Heathrow Airport is gigantic and kind of a mess. Our latest experience in Terminal 3 wasn't terrible, but definitely would not put this on my favorite airports list. Pros: -Timeslot. Heathrow is testing out a new timeslot program that allows you to pre-reserve your spot in the security line. Note, this is currently just applicable for a few airlines. We utilized this and it saved us a significant amount of time! -Traveling to the airport via tube is so easy! We hoped on the Piccadilly line and had a straight shot to and from the airport and London's city center. Cons: - The airport structures the terminal like a giant bullpen. You wait in a large area with shops and restaurants and only find out what gate you are departing from when it's time to board. It feels like herding cattle. The area is so congested (as are the people) and it wasn't a great experience. On top of that, the restaurant options were fine, but not great. - We were notified of our gate 15 minutes before boarding and made the long journey over. It's really a strange arrangement and the waiting area at the gate was so much more peaceful. I wish we'd gotten assigned earlier to get to wait there in peace. - If you're a priority pass member, know that you will have to prebook to access the lounge. The lounges fill up quickly, but it would definitely be worth it given how horrible waiting in the pen is. - There's one main restroom area in the terminal. It gets super crowded! Overall, this airport is built for the masses. While in many airports, you have the ability to sneak away to find a quiet spot if you look hard enough, you won't find that here. read more

Worst airport known to man. You have to walk at least two miles from the plane to baggage claims and UK Border verification is h*ll! The line is sooo long that you'll be standing g for at least 30-45 minutes. Yes, you read that right. There's no air conditioning and you'll be in the airport building for at least an hour before you're able to exit. Never again! I'll travel to another country nearby because the conditions of this airport are unacceptable. read more

seems that writing a review on airport is never easy because your experience can be hit or miss based on all the issues airlines are going through in their industry. Heathrow London airport is huge and very efficient as there are volumes of people from all over being processed like a well oiled machine. Facilities are clean and modern with state of the art technology from immigration processing to luggage retrieval. There are all kinds of shops and airline lounges that these days can make spending delay a little less aggravating. Only two negatives where when flying into Heathrow from Miami on an international connection arrived in terminal three, had to go through immigration, collect luggage and then take tube, bus or taxi to terminal five that was very stressful when on a rush. Second incident was while we were boarding flights with first class tickets airline or airport staff made no attempt to control boarding as everyone just rushed to board flight.. Other than those two incidents had a good trip, felt safe and comfortable during whole process. read more

This is such a pleasant airport to travel through. We were here only about two hours before a connecting flight. This airport is very clean and efficient. I loved popping into the very nice fragrance store to freshen up after a long flight. They also have some really nice clothing stores, but I didn't have much time to look. I saw they have lots of nice choices for restaurants. There are many types of food to choose from. I bought some authentic British tea to bring home. I forgot the name of the store at this point. All in all, they have a lot of nice stores and restaurants here. Not a bad airport to have a delay in. read more

As with any airport, be sure you arrive early if you're not familiar with it. There are plenty of signs to locate your gates. The central area has tons of shopping from both high and into touristy souvenirs there are places to eat and several airlines have club lounges. Once you make your way towards your gate, there is nothing so be sure you eat and shop early and then make your way toward your gate about 30 to 45 minutes before boarding. read more

Wow It was so hot inside that airport and so crowded it was crazy. It took forever to get the bags, almost 2 hours not sure why that took so long. There seem to be lots of confusion and not much help. But utterly different experience leaving this airport i was like, was this the same one I just arrived at? Lol. And then boom, SECURITY CHECK POINT. I arrived on time because of the zigzag and long line, not to mention the process. Give yourself time because that's a show. After that, pretty smooth to the gate, lots of walking, and then you come upon all of the goods and shopping that cost the same as it would if you repurchased it at home. But you get all of the luxury right next to the food so if you're tempted to shop while you eat it's there in your face . read more

IF you have a connecting British Airways flight in the SAME Terminal (5) as your arrival flight, you WILL need to go through security AGAIN. If you have a small bottle of water, either dump or chug it. If you had put any liquid items in your purse, they will need to go back inside your liquids bag again... No need to remove your shoes. Security seems to be looking for anything to harass you about, including that my pant legs had ridden slightly up my calves! What?! Security pointed to my pants and inquired IF they were intentionally rolled up. I was pulled aside and patted down and my hands swabbed. We had a very tight one hour connection in the SAME Terminal, luckily we made it. There is a short tram ride, security queue, tons of endless escalators, and confusing signage. There was just enough time for a quick stop to the toilet because our connecting flight was delayed. IF you have a connecting BA flight to a different Terminal (5) than your arrival flight, be prepared to be shuttled via bus to Terminal 3 to the waiting area until your Gate is posted on the Flight Boards. T3 has a very nice selection of eateries and Duty Free shopping. The shopping is all high end designer stuff like a posh department store. What's odd is that we were loaded on a bus from T3 and taken right back to T5 to catch our flight. It was like a tour of the Heathrow Airport. LoL! Allot at least 2-3+ hours for connecting flights in different terminals. FREE airport WiFi. Some of the BA airport reps were rude and snippy. TIP: Text your flight number to yourself (or to someone) - you will see the "preview flight" information AND the departure GATE number & Terminal assigned to your flight before it's posted on the flight information board. The ONLY positive was the Pret-A-Manger in T3. I love their salads and sandwiches! read more

For such an enormous airport, you'd think they would have figured out an effective way for the masses to get through security, but no. Is this a strategy to get people to come early, line up for queues and with all the excess time...unconsciously get ppl to browse the shops? That's my theory lol The ridiculous long lines and inefficiency makes no sense. So whatever time you think you want to get to the airport, plan 2-3hrs ahead. They're also unfair when it comes to liquids, they threw out a lot of my solid cosmetics like mascara and a travel size contact lens solution. What type of evil can anybody do with a tube of mascara? It's as drier than oatmeal for crying out loud. Be reasonable. I think the agents just wanted to be difficult, so there's that lesson. read more

Their security has mixed policies, very inconsistent. I went through with duck tape in my luggage. They detected it, checked and verified to see what it is then let me through. The following week I went through again, same thing. They detected it, checked and verified it was duck tape, but this time it was confiscated. The guy said it wasn't allowed. read more

It's a massive airport with International flights, UK flights, and even an Express train that will get you to the heart of London fast! And did I mention the Loo?! I love Heathrow for all the priorities you want in an airport. It's clean (for the most part), lots of "Loos" (piss stations), endless Cafes & Restaurants, Gift Shops galore. I'd avoid the "UK" specialty shop on the 2nd floor tho, the others were fun to browse. There's a mini-Harrods (one at Gatwick too) which is my fav to go gallivanting. Also, my favorite Pret is here! Large one with a ton of food choices, drinks, and even Godfrey biscuits! Lovely cutie rung me up - like a RL Hermione Granger with Brit accent n'all! London Heathrow is the major hub for British Airways and so happens that's my favorite carrier. So I guess that's a big part of the why too! Things are just so organized here. Oh did I mention (like maybe a dozen times before) that I met, sat by, and took photos (her backside lol) of Rebel Wilson here? We were both flying from London to L.A. and she was super nice to me, even chatted a few, then I realized it was theeee "Rebel Wilson" when the British Airways agent paged her... I was like "Reb..." London Heathrow is pretty much my least favorite airport. It s massive and the bus transfers from one terminal to the other are hectic and unsafely overcrowded. Their security line is ridiculous. It's inefficient and they literally make you pull out everything from your bag if you're selected for secondary screening, which I was, twice! I know this airport well and always pack my liquids according to their regulations. This Time the milk cartons and apple sauce pouches for my daughter must have set them off. Make sure you are well read on their liquids policy. I didn't have to thrown anything out but they made me out to be some sort of criminal by pulling me over twice. read more

This is not a replica of my previous review. Rather, this review applies to Heathrow Airport in general. I flew into this airport while I was on my way back to my clinical rotation site, after having spent a nice holiday in Rome. Manchester treated me well, so I figured Heathrow would as well. And you know what? I was spot on. After disembarking from my previous flight, I walked about 300 meters toward UK immigration. I noticed that they have two lines: a line for citizens of the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and a handful of other nations, while the other line was everyone else. Me, being a US citizen, took the former. This led me to a booth that scanned my passport and took a photo of me. After less than 10 seconds, I was allowed to pass without having to talk to anyone. THIS is efficiency at its finest! Once I was through, I proceeded to security, which took less than 2 minutes. Afterward, I took a nice walk around the airport, which had a bunch of stores. Some stores represented some fine brands sold back home, but most were closed at the time. I'm assuming this was because of the Easter holiday. I navigated my way toward my gate, which entailed quite a bit of walking, and a short train ride. This was no issue, as I had an 8 hour flight ahead of me, so the exercise was much appreciated. This airport is clean, and has plenty of food and shopping options. I'm not one to shop at airports unless absolutely necessary, but it's great if you need something on the fly (pun intended). London does a phenomenal job maintaining its airport. I hope LAX one day grows to be as efficient as Heathrow. Cheers! read more

Before my trip I saw news stories, and videos of travelers around Europe dealing with airport madness and massive crowds. So I was definitely on edge before my flight. But overall we had a decent experience upon arrival and departure. It took about 30 minutes to get through customs upon arrival. And a little over an hour to get through security for departure. The staff was helpful when we had questions. And I found the airport to be organized and clean. The one downfall was the piles of unsorted/unclaimed luggage in the baggage area. It's a disaster. Hopefully they're able to sort that out. read more

It's admittingly been almost 20 years since I've gone through Heathrow and definitely the first since Iv'e come of age. I'm guessing my last time physically in Heathrow was perhaps during a layover, but I don't remember the exact flight that was. Anyhow, that layover was brutal because we walked forever just to get to another round of security, only to find out we returned to the exact same place. The one thing that defines Heathrow is its brutally long walks. Be prepared to walk between 5-10 mins just to get through passport control. Lot of time spent on the moving escalator. The funny part is that the passport control was absolutely empty. I think that's the byproduct of an early AM arrival and because US citizens are included in fast pass so all you need to do is scan your passport and take a photo. Takes minutes. Unlike our US counterparts, we not only arrived early, but we even got off the plane early. This resulted in me getting my bag FAST. It was so fast that I ended up getting on the tube to London around the time I was supposed to land in the first place. Fortunately, you can easily access the tube if you're willing to also walk forever in the underground tunnels. PSA: Don't buy Heathrow Express. It's a joke and the Elizabeth Line is much better to take. Unless you REALLY need to be in Paddington in 15 mins, just relax on the Elizabeth Line to get to Central London. Heathrow is a mess! It's one thing to travel in and out of this airport if it is your single departure or arrival point (in fact I quite like it for that) but otherwise it's a nightmare. I had a connection through Heathrow to Venice. Our flight got in but they couldn't let us off the plane because the busses to take us to the terminal were late. Once we did get on the bus and get to the terminal, I had to switch from terminal 3 to terminal 5. This meant having to get back on a bus which slowly meandered to terminal 5. I thought to myself are we going to a different terminal or a different city? Despite not having left the airport there was the ordeal of having to go through security again, by which point I missed my connection. It really should not take more than two hours to transit through an airport (in fact I had 2.5 hours); but I'd say you need at least 3, and to be safe, even 4 hours! It's really quite ridiculous at how far standards at Heathrow have dropped. I would not use this as a connection hub again - I've had better experiences with Amsterdam and dare I say it, even Paris. read more

Heathrow Airport is a functional airport and once you're past security it offers a lot of shops and food to enjoy. But if you have to come early and wait, there is nowhere to sit. Everyone at the airport was very friendly and helpful, they have this figured out. They move a lot of people through here, so they know what they're doing. The tsa agent asked me to open a sealed duty free bag? I'm confused. Got stuck for fifteen minutes because we were trying to explain to him that it's in a it's free bag and we got it at the airport. But he didn't understand and we just missed our flight. We went back to the united airlines help desk and we were stuck for about 2-3 hours because for some reason they were hesitant to first, give a hotel to stay at for the mean time and second, explain that they couldn't book us another flight. She was very rude and was also dismissive of not just us but other people as well. Do better, hire people who actually want to do their job. read more

This airport is probably the biggest of all the airports in London. It's located in West London, about 1.5 hr drive to Central London with moderate traffic. It's about a 45 min train ride (cost of the train depends on if you're riding during peak hours). I flew out of Terminal 3 which house all the luxury brand store such as: Chanel, Jo Malone, Hermes, LV, Dior, Paul Smith, Gucci and Fendi. There are several restaurants, food markets and lounges located at the terminal. Most of the lounges are invite ONLY, however, there are 2 lounges that you can access by paying a fee. The fee is determined by the # of hours you will be at the lounge. Airport seating is in a central location near the shops and restaurants. When it's time to board the plane is when you walk to the gate. read more

It's a good thing that they do a thorough check of people's belongings, but the process is very slow. I was only in the airport for a few hours before leaving for Naples. So busy! Prices aren't inflated at bars & restaurants like you'd expect. I had hours to spare here, so I checked out menus at various places before deciding where to eat. The shopping is mostly upscale, with a number of high end retailers such as Gucci and Rolex. The duty free shops have plenty of reasonably priced goods. I had a meal and cocktail at Giraffes with the dining credit I received from British Airways when I missed my connecting flight from Duesseldorf. I also had an appetizer and a beer at another restaurant whose name escapes me. This place has ordering at the table, which sounds great unless your phone is dying. I was able to order at the bar though, so crisis averted! They have a great beer menu too. The highlight of my Heathrow experience was probably the popup PATRON BAR serving free samples! I had 2 tasty samples that provided a bit of bliss in my eventual almost 9 hour wait to escape rainy Heathrow and return to sunny Vegas! I traveled from the busy main gate area to the less crazy C & D gates, where I eventually left from. You can either hoof it to the C & D gates, which is a nice walk if you want some exercise, or take the tram. There's a not busy Starbucks here, which I should have found earlier, but my gate wasn't available when I arrived at Heathrow. The agent who assisted me with rebooking my Vegas flight was very good and helped calm me down from a near panic after I missed my connection for my original Vegas flight. A 9 hour time difference is a lot when you have a layover in Houston before getting to Vegas! I was booked on a direct flight home, which was a relief. read more

Arrivals: Quick. They have automated machines through immigration. Makes the process faster. I didn't have check in luggage, so I don't know how that process went. They have good signage. I was able to find the tube easily. There are different ways to get from Heathrow to the city. You can use the subway (tube), Heathrow express, taxi, ground transport. Heathrow express is faster, but definitely pricier Departures: I took the tube back. It took about an hour. Once I arrived, I went straight to security. They do make you put all your liquids in a plastic bag before you go through security. Be prepared. Security was fast. The gates are easy to find. There's plenty of seating. I didn't see any charging outlets by the seats. They have plenty of retail shops and coffee shops. The airport is big, but you can get to where you need to be easily. It is clean. We have traveled all over Europe and almost everywhere in the U.S. We have been to over 60 countries in the last seven years. Heathrow is easily the worst airport we have ever been to. Chances are you will deplane out on the tarmac and have a sardine like packed bus take you to terminal. Then you sit in this huge cattle pen waiting for the big board to tell you where your gate and terminal are. Then you runoff along with everyone else. The gates don't have adequate waiting areas so you wait in this big holding pen until you find where your flight is leaving from. On our last trip we were flying from Barcelona to Heathrow to Las Vegas. Since England is not in the EU anymore we had to go through their customs and security check. We had two hours so no big deal. WRONG!!! Security had some new equipment and it flagged everyone's bags so almost everyone was having a manual hand bag search. Then the equipment at one station went down and nobody knew what to do. Nobody came to help and since our bags were on the belt they would not let us take them off and go to another security station. After about a half hour they moved to another machine and proceeded to personally check almost every bag. It took forever and people were agitated because they were missing their planes. The security people's response: "we are doing a thorough job. It's for safety." With two hours between flights we ended up running to our gate and barely made the flight. We are in our 70's so this was no small feat. My family consists of several world travelers and we all agree, Heathrow is terrible. I always carry a carry-on and a backpack with medications in case my big suitcase is lost. In the future if I must go through Heathrow I will check my carry-on to avoid their security. I will have the bare essentials in my backpack (medications, book and extra underwear). That's it. Nothing else. Apparently their "x-ray" machine makes anything solid look like a threat. Carry only soft clothes. I would not even put soft shoes in my carry-on. If you must take a carry-on, strip anything solid out of it. If you go through Heathrow, don't have a tight connection. Give yourself a lot of time. Best yet, fly to FCO or AMS. Barcelona has some good flights. AVOID HEATHROW!!!!! read more

It's a decent international airport that serves its purpose. On the positive side: Good range of food options and shops. You can have a good meal here and get what you need (or more). Also, it's easy to get here on the Elizabeth Line or Heathrow Express. Negatives: (1) few bathrooms in terminal areas. I'd say about 2/3 less toilets than we see in the USA. (2) They make you check into the gate waiting area and it crams people together in limited space. It's nonsense. (3) The security is a bit more arduous. They still obsess over the small liquids being put in a little clear bag. Overall: I'd go here again if flying to London. But, it isn't as smooth or nicely operated as it should be! read more

It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on earth has ever produced the expression, 'As pretty as an airport'. Airports are not pretty. Although some airports go to great lengths to overcome not pretty, this one does, airports are not pretty no matter where they are. Not pretty airports arise because airports have so many travelers in a hurry who are so tired, cross, wobbly on their legs after having sat for so many hours, their checked luggage is later labeled with the unwelcome and dreaded 'unavailable' euphemism due to an 'officially classified Act of God' ( all meaning totally lost luggage ) they're primly told by long-in-the-tooth staff glaring at them with too much lip gloss, and their rental vehicle and no rental car is just not available told by pimply-faced teen-age rental car staff with bored eyes to travelers foolish enough to believe they want to drive or even can safely drive in London. Not pretty is understandably what these beleaguered travelers feel. Perhaps these not pretty airports are why and how some religions get started. It certainly must be the reason why so many religious sects hang around airports looking for converts. Religious sects have figured out that some people at an airport are at their most vulnerable and perplexed, desperately ready to accept any sort of guidance. As decades-seasoned airline travelers we found Heathrow Airport adequate, even sophisticated. Customs? No problem. Baggage? Never lost as we each only had wheeled carry-on that we never let out of our sight. Navigating? No problem as our cousins took us in hand for a three-hour gallivanting tour of the airport and then off to their home. I'd never been on a tour of an airport before. Turns out we could have easily spent far more than three hours happily touring this airport. There was a plethora of cool, amazing and even famous businesses at Heathrow offering in many fashions to separate us from our money. Cleanliness? Adequate. Organized? Very. Security? Better and nicer than American airports. Automated people movers? Standard. Amenities? Seems like there is everything here. People watching? 67 million passengers of any possible appearance and behavior pass through this airport each year. Showers? All the Heathrow showers cost money or require membership. Terminals? Four, and it is worth noting that all terminals are not created equal as the services and facilities vary at each terminal here. Sleeping? Reasonably accommodating of airport sleepers. Nap rooms offered in a few of the lounges. On the landside, or public area of the terminal, sleep cabins and guest rooms can be booked on a short-term or overnight basis. Hotels inside airport. Lounges? Pay-per-use, Single Visit Passes & Lounge Memberships. WiFi? Free and unlimited. Internet kiosks and mobile charging? Lots. Public Transit? Heathrow Pod Parking allows you to get to and from Terminal 5 in a driverless, 4-person electric vehicle in just six minutes that operates one every second. Extras? Lots. Disabled-friendly, Mail & Fly, SIM Cards & Mobile Phone Rental, Postal Services, Duty-Free, Baby Changing Facilities, Children's Play Area, Children Eat Free, Reserve & Collect, Water Stations, Information Desks, Airport Ambassadors, Luggage Baggage Trolleys, Luggage Storage & Lockers, Medical and Financial Facilities, Art Gallery, Observation Areas, and more. Heathrow Airport - I recommend. - Airports Near Me - Hounslow, XGL

This is a very busy and large airport so some folks may feel overwhelmed with the volume of foot traffic. That said, the airport has plenty of signage throughout which makes it easy to navigate. I had no issues finding the zone for airport pickups. I tend to travel light (carry on + personal item) so I can't speak for checked-in baggage experience. However, given flight delays and baggage mishaps throughout various airports/countries, it's worth learning to manage with just a carry-on (tons of great tips on YT for essentials/capsule wardrobes/etc). Overall pleasant experience for both arrivals and departures. Going through customs (arrival) and security (departure) were a breeze for me. Heathrow has a nice selection of luxury stores (Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Chanel..etc) and if you're US based, you can save a good amount of money on luxury items. Quite truthfully, we don't jet-set overseas often. Actually the last was to Turks & Caicos in '17. All of our other getaways have been plenty of (repeat and new) road-trips, traveling to the West Coast to visit my daughter or head to our all-time fave, Sanibel Island. So when hubs surprised me with a trip to Spain for my June birthday (and also to celebrate our anniversary), we prayed to baby Jesus that we navigate this maze of an airport meticulously within our 3hr layover and make our connecting flight to JFK just fine. Which we did. I remember London Heathrow from our other trip to Mallorca years ago when airport security wasn't stringent the least bit. Then 9/11 changed how we board planes and how we enter airports. And remember the days when you didn't have to think twice about how much liquid you can pack in your carry-on or that your 'liquids' had to be in CLEAR ziplocs bags (or pouches), or that your bronzer powder shouldn't be in the same 'liquids' bag? Be prepared to W.........A..........I...........T. If I'm comparing NYC airports' security to London's Heathrow, the last is the most thorough (I feel), methodical and slowest. And compared to Málaga's airport where you had to fend for yourself with unclear direction signs, hubs and I navigated Heathrow with ease during our connecting flight from Spain to this airport. Heathrow's purple connections signs all clearly pointed us in the right direction when we got off the shuttle bus to our new terminal flawlessly and had enough time to go through security and board our new flight from here to JFK. Flying out of London, you have many choices but I chose to fly out of LHR because of its flight options, many shops and restaurants. To preface, London Heathrow is an extremely large airport with many terminals so make sure you know which terminal you're flying out of. Security checkpoint is running smoother now compare to a month ago but that's not saying much because we waited about an hour to get through. We arrived 3 hours early and had about 45 minutes to spare. Once you get through security, you'll find all the duty shops, designer boutiques like Burberry, LV, Gucci and even Tiffany. There are much duty free shops as well but make sure you check the price online before getting caught up in the excitement of making a impulsive purchase. You may find you're over spending or spending the same as if you purchased at home. The gates are well placed and marked and they have moving sidewalks if you're in a hurry. There is sufficient seating located at each gate but finding a charging station can be difficult. Overall, Heathrow is a vey upscale, traveler friendly airport for the most part. read more
