A friend and I went for dinner last night and were happy to get a table after a lot of wandering. And we got it much faster than the initial 30 minutes the hostess had said. Beautifully-laid out space and quite festive. Love the brick walls, that it was busy but not noisy and that the tables are well separated from each other. Also, our waitress was great. We started with the pear and percorino salad. Very flavourful with different textures. Maybe could have been mixed a little better. We couldn't get the garlic bread unfortunately (supply chain issues). Instead we got the hearty bread and butter- delicious and a decent portion for two. Definitely could have eaten more of it. My friend had the beef and ricotta meatballs and was somewhat underwhelmed. She also thought $24 was a lot for just meatballs. I had the Ribollita, a hearty vegetarian soup with tuscan beans and sourdough croutons. Nice and savoury. I'm giving it four stars because the menu is pretty small and the prices are quite steep. Main: Local Tilefish The tilefish left me scratching my head. It's like going to a concert and not hearing the headliner. The veggie sidekicks were the real rockstars here. A decent 6/10 that was average. Grass-Fed Beef and Ricotta Meatballs These meatballs hit the Goldilocks zone - not too juicy, not too dry. But here's the twist, the portion size left us pondering, "Are we eating too much, or are these meatballs just tiny?" Small menu of food items to nosh on. A small selection of NY based beers, ciders, wines to choose from. Large family style picnic tables with shade umbrellas to relax at. The cod was mellow, with kale and chic peas. The flavor with the delicate fish was exceptional. My friend ordered the pizzocheri with mushrooms and thyme. So delicious! We had a fantastic brunch at Hearth on a beautiful Father's Day Sunday. This cool little restaurant in the East Village serves some outstanding food in a great setting. We ate outdoors and just enjoyed the vibe! We started out with some delicious cocktails. My son and I went with the Bloody Brodo, which is made with beef broth...different but very good! For an appetizer, we all shared the ricotta toast which was just amazing! For a brunch entree, I went with the sausage and kale ragu. This was so tasty under two fried eggs. I really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately it just didn't do much for me. Came here as a group of 6 for a friend's bday. We shared the garlic bread, chickpea-flour pancakes, anchovies and boquerones, and chicken liver pâté toast. Everything was alright, but I found the chicken liver pâté to be the most disappointing as it tasted a bit bitter with the liver taste not masked/disguised at all, but I guess that's consistent with their healthy and natural concept for food? It also didn't really pair well with the strawberries even though they looked photogenic together. Regardless, I expected a bit more from a gourmet restaurant like this to at least attempt at elevating a dish like pâté, otherwise it'd just be the definition of "overpriced." Their partially enclosed outdoor space was warmed by space heaters, but felt just a little too cozy; there were only two tables in the area we were seated, and because of the partial enclosure and lack of music outdoors, we could hear the other patron's conversations clear as a bell. In turn, we kept our voices down the whole time so as not to bother them. This is, of course, not the fault of the restaurant; but just note that if you're looking for a lively brunch spot to hit up with more than 2 people during COVID, Hearth is probably not it to for you. Food and drinks were great! Their brunch menu does not include your standard eggs and pancake dishes; the menu is largely Italian-themed. We started with warm sourdough bread ($7), which was chewy on the outside but soft on the inside, and great with the butter. For my entree, I had the meatballs ($23), which were tasty, but absurdly priced for 2 meatballs. My friend had the ribollita with poached eggs ($17), which she enjoyed. Such a lovely, beautiful, well-appointed restaurant in the East Village. While visiting my in-laws in New York, they took us to their favorite restaurant in the city, Hearth. We had previously visited Hearth on the High Line in 2022 during the summer, but had never been to the brick and mortar original location. We were delighted by Eric at the bar, as he took our preferences for cocktails to heart and created some delicious drinks for each of us. Mine was a twist on a white Negroni, and it was incredible. For dinner, we tried a bit of everything. The sourdough and butter is an amazing starter, as is the chicken liver pate and anchovies. We enjoyed all starters thoroughly! For dinner, my husband and I split the maccheroni with pork and rosemary, the quail and farro, and the roasted autumn squash with hazelnuts. Everything was amazing, but I really loved the pasta - how could you not? We also split some duck fat potatoes (the side for the variety burger, which we did not order, but I want to try someday), as well as the smoked mackerel, and all items were incredibly yummy. Dinner was paired with a lovely chilled red wine, which was a recommendation based on our collective orders. Lovely brunch place. It was a 26F day so it is cold, but the seating area is quite comfy (although the heat lamps could be stronger). The hot cocktails are served very hot and are very enjoyable in such a cold day. The food are great too - we got the maccheroni that has a rich taste and perfect pasta texture. My worst nightmare came true last night - I read hundreds of reviews on Yelp to find the perfect place for dinner for my sister's birthday.... and failed miserably. There goes my loved one's trust in me as a Yelp Elite. Despite all the glowing reviews for Hearth (which I choose to believe over the subpar ones, idk why), nobody was impressed with dinner here and everyone (sister included) ranked this restaurant a 3 or lower. I think for the price, this restaurant is a pass. SETTING: dinner for my sisters birthday at 8:00pm on a Wednesday night for four people. The restaurant is big, with dim lighting and completely full on a Wednesday. It was noisy but not overly so and busy. FOOD: we ordered the potato gnocchi with sage, butter and parm, the garlic bread, the Japanese sweet potato with labneh and chili vinegar, the beef and ricotta meatballs, and the whole grain maccheroni with pork ragu and ricotta. The gnocchi was not good. It was completely undercooked or basically melted in your mouth. There was no texture at all and it was essentially just mashed potatoes that disintegrated in your mouth at first bite. Very confusing. Everything else was OK- the sweet potatoes were good (the vinegar cuts right through and the potato almost tastes light and airy) as was the maccheroni (this was really flavorful and delicious but heavy), but overall the meal was lacking. We all walked away hungry, but didn't want to order anything else / see anything else on the menu we wanted. VERDICT: if you're in the area, Hearth is not a bad place for dinner. But I don't think the food here is a 4/5 star restaurant- it's your average slightly overpriced new American cuisine that you can get for cheaper (and maybe better) elsewhere. read more

This place came highly recommended, but unfortunately I was very underwhelmed. I really liked their aesthetic- the way that none of their plates, glasses, etc match give me a really homey vibe- it's like you went to a relative's house for dinner. Moving to the food, the menu is pretty eclectic, so I had high hopes. Unfortunately, this place seems to have trouble with portion sizes. We ordered a couple of "smaller plates" and then each ordered an entrée from the "heartier fare". The garlic bread that came out was almost a whole loaf, a vastly larger portion than some of the other entrees that came out. Honestly, the cecina was the best thing I ate all night, though it was fairly dry. The chicken was decent, but they should be embarrassed by their meatballs. $24 for three average sized meatballs and they call that an entrée?! Put that dish under the appetizers where it belongs, even if you're going to keep the egregious price tag at least let people know what to expect. read more

We arrived early on a weekend night, and it wasn't busy, yet they seemed to rush us through the order, forcing us to order everything at once. We explicitly said we didnt' want it all served at once (who would?), yet they brought it all out together. So the flies and gnats were attacking the food that was sitting there waiting for us to finish the first course. And after taking forever to take our order, they came out 1 minute after the food was delivered to ask 'how is everything?,' yet we only had one bite at that point! Then we finished our lukewarm wine and were ready to just order another glass of something else, a red that didn't need to be chilled...but she never came back again until the bill. Then to add insult to injury, we tried to share feedback about one of the tables that we happened to notice was about to collapse. The host inside didn't even make eye contact as we told them, and then mumbled after they walked away, 'I'll take care of it later.' And that was it! We tipped well, didn't take home any leftovers, didn't ask for anything unusual, yet we were treated as though we were inconveniencing them. Perhaps we were. As a result, our waiter spilled some on my girlfriend's leather heels as he was bringing it to our table. We were also seated in the annex (rear) of the restaurant by the kitchen, which was a narrow space (7-8 feet wide) that became very loud as sounds from the table of 8 behind us echoed quite loudly. All in all, it felt like a lot of small things were off in terms of the overall experience, which is frankly unacceptable for the price range hearth is charging. I was really excited about this place but it didn't meet my expectations. So this was lunch on a weekend. The service was slow, our food didn't come out for a long time. The food was just meh nothing wow...I had the poached eggs with polenta and it tasted like polenta and poached egg with salt and pepper. That's it, nothing special. Portions were small. So here we are, at another lower Manhattan restaurant. I have been to several businesses and have sampled much, but This little old restaurant in lower Manhattan, is a joy. It is not super expensive and the menu doesn't boast the artistry of the Louvre in France. It's just good, basic food... Well, maybe a little more than 'basic'. This place had been buzzed about for its rich Tuscan-inspired menu since 2003, but chef Marco Canora had a health scare a few years back that encouraged him to create dishes that were lighter and more nutritious, starting with the introduction of his popular beef broth chain, Brodo (review: http://bit.ly/2DSf8Ld). I didn't know about the Brodo connection when my friend Carlos and I dined here on a frigid Sunday evening, but I was pleased since I can't live on Katz's pastrami and Nathan's hot dogs. Can I? There was a warm ambiance the moment we walked in, though the tables were crowded a bit too closely together. The food was delicious and super clean (no crappy oil used, the meat is 100% grass fed) and so it felt great both going down and after the meal. I wish they had more options like lamb or seafood options. I'm a fan of the menu but my girlfriend doesn't eat pork/beef or fish like mackerel so she didn't enjoy her meal. We ate here during restaurant week and made our choices based on the restaurant week menu. Well lets just say that the portion sizes were cut short like reallly small plates. One item i ordered was the meatball with polenta as the main and i received two meatballs in a tiny tiny smear of polenta. Now polenta is probably one of the cheapest foods to buy/make why throw in .10 cents worth of polenta smear on the plate?!? The deserts were very forgetfull and amateur. I read a previous review also complaining on the meatball portion size and the order was from the full menu so if that was small i kid you not this was a spoon of polenta smeared on a tiny plate with two meatballs on top. The overall bill was very high for the food that we received. Too bad i think restaurant week should be an opportunity for restaurants to get new customers but in this case i definetly wont be returning. The only think i liked was the ambience and the dark dining room. Service was also not excellent items were forgotten and also the staff were dressed to hipsterish and that didnt go well with the classic decor. I ended up rediscovering this restaurant on my list and am SO GLAD I was able to stop in to try some of their dishes. Since this is pandemic-times, I'll start with the outdoor seating. It's great! It's sectioned off like a patio with enough coverage to keep you warm. They also had a heater that I opted not to use, as it was a hot day. Ok, now the good stuff- The server advised to start with the bread and seasonings on it. (I can't remember the specific name, but I included pictures.) Holy moly this was DELISH. It was warm and perfectly seasoned. I needed to stop myself from eating the whole thing so I could save room for the main! The main I went for was the whole grain maccheroni- it felt like I was eating mom's cooking. Very comforting, filling and with the perfect amount of whipped ricotta to lighten it. Lastly, I sprang for the dark chocolate budno as a treat. This was very rich and good, but not really my style. I think I want to try their cookies next time. This place really sucks. My wife and I have lived in NYC for 10 years and we agreed this was the worst "nice" dinner either of us have had in the city. The $72 steak was borderline inedible, fatty with some parts raw and others well done. I thought about taking some home for our dog but I love him so decided not to. Everything else we got was also extremely sub par. The potatoes with the $72 steak you can buy frozen for $2.99 at Trader Joe's. Service was pretty MIA. Drinks were fine. read more
