The "chef" is just an individual who spreads rice on a pre-cut nori and then spoons in some pre-chopped fish paste/mixture. The fact that the fish is pre-chopped means the restaurant can maximize the fish without much waste. If you are a true Japanese food lover, you may find the food a bit lacking. read more

Walked around downtown Vancouver on our trip and we wanted something light and passed by Hello Nori and the outside/inside aesthetics caught our eyes and who doesn't love sushi?! Since it was our first time here, our server was super nice and explained to us what the restaurant was all about, if you are a fan of hand rolls and great quality fish then defiantly come here because you won't regret a single bite you take at all! I chose the set menu of six rolls! Which came with Toro, Yellowtail, King Salmon, Scallop, Crab, and Truffle Lobster! Usually I'm not a big fan of salmon in general but this was amazing. You couldn't taste the salmon at all and it just melts in your mouth, just like the other fishes too! Also I decided to order a couple of individual roll, which consist of Unagi, Octopus, Spicy Bluefin Tuna, and had to try their special of the day! And that was their wagyu steak! I finally was able to try Hello Nori last night but only their takeout cut rolls. Hello Nori was the only sushi place that was opened after I was finished work so I ordered some via Uber to pickup. They had a buy one get one free deal for the tamago rolls so I got 2 tamago rolls, 1 toro roll and 1 ora king salmon roll. It was packaged so nicely I loved it so much and it came with soy sauce, wasabi and ginger. The rolls are bigger than your standard maki rolls from other sushi places and the sushi rice is soooo good. The tamago rolls were so tasty, I usually am not a fan of tamago but they made it so sweet and tasty I loved it. The toro roll was absolutely my favourite since the fish was so so fresh and had tasty scallion in it. The ora king salmon roll was amazing as well, I liked how the salmon had a bit of sesame oil flavouring and the salmon was extremely fresh. All in all, I was very full from the 4 rolls, the rolls are cut into 4 pieces but they are very big and filling but not too overpowering. Okay so I get that covid numbers are starting to drop and most people have had their first dose or are in the process of getting their second. HOWEVER, it's not like everyone that wants to get their second dose has been able to just yet. Every restaurant I've been to still has some form of social distancing for seating OR plastic dividers as a precaution. I assumed the same could be said for Hello Nori. This was not the case and though upon arrival me and my friend sat away from others, halfway through my meal I was asked to move my belongings over as a complete stranger sat right next to me, within 0.5m. This made me EXTREMELY uncomfortable and the rest of my meal was just me trying to eat as quickly as possible to leave - very unenjoyable. To check out, we had to walk up to the front till. We had asked to split our check in 2. I paid first for half the check, and my friend paid for the second. Upon payment, she realized she had been charged for the whole meal. Essentially, the 2 of us had paid 1.5x the cost of the meal. She pointed this out to the waitress at the till who interrupted her and told her gratuity was already included. My friend had to repeat herself and then we had to wait 20 mins for a refund. 2 Waiters/waitresses attempted to help us out but were struggling with their POS system and eventually just paid my friend in cash. The food was decent, but the service here just really did not sit well with me. I unfortunately will not be back. read more

Nice, clean interior. I like the seating plan with the u-shaped bar so everyone can see the chefs making the hand rolls. We all opted for the 5 hand rolls since it did seem like a good deal, saving about ~$8 vs ordering them a la carte. We also got the shiso mojito based on the recommendation of our server. The drink was surprisingly large. It was refreshing and had some yuzu in it. I would definitely get the drink again. As for the rolls, my favourites were the yellowtail and the scallop. The toro was a little disappointing as it was more like negitoro. Since it had green onion and chopped up quite a bit. Whereas the yellowtail pieces were larger and tasted fresher. The scallop was like chopped scallop with some mayo and tobiko mixed in. The crab and truffle lobster both had a shredded meat kind of texture. And tasted just okay to me. I liked how each handroll was placed on our plate as we finished each one. The nori was crisp, but a little difficult to bite into after the first bite. Overall, I liked the concept and service was great. However, my personal preference would be to enjoy sushi as regular sushi rolls. This place could've definitely been better. We came here for the six combination hand-roll which was $32 per order/person. We saw the restaurant the previous day walking by shopping in the downtown area and thought that ambience of this restaurant was adorable. There was an art piece made out of (~1000) recyclable chopsticks and that really drew us to the restaurant. The first hand roll was the Toro, hmm... I've never had Toro that was not red/pink. The Toro here was white and pretty much flavorless. We asked the person making our hand rolls what the fish was twice because the first time we couldn't hear under their mask, and the second time we were confused why the fish was white and lacked the infamous Toro taste. The other fish in the hand rolls continued to lack in quality, I thought the amount of rice-to-fish ratio was really off. I was stuffed after the fifth roll due to the amount of rice in each roll. Although the nori was crunchy and tasty, so long as you eat it quickly after it is served. Our favorite was the lobster truffle, because of a truffle sauce/essence. The seating arrangement is also quite awkward, we generally like to discuss about how each piece/roll tastes right after having a bite, but the seating position felt extremely close to the chef making our hand rolls, so we felt like there was no privacy. Overall, I give this place two stars, because because of the quality of the fish. Usually when I see a 4-1/2 star rated restaurant on yelp, I will always make the extra effort to try it, but unfortunately, I think this place was over-rated for the quality of the food in comparison to the ambiance/restaurant and fish we've had at other places with better value. read more

We came around 8 on a Saturday night and there was a 30 min wait because we were a party of 4. Everyone ordered a 6 piece set, but we were still hungry afterwards so we tried the unagi roll and bluefin tuna roll. High quality ingredients were used. Needless to say, every roll we ate was delicious. The rice was cooked well, and the chef makes each piece only after we've finished our current roll. It was an intimate setting. I ordered for pick up as in dining is closed. I usually avoid maki sushi because I find them plain and filled with too much rice so I didn't have much hopes for this place but it was the best maki! The environment is contemporary and charming with its cleverly designed wood blocking ceiling. The taste of their hand rolls are deliciously scrumptious especially with their high grade Nori! Hand rolls were fresh and cocktails were delicious, but everything ruined when they "automatically charge 16% gratuity". Yes the staffs are friendly. But nothing was exceptional. I always tip, but feeling forced to hand out gratuity makes me feel I have been robbed. The restaurant even has the audacity to state on the receipt "if you don't agree with the above gratuity, please speak to our front desk staff". Who will make it extra awkward to fight this?
