was a very clean place overall, with a nice private secluded feel to it. I wasn't too big on the cleanliness of the rooms. Our room smelled funny and the armchair had a funky stain on it. I won't venture into what the stain was but was quite disappointed that they would not exchange the room for us. They stated that they were booked so it was just too bad. They just took the chair out of the room and did not bring back a replacement - no extra ones were available. No comp, no additional amenities, nothing. The really upsetting part was that I knew they had more rooms at a higher price available, but that was not offered as a choice. I also met another person on the premises that was accommodated for a room change. But that's ok, I just will never give them any business in the future. read more

Though Hawks Cay is certainly not a terrible resort, it is certainly mediocre. We stayed in the Harbor Village section of the resort. The view is wonderful, with water flowing by your townhouse villa. There are plenty of tropical fish to see in the harbor itself, which made for a nice relaxing time-killer. The villa we were in did not match the pictures on the website or our expectations. The main room and kitchen are acceptable, but the bedrooms are stuffed with queen beds when they are sized to fit doubles. We are physically fit individuals and could not squeeze between the bed and the exit to the upstairs patio. Bathrooms are equally small. We could not stand directly at the sink due to the door being in the way. Our tub was in dire need of re-caulking. More is expected from a "luxury" resort. One shouldn't say "yuck" in a place such as this. The air conditioning system is terribly loud. It starts with a bang and ends with a sound of cracking drywall. This woke us up three to five times each night we were here. Trash is NOT picked up from the villas, nor do you receive room service included with the resort price (you still pay the daily resort fee, though!) read more

Gorgeous resort with beautiful grounds and exquisitely appointed rooms. There is something for everyone here. We booked for just one night passing through and ended up staying two because we loved it so much. My kids loved the pools and all the activities they have going on for them at the salt water lagoon. But I could always steal away to the adult pool when I was tired of hearing teenagers! I like the saltwater lagoon because my kids could snorkel there without the fear of being in the ocean, it was a nice alternative. The paddleboard rentals are fun too! The tram runs often and takes you around the property. So many things to do and the staff was always super friendly. I highly recommend the Kid's Camp too! We did half days and they had so much fun they were bummed when I picked them up and asked if they could go the next day! Can't ask for more than that Special Note: this place knows how to blackout! I am a travelin' girl and this hotel's window and curtains system is unmatched. Not a spec of light seeps through. Awesome! We slept in late everyday. It was a great bonus! read more

We really love this place and although there are major pros, there are also cons. This is the kind of place you don't have to leave. They have plenty of activities for the entire family. Take advantage of them, there is a $47 resort fee. We have stayed at 3 different room options over the years. This stay, we chose the villas. There is NO room service or no cleaning service. Only towels and garbage pickup. Should have read the fine print, or lack of. It didn't state there wouldn't be. Coffee machine, no coffee. Bring some febreze too. You can order food from the restaurants but you will have to pick up. You do get amazing views, there is a small pool near by and beach like areas to get into the bay. Others came prepared with kayaks and floats. There is no bbq allowed back here but you can walk to the marina to grill. Parking is included. Trillions where available but they did NOT come every 15 minutes as promised so we walked...it's a bit of a long one, especially when you have kids and stuff to carry. I enjoyed my recent stay at Hawks Cay in Duck Key. It's a SPRAWLING compound -- a bunch of tiny condo-looking units that are intertwined in a jungle of trees and lush plants. It has a fitness center, a Starbucks, and a really nice pool/lagoon area. You can also eat at Ocean (good spot!) for breakfast, which was delicious, and other meals... The negatives: -A/C is spotty. Went off during the night, left my family and I feeling hot and sweaty. Then, it'll OVERwork and you'll be really cold during the day! -Walking: if you're closer to the main office and area, you're set. If you're a bit further away (Rm. 7018), it's at least a 5-8 minute walk to anything. I didn't mind, but you might... -"Personal Hot tub"- False. No hot tub. It's a little, tiny 4 foot pool of water that wasn't heated at all. Odd. -Shower was clogged upon first use. -Don't upkeep your unit a lot. We really enjoyed our visit to Hawks Cay Resort and will be back next year! We stayed in the Marina Village. I would recommend this accommodation to a family with 2 kids and 2 adults. Any more than 2 kids and 2 adults would be a tight squeeze. The rooms were nice, and "normal clean". Do not expect immaculate, but this is - like another reviewer said - a great place for a family who is busy and more into the activities than into sitting around the room vegetating. The activities were a close 2 - 3 minute walk from our villa no matter which direction we went. Our youngest daughter loved the pirate ship spray park. Our oldest daughter enjoyed the pools and hot tubs. We enjoyed the Indies Club as a family. There are games for the kids to play, ice cream on tap, and lots of activities to indulge in. There are so many pools to choose from, you can find what you want - seclusion, open into the sunlight, shaded, or whatever you enjoy the most quite easily. The salt water lagoon was really cool. It was a nice sheltered area for us to bring a sand bucket and toys to make sand castles with our youngest while the oldest rented a SUP and kayak to tool around the lagoon. From what I could tell, there are shade umbrellas and cabanas galore all around the various pools. Lots of lounge chairs available for everyone. At the main pool, there is also a fire pit inside a water feature. It was nice to get warm in front of on a windy/chilly day. Our family enjoyed the Dolphin Connection very much. It is pricey, but worth it! We did both types of experiences (but not the trainer for a day) and enjoyed every minute. What a cool experience! The front desk staff, and all the staff in general, were wonderful. Every time I called with a request, someone came out immediately. We had some issues with our toilets and shower being plugged from the prior occupants, but they had no problem fixing those issues right away. I also requested a broom and dustpan to sweep up around my villa and they had no issues bringing that over. Our only complaint during the trip was that the food is desperately lacking... I don't expect to pay cheap prices for food and drinks on a resort like Hawks Cay, but the resort prices for what you get was a little over the top. Luckily, we had Yelp on hand and found other restaurants in the area to try that really made it worthwhile. read more

Family vacation in the keys... Loved the location of resort. Took a great day trip to Key West and still less than two hours from airport. Mixed feelings about this place, first the bad. When I say bad, it's still bearable, I know it's not the Four Seasons, so I'm not going in with too high of expectations. We stayed in sunset village in a two bedroom "townhouse," (one queen bedroom and two twin beds in the other). The bedrooms were very dirty, the sheets felt stale and dusty, no bed skirts or something covering the box springs, tv wires hanging out of sockets. There were ants everywhere and stains all over the chairs inside and out and the place is very small. I can't even walk around the bedroom to find a spot for my suitcase. Lastly, the walls are super thin, I could hear the neighbors coughing. The good, there is a lot of good, please don't be mislead by my prior paragraph, I want to end on a high note. The kitchen is quite large it's perfect for a family that doesn't want to eat every meal out, I even recommend eating on the porch overlooking the water. You can't beat the views. The pools and the lagoon are AMAZING! The pools are the perfect temperature and the lagoon is just awesome, not to mention the great live mystic playing while you swim. I loved that you can choose to walk everywhere OR take the tram if you don't feel like it. That's all, hope you enjoy your vacation. read more

We recently came home from a few days in the keys including 3 nights at Hawks Cay. When my OB said no to a trip to an all inclusive in the Caribbean, I looked for a large resort in Florida and stumbled upon Hawks Cay at a great rate through book it. One thing that is not explicitly mentioned is a $39 a night resort fee which actually doesn't cover much as you must pay extra to rent kayaks, bikes, cabanas at the adult pool. There are dolphins on site and you are able to watch as they are trained but to get to interact with them, that's extra as well. Overall, with the resort fee added, it was about the cost of a 4 star hotel anyway. We stayed in a standard island view room which was actually a view of the entrance from the second floor. The resort is HUGE. In addition to the main building with three floors, there are MANY villas all around the resort. There's even a separate kids area with a pool and play areas. We stayed in the main area during our stay. Here's my review: The good: The pools are amazing. There is a main pool with a nearby (not swim up) bar. There is also a beautiful adult only (21+) pool. The salt water cabana is quite beautiful as well. After 11, staff come around and take drink and food orders so, you really dont need to leave your spot by the water. During our stay, the resort was only about 20-25 percent full so it was super easy to get chairs. The room we had (2217) was clean and well decorated. The furniture was a dark wood topped with granite. There was a huge walk in tile shower with glass doors. The lobby was gorgeous, especially decorated for Christmas. There is a large outdoor fire pit that is lit at night, accented by palm trees decorated with Christmas lights. I can not go on enough about how beautiful it is in the lobby and around the pools. The bad: The rooms were definitely starting to show some wear and tear. The sliding bathroom door, although pretty, was not functional. Every time we tried to close it the entire way, it got stuck and someone on the outside of the bathroom had to lift and pull the door to open it. We resorted to leaving the door 1/4 of the way open when using the bathroom. Also, although the tile shower is beautiful, the grout is really dirty in high traffic spots. The ugly: The food by the pools and room service were mediocre at best and seriously overpriced. $20 for an 8 slice cheese pizza plus 18% gratuity and a service fee when ordering room service. It's about $5 less when ordering at the pool. Burgers and sandwhiches are around $13-17 each. We ordered chips and salsa and the chips were stale. Our Margherita pizza was probably the worst Margherita pizza I have ever had. I can't comment on the onsite restaurant Alma as we left the resort at night to explore. I also highly suggest you leave at lunch and go to the Grassy Post Market and Grill. It's about a 5 minute drive and the food is incredible. The other big disappointment was the construction. We read reviews complaining about the noise so we called to ask about it before we booked in Oct. We were told that the construction would be complete by Dec. Not the case. The worst of it was near the adult pool which was called the "tranquilty" pool. Ha!! What a joke. It was so noisy with constant jack hammering ALL DAY LONG that I wore ear plugs while at the pool. This helped make it tolerable. We voiced our displeasure at checkout but the staff did not seem to care. I was rather upset about the noise since we specifically called to ask about construction before we booked. Overall, the resort is gorgeous. I would absolutely suggest it with when construction is complete or at least when it's not near the main buildings. Also, plan to leave the resort often for food. There are many good options in Marathon ( 15-20 minutes away) or take a trip to Key West for even more options ( an hour and 15 minute drive). read more

I've been coming here for the past 4 years and it used to be great, amazing accommodations but for the last year it's been awful, the last time we came we had horrible service and very rude staff. They don't care at all about the customers who are paying lots of money to be here. I decided to give it an other try this year. And it was even worse. The ladies that work at the coffee shop are soo rude and unprofessional, they try to actually fight me, I was soo confused. I've never seen such thing. After speaking to a manager I came to the conclusion that they just don't care about the customers because he did absolutely nothing about this awful situation and to top it off they now close the pool at sun down, when it use to be open 24 hrs. That was our favorite part of coming here, my kids loved being in the pool till late. But that's not an option anymore. I don't recommend this place at all !!!!! . Hawks Cay is the best resort or better said was the best resort in the keys we've been coming here for five years every year in a row let me tell you guys one of the best things this resort has was a 24 hour pool we just checked in for our yearly week vacation in the villas of hawks cay and we were told now when we came to the pool at 10:30 PM very rudely that the pool was closed and we were not allowed to use this pool I don't know we've had a couple issues this trip even the cashier at the starbucks was extremely rude even cursed at us Hawks cay please fix the situation and open your pool again 24 hours thank you!! Like I said I love this place we come every year sometimes even 2 to 3 times a year but unfortunately I will not be spending my money here anymore if this situation of the pool does not go back to how it was thank you hawks cay for great memories and we hope we can fix this issue read more

Not what I expected. It's a decent resort, it looks better in the photos online than when you get there. I'll give the good and the bad: Good: ~ rooms are a good size ~ kids had a great time at the pool area ~ Starbucks served onsite ~ beds are super comfortable ~ clean rooms with big closet ~ Bell people are super nice! Bad: ~ room was musty and carpet always felt wet. It grossed me out. ~ mini fridge is a joke. Didn't even get cold. ~ food at the onsite restaurants is way overpriced and not very good. The waiters are also extremely rude. ~ amenities all just seem old and not anything special. The resort just isn't very pretty. Was very surprised when I arrived...maybe did not have great expectations but the resort looked great. Overall this resort is good for kids and families. If you want to enjoy a pool and probably the best ocean experience available in the FL Keys then their lagoon is it. Water was turquoise blue the whole time and every picture looked like a postcard. There is plenty to do and the resort caters brilliantly for kids. There is a kids center where there are tons of activities and supervision. The island itself offers great family excursions like biking and kayaking, to mention just a few options. Of course the big draw is the Dolphin Connection - the sanctuary is quite beautiful and would be my preferred location if my name was Flipper. But get ready to put your hand to your pocket. The Dolphin Connection quickly turns into the Dolphin Carving - where 4 kids with photographs added up to $400 before I knew it. Surprisingly the on-site restaurants were decent....not great...but decent. Would visit this place again and would rate it above Tranquility Bay or even Cheeca Lodge as a family value location. What I mean is you get the best value for your money here vs tons of fun options compared to the latter two options. Don't be afraid and take the plunge. read more

My fiance found a great Jet Blue Getaways deal for this resort. We jumped at the chance to go and booked our trip. We arrived on a Thursday and checked out on Monday. In that time we enjoyed days lounging by the pool and lagoon, some great food and drink, and adventures away from the hotel- such a great location on The Keys! Our room was large, clean, and decorated nicely. The bathroom was really clean and seemed to have been renovated recently. I did enjoy that the bathroom was really large and the toilet was in a separate little room, which worked out well being 7 months pregnant so I could run in there without monopolizing the entire bathroom. The resort was beautiful and clean. We enjoyed the pool, lagoon, and fire pit at night. I only wish we would have noticed that there was a separate adults only pool around an outdoor bar not far from the main pool. Overall the pool was not too loud or crowded but there would be big groups/family that would come by every now and then and it would get a tad bit annoying. Esp, when they figured that entertaining their kids involved giving them the empty Bud Light metal bottles to play around with IN the pool. I wish the staff would have watched out for that but it didn't happen too often. Food poolside was great. We enjoyed the cheese burger, veggie wrap and fish tacos. Everything was really fresh and service was quick. For resort pricing I didn't think the food was too outrageous. I was disappointed that getting a virgin drink didn't mean I was actually saving much compared to the price of the boozy one tho. The lagoon is great to sit by to enjoy sunrise. It is kinda rocky around there so we generally stuck to hanging by the pool. Check out the dolphins! We didn't do any of the dolphin centered activities but we did enjoy them doing exercises and getting fed. We always received great service when it came to cleaning our room, towel service, and waiter service by pool. Disappointed is the word. From driving up to valet to check in to room service, I was let down by a place that would appear to be upscale and a stand out and otherwise should excel. When I drove up to valet in the pouring rain, valet made me park my car not under cover so I could get out but in the pouring rain. It did not help matters that the valet attendant did not offer to get my luggage and otherwise wanted to write up my ticket in the rain and not under cover. Check in was not the most pleasant. I and just about everyone else had to wait hours for rooms. The hotel kept telling guests they had a larger than normal turnover that day. That is not an excuse. If you are going to charge higher prices and try to be a luxury hotel or at least upscale hotel, than you need to staff appropriately so the issue is avoided. Room service was disappointing. The person taking the order did not ask if I wanted anything to drink. And my dish arrived without even a glass of water. Rather, it was a simple grey looking hamburger with a wilted piece of lettuce and no pickles as requested. While the room was overall pleasant and I appreciate that electrical outlets were easily accessible, the bathroom was an issue. There is no shower stall but rather an elevated tub. The tub has a very small curtain. It utterly failed to keep any water in the tub when in shower mode. The result was that I had about an inch of water covering the entire bathroom. This place has been and could be nice. The property is pretty, the facilities functional, and the location good. But this trip was an unfortunate disappointment that I may not come back with family next time. read more

I can't give them 5 stars because there were a few MINOR things that didn't make it absolutely flawless but, what I will say is this - **DO NOT miss out on the opportunity to say here!** My husband, daughter and I came to stay for 2 nights during their "Salute to Hero's" week, my husband is a US Marine and they honor all members of the Military each year in November and offer discounted rates to those who serve or have served, during the week. You can even submit a picture of your loved one in the military to be added to a slide show they do each Saturday, to honor those who have served. The service is impeccable, everyone is extremely friendly and helpful. We had a minor issues with the a/c and cable due to a momentary power outage (was literally a flash and out for one second) but after calling guest services, someone came immediately and all was fine after that. Our daughter LOVED the main pool and pirate ship splash pad which is a quick walk from the main building on property. They recently finished some major renovations so the grounds are beautiful but the room was amazing. Extremely spacious and comfortable. We had the family room with the bunk beds. Now, buyer beware because those rooms, do not have a view but if you don't mind then it's totally worth it. Our daughter loved the bunk beds. New flooring, not carpet. Sliding 'barn door' style door to the bathroom with a larger vanity, plenty of drawers for storage and hooks for wet towels/clothes. There wasn't a bathtub in our room but, the shower was big with beautiful travertine tile and crystal clear glass shower door. We also liked that the toilet was separated from the shower and sink/vanity area so if I was getting ready my husband or daughter could still use the bathroom at the same time. There was plenty of closet/drawer space as well and in this room 2 TV's, which came in handy when we were taking a break from festivities and my daughter wanted to watch a move while my husband watched the news. We ate breakfast and diner out so only had lunch on premises, at the tiki bar by the main pool but, the food we had was good and satisfying. The Nachos were really good and a great value; the cheeseburger was average but good and my daughter had the chicken fingers which were typical kid vacation food. Lastly, the use of kayaks and paddles boards in the lagoon were free which was another bonus! I'm sure there was more that we missed or didn't take advantage of and for that (among other things) we will FOR SURE be back!! Thank you Hawks Cay for a wonderful stay!! read more

Updating my review. We actually were going to check out early and go to a different hotel due to the construction. Constant jackhammering all day long until after 5pm was too much. I had a headache at the end of each day. My room service was horrible and it made me sick. We did not eat at the resort again. The grounds are very nice and the rooms are nice as well. The staff is also very friendly. The manager at the front when I checked out ended up giving me a credit for my stress. read more

We stayed at the resort for just two nights. The room was very comfortable and had all of the necessities. Every meal we had here was great with the exception the crab cake. We loved the cauliflower soup and the lobster croissant in particular. We came here to go snorkeling but unfortunately they canceled on us two days in a row citing weather. The weather was beautiful and we later learned that the snorkeling had been canceled due to a lack of people participating. I understand that it may not be economical to take out a small group, but at least give me the option of paying more, or better yet, follow though on your commitment anyway. Bottom line: We would be open to coming back here one day, and if we do, we will be requesting the cauliflower soup immediately. read more

Don't book on Expedia! We booked a 4 night stay at $650/night for what appeared to be a water front 2 story. When we arrived we we put in a land side single story handicapped unit that looked like a double wide trailer. The manager told me they are not responsible for how Expedia portrays the property and couldn't do a thing for us. The shower had visible mold, the floor was not level and water ran out of the handicapped shower through the entire bathroom. NOT worth $650/night! read more

We went for our 1 year anniversary and spent the weekend here. It is a little expensive (about $250/night), but seeing as it was our 1 year, I didn't really get upset about the cost... The food at The Terrace breakfast buffet was good, even if it was a little expensive. Almost $20 per person. They add 18% gratuity to everything you buy, so just be aware. It wasn't a big deal to us because we usually tip 20%. I do have to say that the staff really does a good job and deserves that 18%. We were never treated rudely and they were always making sure that we had everything we needed. They offer some fun things to do as well. We went snorkeling and had a great time (although I did get stung by a jelly fish). The only issue we had was that we actually had to ask to have our room cleaned because we went out and came back at around 5pm and our room had not been cleaned yet. There was a small stain on the duvet cover (we think it was old blood) and a lot of mildew on the shower curtain. Even after we told them about the stain and mildew, they didn't clean either, but at the end of our visit they took $100 off of our bill. I honestly don't think these 2 things were a deal breaker because they did refund us some of the bill. I do have to say I'm usually very picky about certain things, but we had a great time at this resort and we really liked that they tried to make things right. read more

Bring money. I think it is a bit too high as far as pricing goes, but you can always leave the resort and go exploring around the island for good eats. The service was very friendly.. you got greeted by every single person that went by..that's nice. And the resort is georgeous! I felt like a prince..It really doesn't get any better as far as ambiance..and our room was perfect. The showers and bathrooms are huge, and beautiful. The WiFi is pretty bad, but if that's what you want..don't go to the beach. haha. There is NO BEACH ACCESS. No sunsets..we had to drive up the highway to see a good sunset. Yet the online pics that they display shows a beach...which is actually an enclosed pool/ fake beach. That alone is why they get 2 stars. I feel bad for giving such a beautiful resort a low rating, but as far as going here for a honeymoon, it wasn't good. I did not complain, but it is a bummer, because they were building a tiki bar when we were there and the jackhammer running all day was not relaxing. Do not eat anything at this resort except breakfast, and just order room service for breakfast...it's $42 for 2 people... but it's the only food that was good. The grill is not good, and Tom's was below average..service was good, but the food was just not freshly prepared, and had no delicious to it. This place actually seems like a place for families to bring their kids, and have tons of fun..you can get in the water with dolphins ($200).. they have a Pirate Ship and a separate kids area, and I suppose if you brought your own food, or caught your own fish and cooked it would be super...but we were on our honeymoon, and it had some drawbacks... read more

We have to agree with many of the reviews posted here. There are good and bad things about this resort. Overall, we are willing to live with some of the bad things and return to enjoy all the good things here. If you're traveling with children, this place is ideal. They have something for kids of every age. For the mature set, however, it is a different story. The villas are reasonably maintained, but the hotel itself desperately needs a complete retrofit. The most noted criticisms are the condition of the carpets and walls, and interior fixtures that have been beat on for perhaps two generations. The other thing which really stands out for us is that the food is abysmal and expensive. This resort would be tremendously well served to fire their dining manager and hire someone else to improve the quality and lower the cost. Here is one example: Their omelette station is staffed with people who have no experience making omelettes. Their beach bar occupies a wonderful location that offers a very expensive menu of over-fried food. Fixing the food would enhance the experience tremendously at this resort, because you feel ripped off when they charge a family of four $200 for a mediocre fried food dinner. We plan on returning next year, but we will be better prepared to eat elsewhere if changes are not made in the kitchen at this resort. read more
