I'd give them 5 stars except this visit on St. Patrick's Day wasn't as good as my first time here. The menu was very pared down featuring only a few items. That wasn't as bad as the fact that Irish soda bread was listed as an appetizer! I've never heard of this since another well known Irish gastropub in Suffern always serves soda bread with all meals at no extra charge. It's not a major issue but one that surprised me. read more

Love coming here for their delicious cocktails. There are several bar areas at H&T but I especially like the (well ventilated) cigar bar area with club chairs and tv's. There's always great music playing and a jukebox if you're interested in playing your own jams. Love the fun and upscale pub atmosphere. The interior of the restaurant is gorgeous with beautiful woods, stone hearths and outdoor patio making for a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Food is quite good for a gastropub with Italian, contemporary American & traditional Irish dishes. Great for accommodating larger parties as well. read more

Let me first say that I will always consider this the Porterhouse in my heart. I've come here a few times over the years and have never been left disappointed, by the staff and food that is. I can't say the same for some of that dates I took. More recently, I come here for the occasional bar experience and the cigars. Trivia on Tuesday nights is first-rate. The wait and bar staff are no doubt professionals, mindful of an empty plate or glass. With all that said, I can't fully stand behind the menu. Make no mistake, the food is exceptional, but when this establishment changed to "Hearth and Tap" they instituted a new menu that I can only describe as aspirational. They use fancy words to make you feel you're ordering a gourmet meal prepared by Gordan Ramsey, and the prices rose. However, I preferred a simpler menu that one would expect when sitting down for a pint. As I said, I really only come hear now for the bar experience so I can't comment on the full menu. Overall, this is a great place and I expect to continue to come for as long as the staff stays as professional as they are currently. read more

I work in customer service and I know how a big party should be treated. I had called earlier that day to make a reservation so we were set for ten people, even though we had a party of 9. Great, I asked them if I could bring a cake with us and the girl on the phone said "oh it's a birthday"? And I responded with yes it is, no one had mentioned any cutting fee to me over the phone. Later that night when the rest of my party arrived with The cake our waitress said there's a "cutting fee" to which we were all a little confused by. First the waitress said the cutting fee would be 2.50/per person, then it doubled that to 5 dollars! In her defense they run a business and we were taking that away by the cake even though our bill came up to a hefty price because we ordered a lot of food and drinks. The food overall was pretty good, except for some of the pizza crusts which were burnt and we ended up having to pay the cutting fee. As I was actually leaving and heading to my car I realized that my headlights were still on because the place is valet only, unless you wanna park in the opposite lot. I'm not exactly sure how long they were left on, but thankfully my car was able to start! All in all I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, especially since I had to travel someways just to get here thinking the experience would be one for the books. read more

I just had possibly one of the best shepherd's pies I've ever eaten. O.K., it's called Herder's Pie on the menu, but it's pretty much the exact same thing. And my son had the Mac and Cheese appetizer and the Pappardelle with Short ribs. Both incredibly good. Kudos to Paul a great chef and his hardworking crew in the kitchen! A great selection of craft beers and other spirits. The food and drinks were served by Sunny, a wonderful bartender with a personality that matches her name! A standard local tavern / grill with jacked up prices. Avoid the Pork w/ Kimchi Fried rice. The pork was charred on the outside to the point that I wasn't entirely sure if it was bone or not. Once you managed to bite through the hard exterior, there was only fat and no meat. Felt like eating deep fried jello. Also, as a Korean who was force fed Kimchi into adulthood, I can say without a doubt that there was no Kimchi inside that fried rice. It was fried rice you'd find at Panda express. Had dinner here last week. I was attracted by the "Gastropub" title in the ads. Having dined in many Gastro Pubs here and in England I must say THIS IS NO GASTROPUB! The menu was quite limited. There were few choices for anyone who wants to eat slightly healthy. The ambiance was uncomfortable and the temperature was quite chilly. But it was the food that I found quite unacceptable. I selected the cod and chips, thinking that at least I would be having fish. Well it was difficult to find any fish within the greasy breading that I found on my plate and the salad that I ordered was wilted. I most certainly will not return. read more

All I can say is wow. This new place is absolutely gorgeous. Reminds me of an Irish pub. The waitstaff is unbelievable and the food was incredible. Don't forget to try the charred octopus! They also have a great selection of custom drinks and craft beers! You can sit at the bar and watch the flatbread pizza being made! This whole area is smoke free, but, if you want to have a cigar after dinner, you just have to walk next door to the Montecristo Lounge. Too bad you can only give 5 Stars! read more

Family dinner for 4 every Tuesday night. Tonight we tried this. We picked up the meal within seconds of entering the restaurant- easy and excellent service. It says dinner for 4, but three adults, three kids and we have 1/3 of the tray left! We have dinner and lunch for tomorrow for $24.95! Amazing price! The meal is delicious! The salad has roasted asparagus and fresh tomatoes- so good! The pasta, chicken had rich delicious flavors. Pieces of bacon, onions, lots of flavors- not your ordinary penne al a vodka! So much better! Highly recommend you try it!!! Next weeks dinner is herders pie- which is there version of Sheppard pie- I've had it in the restaurant before- it's delicious! My portabella mushroom and arugula flatbread was delicious but my girlfriends chicken pot pie was the star! When you show the server the very well done burger you got and ask him if it looks anything like the MEDIUM RARE you ordered, and he replies THAT'S A MATTER OF OPINION, you know it's not going to be a good night. Three and a half stars! We've dined at Hearth twice now -- those brussel sprouts called us back for our second visit. Highly addictive! Hearth has a nice ambience (the only spoiler is that cigar smoking is allowed in a section of the restaurant and the smell drifts). My companion and I have sampled the mac 'n cheese, salads, and flatbreads (and sprouts!) and we've enjoyed all of them. Service is okay, can be a bit slow if the dining room is full. Hubby had the short ribs which were plentiful and tasty but the gnocchi were hard and chewy. I had a special: crabcake with lobster fries. At $25 each with no sides or salads included they were both pricey. The crabcake was NOT at all what was described on the specials printed sheet. Altho the crabcake was very good it sat on a couple tablespoons of lukewarm hash brown potatoes that included maybe a "fleck" or two of lobster which you really had to hunt for. We both had clam chowder which was excellent. It had a crunchy piece of bread which soaked up the soup and added another texture. The "sprouts" used as garnish were a waste of time and effort. 2 drinks, 2 chowders and 2 entrees with tip ran $120. read more

Arrived 15 minutes after a phone call reservation for early (5:30) Saturday Evening. Assured on the phone we wouldn't have to go through the "smoking" section to be seated. Though true, while walking the short distance from mandatory valet parking you are exposed to ventilation fans from the smoking section- kind of a downer to whet your appetite. We were greeted by a cynical hostess who left the impression that she didn't believe we called in advance, asking us to give the name of the person we spoke to. Candidly I had forgotten and when I guessed the wrong name, I got the "yeah, right" look. The three of us were seated and the waitress started out ok, getting our drink orders. When she delivered them, she seemed put out that we didn't order up front appetizers, rather we asked to share two appetizers to be brought at the same time our entrees arrive. (Is that so crazy?) One entree (flatbread) arrived first and by itself. And that was it for about 7-8 minutes. Maybe more. It was so long, it became a topic of conversation. It sat on the table cooling down to room temperature by the time the rest of our orders arrived. Restaurant 101 fail. One of us ordered a red wine that wasn't delivered with dinner. Reminding the waitress, she apologized and bolted off to return with a white wine. No big deal to turn back, but another oops. The food was good. Herder's pie was good and fresh- heavy lamb presence. Flatbread was good despite the temp. Steak and Porter pie tasted good, (excellent puff pastry) but more of a vegetarian plate because the ratio of meat to vegetables was about 1:20. (Opposite to Herders pie which was meat heavy!?) Sides of Onion Rings (tasty!!) and Mac & Cheese (tasty too!) we're good and fair portions to share a little. Waitress never came back to check on us. After we were finished, a nice good waiter came by to ask about desserts or coffee. Apparently the waitress quit, or left the premises, or maybe her shift was just over, who knows? We opted for the check to which we applied a coupon. Before the coupon the bill came to $85. I applied a 15+% to the original amount because I don't like tipping 20 to mediocre-bad service. The coup de grace was going out to Valet parking and it was unclear what the process was. Employees seemed to be confused and there was no semblance of order. When I walked up to where it looked like I should hand a ticket in, I was RUDELY ordered to bring it to "The Valet Station" and was pointed in the general direction where there was a portable desk with an umbrella on it that looked like it rolled 50 feet away from where it should be. Meanwhile our car was running in a parking space close to the road so I handed one of the Valet kids my ticket and told him I'd get it myself. A fitting disappointing ending to a disappointing overall experience. So while the food was good, the experience was lousy. Enough to override the good food. I wanted this place to be good and be added to the list of regular places I could bring people to. I have to say, too bad. read more

Haven't been to the porterhouse in a few years so we were surprised to find it had completely changed when made the reservation for Easter brunch. We were really impressed with the renovation of the the old main dining room, the architecture was impressive with its attention to detail found at every corner, keeping in line with a true rustic old European pub, and in line with the front of the house that always had that feel. The food was delicious and nice portions. The brunch was off the menu which suits the place well, and nIce to be able to stay seated while enjoying our breakfast feast of steak and eggs. My brother in law had the chicken pot pie at the suggestion of the lovely Irish waitress who said it will spoil him for all others, and she was correct! Spicy Bloody marys a perfect Guinness, delicious unique bread pudding dessert, and great service topped off this perfect meal! Even the coffee was above par! We will be back!! read more

I wanted to try everything on the menu but ended up choosing the Brussels sprouts and the bacon pineapple flatbread. The sprouts were amazing. They tasted like sesame chicken but better. The flatbread was fluffy and delicious. My boyfriend loved his hanger steak. This place was a happy accident we stumbled upon when where we originally planned to go was too crowded and I'm so glad we did. Very disappointed. My husband and daughter made a reservation and took me there for my birthday. They made the hostess aware that this was a birthday celebration and they said they would let the server know. dinner was very good and we moved on to dessert. We have been there several times since it changed hands, but this is the THIRD TIME they didn't have rice pudding (If you're not going to make it take it off the menu) So we ordered another dessert and my daughter expected a candle to be in the cake, nothing!(They had just done it for another table) The manager came over to the table to see how everything was and we explained the above. The restaurant has been completely redone. It's an amazing transformation. I'm not sure if the new look is an improvement. The old place was more elegant and high end. The new place is cozier and more family friendly. The new menu is completely different. The steak portion has been vastly diminished. However, the new items are farm fresh and the portions are generous. Prices have dropped from the more elegant steak house that was here previously. Definitely worth the try. The new establishment kept the cigar bar in tact and is the only place to smoke a cigar in that section of NJ/NY indoors. read more

I went here for dinner. There was valet (which i was not prepared for). There was an upstairs and downstairs. The place was sectioned off into multiple rooms. Thought it was different but the atmosphere was pretty laid back and the vibe was great. We started off at the bar while we waited for the rest of our party to arrive. Drink menu looked great. What i ordered was great too. We sat for dinner in the booths upstairs. It was an unusual way of seating us and it was so tight....after an hour of sitting there, we were all ansy. Note to restaurant, supply coat hangers at ends of booths so we don't have to sit with our heavy winter coats on the bench seating.
