Over a bed of white rice and lightly boiled cabbage, each and every BBQ meat was delectable and homey. I asked for the scallion ginger sauce and the signature sauce to pour on top which I highly recommend. The soy sauce chicken was moist and had its signature sweet glazed, dark coating. The pork belly was just the right amount of fatty and toothsome with that great crispy skin. The char siu was pretty standard but that's not a bad thing. Overall, one of my favorite rice platters in Chinatown. Service: Fresh and fast! The meat is chopped right as you get to the shop. We were excited to check out Hay Hay Roasted, as one of our friends highly recommended this place for their roasted meats, especially for their duck. We had the Roasted Duck over rice, served with a side of steamed cabbage; the duck was just not fully rendered, so it was super fatty. The flavors were also not pronounced, so I could see why others had to ask for additional 'sauces' to dip the meat in. Also, it didn't seem if they cleaned the duck properly, because there were just random black streaks and marks on the skin and meat ( and, definitely not from any 'charring'). If service were better I would have wanted to return. The duck is decent and juicy, but comes at a cost of $13 for a quarter of the duck (to-go). It took the cashiers at least five minutes to acknowledge me, and this is after they tried to get the person after me to order. Decided to check out Hay Hay Roasted since I was looking for an alternative to Wah Fung and wanted to skip the ridiculous line. Just a heads up that they're cash only. I ordered the roasted pork over rice, but they told me they only had the lean cut left, which was a little disappointing. I went with it anyway. The flavor was decent, but the meat ended up being pretty dry. I wish they poured some of the juice from the meat over the rice like wah fung does, it would've helped bring everything together and helped with the dryness for sure. The space is pretty small and only seating available seemed like a few counter seats past the line of people waiting for their orders. It's cash only here, and prices are pretty good for the quality. I ordered 1lb charsiu, 1/2 soy sauce chicken, 1/2 pipa duck, and 1lb roast suckling pig. For the pig if you're early enough, you can choose bone in or boneless portion. The first time we got this, the charsiu was honestly kind of dry and not that great. The soy sauce chicken wasn't good at all and had a strong herbal, almost Chinese medicine taste to it. I figured I just didn't prefer it until my friend took some for his dad to try and his dad said it was off. Maybe someone went heavy handed with spices that day. Both the pig and the pipa duck were incredible, and both had crispy, delicious skin and tender meat. The pipa duck was half way to Peking, that's how crispy. Before flying home, we stopped by again for some charsiu and pig and the charsiu was much more tender and we loved it. In addition to the typical roasted and crispy pork and roasted duck, I also saw sausages, ribs, and other cuts of meat (probably ears and offal). Since this was my first time trying this establishment, I kept it simple and got the roasted honey pork and roasted duck over rice, as well as an order of char sui (honey roasted pork) over lo mein. The lo mein was out of this world. Typically lo mein that I've had does not include egg, but this version had it was the perfect addition! Don't buy into the hype. Been around Chinatown for decades and I never came here and was never told to but their recent social media push got me curious. So the only thing I can really say is, their social media and marketing efforts are top tier. The food and service, not so much. There's no ambience as it's basically just meant for takeout. There's a counter in the back that you can stand at to eat but please don't. Service is disappointingly slow. Unnecessary delays with the roast meats led to a 15 minute wait. They renovated, got some nice bags and got some influencers to post about them but there's not much here. My roast pig is about par for the course. Skin is crispy and even the leaner cut that they had left wasn't dry, but it did lack some flavor. I'll give them credit for cutting holes in the plastic box so the skin wouldn't steam and get soggy but it wasn't hot enough to need it. It also looked nothing like the curated social media post, ending up tossed around and unorganized. Cuttlefish was also about par, tender but seriously lacking in flavor. There are plenty of other places for better roast meats without the wait and the guilt of being borderline scammed by social media. Choose accordingly. read more
