First time visiting this place as it has been recommended by others. We arrived around 9 and asked the hostess what the wait was for a party of 3. We saw around 8 people in the waiting area and the restaurant doesn't close until 11pm on Saturdays. The hostess informed us that they were only taking reservations for the rest of the evening. That was surprising to hear as they were maybe about 60-70% full inside. Luckily we found available seats at the bar. There were several tables emptied behind us and those were never filled the 1.5 hour we were there. Service: bartenders were nice and stayed busy. Unfortunately when we sat down we didn't have utensils or plates. We ordered appetizers and drinks and the plates/utensils were not brought to us. We asked about 10 minutes after the apps were dropped off and they didn't have enough clean plates for us. Then it was another 10 minutes until the last person in our group got a plate. Super disappointing. Drinks: They were all fantastic and made well. Prices are the norm for the area ($12-$15 per drink.) Food: Also delicious . Oh man, they really got the name right. This is the weirdest, most confounding restaurant I have ever experienced. Surreal, but not in a good way. Arrived Monday, May 11 for our 6 pm reservation for 9. There were plenty of tables. Upon check in, hostess said they were just going to check that our table was ready. That's when things went off the rails. It was obvious they had screwed up the reservation-managers heading to the front and you could see the hostess was flustered. Then they started setting up our table - a table right by the door. Not cool for a reservation but no biggie. For some reason it took 15 minutes to bring out the extra place settings. Then while we are standing there watching, they started pouring water. Really? Just seat us already. Now for the table. Long, u shaped booth, impossible for conversation. Picture the last supper. My dad and I on the ends couldn't really converse with anyone. Just a dumb set up for any party larger than 4. We did try for another table, but of course not available even though we made a reservation 2 weeks ago. Pretty sure they don't understand what a reservation is. Then we got the spiel and I asked for a wine list. That took about 10 minutes. I ordered a bottle of white and 2 bottles of red. 20 minutes later, she returns and tells us they don't have the white. I order a different bottle. 20 minutes later, they come back and say they don't have the red and offer a bottle that's $15 more expensive. In between, they tried to upsell our water to "coca cola products." Anyway, I let the waitress know this upselling wasn't acceptable and to bring back the wine list. Another 20 minutes goes by and now a manager comes and apologizes and says the refrigerator was broken and she wanted to chill the wine first. At this point I asked, "what about the red?" She said, "what red", and gave some excuse We are now more than an hour in and not a drop of wine has been poured. The apps game. They were ok. Fried green tomatoes were too green and were not cooked properly (raw), but Ok. I think we also managed to get our orders. Finally the white wine came, then maybe 10 minutes later the manager showed up with 1 bottle of our second choice red (we ordered 2). The waitress, bless her heart, could not open the wine. She said she was trying to remove it so it didn't pop (it was Pinot Grigio) and actually accidentally smashed the bottle on the table. She ended up breaking the cork and pouring too many glasses of white. No biggie . The "manager " handled the red. She also could not open a bottle of wine and broke the cork. Meanwhile, the poor waitress who had obviously been thrown into the fire with no training and no support, offered to get an ice bucket for the white. Came back, forgot it, came back again 15 minutes later, poured water from the water bottle on the table into the icebucket and proceeded to put the red bottle "on ice." So at this point, we are just going with it. Pushing 2 hours in, we had finished apps and finally had wine. Then the food came. We were missing some items. I had the 13 oz ribeye. I ordered it medium. It was well done, not medium, and very salty. Smallest spinalis I've ever seen on ribeye-maybe it was a select cut? Green beans were raw and flavorless. Loaded mash potatoes had good flavor, but were lukewarm. And no steak knives? Why?? I didn't have the heart or another hour to spare , so I didn't send it back. When they realized it was my birthday, they offered free dessert, which I declined because I knew it would be another 30 minutes. We never got the second bottle of red or anything other than excuses from the manager- who we did not call, she came of her own accord. I feel our waitress was just hung out to dry by a terrible system. Bill was presented and they clicked past the receipt and straight to the payment screen and the waitress pretty much ran way after that. Given the chaos and missed items, including the wine, as well as no communication around gratuity being added or not, we had to go to the hostess to check the bill. Cherry on top? She said we had to run the card to see it. What the actual hell? Frankly, reading other reviews about how they run out of wine and food, and always suggest a higher dollar item to replace, I suspect this by design. It certainly felt like a bait and switch to me. We had dinner here tonight at 5pm for a party of 5. We were sat quickly and were fortunate enough to have Steve as our waiter. He was fantastic!! Steve was friendly and attentive and if you are lucky enough to get seated in his section, congratulations! You won the lotto! As for the food, we had a mix of burgers, seafood, salad, and steaks. Venison chili. It is so good. Personally, I find the pedestrian chopped onion garnish only detracts from the perfection of slow good venison and spices, paired with fresh buttery cornbread. One serving wasn't enough, I had to return for more the next day. The Cobb salad was also fantastic, which isn't a word often (ever?) used for a salad. Then again, I haven't had someone ask me about a salad that wasn't big enough to feed a family - this one got attention. Not Worth the Hype or the $250 Price Tag I had high expectations for Haywire, especially given the $250 Cowboy Feast, but unfortunately, the execution was a huge letdown. To be clear, service wasn't the issue, our waitress did a solid job under the circumstances. However, the bar was painfully slow, taking 10-15 minutes just for a single pour of bourbon, long after the cocktails had arrived. The real problem? The steaks. We ordered the feast medium rare, yet what came out was completely inconsistent: - The wagyu tomahawk was rare, barely cooked past a sear. - The strip was medium well at best, a total overcook. - The filet was also rare, nowhere near medium rare. For a steakhouse that prides itself on premium cuts and top-tier service, I expected much better attention to detail. The steaks were sliced before being served, so the kitchen should have clearly seen that they weren't cooked properly, but they sent them out anyway. To make matters worse, when we brought this up to the manager, they simply threw the already-sliced steak back on the grill for a quick fix. At this price point, nearly $600 for the meal, I expected more than just tossing a ruined steak back on the heat. A premium experience should come with premium service and accountability, not just a halfhearted attempt to patch up the mistake. By that point, some of our party had already started eating because we didn't want to wait even longer for the food to be fixed. That shouldn't have happened in the first place. On top of that, the sides were served without any serving utensils, meaning everyone had to use their personal forks... a minor issue, but not something I'd expect at this price point. And please, try to tell me again how the steak is "medium rare" and not straight-up rare/blue. At this price, we shouldn't have to choose between undercooked and overcooked steak. If you're going to charge top dollar for a premium experience, the kitchen needs to be on point. Unfortunately, it wasn't. At least the vibes were vibing. read more

Recommended since it's new and if you have larger parties, but not required. There may be a wait without one. FOOD RATINGS: - Appetizer sampler (5/5): A great starter for the table! The fried green tomatoes were my least favorite part, as they didn't seem ripe, but overall a great starter. - Red fish (4/5): Tasty and generous portion. Needed a little salt but otherwise good. Loved the mashed potatoes and citrus salad that comes with it! I added the corn bread for $3 and it was worth it. - Pork chop (4/5): Giant pork chop similar to Perry's famous pork chop. Juicy and cooked perfectly, but needed more flavor or a sweetness to it. The chipotle butter it comes with is okay. You get 1 side with it but can order more. - Mac and cheese (4/5): Pretty tasty overall. Small portion for the price but enjoyable and would order again. - Pecan pie (3.5/5): The only reason this didn't get rated higher is because it was served cold/slightly frozen! The flavor was rich and incredible, but it needed to be nuked. We had to saw bites off and stab it with our spoons, and the ice cream wouldn't melt at all since the entire slide was frozen. OK, full disclosure I went to Haywire 8 days after their grand opening and just now getting around to posting my review. I am shocked that the reviews have not been more positive. It has no bearing on my opinion though. Here's my experience. Haywire at La Cantera might be my new favorite spot in San Antonio. The place has a true Texas vibe - like an upscale ranch house - and the service was awesome. We kicked things off with the Chef's Favorite 4 (queso blanco, branding iron onion rings, mini elk tacos and fried green tomatoes). Every single one was tasty and honestly could've been a whole meal by itself. For mains, we had the Slow and Low Chicken, which was super juicy and flavorful, and the Double Cut Pork Chop, which stole the show. Perfectly cooked, so tender and packed with flavor - it practically melted in my mouth. And I can't forget the Bourbon Smash I ordered... top-notch cocktail and the perfect match for such a great meal. I highly recommend Haywire and will definitely go back. read more

I'd like to begin with the positives. The food was excellent--truly the highlight of the evening. Many of our guests ordered the filet, and it was consistently prepared well, flavorful, and cooked exactly as requested. My husband also enjoyed the ribs. Overall, the kitchen did a wonderful job, and we were very pleased with the quality of the meal. Unfortunately, the service and event coordination did not match the quality of the food. I arrived at 4:00 PM to review the room and finalize a few details, but the space was not ready, and I had to wait. We were not able to enter the Vaquero Room until after 4:30 PM, at which point all of my guests had already arrived and were left waiting outside, as we were in the way of regular dining traffic. Once inside, the room was uncomfortably warm, and there was no wait staff prepared for our group. Our primary server, John, was clearly doing his best, but he appeared to be assigned to our event at the last minute and was being trained during the event itself. As a result, our guests were not offered water or beverages for approximately 20 minutes after being seated. I want to emphasize that John was friendly, professional, and did an excellent job under difficult circumstances. However, he did not have the support needed for an event of this size. There were additional issues that added to the frustration: - One guest's meal was significantly delayed, requiring us to involve a manager. - There was confusion regarding billing, and guests were incorrectly charged for tea and soda, despite these being included in our agreement. - As of today, my mother-in-law has two charges on her credit card when there should only be one. Throughout the event, I found myself monitoring service--checking whether guests had received drinks or food--which took away from my ability to enjoy what was meant to be a special 40th anniversary celebration. While I understand restaurants can be busy, I do believe that private events should be properly staffed and prepared in advance. Unfortunately, the overall experience felt disorganized and unprepared, which overshadowed what should have been a memorable evening. We chose your restaurant because of a prior positive experience, and we were excited to share that with our friends and family. While the food met expectations, the service did not. For these reasons, I'm unable to recommend hosting an event at your venue at this time. read more

He was knowledgeable about items on both the menu and wine list, not just that he checked on us frequently but not too much as to interrupt. Now the food..honestly I'd give it a solid 7.5 out of 10. We made a reservation a week in advance for a cowgirl dinner experience. It was a party of 15 I know it was a big party but again reservation was made a week in advance for a friend's birthday. Food took over an hour to arrive and 2 people didn't get their food. Also 5 people didn't get their sides. Steaks were all cold AND you had to fight the pork ribs to cut them. Manager was called and never came to the table. Only one manager was working and never showed up even after the restaurant closed (we had barely gotten our food) it was a terrible experience and it's extremely unfortunate that a manager never checked in on us. We had been excited to try this Haywire since we loved the one we visited in Frisco, Texas. One positive, it's beautiful inside! Unfortunately for us, our experience ended before we ever got to order anything. When we got there around 3pm, there was no one at the hostess stand. She arrived after about a 5 minute wait and then she wasn't very friendly. Not a great first impression, but wasn't a huge deal breaker. She said we may have to wait 10 minutes because there was only one server for the whole area and he was super busy and someone had to clear a table for us. At that point a man walked up, took the menus from her and said "come with me" and seated us. No idea who he was. It was a huge section (table area, not booth area). When we were seated, we noticed there were only TWO other tables with customers. The other 90% of the area was empty so we wondered why he was overwhelmed?! After about 5 minutes, a server finally came by and told us that our original waiter was getting ready to leave so he was going to be our server now. Sounded fine. Over 10 minutes went by and our server never came back to take our drink or food order. We could see him walking around and we tried to get his attention, but no luck. I went to the hostess desk to see if she could help, but she wasn't anywhere to be found again. At this point, since we hadn't even ordered, we just packed up and left...extremely disappointed! I would have thought that on a holiday weekend , they would be fully staffed and ready for customers?! Check out my receipt and you will see a total scam. I went in there with my husband just recently and we ordered some dinner and we each got a cocktail. I got a signature cocktail that was $13 and my husband decided just to order a dirty martini we got our bill. We were absolutely stunned that they charge $21 for a martini and then they charged us three dollars to put olive juice in it and then they actually charged us two dollars to put olives in it. Making the total for his drink $26. Who charges extra to put an olive juice in a martini? They're just trying to scam their customers and I'm incredibly disappointed. I went up to the manager after we had paid our bill and explained that this was absolutely ridiculous that we needed some of the finest restaurants in San Antonio and we've never been charged this much for a simple martini and he said that he would also be angry at the Bill and that he was gonna do something about it. The food was top notch. The ambience was peaceful and fun. We started with the elk tacos. The meat was moist and full of flavor without being gammy. The pablano sauce was a great addition. My husband and I, along with another couple, dined here this past Friday. The food was excellent and the service was great--we had the redfish, and our friends ordered the burger and chicken. We truly had no complaints about the meal or the service up until it was time to pay. We each paid our bills and stayed a bit longer to finish our cocktails. Shortly after, our waitress returned and let us know that the payments hadn't been captured yet we each signed our bills and she would need to re-run our cards. She assured us we would not be double charged, so we provided our payment again. Unfortunately, a few days later, we checked our credit card statements and found that we had, in fact, been charged twice. We understand that mistakes can happen. However, what was most disappointing was how the situation was handled afterward. When my husband called to speak with a manager, he was met with a rude response and questioned about why he needed to speak to one. When he did speak with someone, there was no apology for the error just a casual request for his information, as if the situation were insignificant. As of now, the duplicate charge still hasn't been corrected. Each of our bills exceeded $150, so this is not a minor issue. While some may not mind waiting days for a refund, we do. We expected a higher level of professionalism and urgency in resolving a billing mistake like this. I also want to add that the hostess, who was wearing a green top, was quite rude when I asked about the wait time. She told us it would be 2 hours and 45 minutes. We popped over to Haywire early on Saturday (last night) since we didn't have a reservation. Overall we had a positive experience (food,vibe, friendlessness). The restaurant has just opened and definitely has some "opportunities for improvement" with service. Arriving at 5:30 pm, we were greeted by high energy hostesses with cowboy hats and big smiles. The restaurant is a cozy, western vibe and we were digging it. We originally grabbed a spot on the back side of the bar. It wasn't busy and there were lots of staff behind the bar. (bar backs and bartenders) No one turned around to wait on us. (Eek) Not being salty, we moved to the front side of the bar and suddenly became visible. Drinks and appis ordered, we people watched. Twenty minutes later, a manager approached us to apologize for the delay in getting our queso out. No worries until our drinks were gone and we waited... again. Then a new bartender came on shift. She knew how to watch the bar. Main course ordered... drinks ordered... all started flowing again. The cowboy steak and tallow fries were amazing. Definitely a 10/10. It took a hot minute to get our check but what I will say to you (if you've made it this far). Be patient. It's a new place. The food is amazing. The staff are learning.
