Heartwork Coffee Bar on Goldfinch Dr in Mission Hills is NOT a bar, it's actually a stand. Where you order at the counter, pay and pick up your coffee drink. Over ten years ago, the space was larger and had indoor seating. Now only a couple of tables and a bench. Sometimes this place is packed and there's no seating, standing room only. Parking is a challenge. While waiting for my friend's doctor appointment at nearby Scripps Mercy, this coffee place caught my attention. Interestingly, my friend's medical appointments are all 'heartwork' related and meanwhile my coffee drinks are from 'Heartwork,' ...this is an overdue review, as I have been coming here for over a year and order togo my usual favs: iced strawberry matcha, chocolates mocha or iced honey cinnamon lattes, which are ALL fantastic. The staff are always nice and friendly. If you stay a while, you'll taste the difference is this coffee and find it to be heartwarming... :) Recommend

My friend recommended Heartwork. We decided to stop by here for some coffee on the way to the zoo. The place is super cute and you order from the window off the street. There's a variety of different types of artwork on the building that were pretty cool. For drinks, we got a honey cinnamon almond milk latte and an iced americano. Both were tasty. Park a few streets down off the main road.

This place was so fun!! The cutie lady who took our order wasn't bothered by my friend and i's never ending questions! My extra sweet iced chai was wonderful and my friend had the dill pickle scone ?? crazy (sadly no pic) but she loved it

Great staff and the coffee drinks are superb. I had an English Breakfast cold tea and for $4.25 a half glass of ice and 8oz, tops, of tea is highway robbery. Love them but not that price for what is about 39 cents of product. Just no value at all.

Iced The Dandy aka Lavender Honey Latte, 16 oz, $5.75

Came here late afternoon on Sunday. I was shocked at the new look of it. Last time I came was September 14th, 2019 with my dad. From my assumption, because of the 2 coffee roasters machines inside there was no more room for indoor seating. The door to get in...is for employees only, but they utilize it as the menu (nicely written). The prices are pretty good! You now walk up to the window to order. I do like that you can see into the space (seeing them make the drinks). They have a few tables for outdoor seating and some benches as well. Or you can take your coffee for a walk around the neighborhood. The workers are really kind! Last time, I got the Clark Griswold (I have no clue WHO that is) but this drink is flavored with Nutmeg + Nutella. At the time, I remembered it being a bit too strong (as in I'd prefer it sweeter) for me...but the flavors were good. I noticed that they have a veganized version of it on the menu as well! This time I went with an Iced 16 oz "The Dandy" which is Lavender + Honey Latte. This had a great honey flavor, but fell flat with the lavender (not prominent). 4/5. The price was really good though as it was $5.75! Would come back here again. Next time, I'd like to try a latte with their housemade vanilla syrup.

Cute coffee shop in Mission Hills! They are a small coffee stall with 3 outdoor tables so they're great if you're on the go or need a quick pick me up. Besides coffee, they also have matcha and lemonade!

Loved the vibe and a killer curtado! This is a new fav as I just moved downtown and will make this mission hills joint a regular stop.

This is a decent coffee window in the area, but I got a cappucino and it tasted super burnt, and took a really long time. There's a few chairs on the sidewalk but it's a bit of a busy street and not the most comfortable. I appreciated the mural though!

The Dandy, Strawberry Matcha, and Clark Griswold

Metered street parking here is a bit hit or miss. 7-10 minutes is enough time to get in and out usually depending on if there is a long line. Staff are friendly, awesome, and fast. They have some outdoor seating. I usually get the Dandy and the Clark Griswold. Got a Strawberry Matcha on my most recent visit. All of their drinks have been great in the years I visited here

Cute little coffe stand with great drinks! I got The Dandy (lavender honey latte) and my husband got the Goldfinch Fog. Both were delicious and reasonably priced!

Great little coffee spot in Mission Hills. Very nice service. Coffee hit the spot just right. There are a few chairs outside if you want to sit down and take it easy for a couple of minutes.

Best coffee I've had in SD so far. Loved the lavender iced coffee. As someone who enjoys coffee and is picky this is very good very authentic.

I've been going to Heartwork since they opened in 2015. I lived in Mission Hills for years and remember when their shop used to be a closed down jewelry store. I remember watching the space slowly transform into a new business, and soon I realized it was going to be a coffee shop - what excellent good fortune to have an amazing craft coffee shop just a 5 min bike ride from my house! Once they opened, I started frequenting and fell in love with their incredible espresso. Their cappuccinos have a story to tell. They also have pastries available all the time which are local and delicious. During Covid, they restructured their business model and brought their roasting from a different location into their shop in Mission Hills. This changed the layout of their store and caused all seating to become outdoor seating. They now roast and create their coffee all in that sweet little space and guests are welcome to sit outside. I always seem to see the owner Sam when I'm in. He's so kind and always has a suggestion or something nice to say. He provides great service. It's so neat to see an owner be so hands on in the day to day operations My heart is with Heartwork. They are simply the best! Go check them out and support what is easily one of the best coffee shops in San Diego.

Chicken katsu sando 5/5: my favorite. I love the spicy mustardy sauce not sure if it's in the actual brown katsu sauce or separate mustard. My bf didnt like it but i loved it! Food/drinks 3/5: We got a strawberry matcha, truffle fries, the egg sando, and chicken katsu sando. The matcha was unfortunately super watery and you could barely taste any matcha. As a truffle lover, I was super excited for the fries, but both my friend and I agreed that we couldn't taste any truffle. The sandwiches although did save this meal. I did enjoy the egg one much more as the katsu one had a strong vinegary sauce that was overpowering the whole sando. Service/Ambiance 4/5: There was plenty of seating and the workers were nice. We were really hoping to try the shrimp sando but they were out. Don't think I will be coming back to try it though.

Based on other comments and the AI summaries I saw on Yelp and Google, it was recommended that I order ahead which is exactly what I did and it was a fairly easy and a quick system. It looks like their weekly menu keeps changing which is a both a good thing and a bad thing because you get to try new things but may not always get to eat your favorites again. I pre-ordered on a Thursday for a pick up on Friday and they were already out of their seasonal Black Forest Bun which sounded delicious. After scrolling through the menu multiple times, I decided to get the Pistachio Strawberry croissant and the Kouign Amann. When I arrived at the store, I immediately noticed the pre-order pick up window and was so glad that I wasn't standing in what seems to be on atleast a 25-30 line which I though was crazy for a weekday morning. The staff that gave my order was so friendly and it was so quick. What's great is they hold your order for atleast 24 hours in case you're unable to pick it up. There is some seating in the patio but honestly it's not meant for sitting and enjoying the pastries because there aren't really any tables but only seating. So it's best to pick up and take it home or eat by the beach which is what I did. The place is cute with a lot of plants and good vibes though. Since they don't warm up the croissants , I was worried that it wouldn't taste good while eating it at the beach but I was absolutely wrong. The Kouign Amann was okay, I'd give it a 4/5. The Pistachio Strawberry croissant however, was so absolutely delicious I'd give it a 5/5 even though it wasn't warmed up, it had the perfect amount of sweetness. It's easily one of the best croissants I've ever had. Overall this place has absolutely delicious pastries, but I'm not sure if I'd stand in a 30 mins line, maybe 10-15 mins, so good for them to have the pre order system.

Turns out it was just as whimsical and quaint as the name of the bakery would make it seem, from the pet freindly atmosphere to the passion fruits hanging from the overhead trestle! As a tip, order ahead for pickup! Wayfarer opens its doors at 8 am, with online pickups avaliable as early as 9 - 9:15am. We walked right up, passed the already growing line, and enjoyed our breakfast. Truly the only way to skip waiting in line; going early won't cut it! We got three different croissants, as well as a baguette. Can't go wrong with the original, but the standout (to me) was the almond, with a crunchy top and stuffed with almond filling (think marzipan!). Perfectly balanced, and the almond, nor the sweetness, was not too overpowering. The Kouign-Amann had a crunchy, sugary shell. Almost like a creme brulee topping on a croissant. Sticky, but so delicious. Also shoutout to the baguette! One of the best I've had. Next time I'll have to bring some fruit, cheese, and honey. Wayfarer's vibes transported me to a community garden in Santa Cruz, and the tastes and techniques to Europe. Good thing it's inconvenient to get here from UC San Diego or else I'd be here much more often.

This is just below the price for an Extraordinary Desserts cake slice, which is not only bigger and more complex, but also made fresh. We noticed the crepe cake slice we got had that dusting of ice sparkles, indicating it was frozen and defrosting, and additionally, as it defrosted, the more it started leaning. Lines are always better with a friend and even though we all arrived before opening there was still a healthy line. I was really excited, to finally get to check them out, I saw on their socials that a new chef had taken residency and that they came with some Filipino flair. As a fellow Filipino I definitely wanted to support. I ended up ordering a lumpia roll, ube butter ensaymada, a halo halo tart and a egg sando sandwich along with an iced matcha with honey, with tip my total was $48, which isn't horrible considering these are meant to be higher quality pastries. My girlfriends and I found a table and decided we would share, I shared my egg sando sandwich and the lumpia roll, while they shared their ube butter ensaymada and the turon kouign amann. My matcha, was a horrible, it was a muddy green and really lacked any matcha flavor, my friend didn't like her matcha either and she had the miso caramel matcha. I didn't even finish my matcha and I can really take one down. We joked about how we should have opted for the orange juice instead. Now for the pastries, I was really underwhelmed by them, the ensaymada was just fine, I honestly cannot remember the taste of it, it lacked something. The egg sando sandwich, the filling was plentiful and flavorful BUT the bread was dry, was that potato bread? The texture was off for me and I ended up just scooping out the filling and eating it like that. Where the sando had a good amount of filling the lumpia roll lacked it, it was so sparse I figured it would be more like a sausage roll so I was taken aback by how little there was in it. Flavors were fine, the pastry was buttery but I just wanted a little more. The one pastry we agreed was better than the rest was the turon kouign amann, the crunchy bits of sugar was so reminiscent of turon but the filling, for me was like uncooked banana bread batter, that threw me off entirely. It was better, but not the filling. So overall, I would say it was okay, I guess for the costs it just didn't meet my expectations.

The middle section had pistachio frangipane (or it looked like it) with coarsely chopped pistachios that brought another layer of crunch! Then to top it all off, it had pistachio cream on top of the cookie! I only wish I got another one. CAPPUCCINO It was okay. But love the foam! It was frothy and foamy! PAVLOVA The meringue was a bit too hard and too sweet and the pastry cream was overwhipped. Loved the fresh fig and blueberries though. I was looking forward to eating pavlova and this was very disappointing! KOUIGN AMANN Very buttery and sticky! Crispy on the outside. Every bite was not dry, but chewy. There was this sticky and chewy texture that wasn't unpleasant, yet it wasn't fully flaky like a croissant. But glad it was not dry! The kouign amann was not as tall like others I've tried, but I preferred it this way because it was not dry. The last kouign amann I had from Bread Lounge was dryyyy. But bought mine at a coffee shop too. PAIN AU CHOCOLAT Crispy on the outside, but I must have toasted a bit more, so the outside was a bit more toasted than desired. Inside was good. Good dark chocolate. BUTTER CROISSANT Really buttery, flaky, crispy! Ate it next day, so reheated it in the toaster oven to bring a more crispness all around. Really enjoyed this! Adding butter and jam is so good! LEMON MERINGUE Meringue had a strong eggy smell and flavor, the lemon was tangy, but not enough to rid of the eggy smell and flavor. The tart was hard and almost stale. I took a few bites and threw the rest out. PAIN SUISSE Chocolate flavor. Crispy on the outside, fluffy like a light spongy cake inside. Enjoyed this! CUSTOMER SERVICE Got there early afternoon. There was only one person in front of me. Good service overall. Quick service. Hits and misses of the various pastries I've tried. So while it tastes really nice, I was let down by the uneven raspberry taste and since it wasn't enough, the cake turned out to be too sweet when I got to the second half.
