Needless to say, when you have to cough up thousands of dollars to keep from turning into peoplesicles it's nice to know where to go. Ironically, really expensive expenditures like heating systems & renovations are rarely, if ever, reviewed on the interwebs so we turned to our rockstar real estate agents who have been really excellent in steering us to right sources for our money pit's needs. Sadly this was their one lemon & it was as bitterly sour as a bitter melon vinaigrette. So where to start? We contracted Portland Heating Inc to remove our unstable coal chimney, install a new gas heater & HVAC system including adding heating vents to the bedrooms (hey, I'm all for togetherness but huddling for warmth, not so much). They came in ~15-20% over budget (usually you budget ~10% for contingencies, say like finding an extended family of voles in your walls or rampant dry rot, neither of which was the problem here) & were 2 weeks behind schedule. This ended up really screwing over the flooring guys who were basically saints. In fact, they were so behind schedule that they were still working on the day that the movers were moving us in which is pretty sad since they had a little over a month to get the job done. Not only did they get sooty footprints on the RAW wood floors that the flooring guys had sanded despite multiple signs as well as phones messages left for them NOT to walk into the kitchen but Chris, the assistant who thankfully is probably insulting people back in his home state of Alaska as I type, was not only rude but refused to give an estimate of how much longer he would be working on the day that the movers were moving us in. This is not an isolated incident nor was it unknown to the owner, Paul Cessaro, as apparently Chris had told another client that he couldn't believe she was proud to have bought her house as the neighborhood wasn't that nice--Paul shared this little gem with us when I pretty clearly stated that I never wanted Chris inside my house again because he was so rude. In terms of competency, I can only say that they didn't completely wrap the new duct work which they said they would do & ended up costing us $80 to have someone else do. Two different energy efficiency analysis firms told us that the pressure in the heating system that Portland Heating installed was too low. They made the duct work in the old coal chimney space so oversized (we were told by multiple contractors that it didn't need to fill the space) that 6 different contractors looked at the hole they left extending from the basement to the attic in our house & either "forgot" to give us an estimate or gave us a ridiculously high estimate hoping that we'd pick someone else or give up. So if you know a pedophile who poisoned your dog while mugging your granny who needs HVAC work, by all means send them to Portland Heating. Otherwise put the yellow pages heating section on the wall & start throwing darts. You couldn't do worse than we did.

My 90 year old Aunt needs to have her electric furnace replaced and have worked with AirCare NW for…read moremany years. She is on a fixed income and was told that the replacement would cost $11,000. I attempted to reach out to the company just to talk with them about their quote and to get details on why it was so high. They did not return either of my calls and ended up calling my Aunt and told her that they were very angry and would absolutely not talk to me about the quote they provided. As a result of me trying to ensure my Aunt was not being taken advantage of they are now sending her check back to her and cancelling the install appointment. Luckily I was able to get a hold of another vendor that basically told me that the price she was quoted was 4x what it should have been and they will have one of the owners out to her house today at 1:00 to do a walk-through and provide an estimate. They may do great work but when you get angry when someone tries to get details of your quote and your response is to get angry is no way to do business, in my humble opinion.

After he left, I discovered that he had plastered my furnace with multiple full page size stickers for his company, and tried to pull off the small name tag for my long established, credible furnace guy. He was not there to do anything with my furnace! Not his place to do that without asking! My (previously) clean grey furnace is in a semi finished part of my basement and this is a real eyesore. I called to ask him to ask how to get the stickers off (they don't pull off) and he was very unprofessional-- basically said too bad, try whatever I wanted, and hung up. Stay away from this company! It is one thing to make a mistake. Another to take no responsibility for it.

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! Our furnace went out on a Tuesday. I call our usual heating company,…read moreBeaverton Heating and A/C. The number is disconnected, & the website is gone. Weird. So, I call these guys, Beaverton Heating and Cooling, & explain I need help. The guy asks if I've used them before & I explain no, the company I used prior seems to have disappeared. He asked me for the number I was trying to reach. I said, "doesn't matter, looks like they're out of business." Oddly, the guy kept pressing me until I gave him the actual phone number that had been disconnected. Once I did, he agreed to send a tech out. Said the tech would be there between 4:30 and 5p. OK, fine. Well, not fine. Around 5:40p, I get a call saying the tech's truck broke down & we'd have to reschedule for the next day. It was down to 63 degrees in my house, so I asked if there was any way they could get someone to come. The guy on the phone says, "fine, I guess I'll see what I can do." Then, Jacob calls & explains that he's now fielding broken down truck guys calls, & asks if I still really need him to come out. Well, yea, I do. So, Jacob says, "fine, I'll be there shortly." 20 minutes later Jacob knocks on the door. He wreaks of cigarette smoke, so I quickly usher him into the garage to the furnace. As he approaches the furnace he says, "yup, this is really old. I'm not gonna bullshit ya. Ya probably need a new one. Not much I can do, but I guess I'll have a look." He reached for a tool in his bag, & apparently it wasn't there. He exhales exasperatingly and says, "fuckin' kids, always taking stuff. These kids these days don't know how to work. He took my favorite tool. He's out sleeping in the car. I should go out there and pop him in the face." By now I'm really regretting my decision to have this guy out, but the house was getting colder & I was hopeful he could get us heat. Also, I mentioned the fact that the other company seemed to have disappeared, and he says, "Oh, yea, that's our sister company." Why didn't the first guy on the phone (the one strangely pressing me for the phone number) tell me that? Weird. Seems like this company has many branches by many names. So, Jacob hooked up a wire from the circuit board (with flashing green lights) down to the motor area. Says, "Look I'm not gonna stand here and bullshit ya. You're gonna need a new furnace. I'm not allowed to sell you anything for less than $5500. I could replace this, try that, leads to a new failed part, and a whole can of worms to find out you really just need a new one. I'm tired, and I'm not in the mood to sit here and sell you something you don't need or bullshit you. So, looks like you just need a new one. By the way, that'll be $129 for me coming out today." GAH! I was so mad! The whole interaction was so unprofessional! Well, next day while I was at work, I get a voicemail around 1p. "Hi, this is Jacob, sorry about the delay, I hope I have the right number now. I know my coworker was supposed to get to you today, but it looks like his truck just broke down and now I have to field his calls. If you want me to still come to you, call me back in ten minutes." WTH?! Doesn't he realize he already saw me yesterday?! And, how often do they use this truck breaking down bit? Well, after hearing my horrible experience, a friend recommended someone at AirPro Heating and Air Conditioning. He was out the next morning, was clean-cut, didn't wreak of smoke, didn't curse once, & took the time to look up the meaning of those flashing lights on my circuit board. Turns out the pressure switch needed a reset. He unplugged that part, plugged it back in, & the heater kicked on immediately. $80 later I was warm & happy. NEVER CALLING BEAVERTON HEATING AND COOLING AGAIN!
