We checked in 3 hours earlier per Airline's Rrecommendation however gates numbers were not posted. They did not post them till least 30 minutes before departure so we were not sure where to be at this large airport. By the time gates were posted everybody was already at the gates. not sure how did that happen. also checking in through security was a bit interesting. They still asked you to remove your lipstick and put it in a classic bag but they do not ask you to remove your shoes. They speak a little too fast and not clear so it is hard for foreigners without british accent to understand them. read more

this is such a terrible airport signs are confusing- and if you are going from terminal to terminal (or even different gates at that) you will feel like you're going in circles even if you have a connecting flight thru here, you still go through another security line (these foos are so strict on their liquids, be prepared to throw out half your shit) my boarding time was coming pretty close but the screens didnt even tell me what gate to go to until 10 minutes AFTER boarding. even at that we still had to go to another terminal because our plane wasnt at our gate (wtf) if you have a connecting flight thats in less than 2 hours, you better hope the travel gods are on your side read more

Heathrow is unquestioned a nice airport with plenty of shopping and dining options. Although I do wish it had maybe one or two more coffee shops in terminal 2. The wait to get through security was a bit long. Given it was the end of May and start of tourism season, they should have more security checkpoints open. My biggest gripe with Heathrow is the confusing and/or lack of signage when it comes to ride share or the train. My wife and I spent about ten minutes wandering around, trying to figure out how to get to the ride share pickup area which come to find out, is on a particular garage level. Locating where the train left to go downtown was a lost cause. Heathrow needs better signage indicating where to go for ride share pickup. read more

Ok first things first.... toilets... yes toilets..... terminal 3 has on main toilet area so it is incredibly crowded and smells pretty bad. Do yourself a favor and use the hidden toilets located in the duty free shopping area just past security. These are clean, uncrowded and definitely the way to go. On your way out a quick spritz of a cologne sample make you ready for your flight. read more

It's only natural that I would land in The Queen's Terminal. The airport was clean and spacious with ample signage and plenty of space and equipment to move large numbers of passengers along. The customs line can get very long but it moves along at an acceptable pace. Be on the lookout for line jumpers, because I definitely spotted a couple of people who felt that their time was more valuable than everyone elses. After clearing Customs, there are a couple of cafes and grab and go restaurants serving refreshments. Good thing too because I was absolutely famished when I got off of my flight. There's one shop that reminds me of a tiny 7-11 store. They offered a pretty great variety of sandwiches, as well as chips (crisps) and a soft drink for about £4... prices that are practically unfathomable in any US airport. Just in case you didn't get your retail therapy fix whilst in town, The Queen's Terminal houses at least a dozen high-end shops/brands including Burberry, Gucci, Jo Malone, Kate Spade, Harrod's, a separate Harrods Fine Watch Room, and more. The airport has any information desk that helps passengers navigate transportation options, including showing them how to get from the airport to their destination using the Tube (subway) if they so choose. The Tube station is a few floors below the airport itself, and the employees there are incredibly helpful. They set us up with "Oyster" subway cards and recommended the best pass options for us which really came in handy and saved us a lot of money during our trip. read more

One of the worst airports in the world. We arrived to LHR after a ten hour flight on British Airways. There was no terminal available so they parked us on tarmac and we had to wait for thirty minutes for the airport to send shuttle buses to put us on for about a fifteen to twenty ride to terminal three where we had to wait for an hour and a half for our luggage and there was no AC or seats. Going through their immigration was simple and quick. The only positive for this entire place. Our flight home was canceled and we had to deplane, go back through immigration and then work to get a train to terminal four for our hotel. That is another nightmare that I won't get into. The airport will only post the departure gate one hour before the flight. Bottom line, this airport is NOT traveler friendly. It's like five separate airports as the terminals are not close together. It's clean, the staff are about as friendly as airport staff get (don't get too excited, it's still an airport) and getting here is a breeze from central London and elsewhere in the UK. If you're looking to kill some time, do yourself a favour and head on over to terminal 5 for a thrilling 5-minute ride on the self-driving pods (totally free too, what a world we live in). If I could give zero stars I would. This airport is a complete shitshow; security leads that charge. You can't find your way around due to poor signage and security is a straight from the depths of hell experience. Thanks to United cancelling my flight to SFO (a shitshow of an airline) I had to land in Heathrow via Shannon, sit on the tarmac for a half hour, fight my way thru United to rebook, then try to get thru security. Meanwhile, minutes are ticking away as I hope and pray to get to my gate on time. Security agents were surly, slow, and plain assholes at best. Plus, I witnessed a security breach which I later submitted to Heathrow to investigate and they basically blew me off. I swear security there deliberately goes slow just to be vindictive. The scanner was literally diverting every bag that came thru for a hand check. Which, you guessed it, took a minimum of ten minutes each. No sense of urgency whatsoever. So eventually after being told to not take my shoes off, then setting off the alarm, my person being hand searched, and having my backpack hand searched, my flight is closing. I've got maybe 10 minutes to sprint at least a mile to get to my gate. I made it just as they were shutting the gate drenched in sweat. Good fun in the UK! I had to fly into LHR on my back to the US from Rome. Security was kind of a mess. They had to open both of my carry-on bags twice to check for stuff. At one point all of the bags that they needed to check just sat there for about 15 minutes, and it seemed like the employees were purposely not checking them. One really nice gentlemen saw that we were just standing there and came over and resumed the process of checking the bags, which was great as that moved things along. The airport seemed clean and there were restrooms everywhere, which was nice. All in all, an okay airport from my experience. read more

For such a large airport they can certainly do better in enhancing their support services. Staff happiness is a reflection of a well organized, efficient operation and to have the staff complaining and display their unhappiness to passengers, just paint a negative image on how things are running. First time back to Heathrow since 2019. I used to absolutely love this airport, what has happened? My Trans Atlantic flight landed and we sat on tarmac for near 45 minutes before airport gave us a gate. Connecting flight to Geneva next and we sat on taxiway for 3hrs waiting for takeoff!!! My friend left Gatwick the same time and had no issues. Return flight to Heathrow, we landed on time and again had to iat on tarmac for 40 minutes because not gate available and instead needed a bus to pick us up!! My final connecting transatlantic flight and we are boarded. As I write this we have been sat waiting to take off for 1 hour so far. This place has fallen to pieces. All the pilots do now are apologize continuously on behalf of the shoddy airport operations. The head of operations here should be fired. It should be 1 star but restaurants and shops are good in my opinion, so long as you can stop and are not sprinting trying to get to your connecting flight! read more

This airport is huge and at times confusing. There are many volunteer helpers to ask for the way though. Be prepared to walk a lot to get to your terminal. It was very, very crowded, shops were full, cafes and restaurants were full and so were the lounges. Card holders have to queue to get into the lounge with waiting times of roughly 30mins. The most surprising thing is that the walkway to the departing gates are narrow corridors separated by glass from the arriving gates. However, there is also deplaning on the departing side. On the way to the gate, they closed the walkway off to let people deplane across the walkway to the other arriving side. Travelers walking to their gate to board their plane were blocked from walking further by locked doors. Some were nearly missing their flights. We were all stuck in a narrow corridor with a closed glass door. That were very uncomfortable moments as some passengers freaked out and banged against the glass door screaming. I was cut off from my husband while our flight was already boarding and had no means to contact him - I was just quickly going to use the bathroom... read more

First visit here. This is a huge airport. The airport is very clean. Disinfectant stations every 100 feet or so. The staff are very friendly. Customs is fully digital and quick to get through. If you have a layover and want to leave the airport, you can go to excess baggage and store your bags up to 24H. Overall pleasant visit. read more

I was here in 2017 after finishing undergrad because I wanted a trip to celebrate my summer graduation and to get away from all the damage I had to my mental health. Back then it was a lot lighter but felt good because I was at Heathrow. This is a very uncanny airport because it's not only a friendly place but very big. "Mr. Wang, how can I help you today?". The service doesn't get any more friendlier than this. They have a wide variety of eateries and duty free shops that carry items you don't find in the US. I have gotten drinks here that were at prices lower than what I would find at SFO. Got a very delicious cup of tea here and it smelled real nice. I was very much looking forward to my trip to London, but I was dreading going through Heathrow since I had heard so many crappy things about it. Turns out this was actually my most pleasant international airport experience that I can remember. I suppose I'll talk about when I first got in to Heathrow's Terminal 5. I was imagining long immigration lines. No, l literally just scanned my passport and took a picture. It was literally so fast that I realized after the fact that the automation took away the one thing I wanted on my passport...a visa stamp. With that said, I'll trade the stamp quick and easy entry with zero fuss. Easy peasy. On my departure trip, it was actually just as easy as far as security goes. I bought Fast Track for our trip out, which was a measly £12.50 per person. When you're used to TSA Pre in the U.S., I ain't wasting my damn time in a security line. Literally through within 2 minutes. I'm solid. Terminal 5 is what I would expect from any legitimate international terminal...basically, a freakin' mall. Nothing better than being able shop Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Burberry duty-free! I was THIS damn close to buying a LV bag, but I thought better of it given my already huge shoes purchase during my trip. Overall, it's real nice, real spacious, and everything LAX isn't. Coming through here just made me realize how garbage LAX's international terminal is. I wasn't hungry when I came here, but the food options at Terminal 5 looked pretty legit. Something to note for next time. Also, the automated people mover between 5A, 5B, and 5C is pretty fast and clean, have no issue with that. I've had my fair share of those in Seattle, Orlando, and Denver, so I'm used to them. The best thing about London is how insanely easy it is to travel around because of The Tube. Thankfully, The Tube is connected to Terminal 5! Literally a quick (ok, maybe an hour) and cheap trip to and from Central London. I don't know why anyone would bother taking an Uber or the Heathrow Express. The more I think about Heathrow, the more I realize how much I like it. If you must fly out of or have a layover in Heathrow, give yourself PLENTY of time. However much time you think you need, double it. Maybe triple. I had what was supposed to be a relatively quick and easy layover from Charlotte, NC on the way to Helsinki. My imagined 2 hour break from plane travel with an opportunity to get a snack and stretch my legs has turned into a several hour long nightmare. If you layover here, plan for deplaning to take 1 hour or more bc you have to climb down stairs to the tarmac and be bussed to the terminal and forced to go through security again even though you went through it before your first flight. Also plan for security to flag your bag for extra inspections bc it thinks your solid deodorant is a liquid (???), which will delay you getting to your gate so you will have to sprint through endless dark, stuffy hallways only to be told by uncaring gate agents that you're too late and you can't board, even though the plane is still there and the jet bridge hasn't even retracted. Then those same gate agents will direct you to a service desk that doesn't exist and a different service desk will direct you to a service desk before security so you have to go all the way back up and talk to yet another service agent who will tell you the next available flight isn't for two days. When you explain you only missed your flight bc of the incompetence of the Heathrow Airport staff, he will magically be able to waitlist you for the upcoming flights. Then of course you will have to go through security once more, for the third time in 24 hours. I write this review while sitting in the terminal, watching countless other passengers sprint desperately to their gates only to be turned away (except for the handful of people who come 20 min later and are, for some reason, allowed on the flight). I don't know if this chaos is the result of a post-pandemic world or if it's always been like this. If it's the latter, I'm shocked anyone has ever been able to fly in and out of here. If you're reading this, please pray that some other poor schmuck gets held up in security like I did and misses his flight so I can have a seat and make it to my final destination. For both the arrival and departure, the experience was somewhat confusing and chaotic. There was a mixture of polite and unfriendly staff, as well as staff that was clueless. I arrived three hours before my late morning international flight, and got through after an hour. It took six different employees to figure out how to check me in, and three security checks to enter the terminal: one for the airline, one with the boarding pass and face scan, and one to check the body and personal belongings. The airport terminals are not connected and require a bus transfer. The ride to Terminal 5 was terribly packed, and I was concerned whether I was even on the right bus as the driver told me to board the bus for Terminal 2 and 3 instead of entering the line for Terminal 5. Access to the gates when coming from another terminal are not allowed without a boarding pass. Even when inside a terminal, the route to the gates can be completely blocked off to allow all passengers to disembark a plane. The wait can last over twenty minutes, causing misery for folks rushing to catch a flight. Unfortunately gate information is slow to be released. For my flight, the gate was not displayed until a few minutes prior to boarding time. Best bet is to be in the area where the lounge for the airline resides. Entry to the country was relatively fast and simple as U.S. citizens can use the ePassport lanes to scan their passport and face. For transportation to and from London, we had pre-booked tickets for the Heathrow Express. The train runs every fifteen minutes to and from the London Paddington station, stopping at Terminals 2 & 3 as well as Terminal 5. Prices are cheaper the earlier the tickets are purchased and if selecting a roundtrip. Other than that, at least for Terminal 3, inside had a selection of shops, including touristy ones like Cadbury. Dining options appeared rather sufficient. The seats by the gates were surprisingly empty, and was difficult to find one near an outlet. Wi-Fi is available although can be spotty at times. read more

WOW, is all that I can say! This airport is so impressive! We flew in and out of Heathrow on our adventures in the UK and were blown away by all that it is. The night we arrived, it was late, so we stayed at the Holiday Inn on airport property before taking another flight to Scotland the next morning. It was so convenient and inexpensive. Perfect if you need to break up your trip like we did. On the way out of London back to Phoenix, we did not allow enough time! Traffic getting to Heathrow from London city center can be ROUGH. We were literally running and almost didn't make the international time cut off. Lesson learned! However, the employees there TOTALLY helped us make it happen. Without them, we would have missed our flight for sure! I would recommend allowing at least 3-4 hours of taxi + airport time if you're flying international. An airport that probably should be known as "Heat Row." Good Lord, is this airport steaming hot! Yes, I know that its January, but 80+ degrees? C'mon now! Anyways, clearing UK customs was fairly sweet & simple. 2-3 questions, and I was done to continue toward the transportation area. Baggage claim was easy as well. What wasn't exactly easy was finding my city transport. Although he was holding a sign up with my name, how exactly do you find him? Answer: information desk. This desk had a yellow "I" that highlighted the kiosk area, where a lovely female British national told me exactly where to find my transport. Worst part about this airport? Clearly in where to exit. Talk about WTF! Two elevators to go to the 4th floor (5th floor was closed for construction) parking deck. You almost have to fight 50-60 people to get a spot that will fit a few folks at a time in the elevator. My transport driver nearly came to blows with a guy that cut in front of him. I loved my driver's heated exchange at the time, even though that others didn't. Whatever. Heathrow is about a 20-minute drive from Kensington & West London, without traffic. Overall, not bad. The floors could be a little cleaner, but hey. Welcome to London, and the world's busiest airport. read more

The only spacious part of the airport are the rows and rows and endless rows of duty free all laid out, sparkling and new. Once you clear those, however, you find yourself in DMV-like hell. It's crowded as all get out. While you can choose from thousands of bottles of perfume, you have only a handful of food options, one restroom, and a tiny spout to fill your water bottle. Make sure you start toward your gate the moment it's listed as it could end up being quite a trek. Oh, and get in cue for the toilet first thing. Once you finally get to your gate, there are no conveniences so you'll have to hold it until the you're well on your way and the seatbelt sign goes on. Gets an extra star because our flight took off on time and safely. read more

This review is on the recently opened Terminal 2. Whoever designed this airport should be commended. Check-in was smooth, although United Airlines was primarily responsible. The security checkpoint was designed for a fast flow. The lines broke into two lines from one, whereas most airports funnel two lines into one which causes congestion, not here. Whoa. This airport is huge AF. But even if it's really not in size, it feels like it. First off, arriving from Houston, getting to baggage claim, and going through customs was a BREEZE. London, "you got dis thang locked down," as we Houstonians say. Departures from LHR - gooood lawwwd. Baggage/ticketing area is a bit overwhelming. I think once you know where to go and what you're doing, it's ok. But I'm so thankful I gave myself all the extra time for this international flight. Everything from start to finish was far more time consuming than arriving, so keep that in mind. Food options - meh. Not the tastiest options along those lengthy terminals. If you find a good spot, stick with it and don't look further. I was also surprised I didn't see any water bottle refill stations. The water fountains were in pretty gross condition, and I wasn't getting that near my bottle. Hope they add some! read more

For being such a ginormous international hub, I'd say Heathrow is a pretty solid airport. -Security has been anywhere from 10-45 minutes. -LOVE the automated immigration process. -My favorite thing about LHR is the connection to central London via the tube (picadilly line). read more

I like the easy transportation options in and out of Heathrow, but the 3 stars is for the excessively long amount of time it takes to navigate to your end point when you actually get to the airport. It doesn't feel as bad when you arrive into the airport (maybe because your excitement level tempers it), but for departures it feels brutal. Especially if you come by the Piccadilly line, you can easily already have spent an hour getting there. Then, you have a moderate walk to security. But the walk to your gate after security...well, let's just say that you should plan ahead! read more

Ugh, LHR is a awkward beast of an airport, on one hand, its fantastic and on the other its a nightmare! London Heathrow is a major hub for Europe so if you are traveling to western Europe, or beyond, there is a good chance you may have a layover here. That is fine as most gates for connecting flights may be very close to each other. Most is the keyword here. I had a layover here, which sounded fine and dandy only to find out I needed to take a bus to another terminal where my gate was, okay does not sound too bad. Well I was already tired, hot (From carrying luggage), and irritable. Not a good sign for what was ahead of us, which ended up being almost a half an hour bus ride. Normally not an issue, but standing the whole time, lack of cool air, and crammed in with little to no space really was unbearable and I am usually not one to complain. Come on LHR, you are better than this! Either way, once to our terminal finding the gate was a breeze, although we had to go through security again.... Lots of food choices and various big named stores to shop at. Thankfully since our flight was over two hours late British Airways offered each of us a twenty pound certificate to spend in the airport (Sweet), which was quite sweet of them. That alone made it much more bearable. Either way, I am sure there are more positive aspects to mention about LHR, but I had one heck of a terrible time there sadly. Heathrow Airport sadly all the other Airports have passed you in shopping, food and amenities. Years ago I had a day lay over and thought I was in utopia. Now a couple hours is long enough. More seating for passengers waiting for gates would be appreciated. That gives you time to shop which is sadly lacking and truly not the leader in this category anymore. So you fly in to terminal 3 but need to get to 5 and vicea versa on your return. What a time waster you need a new plan. Coming I ended up on a bus between terminals than customs clearance but needed a new boarding pass as I missed my connecting flight. On return I have to exit the airport after taking a train and start from the beginning. Now thinking back moving people quickly is definitely not your strength. Years ago it took me several hours to get to my gate and my seats were given away. Luckily they upgraded that time to first class. read more

Overall, I must say, the Heathrow Airport experience has been one of the best I have dealt with in my local, national and international travels - considering it's immense size and incredible traffic and passenger volume! Throughout my instances to regularly travel yet not a professional airport reviewer by any means, and not a business traveler - but a mainly fun and demands trekker, I have developed as concise a process for gauging the merit of each airport I have visited. My criteria are: 1) ease of access to and from public or private ground transportation: 4.5; 2) convenient parking when having to leave vehicle or dropping off: which I did not include as we travelled in and out via cab; 3) atmosphere, ambience, public facilities, seating areas and access to communications, charging and Wi-Fi: 3.5; 3) overall human customer service - including but not limited to ticket counter, TSA, Customs, Hospitality, Retail, Support Services, Restaurant and Baggage Handler knowledge, communication, attitude and demeanor: 5.0; 4) ease of flight information access throughout facility via signage, boards, screens or clear understandable PA system announcements: 4.0; 5) distance, maneuverability, access and convenience of trekking from gate to gate and/or concourse to concourse for connecting flights: 4.0; 6) quantity, value, convenience, quality and comfort of eateries and/or retailers: 5.0; and last, but not least 7) baggage handling, claims and retrieval location, process and lost and found assistance: 4.0. Taking all the aforementioned categories, I've devised a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best an airport can be! This airport rates a: 4.4. Most positive point at this airport was: that despite it's size and design, it's exceptional staff and signage make it easy to maneuver, not to mention somewhat enjoy the experience. The most negative point here, and it was disturbing was: being singled out, profiled if you will, on my carry-on baggage on our return leg to the U.S. and being told by security our baggage was too large (when it fit the baggage sizer), and not different than when entering the U.K, yet everyone within 10' of our seats had the same, or larger bags than we. read more

ZERO STARS! How do you lose luggage for a flight that was cancelled??? It didn't even make it onto a plane to leave the airport! TSA is super slow, slower than 3rd world countries airports. They're busy socializing and walking around like snails. No sense of urgency. If you hate your job that's on you don't put it out on passengers. Other staff are so lazy. Two guys sitting at the customs desk but only 1 scanning. Two long lines. The other guy was just sitting there saying "get your boarding tickets ready". When another airport worker came with a family he all of a sudden could help them. Told other people he could only do domestic. Eurowings is a nightmare don't ever book them. Despite the multiple layers of security; when it comes to shopping, airport clubs and all around access to a major city, it is a pretty good airport. Whenever I come here I can always find good and rare scotches and buy a bunch of souvenirs and food stuffs for my trip home. There are also several airport clubs to choose from, especially if you have the Priority Pass. Most of them are pretty good and comfortable to wait for last minute gate announcement.
