This has always been a repeat spot, but frankly, the last two visits in the past couple months have affirmed that this is one of my favorite places in NYC and where I take folks to have a STANDOUT meal. Each of recent visits the service has been exceptional. They sent welcome drinks while the waiters took longer than expected. Amuse bouches, etc. Things to add those special touches. The food is out of this world. The stuffed rosette pasta was WOW and don't even get me started on that half chicken. Like drool, lick your damn plate clean. It's juicy and tender and just hits so good. The steak, the pastas, etc. You can't go wrong. I mean the charred cabbage and Brussels may hands down be some of my fav veg in NYC. I love this restaurant, from the candles and rustic vibes, to the food, wines and service. Service is attentive, a professional watching our table, plating courses, nearly always nearby, not over-the-top formally dressed, and also not slow/unprofessional...just how we like it. Particularly liked how the dishes were, for the most part plated at once. Food - I particularly love the cuisine, here. The fire and smoke in all the food is divine and unique. Unfortunately going to have to find my receipt because it's been 2 weeks since we ate this meal, and all I can remember is the amazing chicken main, artichoke starter, pastas, pizza and liking the Caesar very much, though a bit heavy on cheese and light coverage on dressing, still amazing! Then...other than the vibes and that the Sommelier recommended excellent wines, including introducing a new favorite, need that receipt for meal details because the menu changes. I feel like slightly elevated, hip yet rustic Italian restaurants are a dime a dozen in lower Manhattan these days. They've replaced the red sauce neighborhood eateries of the 90s and are gradually fading into history together with the "millennial optimism" trend on TikTok. For me, Peasant is firmly in this category. The restaurant is perhaps best known for its whole pig dinner, which naturally offends my vegetarian sensibilities. For people like me, the entree offering is a rigatoni alla vodka, which was a spicy take on the classic. I liked it, although I'm probably more partial to the version at Parm. Our table also shared the Caesar salad, burrata and roasted squash. I liked the first two, but one of our party commented that the smokiness from the squash was a bit too "cigarette-forward." read more

This place is amazing. The ambience is super beautiful. It's like walking into an amazing Italian restaurant with dripping candles and the energies awesome it's got a really really cool vibe. The food was absolutely delicious. We had the steak. It was so good. The brussels sprouts was great and the carbonara pasta was so good. Highly recommend they also had wine that was in from Italy and the wine maker was there who came to the table and actually sat and talked about the wine. It was such a beautiful night so great absolutely love this place. Highly recommend great for a friends family date night totally awesome. Definitely my new favorite place service was really fast. If you want to be treated like a peasant, then Peasant restaurant is for you. Had a reservation for 3 people and they wanted to shove us in a corner at a table for 2. When we asked for another table we were shown to a table where if someone sat at the bar seat their butt would literally be in our face. Instead of just walking out we asked nicely if they had a table in the back and once again shown to the 3rd worst table in the place, next to the kitchen. They clearly didn't want us there. Big mistake. Huge. We were planning to spend a lot of $. Take your $ elsewhere, the service is horrible. Oh and you will stink like coal so wear crappy clothes. read more

I had a lovely experience here! My friends and I were seated downstairs. We walked down stairs outside of the restaurant and it was basically a separate dining room. The downstairs felt like a little rustic cave but in the best way possible. It felt very cozy with the dark wood/interior, dim lighting, and candles. There is a single stall bathroom in this downstairs dining area. We got: - 50/50 tuna tartare: it came with bread "pillow" which was fluffy and soft. I really liked this! My favorite appetizer we got - prosciutto: this came with a few strips of prosciutto, another bread "pillow" and - rigatoni: this was really good! It was hot when it came out but super flavorful and I thought it was good portion. - buccanti: this came in mason jar then the server shook it out for my friend. I thought this was okay compared to the rigatoni Service was good but I had to ask for water a couple times before our glasses were refilled. read more

Great Italian spot in nolita. SO enjoyed a Fiona cocktail while I had a lager. For starters we had a caesar salad, roasted oysters and octopus. For entrees we had the rosette and suckling pig along with a side of snap peas. We topped it off with the torta caprese, which was decadent. We were a party of four on Thanksgiving. We got a really nice circular table in the rear of the virtually all candle lit beautiful restaurant. Our choice was the standard turkey with multi sides for the table included Brussels sprouts, dressing, yams and something with mushrooms. All over the top delicious. After lots of wine and tons of fun we finished with apple pie ala mode. I know it sounds passé, let me tell you it was anything but. We were treated like long lost friends by everybody. Our waitstaff was very attentive and kept our wine glasses filled. We were visited tableside by the owner chef, who was friendly and welcoming. Another time that I'm torn. Not really a 3 star place - closer to a 4 star place but not quite a 4 star in my book. But i give the rating based on which number of stars it is closer to. We arrived early and the hostess seemed a little agitated / annoyed and at first just said that they were not open. I think the owner came by to tell us that we could wait at the bad instead of just waiting in entrance. Even then, when they did open, the hostess didn't come over to us to tell us that the table was ready - instead, just started seating people as they came in. To be clear, the bar wasn't open either and they weren't serving us. The appetizers are good - salad and the squid. The squid was spicy and more of a grilled. Had a nice topping that reminds me of a chimmichurri sauce. I had the roasted chicken which I like the concept but all of the extremities were burned because I think they try to make it a single portion and therefore a small chicken. They may want to think about making that more of a table/family type of offering and just have the larger chicken. Others in our party had pastas which were good - not overly salted and very balanced. Desert was also very well balanced - not too sweet and very satisfying. I like the vibe of the place. Enjoyed a delicious dinner at Peasant. Dark, intimate, candlelit vibes set the tone for the evening. We started with the bruschetta special, prosciutto, and the grilled octopus. What an extraordinary meal! You wander into a candlelit decadent country home - brick walls, open fires, romantic as hell. The sound ši energetic and the staff is lovely - welcoming and cheerful. From the sommelier (who told us so much about white vermouth and gin runners that our heads swam!) to the lovely server who sent us home - every course was magnificent. The amuse bouche had layers of flavor, the crab bruschetta was piles of crab on fluffy country bread. The signature Rosetta pasta came in an iron skillet and the rotisserie chicken flavored with exotic smoke from the woodfire was already succulent but dipped in the citrus butter you thought you were going to die. Get the polenta and eat it quickly before it clumps and get the asparagus and sigh over the mascarpone. Get the fantastically light raspberry pistachio strati dessert. You think you have no room but if you get one of the many flavored espresso martinis you will be laughing and chatting well into the night anyway so you'll get a second wind. Fabulous place. I went here celebrating a friends birthday, we were really excited to try this place. The ambiance was nice, what we didnt love was the pasta and the service. I ordered a pasta dish and it came with a massive mound of cheese on top, which was not disclosed on the menu. The menu said ricotta and I assumed that it was going to be incorporated into the dish with the sauce or a glob on the top. What I got looked very similar to finally grated parmesan cheese and was about 2-3 inches in height covering the whole dish. This is where the problem started. When I brought this up to our waitress, she told me that it was on the menu and i would have seen it if i read it, then gave me a dirty look. I felt embarrassed and my friends were also uncomfortable and said that this amount of cheese would upset my stomach. She stared at me and finally my friends stood up for me asking if we could have a new one without the cheese on the top. After a long pause and her obvious annoyance she took the dish back. Ive never felt so uncomfortable in my life especially somewhere where we were suppose to be splurging on a nice meal. Im not going to go into detail about the food itself, but just know there are much tastier places to go in the city with nicer service. After looking at the menu now its no longer there. This incident happened in May 2025 and we still talk about it to this day. read more

I was super excited to try this place out because of the ambience of the spot and it honestly didn't disappoint. Dimly lit and candles all around. My grievance is with the service and the main dishes that we ordered. While we were finishing up on our appetizers the server came in and asked us if we were done to change our plates and asked for a couple more minutes so we could finish, right after he left our server came and asked the same thing and I told her the same thing, she decided to clear the plates anyway... why ask at all then?! My pasta was burnt on top and that just ruined all of the potential for it to be a great dish, my friend's chicken was also kinda meh. I've had two pieces of the pasta and she had barely touched the chicken. The plates were taken away and nobody asked if anything was wrong with the food ‍ Regardless of all the above Caesar salad was really good and so is the sourdough pillow. A cozy spot for Italian eats tucked into the Nolita area -- the interior is so rustic and charming, really loved the brick, wooden tables and candlelight details. It's a great spot for a date night or dinner with friends! The waiters here were really nice and good at making recommendations. We got apps to share and they have different sizes for entrees if you're sharing versus not, which was great. I highly recommend everything we got, including the Snap Peas and Burrata appetizers and Vodka Rigatoni! I'd come back to try some of the fish entrees and more of the pastas. read more

Was in the Bowery area looking for a nice place to eat dinner with a friend. Stumbled across Peasant and called in to make reservation. Unfortunately fully booked on a Tuesday evening but bar seating available (which is a good sign for a fully booked restaurant on a Tuesday). 15 minutes later I receive a call back from the restaurant and the lovely hostess advises a table has opened up after a cancellation and so we immediately grabbed the table. I've never had that happen where the restaurant calls you back and on top of that was humble and apologetic for calling without any notification. Already a ++ for service and making sure the customer comes first. Service - something you would expect at a Michelin rated restaurant but without the robotic nature. Everyone was so genuine and hospitable. The hostess our server and even the owners were so welcoming, checking in our table to make sure everything was ok. Definitely made the experience thet much more rewarding and fun. Food - so delicious and cooked to perfection didn't take any pictures but started with the grilled octopus, followed by our mains (Rigatoni & Suckling Pig). WOW is all I can say. Full of flavor, octopus grilled perfectly with no chewy gaminess, pasta cooked perfectly al dente and sauce to match, and finally suckling pig - crisp tasty skin with juice moist meat. Amazing dishes. Drinks - tasty and delicious cocktails that are fairly priced. Mint Chocolate Espresso Martini is worth trying. Ambiance - loved the decor and theme with old skool church pews and candle lit room. Just a great vibe. Definitely looking forward to coming back. The ambiance was really cool in the downstairs tables but I thought the food was just alright and I wished I liked it more. We did have an accompaniment of wine though that were all delicious. - the appetizers were all generally good: Caesar salad was well dressed, the burrata was more of a spread but still tasty, and the octopus was tender and not spicy despite description - the carbonara bucatini was interesting because you shook the jar yourself, but it was a bit too liquid and I ended up not getting any pieces of meat so not much texture difference. The vodka rigatoni was much better - the chicken, suckling pig, and the steak generally all had good texture but the flavor was lacking in all 3 I thought. Perhaps, they were letting the meat shine on its own but I could've used a more flavorful sauce - I liked the apple crisp + evoo Gelato the most from the desserts; the ginger cookies and brownies were passable read more

My husband and I come to Peasant every time we're in the city. It's just one of those places that is special to us so we make it a point to come back when we can. A cute little bistro-esque restaurant with dim lighting and moody vibes. Cool taper candles, brick accents, just all around a good energy in here. Italian style food but with a flare. Everything here is good you really can't get a bad meal. Prosciutto and fresh baked bread is a non-negotiable. What was really cool about this specific dinner was they had one of their wine vendors in to talk about their product and process back in Italy. Just kind of a cool thing to have featured vendors and learn more about the wine you're drinking. We will be back, we love it here. read more

Went in with low expectations of typical "farm to table" with perhaps a live, laugh, love sign on the wall. Boy was I wrong about everything I expected. This was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. It's Italian oriented but not sure I've had flavors like this in my travels through Italy. That's a compliment because everything was off the charts. Even the very simple charred Brussels and cabbage with a slightly sweet and tangy sauce. No idea how they got just the perfect char on the cabbage so it added flavor vs bitterness. The hamachi crudo was thickly sliced and the liquid and spices they added to it brought it all together. The rigatoni I've read they are famous for and should be. Then these short rib tortellini with I think some breadcrumbs on them blew our minds. The beef stew was like I've never had before - the tripe was tender but chewy and tasted almost like bacon. The stew sauce was silky and amazing. It was just all really great. Rabbit pasta....skate in tomatoes and capers...pork in this amazing sauce with a touch of crème (yes with pork and it was fucking amazing). Service was also outstanding....and I'm not one to care too much about this. I think the kids name was Andrew and he knew his stuff....kept the pace perfect...almost made it like a chefs tasking with family style. Solid choice for good food. You are greeted by the scent of the wood fire oven as you enter. Loved they use real candles to add to the ambiance. It was a small dinner and we had: wood roasted oysters calamari steak tartare hamachi crudo Bucatini carbonara Mafaldine Bigoli Nero Suckling pig Branzino Bone in strip Sugar snap peas Caesar Salad Highly recommend the sugar snap peas. They were IMHO the best dish. They are a side, bump cooked in the wood oven. The gentle smoke was a great flavor add to the plump peas! The other dishe I recommend are the calamari-it's roasted, juicy, and the zoodles served with were nicely spiced and bigoli nero (chili lobster with squid ink)-the pasta was perfectly al dented, the lobster chunks in shells were relatively easy to eat, and the sauce was yummy. Skip the bucatini carbonara and mafaldine (metballs with pasta in spicy sauce). The Caesar was overdressed and the steak tartar was served with warm pita pillow on top...ran out of tartare long before the pita. Hamachi crudo was pretty standard in ponzu sauce. Wow What a disaster I didn't pay since it was my birthday but it was so NOTgood that I felt bad. So bad that I bought us shitty Prince street pizza after. Not my choice. I hate that I even have to write a bad review and I'm so beside myself, but man was this a disappointing experience. I almost need to catch myself and re-write this later when I can recompose my brain cells after how shockingly disappointing last night was. Maybe it was me, maybe I ordered wrong; I didn't know I was supposed to get the suckling pig, I didn't really scope the place out beforehand. The veal porterhouse just tasted like burnt flavor, tender but not tasty, the oysters were oysters, not super impressive as they wanted it to be. Slow drink service, wanted another for quite a while and when the pasta came to the table with cheese on top, unfortunately she doesn't like that sort of heavenly thing, so they took it away, took off the top layer of pasta, and brought it back to the table. The pasta wasn't even good quality, 5 rigatonis shouldn't stick together but I did try it and think it had a delicious flavor. All in all I actually don't think it was crazy expensive and I'm wishing I tried the suckling pig. I wasn't paying attention I guess. I'd say next time but I just don't think we'd give them another chance. Sad because I'm sure it's good. Babi Guling is one of the best meals in this planet if done right. TLDR: A beautiful candelight tavern meets speakeasy vibe with unique italian dishes. We started off with the Proscuitto, Bone Marrow Oysters, Burrata and Pizza. The Oysters were a burst of flavor and a must try here for me. Of the main dishes- I was disappointed with the steak. We ordered Medium Rare but it came out closer to Medium well and honestly burnt on the edges. The Lobster pasta with calabrian chilis was definitely redeeming for the entrees. The presentation, cook on the pasta and flavor in the sauce were all impeccable! The pineapple dessert came highly recommended by the waiter and though I was a big fan of the coconut and vanilla gelato, the pastry itself wasn't anything special. read more

Beautiful restaurant, with great vibes. When you walk in the restaurant is lit by hundreds of candles. Service was great, very attentive staff. Food was generally pretty good, though I had to order the suckling pig and though tasty and loved the little rib on top. Some parts of the dish were served room temperature vs hot which is a pet peeve of mine. The short-rib pasta was very very good and highly recommend! Octopus was good, though relatively small. Ahhh! Peasant made my first experience here such a great one! So happy I stopped in. Eric was so great with us. I came here for a business meeting , all I wanted was pasta and good wine. Peasant did just that and some. I have to return to experience the menu entirely. We dined downstairs in the wine bar , which was cool . There was an event happening in the main dining area. No sweat they accommodated us swiftly. The hostess I believe her name was Nya she was so pleasant and helpful. Ok food! I ordered the smoked linguine and boy was I satisfied! TLDR: Closer to a 3.5 for me. It wasn't bad but nothing massively impressive. Would I come back? Possibly if I was in the area but probably wouldn't make a whole trip for it. We stopped in here randomly during the week and snagged an outdoor table to come have dinner with our dog. We tried a bit from each category. Server was excellent but the food was coming out on the slower side. For the starters, the Octopus was excellent. Spicy, tender, savory. The server did make it a point to explain though that this dish has been on the menu from the beginning. Not a surprise it was tasty. Prosciutto was excellent but then again, a lot of restaurant prosciuttos are good. We tried three pastas. Rigatoni alla Vodka was highly recommended by the server and I'll admit that it was quite tasty. The Smoked Linguini with Razor Clams sounded very interesting. Flavors were decent (super garlicky) but way too oily for me. Quite possibly the oiliest pasta I've ever had. Lamb Ragu with lasagna sheets was also very delicious. We got the Suckling Pig which was not bad but for $38, I'd skip it. Flourless chocolate cake was good but nothing particularly noteworthy. Again - not bad but there are a lot of excellent Italian eateries to be had in Manhattan. If I were to come back, I'd stick to some apps and a couple pastas. I would say this was a 3.5 star experience. It was good, but I wasn't blown away. With all of the options in NYC, I probably won't return, although I wouldn't discourage anyone else from going. I ordered the rigatoni which was good. Not great. Pretty much what I expected though. The veal was cooked perfectly. It was quite good. I do recommend that. As a pastry chef, I was not blown away by any of the dessert choices. I ordered the flourless cake because I really wanted a few bites of something sweet and didn't want to traipse out in the rain for another place. Flourless cake is pretty boring though. My favorite resturant in the world so far .. the sucking pig is everything and the sauce of out of this world . First let me say the succulent pig was super juicy where it needed to be and super crispy where it needed it's a piece of art and the sauce at the bottom just brings it all together . Then the Rosett was also amazing the spare rib was cooked perfectly before being stuffed in pasta then cooked in the brick oven just finnished it off perfectly . We did the special whole pig dinner with a big group of friends. tl;dr the roast pig was a letdown, under seasoned and the skin was inedible. The sides were actually much better than the pig itself. Charcuterie, Pizza Bianca were decent (not great). For $125/pp plus tax/tip this experience just wasn't worth it even with very respectable portion sizes for the family style situation. I hadn't been to Peasant in a few years, since the new owners took over. All I can say is WOW! The food and service were amazing, better than I remembered, and I did like it a lot years ago. Our waiter Bobby was friendly and knew about each meal we ordered. A lovely woman, Karen, came to check on us and when we asked what the person next to us was eating, she brought us over a sample. Everyone went out of their way to say hello and the vibe in this restaurant was upbeat & fabulous. I now wish I had taken more photos of the food but I guess we ate it too fast.
