Not Worth the Hype or the $250 Price Tag I had high expectations for Haywire, especially given the $250 Cowboy Feast, but unfortunately, the execution was a huge letdown. To be clear, service wasn't the issue, our waitress did a solid job under the circumstances. However, the bar was painfully slow, taking 10-15 minutes just for a single pour of bourbon, long after the cocktails had arrived. The real problem? The steaks. We ordered the feast medium rare, yet what came out was completely inconsistent: - The wagyu tomahawk was rare, barely cooked past a sear. - The strip was medium well at best, a total overcook. - The filet was also rare, nowhere near medium rare. For a steakhouse that prides itself on premium cuts and top-tier service, I expected much better attention to detail. The steaks were sliced before being served, so the kitchen should have clearly seen that they weren't cooked properly, but they sent them out anyway. To make matters worse, when we brought this up to the manager, they simply threw the already-sliced steak back on the grill for a quick fix. At this price point, nearly $600 for the meal, I expected more than just tossing a ruined steak back on the heat. A premium experience should come with premium service and accountability, not just a halfhearted attempt to patch up the mistake. By that point, some of our party had already started eating because we didn't want to wait even longer for the food to be fixed. That shouldn't have happened in the first place. On top of that, the sides were served without any serving utensils, meaning everyone had to use their personal forks... a minor issue, but not something I'd expect at this price point. And please, try to tell me again how the steak is "medium rare" and not straight-up rare/blue. At this price, we shouldn't have to choose between undercooked and overcooked steak. If you're going to charge top dollar for a premium experience, the kitchen needs to be on point. Unfortunately, it wasn't. At least the vibes were vibing. read more

The onion rings are HUGE and so crispy. The queso is delicious, though a little clumpy. Chips were great and the sauces were delicious. The fried green tomatoes were my least favorite part, as they didn't seem ripe, but overall a great starter. - Red fish (4/5): Tasty and generous portion. Needed a little salt but otherwise good. Loved the mashed potatoes and citrus salad that comes with it! I added the corn bread for $3 and it was worth it. - Pork chop (4/5): Giant pork chop similar to Perry's famous pork chop. Juicy and cooked perfectly, but needed more flavor or a sweetness to it. The chipotle butter it comes with is okay. OK, full disclosure I went to Haywire 8 days after their grand opening and just now getting around to posting my review. I am shocked that the reviews have not been more positive. It has no bearing on my opinion though. Here's my experience. Haywire at La Cantera might be my new favorite spot in San Antonio. The place has a true Texas vibe - like an upscale ranch house - and the service was awesome. We kicked things off with the Chef's Favorite 4 (queso blanco, branding iron onion rings, mini elk tacos and fried green tomatoes). Every single one was tasty and honestly could've been a whole meal by itself. For mains, we had the Slow and Low Chicken, which was super juicy and flavorful, and the Double Cut Pork Chop, which stole the show. Perfectly cooked, so tender and packed with flavor - it practically melted in my mouth. And I can't forget the Bourbon Smash I ordered... top-notch cocktail and the perfect match for such a great meal. I highly recommend Haywire and will definitely go back. read more

Our family chose Haywire for our annual holiday dinner and am I sure glad we did! Literally from the moment we walked in we were greeted by friendly warm smiles. Okay but next a moment for the decor and ambiance! Definitely giving Yellowstone Chic vibes! Our waiter Josiah was STELLAR! He was knowledgeable about items on both the menu and wine list, not just that he checked on us frequently but not too much as to interrupt. Now the food..honestly I'd give it a solid 7.5 out of 10. We ordered an appetizer (super filling perfect for sharing), prime rib, chicken fried chicken, the burger and another steak. We had been excited to try this Haywire since we loved the one we visited in Frisco, Texas. One positive, it's beautiful inside! Unfortunately for us, our experience ended before we ever got to order anything. When we got there around 3pm, there was no one at the hostess stand. She arrived after about a 5 minute wait and then she wasn't very friendly. Not a great first impression, but wasn't a huge deal breaker. She said we may have to wait 10 minutes because there was only one server for the whole area and he was super busy and someone had to clear a table for us. At that point a man walked up, took the menus from her and said "come with me" and seated us. No idea who he was. It was a huge section (table area, not booth area). When we were seated, we noticed there were only TWO other tables with customers. The other 90% of the area was empty so we wondered why he was overwhelmed?! After about 5 minutes, a server finally came by and told us that our original waiter was getting ready to leave so he was going to be our server now. Sounded fine. Over 10 minutes went by and our server never came back to take our drink or food order. We could see him walking around and we tried to get his attention, but no luck. I went to the hostess desk to see if she could help, but she wasn't anywhere to be found again. At this point, since we hadn't even ordered, we just packed up and left...extremely disappointed! I would have thought that on a holiday weekend , they would be fully staffed and ready for customers?! We weren't dressed up as most guest were and got seated in a back room away from Everyone with maybe 3 other tables in there. Maybe that's where non dressed or non reservations get sent ... At first I wasn't upset but I heard a hostess bring guest back there and they straight out said we don't wanna sit back here and she took them to table up front and told them I just wanted to show you the entire restaurant. Has something for everyone, including an impressive wine/spirits menu. Our server was over the top informative and so sweet. Not sure if this was the norm but they brought our table the Chef's Favorite Appetizer dish. It had there amazing fried onion rings, fried green tomatoes, blanco queso with chips and elk mini tacos. My mother and I had such a great dining experience! We sat at the bar for a late lunch and our bartender, Jarrett, was just fantastic. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and best of all - fun! The food was top notch. The ambience was peaceful and fun. We started with the elk tacos. The meat was moist and full of flavor without being gammy. The pablano sauce was a great addition. Mom had the meat loaf. This woman loves meat loaf, and she said "Is this not the best meatloaf you've ever had?" I had the hot Texas chicken sandwich. It had this yogurt sauce that was amazing. The chicken was moist, and the flavors were perfect. Jarrett is what really made our experience special though. Thank you! We popped over to Haywire early on Saturday (last night) since we didn't have a reservation. Overall we had a positive experience (food,vibe, friendlessness). The restaurant has just opened and definitely has some "opportunities for improvement" with service. Arriving at 5:30 pm, we were greeted by high energy hostesses with cowboy hats and big smiles. The restaurant is a cozy, western vibe and we were digging it. We originally grabbed a spot on the back side of the bar. It wasn't busy and there were lots of staff behind the bar. (bar backs and bartenders) No one turned around to wait on us. (Eek) Not being salty, we moved to the front side of the bar and suddenly became visible. Drinks and appis ordered, we people watched. Twenty minutes later, a manager approached us to apologize for the delay in getting our queso out. No worries until our drinks were gone and we waited... again. Then a new bartender came on shift. She knew how to watch the bar. Main course ordered... drinks ordered... all started flowing again. The cowboy steak and tallow fries were amazing. Definitely a 10/10. It took a hot minute to get our check but what I will say to you (if you've made it this far). Be patient. It's a new place. The food is amazing. The staff are learning. Haywire mixes the ketchup in house, & it was a little too spicy for me and I had to ask for regular ketchup. For entrées we had the pork chop. Our server did not ask @ what temp we wanted it cooked & it came out a bit over cooked and OVER seasoned. The seasoning was too strong for my liking. We also ordered the Ribeye (which I believe is one of two steaks on the menu with a bone). I could not tell you how it was cooked because the seasoning was so over bearing that I could not eat it. The flavor the my steak was actually gross. Our waitress said our steaks were sourced from Ohio. Which I was a little sad to hear, as I was hoping they were sourced locally. The ribeye did not taste like a fresh cut steak. Haywire does not offer baked potatoes, they offer mashed potatoes. We both agreed the mashed potatoes were good. We also had a cornbread, that was ok. We usually give restaurants that we are not satisfied with 3 tries. My husband and I both agreed that we would not be going back. We eat out regularly and are not scared with today's prices, but for the price we both believed the food was not worth it. We have eaten at quite a few of steak restaurants both locally and while on vacation and we both agreed several midlevel steakhouses offer a better steak than Haywire. If you are looking for a cute photo-op and do not care about the level of food quality then, this might be for you. Tonight I went out with my daughter and her friend for her birthday. We were having a good time until it was time for our food. The food took a long time to come out so we requested to speak to a manager. We spoke to a Hispanic manager, I can't really remember her name but it started with a J. Joanna or Joe She was extremely rude and pretty much blew us off like she didn't care. We asked to speak to another manager and no one stopped by. For our first visit, we had an amazing experience. I chose the baby back BBQ ribs with tallow fries, my wife chose the low and slow chicken with cilantro cauliflower tortillas. The attention to detail was incredible,from the monogrammed clear ice cube in my haywire old fashioned to the different designed seats at different tables, to the bar staff polishing every glass before it goes out. Our waitress Katalina L was very articulate, attentive, and detailed. She truly "spoke to the menu" when it came down to describing any particular meal which only made us desire it more. My wife and I have been here five times since they opened this location. Every time we visit, I'm impressed with the quality of the food and service. We brought family members and friends from out of town on different occasions and all have been pleased with the experience. A favorite of ours is the ribs, which have fallen off the bone every time. Today I decided to get the western burger and have to say, it was one of the top burgers I've had in my life. The patty was a perfectly cooked medium, it filled the bun, and it was juicy. The combination of BBQ sauce, pickles, and fried onions knocked it out of the park. It was a little messy, but not so messy that it was a nuisance--the way a good burger should be! This is a fairly new place in San Antonio so naturally a little 45 min wait on the day we went, unless you're okay with the patio. We opted for the patio which the day we chose to go was nice enough to sit outside on the patio. While it was a little warm it wasn't unbearable, I do think they could have turned on the fans it would have made it a little cooler and more relaxing. The one down side to the patio is the sun can be brutal facing it, truly think they should invest in some kind of shades or shade plant. The inside is western, very well designed for the theme. The service was overall decent, a little slow, a few hiccups, I would expect some, the runners kept bringing everyone else's order to our table. We did ask for suggestions for the food, personally was not a fan of the crab dip, very salty and some mushy pita bread which was too much mush for me but they were nice enough to take it back and replace with the fried green tomatoes which were better. I ordered chicken fried steak, potatoes and broccolini, the gravy was very salty and slathered on top of the meat, and no seasoning on the broccolini but the upside was the items were cooked well, meaning not burnt or over done. My husband ask about the Prime rib or pork chops, the waiter suggested pork chops, overall not my husband's favorite and he loves a good pork chop. He felt it was dry. I'm Not sure what happened as they stated the way they cook it, it should be moist. FYI he kept it.:-) meats too costly. The children's chicken strips were cooked to a golden perfection, no gravy, then we opted for green beans for her because she normally loves them but they came out steamed crunchy with no seasoning so she did not like them because they were not normal kid friendly. Overall not my favorite place to dine but they are still new and have some kinks to work out. I think they can hold back seasoning on some, and season others. First time visiting...What a great experience! It was about 5p and they had a nice crowd. There was no one sitting on the patio, which is where we wanted to be. The hostess made sure there was a server that would commit to serving us and not forget about us. George was our server and he did a phenomenal job checking on us and keeping our beverages filled. The ambiance is great...kind of glam meets cowboy...very fun. We started with the shrimp and fish ceviche, which we both agreed was the best we've had. It was made with their Haywire spin, which included cucumbers and peppers. We also got the low & slow chicken, with chimichurri rice, sauteed veggies & cilantro lime tortillas. So yummy! The only con at all was that the low & slow chicken was overcooked and dry. But with all of the great flavors of the rice, veggies and cilantro crema, combined with the chicken, the dish was still delicious. We will go back! I've been to Haywire multiple times and have always enjoyed the food and atmosphere--it's been one of my go-to spots. However, my most recent visit was unfortunately disappointing and not up to the standards I've come to expect here. To start, my order came out a bit wrong. Our waitress kindly offered to take it back and have it fixed, which I appreciated. But in explaining the mix-up, she mentioned that communication with the kitchen can be difficult because the staff only speaks Spanish which made me question some things. Later in the meal, when I asked for my leftovers to be boxed. I was just handed a container to do it myself. For a place that's positioned as a higher-end restaurant, that felt surprisingly unpolished. But the worst part of the experience was the dessert. We ordered the bread pudding, which we usually love, but when we cut into it, we found three strands of hair baked inside. We immediately told our waitress, who didn't apologize--she just took it away silently and brought us a new one, which was noticeably smaller. There was no apology from her, and no manager ever came by to acknowledge the issue or offer an explanation. While the dessert was removed from our bill, the complete lack of communication or concern from management was very disappointing and honestly, unprofessional. I hope this was just a one-off bad night, but it definitely left me second-guessing my next visit. read more

We went for my boyfriend's birthday dinner....ambiance was VERY nice...great atmosphere. Max our server was very attentive and knowledgeable. We started with a spinach and crab dip, which was excellent. As for food, my ribeye was undercooked...I notified the server and he sent it back to be put back on the grill...when it came back out, I thought it was better but it was almost exactly the same, I did not say anything anymore because the other two people at my table were already eating...I also think my steak could have used more salt(but I know taste is subjective). My boyfriend had the porterhouse steak and he loved it, the chimichurri was very good. His sides were the broccolini, which was excellent and the crab Mac n cheese. One HUGE downside was the gnats. I could see one or two but there were way too many in and around all our dishes. I understand the door is constantly being open and closed but still way too many. Max did offer my boyfriend a dessert on the house for his birthday which was very nice. We took a carrot cake to go.
