We came to Zimmi's to celebrate my birthday & had our reservation for 6:30 pm on a Tuesday and were seated promptly by the door. The space is charming and gives a cute French bistro/cafe vibe. There are a few tables and a small bar area, so not too much seating. Would recommend making a reservation or coming at opening time. A very cozy restaurant to visit. The menu the gave us was a little different from their menu listed online & it seems it changes offerings depending on the season. The food I'd give an overall 4 stars but the service was very kind & attentive so bumping it to a 5 star. The menu is on the expensive side so it's more of a big budget meal/date night/special occasion kind of restaurant. We ordered the following items for two of us (we can eat a fair amount): -terrine de lapeareau ($25): described as a rabbit pate/meat terrine. It came out in a small block topped with some crispy sage leaves they get from an upstate NY farm & a hunk of sourdough bread from La Cabra Bakery. The rabbit wasn't gamey at all like I thought it might be, it tastes similar to other pate-y meats. I think the server had said if we like charcuterie we would like this & it's true. It's very well salted & seasoned & pairing it with the sourdough bread adds a balanced savoriness to it (although I do say the crusty bread hurt my mouth a little so be careful eating it). My bf is a little sensitive to salt & thought it was almost on the edge of too salty but it wasn't. It was the perfect amount of salted umami flavor paired with the bread, especially for someone who tends to like salty foods (me). If you can imagine the saltiness & umami of prosciutto, it's kind of like that. -omelette ($30): an omelette with porcini mushrooms The omelette is buttery & rich yet mild & soft. The flavor is very subtle, with maybe a whisper of a mushroom flavor. While pretty tasty, I'm not sure it was unique enough to want to reorder again or pay $30 for it. -blettes farcis ($32): veal stuffed swiss chard (I think this item switches up seasonally but usually some type of meat stuffed vegetable in broth) This dish was very tasty in a homey, rustic way. It came with 3 rolled meat/veggie pieces, served with a few vegetables on the side in a vegetable broth. When you combine all the components together, it's a very comforting bite. The salty vegetable broth enhances the meat wrapped inside the veggie & there's a small crunch element from the accessory spring vegetables in the bowl. There's a touch of maybe citrus or lemon in the soup that gives it a brightness tying the flavors together. Very tasty! -la pastasciutta ($30): tagliatelle w/ chicken ragout On paper this just sounds like a normal pasta but it was delicious, my bf's favorite dish - he contemplated ordering a 2nd one immediately haha. The one we had felt like a chicken liver pasta, I later asked and I think a server confirmed it's little bits like chicken heart/gizzard/liver etc like offals. The pasta was creamy & savory & I believe whatever the sauce is probably stewed for awhile. There was maybe like a hint of acidity from whatever I remember or earthiness flavor? Don't let my description scare you off, the dish was very well balanced & satisfying to eat. We were scraping any bits of the meat and sauce before they took the plate away (they were very understanding haha). -feuilles de courgette ($16): seasonal spring item of squash leaves The server told us the squash leaves are a pretty short season/seasonal item so we had to get it & they served it with the veal rillette we got at the end. While the squash leaves themselves weren't any different from other veggies for me, it was overall very well seasoned. It was dressed in a delicious high quality EVOO & tasted like it had lots of garlic (yum yum up my alley). Great to pair with a meaty dish. -pané d'agneau ($48): crispy lamb rillettes w/ softboiled egg & market greens We've had duck rillettes before so were curious how a lamb rillette would taste. I'm kind of ambivalent on lamb depending on how it's prepared (ie. I enjoy the heavily seasoned Chinese lamb skewers but other lamb dishes are sometimes too gamey for me) but I was willing to try the dish out. It's definitely very crispy on the outside, soft meat on the side & still tastes like lamb (for lamb lovers this is great haha). I'd say as an ambivalent lamb eater, the flavor was a very tad strong for me but definitely still doable. It pairs well with the sauce that I believe is like a smoky paprika sauce of some sort that kinda cancels out any potential natural gaminess of lamb. The market green salad that came with is is also delicious & dressed with some bright citrus so everything works together even if you're not a huge lamb lover. Being the most expensive item we ordered though, if you're not a lamb lover I'd say maybe try a different item. I was very lucky to snag a seat in this tiny, cute French-ish spot. With only 32 seats and 5 bar stools. It fills up fast! The jockeying is worth it. The menu Bletee Farcee was changed to chicken on the day I visited. I'm sure the original lamb (?) was great, but the Chard wrapped ground chicken was magnificent. The shallow bowl arrived allowing an explosion of chard and pea flavors to fill the air. They waded in a bowl of delicate broth to make this a perfect appetizer. I'm not a big fish eater, so it is difficult for me to compare Black Cod preparations, but I did enjoy this more potent cod. Sitting on a bed of wild rice and peas, it looked as good as it eats. I actually went to this restaurant after seeing a play at the Cherry Lane theater. Which I highly recommend, as It is very convenient geographically. I went on a Monday evening so parking was very easy to acquire. The staff was absolutely fabulous 10/10 I could not have felt more comfortable as a solo diner. The food was delicious, I am still thinking about the Lamb stew ....it was so comforting. I would say the restaurant was cozy, dimly lit and bathrooms were clean and rustic. My favorite restaurant in nyc! Delicious, fun dishes and exceptional service. We had our anniversary dinner here and needed to wait 10ish minutes for a table to finish. The host (owner) was very transparent and gave us drinks to enjoy while we waited. When we sat down, he also immediately brought a delicious appetizer for us to enjoy while looking through the menu. All the vegetables are sourced from a specific farm they work with and are in season! Server went through all the menu options with us and shared incredible recommendations based on what we were looking for. Delicious non-alcoholic selection as well! Zimmi's was the second new French West Village restaurant I tried during this visit to NYC, the other was Le Chene. It opened in December last year. It's a petite corner spot with a decent-sized menu which seems to change fairly often and is certainly more upscale than tradition French bistro fare. I ordered 4 dishes: 1) Legumes frits. Fresh veggies fried in a light and crispy tempura-like batter served with an anchovy-based aioli. 2) Soupe de celeri. Chilled celery soup, creamy but non-dairy, topped with creme fraiche. 3) Poulet printanier. Chicken with spring vegetables and lettuce. 4) Brown sugar meringue roulade with cherries and almond. I loved everything. The soup was perhaps the most traditional dish, and my least favourite, but still very good. If I lived nearby and had a large dining-out budget, I'd be here weekly. read more

We had a wonderful meal at Zimmi's. The ambiance inside was very cozy yet upscale and transported us to Paris. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable and kind to us. They had a great selection of wine and I enjoyed my glass of Rhône. We then started with the Tarte Salle which incorporated octopus and other Mediterranean elements. It was out of my food comfort zone but I found it enjoyable and paired well with the wine. We then split the omelette and tagliatelle which were phenomenal. My friend and I got their pesto pasta and special chicken dish of the day. I absolutely loved their pesto pasta and would highly recommend. At 5:45, the place was packed, tables 2" apart. One had to scream just to put in the order, let alone trying for a conversation with my dinner companion. She ordered the goat cheese omelet (served naked and pale) and I, stuffed vegetables Nicois (4 tiny things secreted with maybe a teaspoon of meat each). Both were unsatisfying ... as were the drinks -a pale rose filled an 1/8th of a wine glass and my Corsaire, a tequila cocktail consumed with ice cubes. We made a reservation a few weeks back and have been on the edge of our seat to try the food; upon our arrival we were quickly taken to our table (highly recommend making a reservation). We were then given our menus and asked if we wanted to kick-off with some drinks, I had a dirty martini (so perfect) and my boyfriend had a half bottle of Syrah (which was chilled and full of flavor) From there we placed our food order: Appetizers: - French fries (not on the menu, these fries blew our mind! Crispy and full of seasoning!) - Moules Farcies (these mussels are incredible! And trying to explain the flavor would not do it justice) order this dish!! Main courses: - Pasta Davia (the pesto alongside the beans just melted my heart! Very solid French food! It gets quite loud but the ambiance is casual and romantic at the same time. Service is quick and very attentive. Their wine selection is very good and they offer half bottles too with a big selection. We started with the salad with hazelnuts, socca and foie gras with Sauternes. They were all very good but the salad was a bit salty. Then we shared the salmon, fries and pesto pasta. I thought both the fries and the pesto pasta was a bit salty but I enjoyed all dishes. Nothing screams cozy winter dinner quite like Zimmis. This relaxed French-inspired spot is the kind of place where you can bring your parents, impress a date, or sit solo and act like you're sophisticated while devouring your food with zero shame. On my last visit, my Aunt and I claimed the corner seat behind the coat rack at the bar; hidden, snug, and basically our own little secret. The space is soft, dimly lit, and unpretentious, letting the food do all the talking... and it has a lot to say. Speaking of which: the white wine. Crisp, bright, and impossible to ignore; basically bottled happiness in a glass. And the lamb stew? Tender, messy, and ridiculously flavorful, paired with olive-oil-infused pomme purée that somehow makes mushy food feel like luxury. Honestly, I can't even pick a favorite. Every bite and sip felt like a small, smug victory. Zimmis is cozy, unshowy, and absolutely indulgent. Basically, it's winter in a seat and a glass of wine. But the lamb-stuffed cabbage had a very weird flavor that neither of us could eat. The side of fries were limp and underdone (surprising given how universally positive the reviews of their fries are...) Big disappointment in the madelines for dessert. PEOPLE OF COLOR -- CAUTION BEFORE YOU VISIT. We visited Zimmi's once before and loved the food, so when my birthday came around, it felt like the natural choice. Unfortunately, this visit left us deeply disappointed and uncomfortable. From the moment we arrived, something felt off. The hostess handed menus to everyone waiting except us. Once seated, tables that came in after us had their orders taken first. Both tables adjacent to us were served water and we were not. No one checked in to ask how our food was or whether we wanted dessert, something the tables right next to us received without issue. We walked out after an hour. We're not ones to jump to conclusions, but the pattern was consistent and hard to ignore. Every omission, every skip, every moment of inattention landed on our table and our table alone. As brown customers, this did not feel like coincidence. It felt like discrimination. It's genuinely disappointing because our first visit gave us no reason to expect this. We can't in good conscience recommend this place to other people of color. If you're visiting, go in with your eyes open. read more

Love the location. The interior albeit tight, and small, was still cozy and lovely on these cold winter evenings. The service was superb. It was, at times hard to hear the server, especially when he was sharing the specials and describing the dishes but that minor inconvenience was overshadowed but every moment there. The drink I ordered, I don't remember the name, BUT I remember the main ingredient was saffron gin and she was delightful. The ratatouille and stuffed mussels were delectable. I don't typically like ratatouille but this one won me over. Perfectly seasoned, severed room temp and slightly spicy I think.. made me cough a bit. Haha.. not sure why. The mussels were so fresh. So well seasoned. So perfectly cooked. I would order again and again and I'm not usually one for a hot mussel lol.. but this one was divine!! The pork collar. Get! It! Quaint and unpretentious. Superb french home cooking. The joint is basically tucked into this padded enclave in the west village where you have to walk 2 blocks in any direction to hit any real traffic. This makes the corner super quiet and pleasant: very evocative of what I glean they're going for here. The menu is short and simple: home cooking from the french countryside. The chef is clearly bold enough to take risks (vegetable terrine and a ratatouille in the winter) but it pays off. The terrine was simple, nothing too crazy, but really good. The lamb stew warmed my heart. Delicious and exemplary of the best you can hope for from a grandmother with a lifetime of experience. Even though the place just opened, it felt like everyone was a regular. Someone at the bar was eating alone and chatting with the manager and it didn't seem like an employee?? Prices were reasonable, save for a $250 truffle pasta which we politely declined. Great spot and I hope they change the menu quickly so that I can come back and try more. read more

A great little restaurant that focuses on Southern French cuisines. Though the plates are traditional they are prepared in a contemporary French rethinking. The sauces are still there but no cream, at least in the ones I ordered. And there is a spoon to help you eat your meat, fish or vegetable with its sauce or there is sourdough side order. In the dishes, the fresh herbs come through not only aromatically but you can taste a bit of their green chalkiness on their own. In the fish dish I ordered there was a satisfying accompaniment of vegetables that ranged from savory to bitter. There are also delicious Southern French wines, many of which can be served in a half bottle. Leave room for the spectacular soft meringue with fresh cherries. Highly recommended. read more

I spend a lot of time in France, and have not tasted any dishes in the US that evoked the same sense memories as my meal at Zimmi's. Everything is relatively simple, but perfectly executed with tremendous attention to detail. The legumes frites and cote de boeuf were particularly noteworthy, the pasta was perfectly cooked, and the salad was incredibly clean, seemingly comprised of whatever the freshest ingredients the team could find that day. They do not allow corkage, but the wine list is extensive and has reasonably priced options for any palate. Zimmi's is a new French restaurant in the West Village. A small, quaint, cozy dining room with a few seater bar, excellent service, and great food. We had; Sourdough bread and butter - very good. Soupe D'Artichaut - artichoke soup with foie gras. This was excellent, a nice piece of foie gras lays in the middle of the soup. The contrasting flavors of the soup to foie gras made the dish. La Pastasciutta - tagliatelle with chicken ragu. Favorite dish of the night and one of the best new pastas in the city. Pasta Davia - linguine with pesto genovese and beans. Zimmi's can do pasta as this was another great dish. The pesto sauce was excellent. Note - both pastas are decent size portions with a lot of flavor. They could easily be an entree for one. Saupiquet D'Agneau - lamb stew, packed a very herbal flavor and the lamb meat was tender and juicy. It was very good. Side Of Fries - excellent big portion of fries that were being offered with the special steak for the night or as a side dish. Rice pudding - creamy and good. Zimmi's was crowded the night we went and will probably be getting more popular in the weeks to come. Reservations are recommended. read more

Service is excellent. Staff is very professional while also being candid and kind. The fried vegetables are perfect, no oil residue at all and every piece was fried equally. A very well done appetizer imo and the sauce is addicting. The pate is excellent and the crust pieces are amazing which is what you want to see Pesto pasta was the best dish and they split one portion into two dishes without the request which was very nice. Good amount of sauce and pasta was cooked properly. The bass entree was great and perfectly cooked. Perfect amount of cream in the sauce. The lamb dish was also perfectly cooked but strangely had some very tough pieces that were impossible to chew which was surprising and disappointing because of the price tag. Overall the experience was amazing enough for me to leave five stars and I doubt the lamb dish regularly has tough pieces like I experienced. Wow!!! This place that has only been open for three months is going to be hard to get reservations for. One word.amazing. The bartender, Orrin is spectacular. He makes a great martini and is it so incredibly customer friendly that we were sold on the place just from him. His suggestions were spot on every single dish we had was orgasmic. The pasta. Davila was ridiculously good. The artichoke soup with pate was probably one of the best soups I ever had. I love the sourdough bread that was seared with the butter. The ratatouille was good. But I'm not a big rat ratatouille fan. Lori loved it. The favorite was definitely this crepe that had greens on it that was ridiculously good. I don't see it on any of the menus that are posted. So maybe it's new. We definitely wanted to try the vanilla ice cream dessert as well as the chocolate dessert. But I was simply too stuffed. I also definitely would love to try the beef which looked phenomenal, but was way too much for just the two of us. The minimum is 33 ounces at seven dollars an ounce. I was hopeful this would be a great meal as this is one of those viral new spots in the city. It's hard to trust influencers these days though, so I tempered my expectations. Glad I did. The best way to describe the experience is honestly just mid. Ambience gets no more than 2 stars. It was way too loud to hear each other speak across the table. The space is very small, so everytime the waiter came to either table next to me, their elbows would be in my face. They never once said excuse me or tried to accommodate the tables to make more room to squeeze in or at least give a heads up that they were coming through. The chairs opposite of the wall sit really low and since there's no room for the waiter to stand next to the table, you're forced to break your neck and look up at them at a weird angle. The food wasn't bad but wasn't great. Fries were nothing to write home about. The cod was fishy. The corn was soggy. The roasted chicken was bland, skin wasn't very crispy and for over $50, it comes with no carbs and isn't even a whole chicken. The best thing we had was the fennel and sage appetizer. The rest was forgettable. I'd give it 3 stars if it wasn't for how unreasonably expensive it is relative to other great restaurants in the city. Knowing the amount we spent, I would not be able to justify coming again. If you're looking for a great piece of protein with some filling sides in the west village you don't have to go very far - Anton's, Minetta Tavern, Lavagna, Frank's (the rosemary chicken), Virginia's are all significantly better and more reasonably priced. read more

My reason for giving four stars is I think some changes need to be made in order for this restaurant to make it. The food was good, the service was great, but the prices missed the mark ($50+ for an entree is not market for this echelon of restaurant nor is a $22 cocktail) and the vibe is also confusing. It's too loud and the tables are too packed to make this a romantic dinner spot and it's far too loud to go with a group (I'm not sure how you'd hear anyone, and I'm 31 years old). Dinner for two, without dessert and with one glass of wine each was over $220 (before tip). What I was hoping would be a lovely neighborhood joint is priced as an upper east side destination. Service is attentive and kind; the music is kept low; and the food can be inventive, though portions are small.
