I think this is the 20th review that's starting with: Hector is the man. He's excellent and a pro at altering any and everything that you could possibly think of that doesn't fit. In my case, jeans that are too long. :( While I haven't taken any kray-zay to Sir Hector yet, I almost find myself wanting to find something complicated (leather anything??!) to him just to have it altered to perfection. Hector does impeccable alterations, but he can sew literally anything. He created beautiful and dramatic theater curtains for my at-home magic studio and showed me how to install them. Hector came to my home to take all the necessary measurements and then delivered the curtains himself. He's smart and kind and passionate about his work in which he takes great pride. Hector is the best! I bought a vintage black leather jacket at Iguana Vintage Clothing. But after wearing it a few times, the stitching along the shoulder and sleeve came apart. I figured it wouldn't be expensive to repair, since it just needed to be re-stitched. Stupid me for assuming. I took it to a place *who shall remain nameless* that advertised doing work on leather. When I showed them what needed to be done, I was shocked at the price they quoted. It seemed really high. Told them I'd find someone else to do it. Thank GOD I waited and went to Hector. His price was less than half what the other place quoted me. And his work is amazing. Wouldn't go anywhere else for alterations and repairs. One thing to keep in mind: he is a small family-run business. So call ahead to make sure he's there if you need a quote or you're picking up. He was closed when I went to pick up my jacket the first time. When I asked him about it, he said he had a family emergency. Also, there are a few parking spaces in back. If you go north on Harper, turn left into the alley just before Santa Monica Blvd. I believe he has 2 or 3 spots, right behind his shop. read more

One thing I look for when it comes to alterations is someone who listens. Unfortunately, Hector doesn't listen and tries to rush through everything. I went in to get fitted for my wedding. The way he pinned it seemed ok, but when I came back to try it on, it fit completely different. I could tell he was frustrated that I wasn't happy and I felt that he didn't want to accommodate me and change what I didn't like. Aside from that, when I went to check out the ticket was almost SEVENTY dollars more than what he originally wrote down. He claims he "added wrong." I'm sorry but that's not my problem. I'm not one moved to write reviews... either the service I experienced was awesomely good, or maddening awful... In the case of Hector's Tailor Shop, it was MADDENING AWFUL... only because Hector himself did not honor his word. (And come to find out, he charges more than the tailor at my high-priced cleaners down the street). The upshot was that on 2 separate occasions I was quoted one price for a simple jean hem with "original hem"--once last week in person at the shop, and a 2nd time today on the phone, right before I was to come in--but after I came in, tried them on and Hector marked them... when I got my receipt, the price was over double what I was quoted. I reminded Hector that I just called 5 minutes ago and was told a significantly lower price, and he said "original hem is more work". I said, alright... but I was CLEAR about asking for "original hem". He didn't acknowledge the mistake, he didn't make an offer to help rectify in anyway but instead said--as I was reaching to take them back--"I don't want to do it." I thought, "We'll we agree there." I can understand that mistakes happen, but the same mistake in quoting me the same price for the same service TWICE??? Yet somehow he gets it right once it's on the receipt? It just felt like a scam--a price "bait & switch"... who's going to walk away after going through trouble of trying them and having them marked? Well, it didn't work with me and earned him 1-star for his total lack of integrity. read more

Hector is great. I have been to him several times to hem my pants b/c I am 5"3 and pants are always made for women that are 6 feet tall. His shop is little and right around the corner from my house so it's always easy to drop off. He has you put the pants on and asks where you want them to fall on the foot. He does good work and his prices are very reasonable. He doesn't say much but seems like a very nice man. Turn around is fast and when you pick up and pay they are always very thankful for the business. HIGHLY recommend using Hector for your tailoring needs. When I asked the folks at Pro-Italia where I should go to have my motorcycle leathers taken in (after losing weight and dropping down a few sizes), this is where they sent me. I could not be happier. It's not cheap -- but if you've already spent $1200 on your gear, would you rather spend another $300 and have it be perfect or risk having it ruined in less capable hands? Pretty easy decision, IMO. Hector and his team are simply the best tailors I have ever encountered. I have used many such services over the years and many start out as good experiences. Too often, though, the longer term result is unexplained delays, shoddy product requiring many returns to the shop and prices that exceed value provided. Not so with Hector. He is honest about what he can do and what he cannot. For example, he showed us how he might improve moth holes and made clear that in some cases, the repair simply would be acceptable. He took older, but expensive suits and made them look new by cutting down shoulder pads, taking in baggy pants and suit coats. He altered new suits so that they fit perfectly. He altered my partner's otherwise billowy shirts; now they fit like a glove. And he prices his work reasonably. Anytime we have tailoring needs, it's to Hector we go. I have been going to Hector for about 8 years now. I have followed him to three different locations. Two years ago I purchased five expensive suits ($1,200 each) at a ridiculously low price. I brought the suits to Hector and he he altered them perfectly. People always comment on how perfectly the suits fit me. I actually don't think his prices are THAT high. They are high, but he is operating a stand alone business in West Hollywood. I can't expect him to work for free. Plus I like to keep my pink dollars in West Hollywood. I think the key to working with a good tailor is to discuss in detail what you want done, try it on after the work is completed and if it isn't done to your exact specifications you need to discuss it at that moment. Several years ago Hector hemmed some pants for me and I asked him to correct the length as I like a full break in the leg. He made the corrections with no issue. read more

I can't praise Hector enough! Great work and great service! I brought him a skirt that needed additional lining (white skirts are a bit too see through in certain lighting for my taste) and he gave me the option of bringing my own fabric, or he could provide it. I opted for him to select the fabric and he chose a great material that provides extra "coverage" and soft against the skin. Turnaround time was about 3 days (could have been sooner, but I was in no rush). This ran me $55 for the service and fabric, a bit pricier than other places, but good work isn't cheap and cheap work isn't good! The one star is because he seems to be able to hem adequately, but then again I'm sure Francisco's, City Express, and any other business offering alterations could. I have never experienced more unprofessional inconsiderate service in my life anywhere ever. I wanted to support this local business but I will never go back. When I went to drop off my things to get hemmed and altered I waited 20 minutes as Hector was out on an errand in the middle of working hours. Then I gave them a generous week (7 full days) to do 3 garment minor alterations. I came back on day seven and this man hadn't even started on them!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! He says come back 24 hrs later, same time next day, so I do and give him an extra hour and he is STILL not done with them. As he was rushing to do my last dress, when I went back it was not to my satisfaction and so he had to fix it for me. In total I went back to the shop 3 times in one day to get my items. Ask for a discount if you're not satisfied, his prices are way inflated for mediocre work, no customer service, not even an apology for being late on my order. I WILL NEVER GO BACK HERE AGAIN and don't encourage anyone else to try this place. read more

The taper on my pants was perfect and mr Hector is so friendly and his prices are very affordable. I also like that I saw his son or someone (12-13 years old) sweeping up around the shop. Hector is THE man to go to for complex tailoring. I had an expensive leather jacket that needed alterations, and his work was flawless - after taking several inches off the sleeves and waist, he shortened the zipper and replicated the original cuffs and waistband perfectly. It couldn't have been easy. I'd consider his prices very reasonable for the quality you're getting. If you simply need your jeans hemmed, you can probably find other places that are cheaper/faster...but if you want something done right, take it to Hector. One small complaint - I was originally quoted 2 weeks for the work to be done; it ended up taking 5. I honestly don't mind waiting for a job well done, but it would have been nice to get an accurate quote to begin with. read more

Hector is the man. I just brought him a motorcycle jacket that i was TERRIFIED to have altered because those things aren't cheap. But, I loved it so much that I just couldn't bear to send it back, so I took my chances - I'm so glad I did. He did an amazing job - he completely reconstructed it and made it perfect for me - he moved the shoulders up, shortened the sleeves, took in the body. I found Hector thru a Google search, read the reviews here on Yelp and decided to give him a try. I had several very nice suits that I needed altered in order to get ready for job interviews. Hector did a great job, had the suits ready in a few days. They fit perfectly now. He isn't cheap. But if you have something more than getting cuffs or a hem altered, it pays to hire someone who really knows what he is doing. In addition, he's a really nice guy. Hector does great work but he surprised me today. No the work was great, but he took me for an extra 25 dollars. I dropped off on Wednesday and asked if I could pick up at end of day. He told me it would be 24 dollars. I asked how much if I pick up tomorrow, he said 10. I already gave him 15 since I thought I would pick up same day. I told him tomorrow would be fine and left. Two day later o come to pick up and he tells me 24. I tell him I gave you 15 and he says ya but it's 24. I try and remind him that he told me 10 if I pick up next day. He calls me a liar and tells me if I don't want to pay to leave. I put a 20 dollar bill on the counter and tell him the only liar is you. I've taken two Schott leather jackets to Hector and the work this man does is not tailoring, it's art. Very few can work with leather properly, even fewer can shape it and cut it correctly so it feels like a second skin; Hector belongs in this rare air. The two leather jackets i have are perfectly custom-fitted to my body and I look damn sexy in them. So sexy in fact, when I wear the coats in public, I get chased down streets. So, if you don't want to look (and feel) like a rockstar, don't go to Hector. Otherwise, give this man your best leather or anything else for that matter. read more

I went to this shop solely based on the yelp reviews (Well yelp reviews, you failed me). It out of my way, but I needed a detailed job on a pair of designer white pants, so I figured it was better not to risk it, and put solid reviews over convenience. When I first arrived at the shop, Hector greeted me- well not so much as greeted, as it clearly pains him to smile- but asked what I needed done. He was curt, but honestly that wouldn't really knock off any stars in my review if this was a positive experience otherwise, I would have just expected a friendlier greeting to a new customer. He said my pants would be ready on Tuesday. Tuesday rolled around, and I wasn't able to make it to the shop, so I stopped in the following Friday. He told me he forgot to do them. Ok... Three days after they were supposed to be done... Ok. He said they would be ready that afternoon if I wanted to come back. I said ok. But that afternoon rolled around, and I wasn't able to make it. The following Friday, a week from when he first forgot to do the pants, I was finally able to get back in this neighborhood. I go into the shop. He searched for my pants for a good 10-15 minutes. He can't find them. What?! Maybe if this shop wasn't kept like a disaster this wouldn't be such a problem. I didn't say anything though, just waited. He finally finds my, again, WHITE designer pants crumpled up on the sewing machine. He forgot to do them again. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? That is twice he forgot, AND had the nerve to keep white pants crumpled under a pile of clothes (yes, they were dirty). He said come back, and he'll do it. Um, no thanks man, I respect my time and my garment, you clearly don't. If you respect your time and like your clothes, you shouldn't do your business here either. read more

After I had such a great experience with my tailoring, my roommate brought in a few shirts that needed to be taken in. He did not have results as good as mine. Truthfully, the two shirts he brought in were altered with such a slim cut that it ruined the fit in the chest/shoulder area. At $25 a piece for alterations he was pretty upset that he was out $50 and two of his expensive shirts were unwearable. Having realized the mistake, Hector paid for the replacement of his shirts in addition to refunding my roommate's alteration costs. The take-away? I went to get a shirt fitted and pants hemmed. I dropped off my clothes on a Monday and was told to pick them up Friday. When I came Friday afternoon I was told they weren't ready but to come back on Monday. On Monday they were still not ready. Thursday morning I came in before work. One of the pant legs was a little longer than the other, I asked Hector about this but he said it was fine and I thought maybe I was being picky (my friends later confirmed one leg was longer than the other). Then I tried on the shirt and it fit well but I noticed there was a stain on the shoulder, I've never worn this shirt before but since I'm going to get the shirt cleaned I didn't say anything. Finally as I'm changing Hector walked in on me and said he forgot I was there, I believe him but still. I came here because of the excellent yelp reviews and yelp has never steered me wrong but my experience did not live up to the high ratings. I hope mine was a unique experience. Good Luck! read more
