Before I review the restaurant, here is some context for credibility's sake... I have been living in Manhattan and now Brooklyn since '94. I cooked at Union Sq Cafe and wrote, directed and produced instructional cooking shows at Food Network in the aughts. Back I n the 90s, I was a Music News producer at VH1 during the Behind the Music era. My fam has also had season tix to the Knicks since 1980. So --- lover of the city, music, food and MSG. With that in mind, I can say unequivocally that my fave pre-game/pre-show MSG establishment is the freakin' amazing Haymaker! You know when you hear someday say their dish is "made with love"? Well, that's the essence of Haymaker ... categorically (!) ... from the congenial bar and welcoming banquettes to the well-proportioned rear dining area. Even the bathrooms are spacious' and clean! And that magical beer list? Clearly curated by someone who absolutely loves the craft. Speaking of craft, the best beer list in the city alone would suffice on its own merit, but the Haymaker's cocktails are expertly made with precision and a dialed-in palate ... as is the focused menu which dabbles in a variety of both straightforward and global influences, each dish a people-pleaser. Yes, I am fawning because this place is the trifecta of value, location, and execution. On that last point, let me just say that the no-nonsense staff busts their collective butt. That team works with purpose, efficiency and a sense of urgency. I love this place so much and will never look elsewhere for pregame or other when I am in the vicinity. Not like Sour Patch kids, these wings WILL seesaw, but this magical Thai Sweet Chili Lime duo will take you on a magical journey. But wait, THE CRISP is witchcraft. Many places overfry it, and many places undercrisp (word?) it and it gets soggy. Note the pic - they didn't overglaze it and there's a very small pool beneath it. This is such a great spot in this cluster hole. Working close to MSG and Herald Square can be a nightmare 88% of the time, so you need to have go-tos for drinks, meals, quick bites, all the needs. Once I discovered Haymaker, it secured its place on my list. The food is your standard American grub. Burgers, fries, extensive beer list. This was probably the worst experience I've had with a place in the city. Friend made a reservation for 6 people at 6:30 and I was first to arrive (at 6:27). I went to check in and the hostess said "we gave your table away because nobody called and you were late." She proceeded to insist to me that our reservation was for 6 and not 6:30 so I brought up the confirmation email...she then just said "oh I'll see what I can do." The place was absolutely swamped and at this point the rest of our group arrived. She came back and told me that someone must've written it down wrong but they had no tables unless we wanted to sit outside (in 100 degree weather and humidity!!). The manager (or another employee) came over too and also said there were no tables and nothing they could do about it. They were very rude about it and never once apologized. We asked if we could put our name down for a table and if they would text us and they said sure and it would probably be 30 minutes. This review is for the quality of beer offered; and service. I did not order any food so I cannot comment on that. I am a beer snob and geek. Heady Topper is my favorite beer. Most other crap is toilet water and I won't touch it. But, there are a lot of other high quality beers out there. And this joint has a real, real nice beer menu. I had the gose beer that they had that night and it was exquisite. No complaints. And the bartender man kind of warned me, briefed me on the gose - because they are sour (which I already knew), but I appreciated the effort. And this information would be useful to someone who has not had a gose before. We stopped here for lunch on a Tuesday. They were not busy at all. The bartender was friendly and attentive. We ordered some beers we've never had that were on draft & really appreciated that they did smaller glass sizes for some of them. We love to try as many different beers as we can without getting too intoxicated, so small glasses are our favorites! We shared the sweet chili chicken wings that came with an aioli and the skillet mac n cheese. Both appetizers were delicious. The chicken was coated in a sweet chili sauce, and the aioli complimented it well. The mac and cheese was still bubbling when it was served to us, and had small pieces of green chili and garlic breadcrumbs on top. Very very good!! A much-needed addition to the nabe that is finally seeing a gradual facelift, Harmaker's food is great, and its beers are just phenomenal. I've been here twice now, once after a show at Magnet (grab that improv crowd!) and for an office holiday lunch that I steered here. Food: -The chicken wings are great, with that sweet chili and crispy garlic -Creole Gumbo**** : I got this the first time and it was awesome: love the andouille sausage & okra, which I'm not usually a big fan of -Slow-roasted pork ribs***: pecan bacon barbecue sauce & Bourbon sweet potatoes--this was also good, a bit more filling than what I was feeling that day. The beer list, as I mentioned, is extremely impressive. I saw picks from Other Half, Peekskill, Finback, Firestone, and breweries I'd never even heard of. Spreading the love both domestically and international. Very cool. I'm only taking a star off for weird service both times: the first time when there were at least a couple of wrong/late orders, and during the holiday lunch, the waiter seemed really miserable (maybe he was having a bad day, it being a Monday and all). Outstanding beer list, hands down. I just wish the food were up to this level. I just dined here with a friend and ordered the wings, the ribs and the burger (medium-rare). Both the ribs and the burger came barely warm, which is already disappointing. Maybe they were waiting for the wings, as we were brought all dishes (2 appetizers and 1 entree) at once (big mistake). The sauce of the ribs was beyond smoky, almost inedible, while the burger (incredibly thin) was too cooked and very boring (we even added cheddar cheese for $2). A $17 burger should taste better than this. The wings were the only "highlight" of the meal, although nothing memorable. Overall, a good place for a drink, but eat elsewhere. This was a good find! I was meeting some family over by Penn Station for brunch/lunch on New Years Day, and it's slim pickings in that area on a normal day, so New Year's Day seemed like it would be a challenge. The place we orginally thought about going to was closed, so I pulled out my phone to check my yelp app and see what else was around. I noticed haymaker and turned around to find it was just down the block from where we were and it looked like the lights were on! We walked down the block to find the place empty, but they were open. So we grabbed a seat in the back, and got drink and food menus. I started off with a mimosa, which was good, nothing special really. I wasn't hungover, but I was thinking that this was my last weekend to indulge before I hoped on the healthy for the new year bandwagon, so I ordered a burger. They have a decent sized menu with plenty of things that sounded good. The burger came with a special suace, caramelized onion jam and cheese - and it didn't disappoint! It also came with a side of fries. I definitely enjoyed it, and it seemed like everyone else I was with enjoyed their food as well. It's hard to find good food places in that area, so this is definitely one I'm going to keep in mind. The food was good. This place is newer and has a great location right near the Garden and Penn Station. We came here after hitting an early happy hour in the area and wow was it popping. The place fills up quick and most people, understandably so, gravitate towards the bar so we were lucky enough to get two seats. We came here once before at about 1 in the morning and this was a completely different and better experience. They have an extensive beer menu and will let you try anything before you commit. They have a couple beers on tap part of their part of their happy hour. After reading all the food reviews, we were committed to getting the wings. We had two orders of the wings and they lived up to their expectations. The wings are meaty and the sauce was great, especially with a nice cold beer. I ordered the Haymaker burger with bacon and blue cheese, and they absolutely nailed it. One of the best in the city, and I've had them all. No detail was spared - the roll, the meat, the seasoning - cooked to perfection, and I cannot wait to return. The asparagus appetizer was also first rate. Got here right at noon on a Friday with a friend. There was only one girl working the whole time I was there. But she was quick and attentive and nice! The beer select on tap is great. I prob would have tried so much more if time permitted.haha. I love my IPAs so it's a plus. They come in 8 oz servings so you can create your own flight of beers if you please :) Place is clean but small. I can see it getting packed. It has a good bar floor space so I'm sure there's a lot of standing and drinking if it's too packed. Food was good too. My friend got the sandwich which she enjoyed. I got the fries and wings (bourbon maple mustard - which the girl said is spicy but it wasn't at all. But still flavorful!). Both yummy! I'll def come back for the beers. Brought my friends here for brunch before leaving the city. On a Sunday afternoon we were seated quickly at a high top with adequate views of the rest of the restaurant. I ordered the beet salad while my friends ordered avocado toast and roasted brussel sprouts. The salad was plated beautifully though not fully wiped down on the sides, and came with ricotta instead of goat cheese, which ended up with my friend's brussel sprouts and vice versa. I came here on a Thursday evening with a dinner reservation. It has a very loud, sports bar type vibe but more upscale. The only thing I think is excellent about Haymaker is the tap list! The 2 people I came with and I had some really great beers: Grimm, Hill Farmstead, Interboro, etc. However, there are now plenty of places with great tap lists and I didn't love the vibe, the food was very average--edible but nothing I'd come back for. The service was fine but basically just took our orders no offers of suggestions or any commentary. Our server changed half way through but the original one never said she was leaving or introduced new server. The whole experience was just average other than the great beer selection. I wouldn't go out of my way to return and if I did I'd try to pick a quieter time and skip the food and just enjoy the delicious beers. read more

Came here one afternoon for my intern's goodbye lunch. Our coworker mentioned how great the mac and cheese is here so we headed down there to get some. We were immediately seated, luckily, we got there right before the lunch rush. We ordered a few drinks to start. I got the Haymaker's Cup (which is like a pimm's cup). I would highly recommend it. Our waitress was extremely nice. The kitchen was unfortunately backed up by 20 minutes and she ended up comping our drinks (which I didn't think was necessary, so I made sure to tip well). As for food, we all ordered the Haymaker burger with wings and mac & cheese as sides. I got my burger medium rare and they actually cooked it to medium rare! That doesn't happen often AT ALL. The burger was delicious, but the wings were the star of the show. The sauce was a little sweeter than I expected, but it's by no mean's bad. The mac & cheese was good, but it is very, very thick and rich. Be ready to hand the gruyere cheese. If you're lactose intolerant like me, it's best to take a few bites and leave the rest. What we were not prepared for was a wonderful atmosphere, killer drinks, spacious upscale bar and some o the finest beers that I found in NYC. The General Manager Tristan greeted us as we walked in and treated us like old friends or family. I work on the same block as Haymaker, so I am here often for work happy hours. I try to get there early, between 5pm - 5:30pm, in order to get a bar seat. It gets REALLY packed around 5:45pm - 6pm, so you might have to deal with some of the crowds. They start thinning out after 8pm. The emphasis is definitely on specialty beers here, but they offer a decent wine list too. My personal fave is the Malbec. The food menu is small, but most things are tasty, basically dressed up bar food. The wings are a little on the sweet side, but the burger and mac and cheese are delicious. Fries are a standout. In a neighborhood dominated by black hole Penn Station and generic Irish dives, Haymaker is a standout. read more

Definitely has more of the "kitchen" than the "bar" vibe going on. Came for a birthday gathering and a large standing group mingling over drinks seemed to be a little out of the norm. The lighting isn't particularly low, and the tables for food remain occupied by diners well into the night. But if you're coming for a seated happening with a set number of attendees, they definitely have the space for it as this place is surprisingly huge. The aesthetic inside is a little hard to pin down as it's very sleek, spacious, and modern. But I guess that's better than the "dingy dive" or "faux Irish pub" vibe you get at post places in the neighborhood catering to the denizens of MSG and Penn Station. This place seems to cater to the improv actor set from the Magnet Theater next door, so you might find yourself hit on by the performer type drinking away their post-class jitters. We did. Didn't try the food so can't speak to that- but the drink list was extensive and impressive, and had some cider offerings I hadn't previously heard of. A friend made a reservation for us here before an 8pm concert @ MSG. We planned to have drinks and appetizers and we were not disappointed. The drinks were spot on and the food was amazing. They had a really good selection of specialty cocktails but my simple whiskey sour was great. We had the brussel sprouts, mac & cheese, and the honey chipotle wings. The brussel sprouts were probably the best I've ever had. They were perfectly charred and served with sour cream which I would never think to do, but it was delicious. This bar is cute for a after work vibe/crowd. The Not So Good: As others stated the place is LOUD, especially at the bar. Seems like there is no insulation in the space. My friend and I sat at the bar while we waited for a table. It was hard to hear my friend who was sitting six inches away from me! We had mix drinks at the bar which was weak, I mean really weak. I don't like strong punch me in the face drink at all, but this (Don Julio and pineapple) was virtually juice! The main plate- double burger and side "salad", I say salad loosely as it was only a handful of dressed arugula and spring mix. The burger was overcooked (I ordered it medium) but not dry so I kept eating it. My friend had the mac and cheese, which look pretty good, she said that it was as well. Second round of drinks at the table again was weak. The Take-away: Note to self and others don't buy the overpriced weak cocktails. So mixed review. We ate here on Jan 31st. The food was excellent! We shared the chili lime wings, Brussels sprouts, and a hanger steak. All delicious. Seriously- get the sprouts. Cocktails were also tasty but at $13 each it would be nice if it hadn't been the size of a thimble. Our server also was not stellar, but in her defense she seemed to have the whole floor by herself. Came here for brunch after our reservation elsewhere fell through! It was easy to get a table for 5 of us right away as it wasn't very crowded and didn't have much of a brunch vibe - it seems like more a dinner place. The food was actually very tasty. I like to get both sweet and savory in my brunch so I got both the four cheese Mac n cheese with garlic bread crumbs as well as the peach French toast to share with a friend, both of which were excellent. I also got fries on the side, which were okay. My friend got the brunch bowl, which she said was alright. They had good portion sizes! I got a mimosa as I like to get mimosas at brunch, although it would have been nice if there were a bottomless deal!
